Gear S died after ~2 minutes at the pool - Samsung Gear S

I went at the pool with my Gear S to test if IP67 works fine. Unfortunately after 1-2 minutes under water (but not constantly) watch simply died. Water was under SIM flap and was also in speaker hole. I put it in rice and it's dry now but it's completly dead... Is there any way to fix it or should I use my warranty (I hope they will accept it anyway)?

Anything rated at only 1m depth is clearly not really waterproof (splash proof maybe). Just standing straight in chest deep water would put it below 1m!

Honestly you don't need to act like that though.

Agreed with the other posters, be nice.
IP67 could withstand a shower, maybe.... I wouldnt have worn in it the pool, I even take it off in the shower. Just because it states a weather rating, doesnt mean I want to test just how weather proof it is. That being said, I would try to get it covered under warranty. The rice thing is a myth, yes it will get some moisture out but the short circuit already happened.
Good luck!

I shower and bathe with my watch specifically so I can take calls. Its ultra liberating I haven't had an issue with water leak. I was considering swimming with it but I guess now I will not do that.

Not supposed to be exposed to chemicals similar to a pool. This is tested with plain water...not pool nor salt water.

i hope it is sweat resistant as can be considered salted water

Go back to your vendor and try to exchange under warranty or you can try direct with Samsung here: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/service/request
The worst they can say is that its not covered.
The excerpt from the warranty is in fact NOT ridiculous. The watch is marketed and advertised as IP67 which implies "temporary" protection against immersion in water from 15cm to 1m. That weather rating as set forth by the IEC states that the object in questions is "immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time" . The test are performed in non moving water, just water, this does not include corrosives such as salt or chlorine. Now theres a whole long explanation regarding hydrostatic pressure and the density of water at whatever temperature your pool water was at the time, how that pressure can change by moving around in the water and how it can all vary depending on what end of the pool you jumped into, how loose the watch was on your wrist, the angle and speed at which you hit the water and the curvature of the earth ( do you know what swimming looks like? ).
Honestly wheres Sheldon when you need him?

There is no DIY fix for it, its too new, nobody is selling spare parts, if they were the cost wouldn't justify it anyways.
Long story short, the watch was not meant to go swimming. Im sorry that this happened to you and I'm sure it will serve as a warning to everyone else who thought about going for a swim with their watch. Im sure whomever reads this post will stop and remove their watch before the next time they jump into a pool, I know I will.
Go back to the vendor and try to get it exchanged under warranty, if that fails then try Samsung.
This is the final answer, no clever retort or thank you's needed. Im not being a smart alec, I just happen to work in an industry that involves surveillance equipment for some weird applications and I deal with IP weather ratings and water submersion a very good amount of time almost to the point where its annoying.
Good luck , please keep us updated on how the warranty exchange goes if you so choose to go that route.

My gear 2 and galaxy s5 has resisted without any problem swimming in the mediteranean sea last summer.
I made some very nice underwater movies. No problems at all. IP 67 it's plain and clear: 1m/30 minutes ( maximum values). Any certification has more "safe" zone . Probably nothing happend to your watch even at 2 m for a few seconds/minutes BUT FOR THAT ALL THE FLAPS SHOULD BE CLOSED WELL. I never had a problem with S5, gear 2, gear S, lg watch r, xperia z1 or xperia z ultra but I always chech twice before getting near water.
BTW. In your case it seems that your watch was defective from manufacturer's faults that's why they exchanged under warranty.
Good luck next time and verify twice your flaps.

You can plug that... thing.. into the mini jack port, and it'll hang there, but i can't see the point of this. Why would i buy and drag this thing around, when i can simply use whatever i find on a desk/table?

Not because of what it is or this particular product...
My wife has one similar for her Xperia U. She says she needs it coz the keyboard is too small (OK, I can accept the argument there)
BUT THE BLOODY THING IS PLUGGED INTO THE HEADPHONE JACK,
AND EVERY TIME SHE RECEIVES A CALL, SHE HEARS NOTHING.
KEEPS SAYING ''HELO?HELLO?''
THEN HANGS UP.....
You need to unplug every time u make or receive a call. NICE....
If u must attach something, use the lanyard hole instead.

Or how about the Samsung version meant for the Galaxy Note 10.1

basically since they are only for b2b, it will not be sold by them in elsewhere.
but they did mention there's japanese/taiwanese firms releasing these stylus in oct. too bad they didn't reveal which companies.

Cracked screen - Warranty?

It seems I am one of the unlucky ones, who by accident break their phones while having it in the pocket. A week after I bought the Z Ultra, I discovered that the phone was bent, i.e. the corners were a couple of millimeters taller than the middle of the phone, which I decided to remedy by bending it back once in a while. But alas, it is broken now.
After looking at the picture, people are probably going to say, that its caused by bumping into something, but I can pretty much rule that out, as I always have the power button on the phone facing my important pants, which means that the screen is facing my left leg. If I bumped into something, then my important parts would hurt as well.
The big question is: are they going to fix it under warranty, or should I fix it myself?

As you can see, the cracks starts beneath the power button, and moves across to where the speaker is. It looks very much like it couldnt handle the stress any more, on the corners?
You've probably bent the frame too much when having it your pants pocket, and it probably couldn't handle the stress at one point and snapped.
Will it be covered by your warranty? I doubt it. Don't you have some insurance?

Yeah, that sounds plausible.
I do have insurance, but I have to pay a deductible of 140€ / $193, or almost 1/5 of the price of a new Z Ultra.

Yeah, that sucks, but do you have any choice? You can either sell it as it is for a very low amount of cash, you can keep the screen cracked and hate your Ultra, or you can invest €140 into it and also get some money back if you're going to sell it down the road.

This happened to me a week ago. I was texting and I had just put it back in my pocket and it vibrated and I went to text the person back and it was cracked and I couldn't do anything. I called the lady that finally sent me a new phone for free the last time my phone broke. This time she told me that this is a problem with the phone and has been happening to many people and I should get it done for free. I hope she is right because I have sent my phone back but I have not heard from sony yet which is not surprising because I had to email the a bijillion times last time to even get a response about my phone that they couldn't fix due to a operating system problem. This has never happened to me with other phones. Don't get me wrong I love my phone and missed it dearly since i sent it back last monday breaking on sunday. I can not wait to get it back because using an old laggy s2 is not fun. Which I have had for 2 years and never had really bad problems with it. Only lags because the rom I use is horrible and cant flash another rom because my recovery doesn't work like it should. Back on topic. I have had this phone since november and it has broke twice. I will be mad if I have to pay anything since i got this new replacement one in december. I will pay what they want me to though but paying 680$ for a phone that breaks every month is not cool. For 680 I should get a phone that last a lifetime. I am considering selling my baby. But I really don't want to even though it breaks a lot. I love it either way. I will update you if I have to pay anything but for now it is in Texas where I sent my old phone back. Ill keep you update.

Z2 - Bend like Z1?

I am considering to change my iPhone 5s with Z2, but today i read a forum post where users Z2's back shattered it self without external force. In same forum it is heard even Z1 and similar phones has same issue, where Aluminium Frame use to bend, causing phone to look mess, and glass to shatter.
Now a user in Singapore with Z2 complaining the same thing, within 3 days of his use.
What i wanna know if this bending issue is a myth, propoganda or a reality?
Are only few users affected or all phones prone to this risk?
If this thing is true? how can one buy this phone? i am all down as far as this phone is concern now. ?
Need feed back from everyone regarding knowledge to this scandal, to help others, if its thing to worry or if its not?
One of Many Posts regarding problem on net.
http://www.reddit.com/r/needadvice/...ony_xperia_z1_sucks_self_damaging_smartphone/
If you google it, you will get countless of them!
Don't know for Z2 but I can say something for Z1.
That's users stupidity and nothing more.
Z1/Z2 aren't phones you should put into your back pocket!
I'm using Z1 for a 7 months and I don't have problems wuth it.
Flaps that are protecting usb/cards are still strong (yesterday I wash my phone in water)
No scratch on it and no bending...
When you buy "glass" device for 1000$ then you shouldn't treat it like piece of crap...
If you change IPhone for Z2 you'll be nothing but extremely happy users, finally free to do anything on your device...
No iPhone that can do this

Don't forget that in Singapore it's very hot even if you don't use the phone. So it shouldn't be a problem if you don't live were it's 36 degree minimum all the time.

Thanks for replying with your 7 month experience.
As far as difference between Android and iOS concern i know it well, because my recent past phones are HTC One X, iphone 5, again iphone 5, LG G2, Galaxy Note 3, iPhone 5s.
Well, i never took Xperia Z and Z1 serious just because of its ordinary viewing angels, but ever since i seen Z2 is doing good in screen, and looks sexy and premium, i thought to swap larger screen of Z2 with smaller screen of iPhone 5s, as iPhone is satisfying me enough, i was all set to sale it and buy Z2 when it becomes available in stable price.
But then i read this thing here on XDA forum i thought Ohhh!
But your 7 month experience put me on path of Z2 again, hopefully its not serious problem, or few phones suffering or its users carelessness!

Well thanks, but i live in Pakistan where is its from 45C to 50C average for half a year in summers?
All i want to know, if this issue exists or not? as far as heating is concern, S4 heated a lot, so as many other sets, but shattering Glass, bending frame is like thrwoing 600$ in dust bin for good?
i live in thailand and it's really hot. never had any problem with shatter glass and phone bending. i even dropped it once by accident. it only had a small scratch on aluminium frame.
Yes this issue exists but like said before it doesn't crack by just laying on table. It cracks if you got too small pocket or phone takes to much pressure. If you are careful it'll be no problem.

Well you mean this phone is more weaker and prone to this physical issue then most phones? They claim it being robust phone, water and dust proof? but they made phone fragile and easier to break than most regular phones. It seems bit funny then.
Problem is that middle class people like me when spend 600$ on a phone they hope it should be fault free, because putting another 600$ for new is sad story.

Well good, which phone you are using and since how many months?
Most phones don't have a glass back[emoji6] And an iPhone is much smaller than z2 so it is more robust because the smaller the surface the smaller the risk of breaking glass. But I think there should be no problem if you're no fool[emoji3]

So You mean scenario of frame bent, glass shattering it self is not truth, its just this phone due to its size, slim profile, fragile aluminium and glass on both ends, is prone to break/bend and user need to be extra ordinary careful to prevent it, and if it happens he is confirmed fool
This water proof phone, which means its more robust then ordinary phones is actual more weaker than ordinary phone? One way or other? these doubts may force me to live with 4" screen for sometime now. if i wont buy this, i am not going to upgrade to bigger iPhone either!

was using the z1 for only 2 months. then i change to lg g2 because i didn't like the display on z1 and it heats up alot. atm i'm waiting to change to z2 when they release it here next month. :good:
I have both and neither has bent or cracked. I use a belt case at work and keep it in my pocket when out of work. These devices are not fragile but not indestructible either. If you want to break it, it can be done. A plastic bag is waterproof and dustproof also, but it can be compromised.

I can say I have almost no marks on it. Still waterproof. Solid. Great quality. No problems.
I want to sell my Xperia ZL for the Xperia Z2, how about its speaker, camera, and build quality? Easy to handle?

Well, I've run GPS under the hot sun (while being docked in car) and the phone became pretty darn hot. It worked perfect though.
I don't think cracking due to heating should be a problem. It all depends on what kind of glass they used as well.
Anyways.. I got married in Karachi in a June and had to be on drips for the first time of my life due to dehydration.. so I can feel you!

Brother, i don't buy much of its water prove qualities, one would rather be careful with it, even with water, i can say it can resist better in water then normal phones, saying this because i never had water prove phone and never adventure intentionally taking phone in water.
You suggest there is no bending, or glass breaking or self destructive qualities this phone has!
But will it Blend?

Just one little advise, if I may...
Don't sink your new Z2 into aquarium, especially not into aquarium with a sea water - your camera will be destroyed.. (not literally but it'll become unusable).
There's many Z1 users who reported bad things after such experiment.
Watter sometimes find passage and you got foggy lens (inside of device) you can't get nothing about it because you can't open it (you actually can but I wouldn't advise that)...
So...use waterproof for rain and accidentally water contact - I have my Z1 from the beginning and never tried to shoot pict in swimming pool... - I just don't trust them -
Z5 will, probably, have better technology/sealings.

you know what mate, i dont trust it either lol, it aint going in saltwater and i am actually expecting it to break, if it develops a fault it will be going straight back but i shall skip both phones4u and vodafone and be sending it back to sony. What you mean use waterproof for the rain???? i use my galaxy note (not waterproof) if its raining and its fine..... Z2 is rated ip58, if water gets in anywhere on its first day out the box then its faulty, end of.

I have my doubts about it staying fully functional afterwards as well, but apparently it can be done and it will be fine..... so i just cant resist, they'll sure as hell know about it if it breaks tho, i'll complain to every damn person employed by sony, from the ceo to the janitor lol

Well I'm sure there are devices that were under the water and survive but when I pay 1000$ for something I try not to do experiments with it...
I saw only few underwater pictures (Z/Z1) so I guess I'm not the only one who thinks like that...
But I totally understand you and if device, like Z1/Z2 have so many sealings/protection rubbers it should bear up some torture

I have a waterproof camera and a Nokia 1020. Nokia is great when on holiday and not wet, but wet days at the beach or pool were nerve racking as I always had to keep an eye on my phone with the towels and my camera never was as good at taking pics. Few weeks ago I got a Z1 Compact for wet days. Tested it at home for water proofing and all good. Great camera. Just need to set the volume button as the shutter for underwater pics as screen is unresponsive and camera button hard to use. Even took it to the waterpark with no issues.
Only problem was the screen felt too small so I got the Z2 thinking I'd give the Z1C to the wife. Got it yesterday and loved it. Based on good experience with the Z1C, I just expected waterproofing to be as reliable. After setting it up, I finally had a chance to test it by dipping into a pitcher of water and tested the camera. Camera button so much better than Z1 and all seemed to work. Suddenly I see bubbles, camera shuts off, flap warning pops up (flaps were completely closed) and phone dies. Took it out immediately and water is running out of microphone holes at bottom and apparently from around the frame. What a let down! Just hoping Sony or vendor are cool about a replacement. Had it all of 2 days. Got wet in 15 cm water and died although all flaps completely closed.
Still, compared to Z1 Compact, the body stiffness and frame flush with the glass feel far more flimsy on the Z2. Now that its got water in it, I can almost squeeze it and water seems to leak from around the aluminum frame. Contemplating sticking with the Z1 Compact for a year until tech improves if I can get my money back. Otherwise might try the SGS5. Really bummed as I loved the Z2, but I don't need just another smartphone, I need one that has a good camera and can survive the pool.

Personally I can't understand why some are so eager to dunk it in water just to test the water proofing, I mean if you have a crash proof car you ain't gonna crash it into a wall to test it.

Well, if you buy the phone to be able to use it in the water, it's better to test it out before you're in a situation where you need the phone and it just dies on you. Of course, if you never intend to get the thing wet, obviously you have no need to test this feature.
Me and @waynekirby made a little video with both our z2's video is taken with Xperia T

Well, it got it's first water test today, and . . . well it passed!
I was on the golf course using the phone as a golf GPS when it threw it down and everything got drenched. The phone has survived, but was more or less unusable when the screen was wet. Several rain drops seemed to act as finger presses, launching random programs, which was quite annoying as I had to keep drying the phone to get back to the GPS screen. But I suppose the main thing was that the phone survived the deluge

Is it safe to put my xperia z ultra in water

Hi, today i bought xperia z ultra and i like to play games on it and i was thinking about testing it in water before i go to take a bath with it, is it really safe to put it in water?
Please someone tell me if it is safe.
Thanks in advance.
Sorry for my bad English.

yes make sure covers are all closed:]
A while back I did some looking around in the Smartwatch2 threads and seen posts about bathing and showering while wearing it. There was some speculations that soapy water may have different properties allowing it to penetrate the seals, and that steam may be able to make its way in easier as it is a vapor.
Water goes in mine through the speaker. Still works like a champ! It drowns the music volume and I have to give it a view minutes to get back out. I think I poked the membrane or something but it's still visibly there.

Just be aware that some people have had issues with the "waterproofness", resulting in a non-functioning device and zero warranty.
I would honestly record the whole test on video in case something goes wrong. That way you'll have proof that it was a hardware defect that killed your Ultra and not stupidity.

and remember that the tests are on static water, not a shower, water with out surfactants (read soaps), and clean seals with NO dust on them
