[Q]Phone will not boot into Custom Recovery please help. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello all, I am new to these forums.
I am trying to boot into a custom recovery mode but my phone will only boot into standard recovery. I just went through and flashed an old kernel, and got my root with towelroot and then reflashed a newer kernel. I don't know if rooting with towel root is part of my problem or not. I have tried both the CWM Recovery app and the TWRP app, neither of which worked. When I tied to flash a custom recovery onto my phone with Odin, it failed. I am relatively new to all of this, I am learning as I go. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be much appreciated. Ultimately I would like to get lollipop on my phone. If anyone knows a work around for that, that would work also.

I forgot. I am on a galaxy s4.

what is your bootloader version?
to check, you can use apps in google play like CPU-Z or Phone Info *Samsung*
---------- Post added at 08:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:09 PM ----------
if it is anything other than I545VRUAMDK, you can not use any custom recovery. to flash ROMs, you have to use Safestrap, and you can only use ROMs that are compatible with it (mostly TouchWiz ROMs, although there's a Google Play Edition 4.4.4 ROM that works with SS here)

I just had to reroot my entire phone and know you're pain... if you're on MDK, use flashify and update the latest TWRP after you do a FULL reroot. Worked for me... I ran in circles with the TWRP and CWM app...

[Q] Alien not working

Hello xda.
Recently (i.e. today) I made the mistake of installing navenedrob's Alien port (for the Droid X2, from the Atrix). Don't get me wrong, navenedrob's work is great, but for some reason, I've been having tons of problems with this new build. Wifi works, but Clockwork wasn't pre-installed, and when I got it from the Market, it won't let me flash the recovery on wifi and spits up an error message whenever I try to install over data only. What should I do to reinstall CWM?
Thanks!
CWM doesnt work on the x2. Install the bootstrap.
How do I do that? Can you send me a download link?

Take a look at the sticky in the dev forum. it has everything you need to know.
---------- Post added at 11:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:17 PM ----------
what recovery did you use to flash the alien rom?
I just used whatever came with my old ROM (which was Eclipse 0.8). I think that was Bootstrap, but I'm not entirely sure.

thats the link to get to the bootstrap.

Try this before flashing the rom, seems to help most people
I guess this has something to do with your previous ROM. Were you using any leaked stock JB based ROM?
Oh and btw, don't worry, nothing has gone wrong with your phone. You'll be able to get it back working

A few questions about flashing roms

I just bought a DNA and it currently has viper rom 1.2.0 on it. It is rooted, but is s-on, I really don't know if it has CWM or even how to tell? I am using straight talk on it and cant seem to get MMS to work, but it looks like Virtuous rom works with straight talk MMS. I am really not sure where I need to pick up on one of these guides just to flash a rom. Is that all I need to do to get it switched over? Sorry if these questions are easy/noob I really would rather just not brick this phone =)
Look in the general section and the original development sections for guides and pretty much any phone forum for guides. They will do a better job of explaining than me. You cant have a custom kernel on viper 1.2 and it for sure either has CWM or TWRP.
If you are s on, you have to download the zip of the Rom or kernel you want. Next, download flash gui on the market. Select the Rom or zip and it will flash the boot image. On a kernel, extract the modules and flash in recovery. For Roms, flash the zip after you flash the boot.img. try all that out, then look in the original development section for rooting and s-off. Hope this helps!

Download the "tweakker" app from the market as well. It solves many mms issues across roms.

Also, to fix the mms issue, download the "tweakker" app from the market. Follow instructions to get mms working again

Alright, I have a few additional questions then I guess, I have the Virtuous rom downloading, as well as the flash gui app. You say flash the zip after i flash the boot.img. I'm not sure exactly what you mean when you say that? Do I need to download an additional file or will the boot.img file show up in fastboot after I flash it with the gui app? Am I correct in that I should just be able to flash the virtuous rom without needing to flash a kernel also?

It probably comes with a stock kernel and you can flash your own if its NOT based on 2.04.

It is NOT 2.04, I made very sure of that when buying it after I bought the first one that was =x, luckily I got a killer deal on each of these so I'll make money reselling the 2.04 one.

He was talking about the rom, not your phone. If the rom us based off 2.04, such as viper, you can't flash a custom kernel.

[Q] S4 Wifi won't turn on after custom ROM

So I flashed the FoxHound ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2596654) found there today on my SCH-i545 Verizon Galaxy S4. I flashed it with SafeStrap, and everything works beautifully except for my WI-fi. It absolutely won't turn on no matter what I do. I heard something about a wpa config file, I tried renaming it and rebooting so a new one gets made. There's a Wi-Fi fixing option in the FoxHound settings, but all it does it download files that I have no clue what to do with. I'm very new to this stuff. How do I fix it?
You have to flash the safestrap modules that match your boot loader after you flash the ROM and before you boot. Wi-Fi won't work without them.
If you don't understand go back to the safestrap thread and read the entire OP.

Like Josh said, you just flash the kernel modules after you flash the ROM before you leave recovery. Match up your modules to whatever your build is , MJ7, MK2 etc...

Recoveries can check the md5's of whatever files your flashing. It's just a way to see if the file is still in tact and what it's supposed to be... If your on SafeStrap I think there's an option in there to turn off md5 verification under advanced maybe. I check md5's prior to flashing either on my PC or an app on the phone. I don't bother while in recovery. That's just me though

Back to TMobile need recommendations. My S5 I bought used is running F0j4 and is

Stock and lagging as heck. I have always rooted and am almost done with rooting the TMO S5. I am looking for a rom that is complete and does not lag. I have always used the Stock roms on my other samsung verizon phones and felt the most comfortable with them.
Which is the Fastest lag free rom for the TMO s5 and closest to stock minus bloatware etc.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I want to support the guy that made the hispasian kernel how do i do that.?
i am on f0j4 to use your area51 rom do i need to be on og6? is flashing back as simple as using the bootloader and stock modem tar's in odin and flash back? Then can I flash the v9.6 of your rom onto my phone through odin as well using the pds button? or do i need to find a 0g6 version of the rom and flash that first?

area51 is oj4. if you want to support hispasian kernel you can flash it over the kernel used in 51. You might need to install the correct supersu but i would think it would work fine.

I got rooted I am just getting ready to flash the new rom. I used the hispasian kernel and sent him some love.
I don't need to stay with it if there is something better to run with the area 51 rom.
My question now is as follows? I already am running f0j4 do i need to flash the stock modem and bootloader? Can I just skip those steps and go straight to the odin and flash the rom?

I guess it would depend on the method that was used for getting the phone to OJ4.
If it was a full install then your bootloader is OJ4 which the area51 is based off of.
My modem and bootloader is OJ4 however others have said OG6 works as well too.
If your OG6 or OJ4 then you dont need to flash a modem or bootloader.
Also Area51 and 9.6 are flashed in custom recovery not odin.

I got to Oj4 by OTA I assume. When I bought the phone off of Craigslist it came this way.
I maybe confused in regards to V9.6 and Area 51. I though that Area 51 was the rom and it was currently in Version 9.6.
I have downloaded it from the download tab on this forum link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...t/maverick-5-1-1-improved-edition-v2-t3159387
It says it is version 1 when I download it. Area 51 v1.zip to be precise.
I was also planning on following the instructions on this page #3 forum post to flash the rom. Is this wrong? Am I going in the wrong direction?

Post 3 is not needed if you are on OJ4 already. Area51 and 9.6 are different roms. you do need to flash in twrp and install the rom from within twrp.
so step 4 and 5.
malbert16442 said:
Step 4
Close and then reopen Odin, pull the battery for 30 seconds, pop back in and boot into download mode all with your phone disconnected from your computer. Now grab the TWRP recovery image from here https://dl.twrp.me/klte/ (I use 2.8.7.0) and place into the PDA button inside odin, uncheck F Reset Time and Repartition then flash or click start.
Step 5
When step 4 completes, now you can do the 3 finger boot into TWRP recovery to flash V9.4 of this ROM.

However post 3 is old you would flash area51
Just for future reference. This section is only for developing. There is a Q&A section where you can post for questions like this. No offense but people always go crazy when others post in the wrong section.
