Hello!
So I dropped my S4 and the screen broke. I've tried everything I can think off to get the "hidden" photos out, but I cannot get them out!
The "hidden" files are photos you can "hide" in the Samsung Galaxy gallery app and they do not show up in KIES or when you hook it up to a USB (Not even if you use show hidden folders and files).
I dont know what to do, I dont know how to unluck the phone (I use a pincode), but the phone seems to be hooked up to my WiFi still and it's working.. (I can turn it on and if I get a new email / facebook msg the phone gives me notifcations).
Is there anyone that can help me!? I've tried to google everything I can think off, but I cant find anything >.<
Please help me because I really don't feel like paying 150 euro to get a maybe to get the photos out (Samsung support told me they MIGHT beable to fix the screen and not reinstall the phone)..

The photos are stored in a folder on the internal storage called .hide which, I'm pretty sure, you would need to use the touchscreen to show the hidden files. You'll need to go to your My Files app and go to the settings and enable the hidden folder. Know anyone else with an S4? If so, and either of you is handy with a screwdriver and a plastic opening tool, then it would be fairly easy to disassemble both and connect the working LCD assembly to the broken phone long enough to unlock the phone and do what you need to do. There's only a handful of easy to remove phillip head screws that are all the same size and then carefully getting a tool inbetween the crack that runs around the edge to pop the back chassis off, then you can disconnect the LCD assembly and do the same to the other. The connection is not very long, but is enough for you to have the display connected to the side of it so basically your phone is face down and their phone is connected and face up.

Awesome, that might work. But I cant see the screen?
It depends on the severity of your damage.
I'm making my assumptions from information collected in this thread.
If you are somehow able to browse all files in your storages, try opening the ".hidden" folder in the internal storage and see if you can manage to get them. If they need to be decoded first, again, try someone with a working S4 and just dump the files in their ".hidden" folder, let him unhide it and then download them.
If you can't manage to get a connection to the storage and browse the files (which again, I'm assuming you can as you're talking about KIES not showing your pics)
Well, not sure about the whole S4 thing, but there might be a way to flash CWM without using the touch screen and then pull the pictures using ADB. If they need to be decoded first (I'm not sure how the "hide" function works), you could then either do the same steps as above or edit your build.prop to enable USB debugging in system and use a tool for controlling your phone from your PC (MyMobiler or similar). I need some backup on this from experienced S4 users, but it might be a go.
Well you didn't mention that the LCD was not working as well, just the touch screen. So, something like this might help then:
http://www.amazon.com/Anpower®-Adapter-Reader-Galaxy-Note2/dp/B00F0DTXEQ
Or that. Depends whether you want to spend time and effort or money on getting the pics out. On the other hand, that connection kit is probably the safest solution you'll ever get your hands on.
this is great:victory:

So today I noticed that my battery was about to die and I tried charging my phone and it wouldn't recognize that it was plugged into the mini-usb cable at all. Cleaned the port and pulled the battery and now it will will charge through the cable, but neither my phone nor my PC appear to realize that the two are connected, and ... strangest of all ...
ALL USB OPTIONS ARE NOW MISSING FROM MY PHONE'S MENU.
There are no USB options under "Wireless and network settings."
Under "applications\development" I can select "Android debugging," but that is it. And it doesn't seem to do anything. My phone just charges when connected to my PC and that is it.
No "mass storage" option available anywhere. It was there yesterday--gone today.
I'm running CM 7.2.0 RC2.
The ONLY thing I can think that I did was to delete a genie widget folder from my phone the last time it was connected to my PC. I looked it up first and it is supposed to be a news and weather app which I have never used and which I didn't even know was on there ... Could that have somehow removed USB options from phone's menu?
Also the mini-usb connection is definitely loose--if I jiggle it stops charging the battery--so it could be a hardware problem ... but how would a hardware problem remove all USB options from the software?
Any advice greatly appreciated! I use my phone as an MP3 player and not being able to put music on there is just going to ruin things for me ....

Sounds like you have a bad usb port on your phone. First thing I would try is a new usb cable from the T-Mobile store. If that doesn't work then you definitely have a defected usb port. www.mobiletechvideos.com will repair your usb port on the phone, it runs around 40 bucks but the usb cable will only be around $15. I thought my usb port was bad but it turned out to be a defected cable. Thankfully.
Ps: the news and weather app deletion should not effect usb mass storage what so ever.

Confirm it's not the ROM/kernel first. Flash back to another ROM/stock and see if anything changes
Since it's charging sounds like you USB port is fine . Follow FaultExcepts advice and reflash the ROM .

Thanks to you all for responding! I posted about this in the CM7 forum as well and I'm getting nothing but silence over there.
I'll try a new mini-usb cord first and if that doesn't work I will reflash ... It sucks that I have no way to back stuff up first, since I can't copy anything over to my computer ...
Will post back with the results. Thanks again you guys!

Titanium backup.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try titanium back up.
All: I bought a new mini usb cord and tried it out. As soon as I connected my phone to my laptop, my phone displayed a "mass storage" message and I thought "Yes!" It's working! But then the message went away and my laptop displayed a message stating that there was a problem with the hardware I'd connected ...
Since then, nothing. It is exactly the same as before: phone will charge, but nothing else.
So it must be a hardware problem with the phone, or the ROM got corrupted and should be reflashed. I wish I could know for sure before pursuing either option ...
Which would be more likely to actually remove USB settings from the options menu? That is the thing I still can't figure out ...

In that case you should just reflash the ROM or flash a completely new ROM to see if that's the issue, considering that is the free option. If that doesn't work then it would have to be a bad usb port on your phone, which is a 45 dollar option from mobiletechvideos.com. . When you flash a ROM make sure you wipe data, cache and dalvik cache. I would format the system partition as well, just to make sure you get a fresh install.

If the pictures and videos are on your external sd card then you can just take it out as a precaution.
There may be an app that can do this for you if you're pics and vids are on the internal memory, since you can't connect to your pc. Google a app that backs up pictures and videos, you may find something. Just to clarify, you do have Samsung phone drivers installed on your pc, correct? You can't connect to mass storage through the computer unless you have the correct drivers installed. Also, as far as I know there is only one usb option you need checked to get in mass storage mode, and that's usb debugging. You say all other usb option are gone but that is the only option I have ever seen on any ROM, unless your talking about adb over network, which I don't think you will need to mess with that.

Your pictures should be fine. Wiping only wipes the ROM for the most part.
Thanks Itz and FaultException for your responses!
I managed to back up my videos and pictures, by uploading them to mediafire from my phone.
I decided to bite the bullet. I went into recovery to reflash, wiped everything, went to install the zips, and ... there were no zips. I know I didn't delete them from the last time I installed a ROM, which was quite recent. But they were gone. I can't add them by connecting to my PC, and I can't download them directly onto my phone, because now ... I can't boot into the ROM. My nandroid backup does not work .... Man. This is going to be a fun evening.
I ended up pulling the external SD card, putting it into my mp3 player, downloading the zips onto that, put it back into my phone, and install from there (even though I know you're supposed to install from internal memory, not external.)
It worked just fine. I have a brand new, fresh installation of CM7. And .... I still can't connect to my PC via USB. It will charge, but that is it.
Yes, my PC has the required Samsung drivers, at least I put them on their previously. And in any event my laptop with windows 7 automatically recognized my phone before this issue began, without me installing anything extra ... Now, it will not.
It has to be a hardware issue with the port.
Now I have to decide whether it is worth trying to get it fixed, sending it off, etc, or if I should just start looking for a used Galaxy II on craigslist ...

At least your up and running now and your phone can charge, so that's a plus. I encouraged a member a few weeks back who had a bad usb port, to send his phone to www.mobiletechvideos.com because they are a very trusted source. He was up and running when he got his phone back and went ahead to say the service was great and had tracking on the package I believe. Here is the thread link, in case you want to read it.

Edit: it costs $45 dollars to get your phone fixed by them so that's probably your best option in my opinion. Any other option will cost more.

I guess I'll try mobiletech as my next move ...
In the meantime I thought I might just try moving files back and forth via the external SD card ... but now I find that I can not move files from my internal memory to the external card or vice versa ..
Anyone know what could be preventing me from doing it? I just get a message that says: "Could not move file."
People are still sending me texts even though I can't read them. I can still hear notification sounds. I've gotta get a replacement quick, but I also need to get the important texts I missed. Is there any way I can get them through my mac?
To be clear, the screen is completely blank but I can still unlock it via touch pattern. It takes a few tries but Android File Transfer on the mac will tell me if it can or can't connect. If it can't, I just try again and I can get it. So the touch part still works, it just doesn't show any information.
The phone is a Galaxy Nexus. When I connect it to my Mac, I can see the files in it via the Android File Transfer window. However, I can't find the texts here.
I have the Android SDK installed and I was told I can do this:
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
However the device shows up as offline when I do adb devices. I can't figure out a way get it showing up as online without being able to use the screen.

A buddy sent me his Droid Razr Maxx after he dropped the phone and smashed it's glass screen. I'm trying to see what I can salvage from it. The phone does not show a display under any circumstances. It will boot up (I can hear the default boot up sounds). The navigation buttons light up. When I plug the phone into my PC the internal hard drive shows up. I can add and remove files. But so far, that's it.
I had hoped that I could use HDMI Out as an alternate way to see the screen but so far I can't make that work. I've got software that I've used on my own Razr Maxx to root it, to factory restore and to flash custom ROMs but I know that his phone was pure stock and I can't get to the settings I'd need to change to let the software "see" the phone.
What else should I be trying to get something from this phone? If I could make the phone functional again that'd be great, but even if all I could do was get the HDMI Out to work I'd use it as an Android computer on my HDTV (I've done this with my own phone and it's way better than the Android "sticks" but I don't like tying up my phone). Without any clue what's on the screen I've got no shot to do the things I'd normally do to modify the phone.

Ehm, the first thing I ask myself is: When the screen if broken, how do you want to use the phone?? Also when you get output on your TV - the touchscreen wouldn't work (I guess).
However, I would read the logs first, especially the kernel logs (dmesg, last_kmsg) via adb shell, and see if I can find something related to the screen. The stock kernel has DSS Debug ON, so you will see several entries in dmesg in case that the touch device responses to the kernel.
You can slo control most functions of the device via adb shell - i.e. enable HDMI (assuming stock (based) rom is installed), install and run apps, debugging and much more. But you need to know how to use it of course.

As to how I'd use the phone, assuming that the touch screen cannot be resurrected, if I can activate HDMI Out then I'd use the phone as an Android "media device" on my HDTV. This is the main reason I wanted the phone in the first place. I've read up on the Android "sticks" that plug into HDMI ports on TVs and then you can stream Netflix or access a browser, etc. They all need a separate power source (via USB usually) and most of them get poor reviews for wifi reliability, root-ability, etc. But since I've already used my Maxx HD in precisely this way from time to time I know that an Android phone could do this same thing, probably better. Assuming I can get the main functions of the broken phone to work I'd activate Bluetooth to connect a mini keyboard/touchpad. I've used that on my Maxx HD. That way you can control every phone function without ever having to touch the screen.
I've never been very good at adb shell unless I was simply trying to follow precise directions but I think I understand what you're saying about being able to input some commands using that approach. I'll read up.
I guess you are talking about the mini PCs with android. I'm. Not sure but I would say they have correct drivers for remote control - the razr would need that in its kernel first.... Only my thought.
But a keyboard or mouse on Bluetooth could work - assuming you can enable bt in the phone without using the screen..

Hey guys.
I'm hoping you can shed a little light here as i'm starting to get frustrated.. Now i've seen various similar threads along the same lines so it's obviously a common problem and anyone who's offered a suggestion to the fix on other threads, i've tried to no avail..
I've had a DHD prior to this and done the whole rooting/ROM'ing thing regularly so quite used to procedures and what to do, but that was slightly different as i did it via the advanced hack kit.. This phone doesn't seem as straightforward to do. But about 3 weeks ago i bit the bullet and unlocked my phone with the intention of rooting and ROM'ing soon after.. Everything went well and the phone has been working perfectly, no issues at all and i've activated the developer option aswell and it's USB debugged box is ticked...
However, a couple of days ago i tried plugging it in to the laptop to transfer some music onto it, but both the two USB 2.0 ports on the right don't recognise it, i get the USB device not recognised message, anything else works fine in them, the only remaining port, a USB 3.0 on the left sees the phone and does allow me to access it, sometimes i can see everything straight away, sometimes i get a blank box and have to wait and the green bar takes ages to load along the bar at the top.. I've even had what appeared to be arabic symbols at one point where it should say Internal storage.. That confused me very much!! But now it won't let me transfer anything other than a single image file to the root. I did this as a test.. It transferred it straight away with no problems, but if i try adding anything else after that, it just hangs on the copying dialog box and either i have to close it or it does it for me a couple of minutes later with the "can't copy file" and "skip this file" options.. I've also tried it on the home computer which works fine but still leaves me with the same problem. Both are Win7 64bit.
I've uninstalled everything HTC from my laptop, uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers supplied in the fastboot folder which i was told to download for the unlocking process.. Now, i don't want to have to download HTC Sync as i don't want to access my phone via that, i'd rather just use file explorer and ditch the bloatware.. I'm not sure if i'm running the correct drivers and this is the problem, but i can't seem to find them anywhere.. P.S. I'm in the UK so this is the international version..
Any help would be great as i'm tearing my hair out... I know it's probably something simple but it's refusing to work..
Hey i hope this helps

Olrite so i guess you are dealing with the same i dealt with a while ago when i was on cayanogen mod 11 on my HTC one M7 International ... there are many alternatives to transfer stuff from phone to Laptop but first lets talk about the normal one
Method 1 which you should try is ....
* Download the HTC sync manager .. its ok if you dont wanna use it to transfer data .. just install it ...
* ok so now the important one .. make sure you have window media player installed on your computer ....
okay so why windows media player ??
Well it contains all the MTP drivers you need to connect your phone to your pc ...
* you can restart your system now .. (Optional)
* now connect your device with debugging on ... grab the notification bar click on USB related notification .. and choose MTP or something like that ...i mean don't choose HTC sync manger .. choose the other one
* Now if everything went well you will se your storage in My computer ... and in Windows media player too...
Method 2....
Well if nothing works then download an app called Air Droid ...
it have some nice functionality ...
you will get to know how to use it after installing it ...
by chance if the local link given in the app does not works make a hotspot .. connect your computer to it and open a browser like chrome .. and go to 192.168.1.1:8888
Note : port 8888 is pre configured in the app so if you changed it .. use the dirrent port you used ..
If you are not laptop is not connected with your phone's hotspot then your phone and computer should be on the same network ..
Good luck ... hit thanks if it works just to let me know

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to run through the options.. I really appreciate that.. Unfortunately it seems nothing in terms of transfer via USB works (at least with this cable, it's the only one i have so can't try another at this point) on this phone anymore, i don't know why the sudden glitches, it's been working fine since i've had it but just decided to stop connecting this last couple of days, so whether that's down to drivers or the cable being dodgy etc i have no idea, but the Air droid app works beautifully and i can now transfer anything and everything, it has such a great UI too so thank you for pointing me in the direction of that.. Without it, and you, i'd still be stuck.. So i guess i no longer need to worry about cables or drivers anymore so thanks again!

Broken to the point where the touchscreen doesn't work? If so, then there isn't much you can do, unless USB Debugging is already enabled, and even that depends on which update it's on, to whether or not you can access it with a new PC without accepting the key on the phone if trying to connect via adb. If the touchscreen still works, then there is a variety of ways to retrieve texts.
