[Q]Screen will not sleep while charging - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a problem after trying out a magnetic charging USB Cable but my wife accidentally connecting it the wrong way :crying:
My phone turned instantly dead with red LED coming on. I put it on wall charger and was able to restart after 4 hours of charging.
After disconnecting the phone from charger the phone went into a bootloop showing Sony Logo and black screen. Forced shutdown and was able to power on phone.
Now this happens:
My phone keeps waking the screen when it is being charged (the screen timeouts and turns off before being turned back on again after a few seconds, showing the lock screen), even after i switch back to the standard USB charging cable (charging directly to the microusb port). I have checked developer options and keep screen awake when charging is not ticked so that's not the problem. Turning off screen using power button brings up lockscreen.
Additionally, my phone is not able to be switched off. When i switch off, it will enter into a sort of bootloop where the phone will spontaneously turn itself on showing 'Sony' screen > black screen and it repeats this cycle. The phone can however be turned back on during this bootloop if i press and hold the power button while the screen is black.
I have initiated a software repair with PC Companion and also tried flashing a FTF with flashtool both of which still don't fix above behaviour.
Any ideas on this???
Phone is still under warranty so no problem but wanted to hear your opinions first.

Fixed by bringing it in for repair under warranty.
Just don't mention that you connected charger the wrong way

Just curious... How did your wife connect the magnetic charger the wrong way? I didn't know there was a wrong way to connect it?

Oooo...there is.
One connector is "circle" and the other is "elipse" - that's the security Sony engineers build pn magnetic charger port but, obviously, that's not enough
Maybe if Sony ask Apple how to build "connect both way cable"

The cheap magnetic cables are poorly designed. Not Sony's fault.

Yea doesn't Sony's official magnetic charger work both ways?
Are you using the official magnetic charger or a third party?

The official charging dock is secured and you won't be able to plug in the cable upside-down.

****!! Sorry to hear that man.
Unfortunately no one can fix it except send
Phone to sony service repair.
Because my last phone z1 had actually same issue like yours. I sent it two times to repair center.final they send me replacement.

I bought one of this magnetic cable in Amazon but yesterday I put it in wrong way ... now I can't charge with usb, it's impossible to use phone connected to pc (all apps in use force closed after blinking) ... and I can't return to seller cause it's the only possibility to charge now grrrr
I flashed stock rom, same problem, repair center send me another phone.

This does not help - but as I read through this thread I'm very disappointed by the product design from Sony in this case. How can you develop a custom charging connector on a consumer device that damages the device if you plug it in in the wrong direction?
Sometimes I'm amazed about Sonys product design and sometimes I wonder how big and obvious mistakes they make.

Sad I have the exact same problem now... And my phone only has international warranty. Not local one.

[Q] Xperia X10 does not start but only the RED LED blinks on charging

Hi,
I have an Xperia X10 and it was working fine until last night. I had put it on charge overnight but when I woke up in the morning, I could see RED LED blinking and the phone will not boot up (re-start).
I have tried many suggestions found on the blog (taking out the batter, putting the phone on charge and then putting back the battery). This has not helped and my phone is till dead.
Any clue/suggestions on how to get this issue resolved?
Thanks!
Would try different charger / charger cable or charging from pc sounds like flat battery more than anything else
Kieron

Sounds like a flat battery.
Could be faulty battery/charger. Try different ones.
Sure, will try out your suggestions and use a new battery.
Does any one know what it means when the RED LED flashes for continuously three times when the phone is getting charged via the main (and not USB)?
The red flashing led pattern does not indicate more than something is not working accordingly so there's no way to tell from this exactly what has caused this.
I would try a different charger if possible and if this does not help, bring the phone to the store for a warranty repair. Hope it can be sorted easily and quick.

If you're from SE why are you on freakin XDA?
i found it was my charger that was the problem. i would leave it for ages and never recieve charge but if i shifted the cable or wiggled it a bit the charge would start
red flashing light means its on power but recieving enough charge to switch on i think. like when you try to turn your phone on when the batteery is completely flat
Or simply a dead, malfunctioning battery.
Had one of those battery, and it did that when charged..

Could be a broken USB port. It's a fairly common problem.
I just had the same problem with my X10. I left it charging overnight and now the phone won't turn on. All I get are 3 red lights blinking when I try to turn it on. I already tried a different charger and still no luck. Once when I plugged it into my PC I got it somehow to turn on, the deviced booted up but when it got into the initial screen it turned off
Wasn't the phone supposed to turn on even without the battery? I mean, can't I plug the charger and try to turn on my phone or it will only work with a battery?

x10i problem booting 3 red light flash

I have been getting the following error.
When phone boots up it will boot up and load everything up. After about 5 min or so my phone powers down and the charging light blinks 3 times.
I try to turn back on also blinks red light 3 times. Also when charger is connected does the same thing and battery is fully charged.
I have also tried flashing to stock K and stock Rom and still getting this error.
Can anyone help with this error on what to do or try to resolve this.
Thx

hi jayz tried that no joy still doing the same thing. Also had it in shop to for repair of charging port they fixed this. Will connect up by USB however light comes on to charge phone but phone then goes into a boot loop and red blinking light. They said it could be the regulator or something that is the case to it as they said it works fine connecting up lights up but then will restart...
USB connection to pc works. However no charging and as soon as in or set to charge on pc it will flash blinking red light

None of the following. Phone was working perfectly fine, After installing custom rom kernels was also working perfectly fine then phone started to reboot its self here and their so i reverted back to default everything and ever since its been doing the above regardless of what software used or kernal.
The phone a few times had fell off the side of computer table with charger in it and then that stopped working for the connection so i got that replesed and since then any type of charging will not work what so ever and i took back to the shop and they tested more and said it has nothing to do with the charging block because it is working taking current and also working perfectly fine with usb cable however the moment it is put to charge mode light turns on no charge dected and phone goes on a reboot loop and red light flash
Had the same problem... Hope it works with my to. Though I have the x10i... #redflash3 #sonyx10i

[Q] My ZU wont switch on. Red LED

This morning, my Z ultra died on me. It wont start, no vibration, no use pressing vol + power buttons and the red switch. I was neither rooted or bootloader unlocked.
When I tried to connect it to my laptop (Windows 7), its shows as a USB device. The red LED flashes up, the computer finds it and then lets go of it again. Again in a few minutes, the red LED goes up , the computer makes the connection sound and then the red LED goes off again. This cycle goes on and on.
I cannot use SEUS, Flash, Fastboot or do anything. I have checked various forums and apparently I have not hard bricked the phone as the LED still works and the computer recognizes the problem. But no one has given any concrete solution.
When I connect it to the charger which came with the phone, the red LED pops up and then goes off again. I dont know if its charging. HOWEVER, I have used another Chinese Travel Charger, and then the red LED stays solid as if its charging. I dont know what it means.
Please help. I spent a lot behind this phone. I dont want to be left with a brick
It's not an issue if it's completely stock is it? You have your warranty, but i understand that i sucks to have it shipped in for repairs for god knows how long. I had a similar issue some time ago, but i'm bootloader unlocked and what not, so that was pretty easy to fix. You're completely stock though, so it's a little harder to do anything.
What happens if you hold VOL UP when you connect it to your computer? Does a blue LED light up? If yes, does it stay on, or does it disappear? What happens if you hold VOL DOWN when you connect it to your computer? Do you get a blinking LED and then nothing? That's normal, and it's going into Flashmode. If you can get it to stay in Flashmode you'll be able to re-flash a ROM in Flashtool. But be 100% sure to have enough battery, or else you'll be in danger of hard bricking it.
So..
- Plug the wall charger in and charge it for a couple of hours (2-3 hours)
- Try to kick it into Fastboot (VOL UP when you connect it to your computer). Look for blue LED.
- Try to kick it into Flashmode (VOL DOWN when you connect it yo your computer). No LED.
Hi LordManhattan. I dont have any warranty as I brought it from a local reseller .
Whether I press Vol UP or vom DOWN when I connect to the laptop, a red LED pops up, there is a connection sound and after that the red LED goes off and and there is a disconnection sound.
If I leave the phone connected with the computer, the phone gets connected after 2/3 minutes, there is a connection sound and then there is a disconnection sound again . Any clue what I can do :crying::crying:

just a small note or two:
Flashmode the LED should go orange, then blue then off within about 1second then it is in Flashmode
To get into either of these modes the phone has to be powered fully OFF, press the red reset button before charging to make sure, then again just before the above steps.
It sort of sounds like a corrupted loader

Have a good read of this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1849170
It would suggest that the battery is flat. Let it charge in the wall plug for a few hours and see what happens
I have let the phone to charge overnight with the charger that came with the phone. As I said before, with that charger, the red LED would turn on and then go off again. I will hopefully try the Chinese travel charger tonight with which the red LED remains solid.
The funny thing is , the phone had about 80% charge when it died. This is so weird :'(

Have you tried the reset button under the microsd flap? Press and hold for 3 secs.
I did read another user had an issue where the screen blanked for around a day, he left it plugged in and came back to it about 6 hours later and it was fine again.

I tried that and basically all the other normal options. No use. The computer recognises it as a USB Input Device and for a second or two, the red LED comes up. Same thing when I am charging

+1 contact your local sony, i had a similar problem, no fastboot/flashmode. locked bl/not rooted and my led only flashed red and occasionally solid red then nothing. plugging it into computer continuously played the disconnecting sound.
most likely hardbricked.
i also purchased my xzu from a local BST but as long as you have your imei, contact sony and theyll tell you if you have warranty. they required me to send in proof of purchase as well but like most say "play stupid" ( i said i received it as a gift and they said it was fine)
i got a brand new XZU after a week and a half sending it in.

Thank you! One or two years ago my Z Ultra's screen cracked and I got a new phone. Decided to use it again, purchased a new screen and replaced it myself today. When I tried to move to AOSP (had root, bootloader unlocked, backup of TA partition), the phone bricked. No SONY logo, nothing. Did what you said above, Xperia Companion recognized the phone in flashmode and is now downloading the newest stock rom. I was so afraid of a hard brick, that living with latest stock without root doesn't seen so bad now hahaha
Hey Friends, I have exactly the same issue. The red led just flashes up for a couple of seconds and this cycle continues. My battery was a bit swollen up and the back glass cover opened up a bit. Still battery was working fine. Two days ago I tried nougat aosp on it and after leaving it idle for 2 hours, it was bricked. I can enter into flashmode and flashed stock LP as well as KK but it does not boots up. Is it definitely battery's problem? If yes, where can I buy original or near original battery for it?

The battery is dangerous and should be removed. Be careful because the battery can burst into flames if the bloated cell get punctured.
Use tools with caution and take your time.
Lipo cells expands as a first safety trigger. Instead of going strait to venting or venting and burst into flames.
Its a safety feature if they are charged with too high current or if the cell is drained below its 2,22 volts and is brought back to life with a normal charger that puts normal current on the cell. Then even 400mA in this scenario is way too much current to start charging a drained cell with.
But the battery should not be the issue that your phone is not booting. How did you flash stock rom? With Flashtool?

Xperia Z won't charge ... anyone else?

Have the Xperia Z tablet in stock ROM, unrooted, everything stock ... and a couple days ago out of the blue the tablet has stopped charging.
Even when I plug the USB cable in, the LED does not come up. Looking at Settings->Battery it shows a slim line under "Charging" only. Tried different chargers and different cables, same thing.
If I power off the tablet, and plug the charger in, now the LED lights up and the tablet charges.
As soon as I power on the tablet, the LED that was on goes off immediately. With the tablet turned on somehow it cannot detect the charger at all.
Tried rebooting the tablet a few times and didn't help.
Anyone had the same issue?
My next step is to use the Sony Companion software to repair it but not sure if it will wipe out my tablet ...

It's weird that it still charges when its off. I had a problem where it wasn't charging at all, and the motherboard got fried apparently, and Sony gave me a replacement.
I googled some, and people having similar problems as yours (on Sony as well as other androids) ultimately had to get their phone repaired/replaced unfortunately. For example - http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperi...Z-only-charging-when-switched-off/td-p/513665
I suggest you take a backup of all your data while this phone is still working!

My Z2 just died. HELP.

So I've been using my phone as per normal, and it suddenly switches itself off and wont turn on.
If I plug it in to charge (the batter was at 40%) I just get a blinking RED LED.
Any help / ideas guys?!

Hi Fenix
Have tried that with and without a charging lead connected and no joy. The red LED just continues to blink.
Have also tried, again with and without charge, to press the red button next the sim card slot and no luck.
How about volume down and power?

(you can use sony PC companion to do this)
(repair device)
I have this same problem.
I have reset and re installed the rom via pc companion and same problem.
Basically the phone will not charge via the magnetic connector at all.
if you switch off the phone it will not stay off, it keeps turning its self back on again and boot looping: displaying the sony logo, then off, then sony logo again.
If you hold the power button down for 20 seconds whilst on a Sony logo, the phone boots to the experia logo and boots normally.
Problem is the phone will NOT switch off and half the time it wont come back on. Its basically a lottery on whether the phone will come back at all.
Update - managed to get the phone switched on after leaving it on charge all night. Had to hold the power button down for 30 secs to get to my home screen as otherwise it was just looping to the Sony logo.
However, now, the phone is not charging - it detects that a charger is connected but the battery level is not going up and the LED is constant orange.
What to do?
I would flash a.2.69 firmware if you don't have it already.

I'm a newb with these things - is there link for how to flash?
Not sure if it makes a difference but this phone is from Vodafone and I believe they've locked the bootloader or something similar?
Also noticed that the phone 'thinks' its still charging even without a charger connected - and the orange LED is constant.
Looks like the battery is kabooshed?
I think u should give the phone in for warranty.

Adding to the above.
Received my Z2 on O2 onFriday 2nd, Tried charging it this morning and red charging light was on then started flashing.
That was trying to charge via a usb cable to the magnetic contact.
Re tried using standard usb cable.
Will not start regardless of what I do, on button, on + volume up, on + volume down.
Trip to O2 after work tonight to take it back.
May be a problem with the magnetic charging system, somehow shorting something out, for me anyway.
Same here, Need to return it to T-Mobile.
Same issue,
Went Off, never to be able to turn the phone on again.
When connected to the Charger, the red light blinks faster.
When connected to USB red blinking led, blinks slower.
Does not go 'On' anymore.
Recovery from pc compannion does not work.
The Update tool send by the sony technical suppport also did not recognise the device.
Windows does not recognise it.
Volume Up + power does not work
Volume Down + Power does not work
Volume Up of Down (phone turned off) connecting with USB does not work.
Red button next to the sim card does not reset the phone.
It is a Brick now, hope sony is good and replaces it with a NEW one.
I need help .. i was normally use my sony z2 d6503 and it turn off itself and i cant open it even if i put it charge only red led no logo no charging logo .. all black ..
