[Q] Little direction please. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Moms X2 finally died, and I picked her up a new s4 on ebay. I need to get her permanent root and wifi tether. She currently has 4.3 and it's trying to get me to accept an update. I'm working on 2 hours of sleep in the past 2 days, and I'm not sure where to begin. Should I keep it at 4.3 or take the update. I've been through the forums a bit, but I'm having a little trouble figuring out what the best/safest path is to take for her phone to accomplish what's needed. Any advice and or links would be much appreciated, so I don't have to spend the next two hours researching what the best option is. Sorry for being lazy tonight, I'm a bit overworked atm.

First off, never ever take an OTA update. You might possibly have an MDK bootloader and that's worth a lot around here. Go to "about phone" and give us some details about your phone. After that we can help you more.

Pretty sure if its already on 4.3 its not an MDK bootloader. In that case you may as well just accept the OTA and use towelroot to root it.
It is possible to upgrade to KitKat and still keep that 4.3 bootloader but it is an involved process for what is probably zero return.

It's mk2.
So update, towelroot, safestrap 3.72, install the zip to unlock toggles and tether?
I'm not going to put a rom on this phone. She is so lost on these things anyways, I wouldn't want to confuse her, so saving the bootloader for possible future exploit is pointless. As long as the phone works and she can tether to her laptop for netflix life is good.
Is towelroot as good as the previous root. I thought I read somewhere, that it's kind of hokey.

[Q] Help! Wanting to Root, but Software is updated!

So I have a Thunderbolt, got it the first day that it came out. Made the decision that I would stick with stock until I'd had enough of it.
Long story short, my boyfriend got the EVO 3D, and rooted it within the week. Naturally I got jealous.
So here's my dilemma, I found the [Updated: 3/26]Easyroot + S-Off [Version 1.6.3.11] root, but I forgot that I had updated my software.
I did a factory reset hoping that it would reverse the update, but apparently I lost all of my information for no reason, because [news flash] it didn't work!
I guess my question now is... What are my options?
Am I screwed and stuck with stock now?
Will there be a new root developed for {stupid-people-who-updated-their-software} like me?
Is there an updated root already out there that I can try?! <~ I've been looking with no sucess!
Please help me!!!!
{{{{&& for those of you who are experienced.. I have been searching the forums for 2 days and I found a post about EVO's, but not Thunderbolt. So I'm sorry if you have managed to see a post with this type of question before. I did try the [Updated: 3/26]Easyroot + S-Off [Version 1.6.3.11] root, but nothing happens. & I didn't know where else to look.}}}
I don't think there has been a new root method for the updated RUU.
So I do believe your out of luck for now.

Jcase's manual root method works on ever OTA out there. It's easy too. If you have any questions about it, just hit me up. I'd be happy to help.

Maybe but they will try anyway. Then you can't help them.

I already tried the easy AND 1 click root.. both didn't work, which is y I decided to ask for help on here.
I just wanted to know if there is a way to uninstall the manufacturer's update or if there is a Rom out that works for 1.7 something software... Not run around in circles on the same easy root that I already know won't work bc it says that version 1.2... And lower will work.

My wife is planning to get a T-Bolt pretty soon and without knowing what 'version' of s/w it will have when it arrives, you're saying 'no worries'. If she wants it rooted (our Eris' have been rooted since the exploit for it was available -- jcase was involved too !), I can use the manual (command-line) method in his sticky thread ?

Current rooting methods (manual preferred) will work fine for any stock officially released firmware because it's all still unpatched Froyo so the exploit used still works.
The only time in the future that this will stop working is when the Gingerbread OTA rolls out.
Reason I ask is I am positive I've read from others who've gotten T-Bolts and mistakenly allowed a s/w update, presumably OTA, and now they can't root.
Is GB being pushed to a small # of phones, by chance ?

Nope. User error on their part. They probably tried one of the auto-root scripts and then blamed it failing on the OTA.

I completely agree. Many of the rooting scripts out there are either out of date or use obsolete exploits. The OTA back in April, I think it was, required new exploits be used. Jcase has been on that like white on rice and I'm going to say this community stands strongly behind jcase and the method he's outlined. It has the best success rate, without question. Plus, everyone always says its much easier than it looks. If setting up the SDK or ADB is confusing, we are always glad to help too.

and this is true!!! because last night my new friend loonatik helped me step by step root my phone! and now i LOVE my gingeritis!
my phone was updated [by me when the update first came out] to version 1.70.something.. and i was still able to do a root. it was manual, but considering i had no idea what i was doing.... once i got going with it the task seemed less daunting.

Okay, my wife got the Thunderbolt yesterday and within minutes of activating it, it prompted us for a s/w update, in the 73.xx mb range in size. I don't know what s/w version it's currently on and I kept rejecting the update. I need to remind her to do the same -- hopefully it's not too late. Or, is there no harm in taking the update ?

There's no harm in updating, but there's no point if you plan on rooting it. Part of the rooting method will wipe everything and reset it to an earlier software version. You'll then have to update(Using ROMs from here, not the OTA) to a newer version to catch up to the latest release or whatever ROM you choose to run. You're better off rooting now, then worrying about updates.

Froyo update on guam

Hey there community. I live in Guam. I have a verizon fascinate still running on eclair. I want to upgrade to froyo, but since we don't have verizon on Guam, I cant get the OTA update. So I'm just looking for the simplest, easiest way to upgrade phone without having to root it. Help me out!!
You're going to have to root it if you want the latest upgrades (ICS, JB, etc). I don't know if Odining the 2.3 stock rom will work for you since it's for Verizon... why don't you want to root? Also, you may have to have someone help you to make certain roms work for different carriers
Well the thing is I'm trying to avoid rooting altogether. I just wanted move up from eclair to froyo. So I can use the play store instead of the android market. trying to make it as simple as possible but nothing that simple on guam.

You might not have to root it if you can find a stock rom for your specific carrier that you can push through Odin but you're probably better off just rooting and going on a GB or JB rom that's been tweaked for your carrier
So okay i've succumbed to the peer pressure. I WILL ROOT! now to read forum pages and guides for the next 4 hours followed by an hour or 2 of nerve wracking "did i do this right" phone fondling. woo!

After I fully charged the battery, I rooted..... well technically I came here, read about what version of the S4 I had... got disappointed/sad that I couldn't unlock it (coming from a GNex) but I read and educated myself on how to root, and upgrade and keep root.. Then I used Xposed framework to modify the hell out of it... and while it sucks that I can't flash any ROMs.. most the features that I cared about when I flashed ROMs on the GNex, can/is modifiable using various modules on Xposed.
TLDR - Immediately.

Yes. I used my upgrade discount to buy my S4 off Amazon. It shipped with MI1. I used Root De La Vega to root, and then used this guide to update from MI1 to MJ7 and kept root.
The Xposed module I use the most is 'Wanam' (2.2.2) however I also use 'Bootmanager' to control what boots, 'Maximize Widgets' to have DashClock be my lockscreen, 'Xposed Recent Tasks RAM' because I like looking at memory usage (and bars) and 'Xuimod' to enable the BatteryBar Mod... once again back to my love of bars.

Yeah it's the baseband. For what I know (anyone, please correct me) there is no going backwards on basebands. If your S4 is already on MJ7, you can't go back to MI1. However, if I was in the situation you're describing, I would probably use this thread to root and then install Xposed and go to town.
That being said, I don't know if that guide is working.. I know there was controversy over the root method on MJ7 since (once again from my knowledge) the method had you installing a SuperSu app that was Chinese based and was "calling" home. XDA closed a lot of threads discussing that root process and since I didn't need to know about it, I honestly haven't read what was going on with that so... this is where my help will probably end.
WHATEVER you do.. just be sure to read all instructions of any thread, try to understand to the best of your ability what you're doing, or at least the concept of what you're doing, and as every thread says... your phone warranty will be so gone and dead it will become next years Halloween mascot, so use all info you gain with the idea that you can destroy your phone's software (I've never had it happen but gotta say it.)

What is the latest on KitKat for MK2?

Hello, mine is running MK2 firmware, I545. With the helps from this forum, I rooted it and installed safestrap two months ago. My understanding back then was that CWM can't be installed to MK2. Has this been changed? Is there any way we can put KitKat to the phones like mine?

actually were temp set on that aspect we'll be able to run safestrap with 4.4 just like the AT&T and Note3 users I've got all the file templates ready even in a minute or less i'll build these "magic" upgrade / downgrade SS methods . I've got everything ready just need a leak or official firmware and modem. so as soon as someone comes privy to it please PM me. I'm sure hash will be putting his own update out very soon but we wont be waiting because there will be a workaround. all the waiting tho... this is why If i didnt have unlimited grandfathered in (17TB tethered last month eat it vzw it was proven in court tethering is legal and were able to do what we want with our phones you can't stop us.) or I wouldnt ever b willingly giving my money to a company that deliberately delays and with holds updates from customers so they can lock their crap up more... when they know and we know no matter what they throw on it we will prevail. just stupid we'll be getting 4.42 as 5.0 comes out for the rest of the world lol also why Tmobile is taking over verizon's losing a large percentage of its customers to them next year or so. I was loading 4.4 on tmobile phones in jan its now april and were still waiting. we should start a bounty for a hacker to be pulling test firmware or leaks from vzw for us

It's expected. Verizon is the Apple of android now. Locking and blocking so they can find ways to make even more $ from subscribers. Its shameful, but it's business. They have maybe the best service and until people start dropping them they can pretty much do what they want.
Just hang in there and hope that someone finds a way to downgrade so you can get root and twrp back. I believe @autoprime is looking into it in another thread. That's a good thing. :good: Be mad at Verizon still, but be patient too.

He means v10b and v10c, of course, and many people are reporting the same issue. It may still be possible to revert to v10b from the OTA'd v10c, which would solve our problems with this OTA, but anyone who has not flashed v10c OTA yet should avoid it best as possible until there is better clear information about reverting.
Remember when Google first updated the Chromecast firmware and that patched the only known exploit for it ? It took a while to get around that. I think the Chromcast Devs eventually did, though...I quit following and just stayed stock.
How about instead of being furious with Verizon, you point the blame at yourself. You're the one who was stupid enough to take an OTA, despite common knowledge being that OTAs will patch exploits and have been known to prevent rolling back to older versions.
Not to pile on, but I am really surprised by the number of folks that have eagerly taken the OTA. As with just about any SW update, it's usually best to let someone else be the guinea pig. Not to say I'm not sympathetic. Still, at least your not on a Samsung. I spent the last year on my GS3 stuck in the past usually running TW 4.1.2, but at least I was free!
I had an issue, took the ota, and couldnt fix through TWRP. Flashed back to 10B stock, then took the ota, and now Stump wont work. I would imagine that if you used to .tot, and LG fladh tool, and go back to 10B, that all will be right with the world again.... At least, thats how Samsungs are, now that Stump wont work with 11C. I took it simply for the improvements, already had a camera shortcut on the lock screen

You cannot go revert back with a Samsung anymore. With release of knox on the S4 the first update after the MDK bootloader locked anyone out of reverting back. I'm fairly sure every Samsung bootloader after that on other devices worked the same way.

It looks like you cannot revert to v10b via .tot, either. Still might be a way, but things seem rather bleak about that.
What is bad for us all is that developers, already annoyed at Verizon and LG both, for good reasons, are likely see there very few Verizon LG G3 users that are ever going to be able to benefit from their work left. So, they will give hacking the Verizon G3 up as not worthwhile, maybe, and we will be stuck with a stock-only device. Its a problem to consider.
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
GS3 got Knox at 4.4 and couldn't be rolled back as I recall (might even have been when 4.3 released). As bad as that was for the unfortunate folks that took the OTA or had to do a warranty exchange, the worst part was that it fractured the development into two camps, and that seemed to expedite the winding down of dev support for that device. I really hope that isn't what happens to the G3.
FYI- I just saw this post from @autoprime basically suggesting evidence of anti-rollback code in the new BL. Not a shocker, as VZW has been employing that for a while now - at least on Moto and Samsung devices. Sigh...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56437577
Yep... First they locked down the S4...and a short time later the S3 got the Knox bootloader essentially locking everyone who updated into using TW. Safestrap helped many but AOSP was no longer an option for them. It really sucked for development on my S4 as you need to know if a room was for mdk or for Safestrap.
I'd hate to see that happen here to the G3...BUT i will not give up a custom recovery just to get the latest update.... Even if the development community never is able to get a working updated rom.

I was pretty tempted to take the update. But coming from experience with Motorola, I knew better. I checked the forums first before taking it.
Not to lecture, but any time you root it's best to use the free app Uninstall Expert and freeze any potential updates. It saves a lot of heartache.
Surely this will get patched it's just going to take some time...
I hope this doesn't sound evil but I am kinda hoping this root debacle increases the value of my g3. I've been wanting to sell it but am waiting for root confirmation on the Droid turbo...

I was pretty pumped about the droid Turbo too, but the initial feedback in the forums is that it has some issues. No simultaneous voice and data either. Just makes me feel that much better about the G3!

I'm using a droid turbo right now because I broke my g3 screen. Can't stand this p.o.s. Excited for my g3 replacement device. I'll have it 2m and I'll be back to normal.
BTW, screen and digitizer are one in the same on the g3. Crack your screen and touchscreen no longer works. Just FYI
Verizon Moto Droid Turbo... No simultaneous voice and data? What year is it again?
