Otg with my micro sd card - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Would this work? otg cable connected to my nexus 9, at the other end of otg, a mico memory card reader that will host my 64gb class 10 msd card. Would this act like a pen drive? If so how usable would this be?. Could I store and flash roms from it? Or is that in fact why multi rom has been developed? Would I be able store apk's and also install to my internal drive?
Thanks very much !

Actually Im not so sure. Nexus devices do not support OTG unless rooted. Either that or you need to download a specific file manager app that will be able to read your OTG device.

Thats fine I'll be rooted on day one!
A specific file manager would be fine!
But do you think that setup would work?

Found a paid app
Nexus USB otg for manager!
Wicked!!
There is also a trial version [emoji12]

No root neccesary.
You can download the app "Nexus Media Importer" from the Playstore. It 's free.

Thanks for the info, I might just get this tab now. OTG cable, £2.50 + 64GB USB stick, £14= match made in heaven. Much cheaper than going for the 32GB option :good:

Don't know about the keyboard. I always use bluetooth to connect with my keyboard.

So wait, I'm also very curious about this. I have a 2 TB external HD that I would love to use with this device, were I to get it. USB OTG is something that could make or break my decision to get it.
So what are the odds that the Nexus 9 will be compatible with USB OTG? I'm very willing to root my device if that's what it takes.
Once using USB OTG, how will it work? Specifically for saving documents on my device. I'm probably going to use it for work stuff as well as for media, so I'll want to be able to plug in my HD, open a word doc or excel file in Kingsoft office or another similar program, edit it, and save it back onto the HD. I wouldn't want to have to use a file explorer to move docs back and forth every time.
Is this an option?
Sorry for all the questions, never used USB OTG before, but it's literally one of the biggest factors in whether or not to get this device.

Well first off if the n9 supports otg out of the box
The problem is that it wont support ntfs
which are hard drives
you will need an custom kernel with ntfs support
That being said
If it mounts you should not have any problems using it
watching movies writing to the hard drive etc...
just go where its mounted to and enjoy
You will need a file explorer
I recommend this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rhmsoft.fm.hd

How can I get NTFS support?

USB OTG Cables

I just ordered my USB OTG Cable today. For those that don't know what it means, it stands for USB On-The-Go. Basically, it allows you to read files from a portable flash drive straight from your phone. This will only work with a compatable kernel and since we have an ICS Source the developers said it was already enabled within the kernel.
This will be my first time to have ever used one and I was just wondering the pros and cons of having something like this.
I need some feed back~~
well from my POV these are my pros and cons...
PROS:
Extra space (whatever you can get that hooks up to usb, 2tb!!)
CONS:
Lugging around the extra crap
You have a good con list ziggy46..lol
I was concerned about that as well. But I have a 500gb portable external hard drive and it has tons of crap that I can probably watch or listen to on my phone. I can't shove everything on my 32gb sdcard. My 1T sits on my desk for my wife's photography thing she does.
My friend has an OTG cable and he uses his usb mouse to control his phone.
It's pretty cool but really gimmicky.
Hmmm...interesting. Thanks for the tip
if your otg cable works out good for you let us know. i might buy one and get a 2tb usb hdd.
btw, if things are fomatted in NTFS you might need to make a script for them to mount to the phone...
HTC doesn't support USB OTG in general. It will require a kernel hack. It didn't work in GB. I am not sure about ICS.
From what kozmick mentioned in his kernel thread it was enabled in the kernel. Im hoping it works if not then I hope it works on the N7 or my wife's SGS2.

Normally USB otg won't work on an HTC device. According to faux its something about the USB stack.
Ok. So I FINALLY got my USB-OTG Cable and even with the enabeled kernel it does not work. Kinda bummed but the part was cheap so its not a major loss. It works on ky wife's SGS2 and I read that it will work on the Idolian tablet I just ordered so I'm cool with that. I'll try and sell the other 3 that I won't need.

Just wondering, for the usb otg on the sgs2, did you need to connect the ext hd with power source? Or is the sgs2 able to power the ext hd?
It was able to power it just fine. I was just using a 2GB flash drive to test and you can see the led light come on. Not sure how well it could keep the charge up tho.

[Q] HTC One-use as as USB drive?

Hey guys,
I did a search but didn't find a relevant thread to the One m7. The lack of SD card slot is a little concerning to me. As long as I can plug it in to my PC and it sees it as a "removable thumb drive" of sorts, I'll be fine without the SD card. Can anyone confirm this functionality? Or is it locked to crap like an iPhone?
Trying to decide between the One and S4. Not an easy decision by any means. I really like the One but I must be able to load custom ROMS and root/unlock bootloader.
Thanks

Almost all if not all Android phones will show up as a drive when you plug them into a computer. The HTC One is no exception. It shows up. It also has USB OTG support so if you get a proper cable you can plug flash drives into it.
Awesome, thanks. I've had my EVO 3D since it came out, and it's been a pretty good phone but I'm due for an upgrade!
So, does the One show an "internal" SD card of sorts, is it a different partition? Just wondering if the process will be the same when booting into recovery to flash ZIPs and what not.
I don't understand how people can cram more than 25GB onto a phone. -_-
Well, I like to be able to use my phone as a removable thumb drive, and I also have Bluetooth in my Jeep and love streaming music from my phone that way. It works great. I have a sizable music collection and also like to keep software installs and other things handy (I work in IT) So the 64GB model is looking pretty good right now if I can still do all these things the same way I did before.

It mounts as a single drive. In windows, it shows up as a Portable Device, HTC One, and it is just a drive. There is a separate partition for the HTC Sync Manager.
The first time I plugged it in, it needed to install the USB drivers. After installed, I had to reconnect it, and it mounted the drive.
Additionally, I did not have to change the USB settings, toggling between USB Drive, or charge, or sync. It just shows up. Somewhat different than what I'm used to on my Inspire, but works much smarter now.

We have very similar goals ... :highfive::highfive:
but want to have an un-secure partition for USB flash drive. I use this as a tablet so I need to have usb flash drive access.
Is there an app for that yet? Aside from doing all the grunt work of shelling into the root / moving directories by hand?
There must be a better way.

[Q] otg cable not recognizing harddrive

But as soon as i connect an harddrive or a usbstick it won't reconize it it see's it but it says that it's empty or it can't read it.
Are there some setting i need to change? i couldn't find them!
I was thinking the cable was okay because it works fine with my mouse ..?

Is your phone providing enough power? I don't know why you'd be able to see them if it wasn't, but it's a common issue with OTG. Is the hard drive also plugged into the wall?

USB OTG on Kindle Fire HDX

Hi, anyone know how to make USB OTG work on stock ROM ? Thanks
anyone know ?
I don't know if it's possible even if rooted. If you want to connect a flash drive, have you considered a wireless reader? The Kingston MobileLite works great with both my HD8.9 and HDX7. The RavPower reader sounds good too...
CC
This is also useful if you need additional storage: http://www.sandisk.com/products/wireless/flash-drive/
Oh, and I think Amazon disabled USB OTG in the kernel, for whatever reason.
I just got a Kindle hdx 7 and very disappointed that no usb host ability. Is possibly anyone working on a kernel that will support it? I am rooted.
Very interested to know if any progress has been made. Anyone? Is it possible to create some sort of work-around?
You guys are looking for something that is a long way out at best. Device is going to need a custom kernel to have any hope of usb OTG. The problem with that is, nobody is going to even look at custom kernels till maybe when we can adb in fastboot or the bootloader gets unlocked.
I use a backup battery / wireless router / wifi SD reader / travel router device for extra storage. Turn it on, browse to it from ES Explorer. Voila, just move the files over.
There's also WiFi Explorer Pro, if you want to do it to a PC.

usb sd otg adapter

I think any generic one will work. I was interested in them as well and I found this youtube video reviewing one:

I think as long as the phone supports USB OTG they'll all work fine.
You mentioned modding and I assume that means flashing in recovery? I'm not sure if recovery will be able to pick up the USB OTG Card reader though.
