Stop OTA updates - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 General

Hope this helps. My Verizon note 3 kept screaming for updates. Download bloatware free and freeze the running application SDM. This is to keep your 4.4.2 with root. I honestly don't think your missing anything on 4.4.4, it's pretty gay and more then likley the developers on our side aren't going to mess with it, they will save it for Lollipop

What is the latest on KitKat for MK2?

Hello, mine is running MK2 firmware, I545. With the helps from this forum, I rooted it and installed safestrap two months ago. My understanding back then was that CWM can't be installed to MK2. Has this been changed? Is there any way we can put KitKat to the phones like mine?

Nope nothing has changed for your phone. You'll have to wait until Verizon sends 4.4, your way...but most likely running it via SafeStrap is going To take quite some time if its even possible.

actually were temp set on that aspect we'll be able to run safestrap with 4.4 just like the AT&T and Note3 users I've got all the file templates ready even in a minute or less i'll build these "magic" upgrade / downgrade SS methods . I've got everything ready just need a leak or official firmware and modem. so as soon as someone comes privy to it please PM me. I'm sure hash will be putting his own update out very soon but we wont be waiting because there will be a workaround. all the waiting tho... this is why If i didnt have unlimited grandfathered in (17TB tethered last month eat it vzw it was proven in court tethering is legal and were able to do what we want with our phones you can't stop us.) or I wouldnt ever b willingly giving my money to a company that deliberately delays and with holds updates from customers so they can lock their crap up more... when they know and we know no matter what they throw on it we will prevail. just stupid we'll be getting 4.42 as 5.0 comes out for the rest of the world lol also why Tmobile is taking over verizon's losing a large percentage of its customers to them next year or so. I was loading 4.4 on tmobile phones in jan its now april and were still waiting. we should start a bounty for a hacker to be pulling test firmware or leaks from vzw for us

Hey thanks.. I clearly didn't know how close you guys were to getting that working for SafeStrap. Some talented people on here for sure.
And I've been debating switching over to TMOBILE myself... Doing some more research first before I jump ship. Really in don't see too too many cons.

Can't revert to 11B
It's expected. Verizon is the Apple of android now. Locking and blocking so they can find ways to make even more $ from subscribers. Its shameful, but it's business. They have maybe the best service and until people start dropping them they can pretty much do what they want.
Just hang in there and hope that someone finds a way to downgrade so you can get root and twrp back. I believe @autoprime is looking into it in another thread. That's a good thing. :good: Be mad at Verizon still, but be patient too.

He means v10b and v10c, of course, and many people are reporting the same issue. It may still be possible to revert to v10b from the OTA'd v10c, which would solve our problems with this OTA, but anyone who has not flashed v10c OTA yet should avoid it best as possible until there is better clear information about reverting.
Remember when Google first updated the Chromecast firmware and that patched the only known exploit for it ? It took a while to get around that. I think the Chromcast Devs eventually did, though...I quit following and just stayed stock.
How about instead of being furious with Verizon, you point the blame at yourself. You're the one who was stupid enough to take an OTA, despite common knowledge being that OTAs will patch exploits and have been known to prevent rolling back to older versions.
Not to pile on, but I am really surprised by the number of folks that have eagerly taken the OTA. As with just about any SW update, it's usually best to let someone else be the guinea pig. Not to say I'm not sympathetic. Still, at least your not on a Samsung. I spent the last year on my GS3 stuck in the past usually running TW 4.1.2, but at least I was free!
I had an issue, took the ota, and couldnt fix through TWRP. Flashed back to 10B stock, then took the ota, and now Stump wont work. I would imagine that if you used to .tot, and LG fladh tool, and go back to 10B, that all will be right with the world again.... At least, thats how Samsungs are, now that Stump wont work with 11C. I took it simply for the improvements, already had a camera shortcut on the lock screen

You cannot go revert back with a Samsung anymore. With release of knox on the S4 the first update after the MDK bootloader locked anyone out of reverting back. I'm fairly sure every Samsung bootloader after that on other devices worked the same way.

It looks like you cannot revert to v10b via .tot, either. Still might be a way, but things seem rather bleak about that.
What is bad for us all is that developers, already annoyed at Verizon and LG both, for good reasons, are likely see there very few Verizon LG G3 users that are ever going to be able to benefit from their work left. So, they will give hacking the Verizon G3 up as not worthwhile, maybe, and we will be stuck with a stock-only device. Its a problem to consider.
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
GS3 got Knox at 4.4 and couldn't be rolled back as I recall (might even have been when 4.3 released). As bad as that was for the unfortunate folks that took the OTA or had to do a warranty exchange, the worst part was that it fractured the development into two camps, and that seemed to expedite the winding down of dev support for that device. I really hope that isn't what happens to the G3.
FYI- I just saw this post from @autoprime basically suggesting evidence of anti-rollback code in the new BL. Not a shocker, as VZW has been employing that for a while now - at least on Moto and Samsung devices. Sigh...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56437577
Yep... First they locked down the S4...and a short time later the S3 got the Knox bootloader essentially locking everyone who updated into using TW. Safestrap helped many but AOSP was no longer an option for them. It really sucked for development on my S4 as you need to know if a room was for mdk or for Safestrap.
I'd hate to see that happen here to the G3...BUT i will not give up a custom recovery just to get the latest update.... Even if the development community never is able to get a working updated rom.

as im writing this, im readying my ultrabook to do the same. Sorry, my Samsung knowledge refers to my Fascinate/Nexus days, when the world made sense lol
I was pretty tempted to take the update. But coming from experience with Motorola, I knew better. I checked the forums first before taking it.
Not to lecture, but any time you root it's best to use the free app Uninstall Expert and freeze any potential updates. It saves a lot of heartache.
Surely this will get patched it's just going to take some time...
I hope this doesn't sound evil but I am kinda hoping this root debacle increases the value of my g3. I've been wanting to sell it but am waiting for root confirmation on the Droid turbo...

BTW, screen and digitizer are one in the same on the g3. Crack your screen and touchscreen no longer works. Just FYI

Will you upgrade to LP or not

I just wanted to find out if everyone is going to do the Lollipop update when it finally does become available for Verizon or not. Or will you just keep what version you have or stay rooted? I have been hearing that the AT&T update does not really improve anything and it does not look much different.

Nope. I have my phone setup perfectly. I'm on 10B, haven't even updated to 12B/C/D or whatever. I would update to deodexed 12B if there was good enough reason, but I definitely wouldn't jump to lollypop. I won't use lollypop until my next phone (G4 once it gains root).
I will once there is a stock based ROM to flash.

According to Drippler, LG3 users in the US on ATT system are not being able to defer the Lollipop update. If they select no to the update, it updates the phone anyway. Just putting this out FYI and confirmation.

Shouldn't be a problem if you've frozen or removed the updater like a good boy should ?
Coming from the Moto X 2014, I enjoyed 3 months of Lollipop unrooted. On a Verizon phone at that, go figure. I'm hoping to take 5.0 or whatever version is served up to us asap...
Battery life seems to have taken a bit of a plunge in LP according to this
http://blog.gsmarena.com/benchmarking-android-5-0-lollipop-battery-life-samsung-galaxy-s5-lg-g3/
What is the updater file name? I run a custom Rom but want to make sure it isn't enabled. I searched the system files for anything with OTA in it and didn't see it. But I have had to TOT back to 10B twice since I bumped the phone and don't want to be vulnerable if I should ever have to do it again. Thanks.

On VZW you should freeze the following, not sure on a custom rom
com.lge.lgfota.permission
System Updates
It depends on whether or not LP fixes the audio hiss issue. My phone is my portable mp3 player, and although I love having root, it's gotta be a good phone and good music player first. So frustrating hearing hiss while listening to music... I'd lose root in a heartbeat if they fixed this.
Lollipop is super sweet... Kinda hard not to want it on my g3 after using on my Nexus 7 2013. I mean basically with me running a ROM I have a Nexus 6 with removable battery and expandable memory lol...
I am a little disappointed in Stock lollipop on the other carriers. I do like the new notifications, task mgr, users, etc but I just like the status bar toggles as they are in Stock lollipop...
Luckily xposed is now slowly creeping into lollipop so I'd say in a month life will be sweet!
Although, real talk, if the g4 comes out with 4gbs of ram (yes I know it's not needed but I want it for future proofing) I'd probably sell my g3. But honestly lol I really do love my g3, g watch, etc and am very content hanging on!
some people still use Polaroid instant cameras.
I will update at the first second available.
Depends on if I can keep root across the OTA. I've been able to keep it from 10b to 12b, we'll see what the reports are out there. If I can keep it, and if I can downgrade back to 10b if needs be, then I'll probably try it out.
LP on my Nexus 7 (2012) has been hit or miss. After it's been up and running for awhile, my Nexus 7 will just freeze and I'll have to reboot. I don't have that issue with KK, especially on my G3. The G3 currently runs smooth and I rarely reboot it, ever. And it runs just fine.
So, I'll have to wait and see how things go with LP on this device. As it is, there is a memory leak in the latest version and no word yet from Google on if/when that gets fixed.

Securing the S6 loaded with Lollipop 5.0.1 out of the box? [For Security Junkies]

This post is for the security junkies who are familiar with the 4.3 to 4.4 crisis that some of us have experienced with VPN and security issues not so long ago. I hope to catch the attention of some of you who may also be security junkies like me who are also wanting the S6. I've been researching some issues that I'll talk about here for some time now and trust me, I've been debating where to even post this thread LOL..... so for what it's worth here we go....
Okay fellow security junkies...here's the deal...
My favorite device to date was the Note 3 on 4.3, because everything just worked flawlessly. OpenVPN worked and stayed connected beautifully along with all the other security perks that I had on my device. The code on 4.3 was much more friendlier and cleaner before it became communist on the security side with 4.4 Kitkat. Then the fall...remember when Kitkat 4.4 came out? After that upgrade all crap hit the fan for us security junkies. Trying to stay connected to VPN was a nightmare and things were just not as smooth as it once was before. Then there was that period of time when we couldn't even flash back to 4.3. Remember?
I have a Note 4, on the unfortunate 4.4.4 Kitkat running VPN, AFWall+, and Xprivacy, along with some other tweaks for privacy. Everything works great....Not Note 3 days on 4.3 great, but I'm not complaining....however, I'm a little concerned that history might repeat itself like with the 4.3 to 4.4 nightmare....
Then comes Lollipop 5.0.... and now the S6 that we all want comes stock out of the box with Lollipop 5.0.1
As a victim before coming from a perfectly working Note 3 on 4.3 to experiencing a nightmare after upgrading to 4.4, I do not desire to go through all of that again and regretting it....but it's different now because we're talking about jumping devices AND to a different version of the software.
So here's the deal:
VPN - I have yet to see any confirmation if whether OpenVPN stays connected on Lollipop 5.0.1 ? With all this tightening down on security and google screwing with the code the behavior and stability of how well VPN will stay connected is in question.
Xposed - Doesn't seem to be working well with Lollipop...bootloops to it crashing.....sucks....
Xprivacy - One of the most important of them all seems to not work on Lollipop, not because of Xprivacy itself, but due to Xposed causing it to crash. So from what I've gathered, until Xposed comes out with an update to play nice with Lollipop, we're kind of SOL until that happens. This sucks....really sucks....
AFWall+ - Still unknown on how it'll behave on Lollipop 5.0.
I keep my set up pretty simple and straight to the point and do my best to keep it clean as possible. Personally I don't like clutter and keep only the apps that I really need and use.
I've had a chance to spend quite some time with the S6 and S6 Edge and I must say that I'm impressed. Like some of you, although I absolutely love the Note 4 and will be getting the Note 5 for sure when it comes out, I do miss having a phone-phone. So call me strange or whatever, but I'm really wanting to get the S6 Edge to experience a phone-phone again and enjoy it for ~5 months until the Note 5 comes out hopefully in September.
The only thing holding me back on getting the S6 Edge is the issue with Lollipop 5.0.1 that comes loaded with it and Xprivacy not working because of the lack of update of Xposed to dance well with Lollipop. As for the VPN and Firewall, I'm pretty optimistic those will be fine.
So is there anyone else out there with similar concerns? Again, I know all of this probably would only apply to 0.1% of the people out there, but hey....for what it's worth..... I've posted it.....so we'll see....
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all and cheers to the release of the incredible S6!
I currently have an HTC one m8 on 5.01 and use openvpn all the time. Unless Samsung broke something I don't see that being an issue. Xposed will get working I'm sure just need patience as they are focusing on stability for 5.

Very good question and I too am curious about this....I'd imagine with Lp5, the encryption "protocol," would have improved, but who knows....it's hard to say....however, I do know that the security aspect of things has improved over the previous versions so in that case, I hope this translates to the stock filesystem encryption to be better...
:fingers-crossed:
Wasn't there suppose to have been an update for Xposed to work on Lollipop (w/ TW) over the weekend?
Or did I miss the memo? LOL
I take it that this is the best post to follow for now on any updates:

z3v marshmallow rom help / how to get rid of verizon bloatware

does anyone know or can guide me to any marshmallow rom for the xperia z3v please?
also, how do i get rid of the verizon start up screen and the bloatware?
I second this... sort of irritated that there doesn't seem to be a simple solution. What about using the regular Z3 ROM? Will it brick the Z3v?
I'm not an expert. But what I did was just used titanium backup to uninstall my sys-apps. I always froze the app first to see if it would crash anything (Other than the app's own error message). If it didn't I uninstalled it. I really good resource is to check out a thread describing all the sony bloat, over on the z3 forums. Another harder, but sure fire way is to install the old AMAZING rom on an earlier marshmallow version by Zachpope (I may be wrong on that name drop there) that rom was amazing. All the bloat was gone and the build prop was superb. I'd still be on it, but some of my networking stuff didn't work. Anyways, install that, check out what is and isn't installed, then revert back to your original build and get rid of what Zachpope got rid of.

Yeah along with it would seem others as well, I got a Blackberry Priv for all the problems I was having with the Z3v, VzW stopped supporting it just after I received mine, 4 months behind in updates and no Marshmallow even though there is a Marshmallow update on all other carriers Priv's. So I gave up on Android for the time being, Android is getting way to unsecured for me right now so I am eating Crow and getting an iPhone 7 Plus. Goodbye Android, Google, the carriers and phone manufactures have killed the joy we once had with Android.
I am a purist, Android is Linux, it should be free and user tweakable, take Root and unlocked bootloaders away and you are worse than iOS.
With my Linux PC I can update the OS anytime I feel like it, security updates are regular. Although Micro$oft tried to lock the BIOS it didn't succeed.
Phones are mini PCs, locking one down does not make it secure, it makes it less secure for the end user can't keep it updated and are dependent upon manufactures and carriers for updates, which those 2 will hold updates and patches hostage so you will upgrade to a new phone as they want you to.
There is a huge security mess brewing and it will come to a head soon.
