I've already gotten redraw twice on my phone and I'm really surprised, I don't think ever getting a redraw on my note 4. Anyone else getting redraw? Is it because of touchwiz or bad memory management?
Sounds like a faulty phone. Return while you still can.
I get tons of redraws. Battery life is atrocious as well.
What is a redraw?
Sent from my SM-G925F
When widgets and stuff have to reload on the screen when scrolling, leaving apps, etc..
I've noticed this too sometimes, its gotta be software...hopefully a firmware fix should sort.
yup its software. everyone says free ram is wasted ran. well when you have the system only leave you 400 mb of ram left or you apps, then there is a problem. yes, out of 3GB, most times, you'll see we only have 400 mb ram for our apps hence all the redraws..its quite bad.
Ok I'm not the only one who's having this issue. I think I had one redraw with my note 4 in like 5 months. @martinezma99 What am I supposed to tell them? "oh I'm getting redraws, I need to return my phone." @Rippley05 Yes battery like is kind of ****ty on my end too.

I don't think ram is the issue most of that ram taken up is pre-cached apps so it should be the other way around. I have the same amount of free ram on my note 4 and no redraws. Even worse nova keeps crashing.
Switched to Nova. No redraws as of yet.
This is why I never bothered with Samsung after my S3. Constant re-draws due to its crappy software. You'd be disappointed to see this on a £100 ZTE but not a £750 Samsung device.

I hope a software patch can fix it. The note 4 has no redraws.
I got redraw twice, it's really due to TW or kernal
using Nova or Apex may improve it, but it still have bad memory handling
I dont think it will be fix.... at all, given samsung had this issue since S1
I will immediately flash a better rom/kernal once available,
this edge is running slower then my old LGG2 with custom rom, how sad

I had tried two ICS roms so far as we lose over 100mb in useable ram going from gingerbread to ice cream sandwich. Just wondering if all of the ICS roms are like that or not?
Any idea why we lose 100mb? I'd really like to have it back
It seems like that RAM is being allocated to integrated graphics and I did notice this across the board between dagr8's and smartguys port of team perfection ROMS.
Subscribed for more information, good question if we can change allocation.
Of course all of the ics roms will have the same amount of usable ram. They all use the same kernel, the stock kernel in the leak, cause without source it's pretty much going to stay that way.
I don't get the obsession with usable ram... It's Android, free ram is wasted ram. Stop worrying and let the lmk do its job.

There's this misconception that used RAM = slower, laggier performance and that also is not the case.
People need to check their Windows PC conceptualization of RAM usage at the door.

you are correct. Samsung dedicated more ram to the video card, which is probably to fix the black crush and gradient issues that are in the stock rom. Apparently the video ram allocated in gingerbread cant drive this monstrous display like they thought.
it does suck losing it, because its just that much less left for multitasking, but it fixed the display issues so its a good trade off for me.
also, this issue is not in android devices with tegra 3. With tegra 3 the video card has dedicated video ram, meaning that a 1gb android device shows 1 gb of total ram since its not shared with the video card. This is great because it means better multitasking because more apps stay in memory.

The obsession with usable ram is smoothness, it makes a difference, if it didn't why aren't we still all using 512mb phones?
Once the ram is filled up swapping has to occur, when this happens cpu cycles and flash read/write cycles are introduced and they slow down your experience..
Losing 100mb of ram is a big deal, its over 33% of available ram for me. And it does effect performance unfortunately.

It feel totally makes a difference, I have been complaining about this issue for the longest and all I hear is that it doesn't do anything to our phone. If it doesn't do anything why do I keep getting a message that states that I have no more ram and that it will close everything to free up ram. This is one thing that I really don't like about Android, I sure hope that this changes in the future, because no matter how much ram is installed on our phone we will always have an issue because we cant control what apps we can fully close..

100=1000/3? You might want to double check that one.
No matter how many tabs I open in chrome, along with beautiful widgets and Facebook, 2 email accounting syncing and Engadget, joystick, reddit and XDA apps running I never take a performance hit.
My advice is to spend less time running quadrant, your rams are being out to good use.

Correct.. I lost 100mb or so of free ram, which forces the phone to swap more often. If we lost it to help the video card then that's fine, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else.
Maybe with an official build of ICS the sluggishness will be better...
Interesting point here... I saw a screen shot of an international Note on ICS and the max free RAM was at 803 MB. Maybe its just an issue with our ics leak that we have so little free RAM?

Been doing some testing on this. It appears that limiting the background applications to three returns the free memory back to gb levels. Been testing this all day with my objection rom, and my used memory has not gone above 472 used with 3 background applications running. That leaves plenty of room to run my games in the forground or office applications. Phone has been running smooth and with out error.
In objection rom to limit the back ground applications. Settings /development options / limit back ground process.
Also been looking at my wife's nexus with non rooted ics. Her phone shows 728 Meg of available ram. Not sure why our leaked version is showing only 656.

Thanks! after reading this post...I went into the ICS settings on Unofficial ROM and set the settings to 3 background and kill apps on exit..it improved A LOTTTTT....Ive been lurking a long time and this is the best advice I have read!
So, I noticed a bit of odd behavior and wanted to double check with you all.
I had enough background processes running that ended up leaving less than 150mb of free RAM. Every time I hit the home button, Sense 4 would reload. I figured I would uninstall any programs (in this case Open Signal and switched from swype to the HTC keyboard) so that the phone would have more than 150mb RAM and voila, no more reloads.
Has anyone experienced this behavior under similar conditions?

I'm beginning to think Sense may be a resource hog. I was quite sure phones didn't need more than 1GB of RAM yet, but Sense is proving me wrong. When MikLatTE comes out, perhaps I'll root and unlock my phone. I know Mik's ROMs are always optimized while providing an enhanced stock experience.

Back when LauncherPro was the best launcher available, I used it. It eventually because too bloated and ran slowly on my 4G, but I still loved it for the scrolling dock and customizable home screens. The developer eventually decided to do a complete re-write, but never delivered. Rumors are he is still working on it, but I gave up hope about a year ago when he was about eight months in and didn't offer any updates.
I honestly don't have a problem with Sense. I wish the dock could scroll to give us more access to apps along the bottom of the screen, but I don't seem to run very many apps on my phone anyway.
I have 120mb free according to my task manager and get no reloads at all. I am running the stock with goodies rom.
And isn't unused ram wasted ram? I'd rather the phone use all it can even if it doesn't need it. It is unfortunate the processes the phone chooses to close when it does need more ram are not the best choices at times though, like the launcher.
I'm not even able to get under 150 mb lol. I'm trying. I'm playing music, have 2 browser windows, on the XDA app, checked Facebook and then checked twitter. I assume the phone is aggressively closing apps behind me? I have it set to only all 4 processes. Maybe that's it?

I don't seem to understand that why do the sIII has too less free ram, it doesn't have HTC sense either, but so what's the problem
Comparison on normal basis:
Free Ram on:
-HTC explorer = 240
-SIII = 340
-Optimus one = 330
Q1
Can someone tell me what app or the list of useless apps that are ram hungry?
Q2
Why do all devices have less ram example, Optimus one has 512 mb ram and available 421 with cm9
S3 has 1Gb and available around 760
Why, and if it is system reserved then why do we see system apps in taskillers

'free' shows 778MB after conversion from KB to MB (1MB = 1024KB)
That 1GB includes hardware-reserved locations suche as for the GPU which, unlike mid- to high-end desktop computers has no real dedicated memory. Additionally there are the camera app (especially video encoding is notoriously high on RAM due to the codec specifications), the modem, ...
I'm also not sure if that 1GB is, as hardware manufacturers often tend to do, 1'000'000'000 Byte (1 GB according to hardware manufacturer'sIEC definition) or 1073741824 Byte (as defined by SI and adopted by software manufacturers)
That would reduce the capacity by a further 7.37% on RAW storage.

You shouldn't be using Task Killers. I still remember them being a de-facto requirement in Eclair, but since Froyo they are obsolete and cause more harm than they can do good.
(At least in theory, memory management only recently with ICS got reliable and performant enough to completely get rid of them)

Get houmiak Task Manager from Market and look for yourself. Many useful features are completely unnecessary for most of us, so you can freeze them to gain memory. (Don't uninstall since you can defrost frozen apps instantly if you ever needed it)
Those included for me the Exchange service, Allshare, ... . There's a whole list of apps which are safe to remove.

"Free" memory is a very interesting defition. What do you call 'free' memory?
If an app is closed, should Android immediatly remove it from Cache? You'll probably say yes to increase free memory.
However there are multiple reasons why it's not done
- free memory is wasted memory. If the phone doesn't use it, what's the point of having it?
- it doesn't cost anything in terms of CPU-cycles to "remove" cached apps from RAM whenever the space is needed [*]
- Should you multitask back in the app, it's immediatly available. Depending on the app, even with everything exactly as you left it
[*] Well it does, but not more than immediatly removing it when the app is closed.
If you work a lot within the same app, chances are that your free memory is far below 1MB since it keeps everything in Cache if it should ever be needed. By exiting or killing an app that value increases since some data is always freed. But that does not mean the phone will magically get faster. If you still don't believe me; what if I told you that there is NO major operating system (Mac OsX, Windows NT, iOS, Linux, BSD, ...) that does not cache. You just don't see the raw values Linux shows on most of them, but faked values where the cache is substracted.
If you want details, I recommend reading about Paging ("Swap") and In-Memory Caching on Wikipedia. They have some excellent articles.

wow, you lucky s3 fellow, i have been experiencing ram issues, when I say that, know that I have considered the fact that more RAM used the better - more apps in memory, improves app switching/launching speed(all that philosophical BS which people give with pride, when someone posts a query on RAM. My RAM exceeds 700 MB and goes up to 796 MB with less than 50 MB at times; and this is with 10-15 trusted lightweight apps installed, This was prevalent since the stock firmware ICS and even is present after the JB update. More RAM used is good only when it doesn't affect performance, and doesn't force apps to struggling to stay in memory, causing them to frequently restart.
though i found a partial fix, which gave a lil speed boost -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1787263&highlight=ram+problem
This helped me a lil(Disabling ripple effect in lockscreen), though to totally resolve the issue, i might have to go for a custom rom/kernel or hope for sammy boys to release an update soon -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1926380&page=3
I've noticed the higher version of android I go up on my phone, the more ram applications use and the system itself does.
So my question is, when is it that our phones won't have enough ram to handle more than one app running? The max my phone can handle with 403 system ram using the devil kernel on JB is like about 2-3, then the app restarts or refreshes.
What about you guys?
Hmm I've felt that the higher, the less ram. I was on slimbean and I had 180+ available ram all the time. Well, when playing music it would drop to 170 mb, but its still really good. Right now I'm on aokp and I have music, kakaotalk, Google services, lookout, android keyboard all taking up ram under running apps and I still have about 160 mb free. Aokp has this performance tweak that controls how much ram will be free on every reboot. That's why I have so much free ram even though my total is only 378 mb. You should try aokp. Its really nice

Haha, sorry I find that funny. GB has always been slow and unstable. Froyo was good thanks to Bionix and Fishman. Even though GB looked nice and was fun playing around with, (LOVED Sensation ROM and RevoultionROM JVQ) they began to lag after a while and unfortunately GPS did not work. ICS was really nice but it had the EU bug. JB is (obviously) the fastest version.
Also, the phone WILL lose 720p recording on 403 mb of RAM, but thats why you use 391 mb. I dont notice a difference between ~10mb of RAM. I dont know why you would prefer 366 mb on gingerbread, (which is really slow compared to JB) as opposed to JB's 391 mb.
Android has been trying to smooth itself out so to run the OS itself should be enough. You can freeze the system apps you don't need so they won't automatically load themselves. To run newer games you will need a device with more ram though.

Maybe you need CM7 and glitch kernel. Seriously.
The thing is Vibrant doesn't have enough memory to smoothly handle multitasking and avoid casual lag (especially when pressing the recent apps button) on v4.x.x OSes.
It's great that a lot of developers spend their time porting ICS and JB, but actually I need a working and responsive phone.
Think about it, if it were false then we wouldn't have any need for newer models.
Why buying a GS3? I can run JB on my Vibrant! wooo!
Of course this is just my humble point of view, I'm not partecipating in a political debate.

As I said, its no gs3 but for an almost 3yr old device this vibrator is buzzing strong!

I agree... for a three year old phone these things kick ass. Im running SlimBean 2.8 which is insanely stable and responsive and quick... I have no lag issues and no force close issues and my RAM is 277MB used and 132MB free, give or take, thats with Update Me, Google Services, Keyboard, and Facebook running. I can use FB, Slacker, any browser I want... never have issues and the phone feels smoother than stock GS3 IMO... I have processes set to 3 as well and have never had a problem. Just remember we only have 512MB to work with... :silly::highfive:

It's the Galaxy S5 "Zoom" for anyone who doesn't already know.
Smaller screen, bigger camera.
Whatever happened to the S5 Prime?
The one that was supposed to be:
805 processor (64 bit)
QHD 5.2 screen
4GB Ram
Most of that would be icing on the cake, but the fact that the S5 stuck with 2GB RAM is really a big reason I'm not jumping on upgrading. Heavy multitasking with a number of apps running is just so sluggish with 2GB RAM.

hmm S5 2GB ram is getting the job done , I haven't found sluggish performance what so every in heavy multitasking & GS5 is smoother then Note 3 that holds 3GB.
The LG G2 with 2GB is a different story though , After kitkat update device performance became shot on many levels.
A great benchmark video found at ATT GS5 forums,

3gb isn't really required right now. Android apps are not that advance. Unused RAM is wasted RAM, AOSP always helps with the "sluggish" you speak of

Wish that was the case for me. Even with a full wipe and clean install after about a half a days worth of normal usage my phone constantly is hovering around the max in RAM. I'm constantly having to goto the RAM manager to clear memory, otherwise tasks start to really become hung up in the response time.
Even things like a google search will become so lagged that the working circle just keeps spinning. Once I go and clear memory the search is back to normal like you would expect.
Unfortunately, this solution has to be repeated about every half hour and it's just really a major annoyance that it seems to be in need of more ram as my resources constantly seemed to be pushed to their max.
So why is my phone so slow and not responsive unless I clear the RAM if unused RAM is wasted RAM?
Even with clearing it, the least it will go down to in terms of use is .96GB - and typically shoots right back up to 1.37, 1.42, or 1.44 GB is use within a matter of minutes? !

Like people above me said bloatware. Have you even rooted? Or disable apps running in the background? Your never going to win by constantly closing apps ever so often. Let me tell you a secret, they will keep restarting back up. Most users outside of xda won't notice this, meaning almost everyone who buys this phone. Since you come here, when Roms come by, get them!!
