Ok, I just ordered a 32GB USB Flash Drive.
Some people report that the Athena recognizes some flash drives so I was thinking...why not remove the MD and take apart the 32GB flash drive and put it inside the Athena. Then solder the USB pins together internally so the USB drive is always connected internally to the device?
I haven't really put serious thought into this but wanted to run it past everyone and those hardware experts to see what every ways.
I have yet to look up the MD power requirements and compare those to the USB power requirements. Either way, if it's recognized it could mean a real upgrade to the device and we could always write a simple program to enable/disable the USB drive if power consumption is too great.
Your thoughts people on this?
EDIT
After further thinking I see four obvious obstacles:
- Stripping down the 32GB USB drive so it fits in the device in place of the MD. I'm hoping this isn't that big of an issue but then again I have no idea what i'm talking about. LOL
- 1 have to make sure the Athena recognizes the 32GB USB drive.
- Power Consumption as mentioned above, which might be overcome by utilizing a utility of some sort.
- Since the Athena requires the USB Host cable/adapter to make things like this work, there might need to be some type of mod internally to make this happen. I talking to someone with more knowledge of USB pin outs might help in this area.
-- EDIT: Olipro mentioned that this is most likely a non-issue. That the USB adapter just makes the USB connection a large one so the internal wiring I'm thinking about shouldn't be a problem. This is great news. One obstacle out of the way. Don't you love progress!

hehe u know im always behind ur crazy ideas. lets get this to work!
possible incompatibilities of it not detecting the microdrive but should be able to be fixed by software
possibly will need to integrate usb host controller chip and wires inside as well
make sure not to screw up the charger either =p
but other than that it sounds good
Hi, for information: Athena Servicemanual says you need 3 things to replace if you disassemble your device (On-Off Key, CommManager Key and some rubbers).
So if you really get the USB-Flash running then you'll get problems putting everything together again.
I think you'll get errors because the G-Sensor doesn't detect any Microdrive. (maybe freeze or reset or some other issues?). Maybe you have to shorten the G-Sensor somehow. This will need people who own the original plan of the device and also know how to get information out of it.
But great idea!
Ok, just found out that the host adapter just changes the plug to a larger USB plug. So the wiring should be a piece of cake. Let's keep this going...before you know it the team won't have only brought you a great ROM but also provide a way to have a 32GB Athena and storage you no longer have to worry about and with no moving parts!!!

Thanks for your feedback. I also think this may work and if not with the drive I've ordered with some other USB. I've seen USB devices as small is a dime so this should work. I'll be happy to purchase a bunch of USB drives to see which work. I probably would like anyone with an Athena and a USB drive to test what they have and post the results.
For the record I ordered a Corsair Survivor 32GB USB Flash Drive model CMFUSBSRVR-32GB.
I think there was a group of people(I couldn't remember who exactly) who already dismantled their athena when it came out to see which micro drives in the market is compatible with the one installed in the athena. I suggest we find the post first before and read through their findings. There might be something there that may help with this project.
If I remember it correctly, there was even a host of pictures and instructions in dismantling the Athena.
I just couldn't remember other details because I was just browsing around and never thought of owning an athena.

Something I found about USB Drives and the Athena
Wikipedia claims microdrives use more power then flash drives:
"consume more power than flash memory (on the order of 190mA, peak 310mA, at 3.3V) "
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microdrive
Good luck to you this would be cool.

Let`s keep this a short term, realistic and affordable goal. ;-p
USB storage is cheap, easily modified, compatible as it`s already recognized by the device both by the software and USB host capabilities of the device board, etc. Also, those drives aren`t yet available and I doubt people will want to spend over $800usd on them for Athena. No?
Well, IMHO there's two alternatives for such a modification:
1 - either use the ATA connection of the micro-drive with the 32 GB pendrive. Adapters exist, wiring should be tricky due to the size requirements (everything has to fit into the space usually used by the micro-drive);
2 - connect permanently the 32 GB USB pen-drive to the USB port. Removal of the micro-drive is in that case optional, maybe in order to make room.
The problem with the second option is that I am pretty sure this will screw-up USB slave connections, and more specifically ActiveSync. Altough, true, one can Sync through Bluetooth.
Two problems with the first alternative:
- G-Sensor, without a md, will no work anymore. BUT it can be disabled in a software manner, so that's no big issue aside from the fact that we won't be able to "tilt'n scroll";
- finding a compatible USB / ATA adapter (those are known to be... "capricious").
I find the first alternative much sexier, personnally... And it DOES get me thinking.
Why not just use one of theose new 16 or 32GB MicroSD/Transflash, or whatever the hell there called cards, just released at CES.. It would save ya
lots of work, and you wouldn't have to crack the Advantage open.
Yep, that's also being discussed on the forum.
But I do agree that having solid-state 32 GB instead of mechanical 8 GB in my Athena would suit me just fine.
Jointly with a 32 GB SDHC card, of course.
:-D lol
I currently have the 8GB SDHC....of course I'm going to buy the 16 and then the 32 as soon as they come out and I can get my hands on it...but my goal here is to replace the MD. After thinking it through even further, we could even setup an internal type of mechanism so as USB drives become larger and cheaper, we could just pop out the old and pop in the new thus continuing to increase the internal storage of our devices.
Maybe I'm just dreaming but replacing the MD seems to be a goal that we can achieve quickly and cost effectively. We've had the discussion of getting larger MD's...but always ran into obstacles we probably couldn't overcome. They are releasing large SSD's but we may have to mod the internal connection, etc. With the USB idea, the connection exists, compatibility is there, and it's very feasible. I'm just excited. LOL

I'm thinking more simplistic. Take out the MD and dock it connect to. This frees up some space. Strip down USB drive as much as possible and hope that it fits some way into the device. If it fits, we can mount it in there in a number of ways. Solder 4 wires from USB drive to USB host interface on the board. Write some software to control (activate/deactivate aka mount/dismount) the USB drive and see how it goes.
2 - connect permanently the 32 GB USB pen-drive to the USB port. Removal of the micro-drive is in that case optional, maybe in order to make room.

Not sure what you mean exactly but...I want the USB drive to be internal. Of course I could get some velcro and stick a 32GB USB drive to the back of my Athena, etc...but that would just be ugly.
You also need the USB host cable to do this unless you want to solder wires and run them from the outside of the device to the inside USB host pins. Let me know if I got the wrong picture here.

You bring up a very good point. I'm going to have to take my 4-in-1 cable and try to run a small USB drive while trying to ActiveSync. I wonder if that will still work. If it fails, the mod I'm proposing may cause a problem with ActiveSync connections. Anyone else have comments and/or ideas on this?

I'm hoping we can do it without any adapters. Just straight soldering of the 4 USB wires needed to communicate. Should suffice. I found that I don't really use nor need the G-Sensor on the MD. For sure can be disabled in the ROM. The Athena Project team would just have to make a Special Edition ROM for those that do the mod.

I actually read that thread a little while ago. Do you know when it will be released and how fast they will get up to larger drives like 8, 16, 32, etc. GB's?
ia ctually dont think you will run into active sync problems...
reason being i remember a special cable that came with my friends hermes that split the usb port into two
one for charging and one for syncing...
so i think if we disable the flash drive when syncing it should be fine
I did a search and found that no one has posted this problem on this forum - I'm the only one ??
My prime use to hooked up with my PC with no problems. At some point recently (I'm thinking the recent ICS update) my PC & Prime had a parting of ways. Now I plug in the Prime and get 'USB device not recognized'.
Downloaded and ran Asus Sync hoping that a driver vanished but no luck.
I'm running Windows 7 (64 bit). Has anyone else noticed the same problem and if so - how did you fix it ?
Thanks
I have three computers, and none of them even recognize my prime anymore, not even in Device Manager. This started after I got it back from RMA.
I, myself, am not particularly concerned about it, since I'm just waiting for the Infinity to come out; the Prime I will just pass on to a family member. If the Infinity was going to be released in the far flung future, I'd send it back.

hey everyone, and I'm so happy to see this thread, but have you guys had similar issues to Mines?
Hello Everyone, I'll try to short and to the point. I've been searching xda/google/androidcentral on and off since maybe early Februrary and still nothing, maybe someone has some awesome insight.
So my computer won't detect my TP anymore for file transfer. It did maybe the first month or so though.
Here's what I've tried so far, with no luck.
- Different Computers - Different Cables - New Asus Brand OEM USB Cable - Aftermarket USB Cable - Different USB Ports (Front and Back of Computer) - USB Debugging Mode - Uninstalled Drivers on my PC to try and get table to re-install it. - Factory Reset (multiple times with and without auto-backup) - Connecting From KeyboardDock to Computer
I convinced my cousin to buy a TP and Dock the other week so I also got to try some extra stuff.
- I plugged His TP with His USB cable to His PC and it connected fine.
- I plugged His TP with His USB cable to MY PC and it connected fine.
- I plugged MY TP with His USB cable to His PC and it wouldn't detect.
- I plugged MY TP with His USB cable to MY PC and it wouldn't detect.
I also tried his TP with my USB cables (both oem and aftermarket) on my PC and it connected fine.
Here's Some additional Info, that may be helpful.
I was previously able to connect to my HDMI ports on my TV via micro HDMI, but that does not work anymore either.
I've seen a few people mention serial numbers, so here's some Info, not sure if it's the correct info.
My TP - TF201-B1-CG - S/N starts with a "B" His TP - TF201-B1-GR - S/N starts with a "C"
I thank you all for your time and any insight is much appreciated.
Called ASUS support - I'm the first that they have ever heard that problem. They suggested a factory reset but first I must back the data up. Never done a factory reset, I hope Voodoo will keep the root.
When I finally try it - I'll let you know what happens.
Cool thanks NewbieKeepItSimple, I hope we get this sorted ou!
Hey everyone, I have some more interesting info regarding the USB issue. I didn't want to suspect this as a problem, but yea it looks like it may be an actual bad port on the TFP itself.
My reasoning is that I got my free GPS dongle in the mail today and it won't work. Anyone else test this yet?
Another Question, as far as RMAs go, do we HAVE to call in? Anyone know for sure? I know there's forums, but trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

But you guys are charging fine? Just not connecting to the PC's? Have you had a good look at the connectors both on the cable and the Prime, nothing obvious? You all have uninstalled and re-installed the drivers right? Or maybe tried the universal naked driver utility?

Yep, charges fine. I couldn't see anything obviously wrong with cables and connectors.
As far as trying universal naked driver, I'm pretty sure drivers aren't the issue since I tried a whole different TFP with the same computers and cables (stated above) and it connected and installed the drivers correctly.

My Prime was sync'd at work with my contacts and I put movies on from my home PC. Now neither PC can communicate with the Prime.
There is somethings with the Prime and USB ports that seem a little goofy. I have a USB memory on my keychain that I use for my work files. One of the things I wanted to do with the Prime is access and work on my files during business trips. The work USB memory is 4GB Fat 32 but the Prime can't see it even though all other computers can see it. Plug in an older 2GB memory - the Prime can see it. Plug in my Apple iPhone - the Prime can see it. Plug in some other USB memories no problem but my work USB is invisible.
I really can't see any reason for the Prime to suddenly become invisible to computers but I will try the factory reset once I get my memory 64GB SDcard next week.

that's so frustrating. factors reset didn't work for me but I'm wishing luck to you.
Ok.. something to try before going directly to wiping your Prime...
First, try plugging it into a different USB port. This will cause the PC to try and load a new driver.
If that fails, click Start, right click on Computer and select Manage. Look for an entry called "Portable Devices" and under that "Transformer Prime TF201".
If you don't have that at all, then the system has failed to identify the device entirely.. try it with another PC (take it to a Best Buy and plug it in.. ). If it fails there, then something has changed in your Prime. If you've flashed the ROM, it's possible that's the problem.
If you DO see the entry, but the PC isn't recognising it - right click on the entry for the Prime and select 'Uninstall'. On the dialogue box that pops up, check "Delete the driver software for this device" and let it do its thing.
Unplug the Prime, then plug it back in. It should download a new driver for the Prime. Hopefully this will fix the problem.
I've never heard of an Android device's ADB USB port failing - it's entirely possible of course - but we have five here.. which is pretty amazing.

I'm not holding out much hope either but who knows. The ASUS is rooted but I haven't flashed anything. Another tack I tried is using the just the tablet then keyboard connection but both give the same results.
If I'm connecting to two different spots that on the Prime (dock/Tablet) and there are two different interfacing chip sets involved. Maybe it is a software bug that is screwing up how the Prime addresses the USB (protocol).

Am I correct that from what I have read...you can NOT plug your s3 into the usb of a car stereo and have it play and show song names etc? So unless they "fix" the usb mount issue the only options is aux or bluetooth? All the talk of the awesome sound these things are on paper anyways capable of and the purist connection to a car stereo is not available? Like many Im waiting for my US version to arrive in a couple of weeks and just trying to get a grip on what to expect and not expect is all.
Correct. You can't connect the S3 to a car stereo like a USB stick at the moment.
...unless your car stereo supports the MTP protocol
They have to be working to fix this right? I certainly hope they are....kind of hard to believe they made a change like this really.
+1
I guess since Im switching from a iPhone I have just gotten use to being able to use the phone with just about anything I try to attach it to. I do not regret jumping to Android with this upcoming phone, Im done with apple, but I think its been long enough these guys need to get the ball rolling on more streamlined connectivity on a semi universal scale like the iphone has. I really dont want to have to keep the iphone around just so I can listen to my tunes in the car.
This irritates the faeces out of me.
Android File Manager on Mac is flakey with it. And now, I'm in work on my XP machine and I can't get files off of it.
Grrrr. Why the hell have they stopped USB Debugging from being able to mount as normal?! Or just have the "Mount on Next Connect" option like on the S2's ICS rollout (Which was annoying too, but at least it worked).
I just don't get why Google are doing stuff like this and stopping you install on external memory. Is Google starting to become like Apple where they just bend over to networks and developers so they can make as much money as possible while the customer suffers? If this is how they going I'm really not liking it.

I get the reason they dropped it for phones with only internal storage, but why doesn't the SGS3 support it with its external SD-CARD?
Has Samsung made any statements about this? Because all I know is not being able to connect to my car, tv, other computers etc. and not being able to transfer Apps to external memory is completely ruining this phone for me and can't use it the way I usually use Androids, I mean now I always have to carry around a flash drive and a OTG cable and transfer from phone to flash drive then flash drive to other device, and I really don't give a crap about their technical explanation because i'd rather have a rougher Android experience with all the features than what they doing here, and I shouldn't be having to Root my phone just to get stuff that should already be there.
I'm so mad! I just got a new deck today and it doesn't recognize my SGS3 via USB! :crying::crying::crying:

Are there any kernels that support USB Audio? When I connect my USB DAC (Audioquest Dragonfly) to the phone it recognizes as a USB drive, when I start USB Audio Player Pro is recognize the DAC but the playback don't start.

Doesn't work, never will. Nothing on the firmware side will ever make it so with this device (or at least nothing that any dev has been prepared to do, put it that way), pretty much limited by hardware.

Thank you, that's a shame. Sony Xperia S can do that. Maybe I'll go with S3 for that feature.
Yep it is a shame, it was something I was always really keen to have if it was possible when I used my S2 for 2 yrs, but alas it wasn't to be.
Been looking at the Facebook Portal, it's got a USB-C port on the back but according to Facebook's support it's only used "in the factory", so I'm assuming maybe that's something they might use with a flashing tool to reset damaged units. Has anyone messed around with one/found out anything about how it might work? I've noticed that, at least with mine, if I hold down power and the volume up button while it's booting, the screen remains black but the mic light is still on. Thinking this may be some kind of recovery mode perhaps.

From what I’ve been able to gather, it’s running on some form of AOSP with a custom Portal skin- haven’t been able to get much more info than that though as the info on the device past what FB has put out publicly is pretty slim. Definitely doesn’t surprise me that it’s an android device though considering that’s just about all FB seems to develop for outside of the web (Oculus Go, Facebook Home, etc.)
Would be really interesting to try using Discord on this device though, and possibly finding a way to disable FB functions. Might make it a good gift then, if not it’s making it really hard to hold onto it.
Edit: This is my source for AOSP, assuming it’s the “Android Open Source Framework” mentioned:
https://techcrunch.com/2018/10/08/facebook-portal/amp/
I got my hands on one (free gift from company) but I'm trying to figure out what to do with it too.
Hello everyone, sorry I am late to the party. It is definitely android. If you run the chromium browser and attempt to open something like a pdf file, chromium will give you an error and ask for download permissions. This error message also gives you a link to the applications settings page from where you get access to some of the settings. No permissions sadly. You can however go in to the battery optimization settings and filter for all apps and get a full list of everything installed. As can be seen in these images on imgur /a/QWqs0pP

We're stoked. We've been using the 15 inch Portal in our conference room. Hooked up a usb-c to HDMI adapter, ran it to our conference room 4K television and bam! Absolutely gorgeous.
Works flawlessly as an output, and even audio (as would be expected) is now running through the monitor.
Oh niiiice ! I actually asked facebook portal customer support, and they said nothin could be done with the usb c port ! It really is a shame cuz some people probably want to output to a bigger screen !
I want to try if usb c headphones and microphones will work. I don't have any around though !
I've tested and seen that I can use the port as a usb c PD charger, it charges my macbook pro and oneplus 6
Maybe we can figure out a way to use ADB to get us into the portal ?

Oh wait, never mind charging my macbook pro. It does so only intermittently, I should've guessed the power was too low !
So, any luck unlocking the bootloader or even getting ADB out the USB-C ?

Would be really interesting to try using Discord on this device though

Is there nothing that's more information greedy you could run? ;p
USB-C to 3.5 mm audio only alternate mode?
Can anyone please test and let me know if a USB-C to 3.5mm analog audio jack also works - for 3.5 mm jack headphones or speaker out? More specifically, an active adapter because a passive one may not work. Such as this one: amazon.com/Tranesca-Headphone-Adapter-Compatible-Google/dp/B07M6Z2KJ4
What I do know from reading this thread is the Facebook Portal's:
- USB-C Video out (DisplayPort Alternate mode) to monitor works along with audio (monitor passthrough)
- It works as a USB-C power delivery charger
But if audio thru DisplayPort works means only audio to 3.5 mm jack will also work?
Interestingly, the official documentation (portalfb.me/2NAdtz1) claims the audio will continue to come from Portal's speakers. But people here claim it is transmitted to the monitor?
the portal burnt due to an electricity hazard overseas.
I just bought the newest Facebook Portal Mini. it comes with a browsers from Facebook. I was able to make a phone call using duo.google.com then the next day.. I lost permission to the camera: it keeps asking me for permissions.
I think they have some kind of firewall that blocks unusual behaviors

I don't really know how to do those things... But it tried scanning my portal for open ports, no ip adp connection possible. And then, with usb c connected nothing happens with adb. It can't seem to see it !
I tried enabling hidden developpers options by pressing a lot everywhere in the settings, but no luck !
Alrighty, I've got an update for you guys. It seems like FB locked out that PDF trick sadly. However, I found out that if you restart your portal and hold all three buttons down, then plug in the USB-C, it appears as a device named "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM3)". Based on what I've seen on a few threads here, that's a utility for reflashing and backing up device firmware. I believe we may be able to do stuff with this.
I am looking into getting the FB Portal TV. If the party on the other end of the connection is using their smart phone or tablet, does the image I am seeing become altered from wide screen to a vertical image
or does the unit adapt to keep the screen filled without becoming distorted in some way?

Have you been able to find out anything more with the qualcomm loader? I have been playing with mine and unable to get a utility to recognize is. It would be nice to be able to get get the fw off it.
Has anyone made anymore progress with this yet?

I have not made any progress at all. I keep checking to see if anyone has done anything at all, but I think these devices are not too popular. Hard to find any information on them at all
So I was able to get fasboot access to my Facebook Portal+ (1st Gen).
If you plug in the power and hold down the vol down + power button. It will show the portal logo on the screen and on a black box it says "Please Reboot...". If you connect to the usb-c port then it looks like there is fastboot access to the device. It's definitely locked down, but it's a start.
I've been trying to figure out how to get adb / sideload access for a while now and this is as close as I've been able to get. I'll let you know if I find out more.
