[Q] Mic quality - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone tested out the mic quality in loud conditions? My old HTC One M7 had great mics, didn't peak at all at a Redbull Thre3style tournament: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZBmY73VBvo
I'm curious if the S6/Edge can do as well.

I have tested my s6 mic with a 2x 300 watt rms with 15 inch drivers pa system and I must say that the mic's are realy sensitive and good for normal video's but it has a negativ effect on gigs and clips easily on high db. Here is a test video I made and if you can't see the video just say it and I fix that but normally it shuld work: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0Kc_erpRrfKR0ZldlBfMTNJWlE/edit?usp=docslist_api

Can you guys do a favor for me? Could you test your secondary microphone on the top side of the phone? Mine doesn't work at all when I tried to register sound with it by blocking the bottom side main microphone. The signal if very very weak...
Thank you in advance.

Thanks for posting this!
I have a nokia 808 that has the nokia microphone technology that will take up to 140db without clipping. Unfortunately it's a symbian phone so time for a new one since no one is building apps for symbian these days. I wondered if the S6 mic clipped and now I know that it does sadly. I couldn't get anyone to confirm this, but your post did, so thanks!
BTW, have you tried to record audio only using any of the apps that let you control microphone gain?

Does the SGS2 sport 2 (two) speakers?

One thing that always bugged me with the SGS is that, with the help of Supercurio & hardcore, we got the use of some beautiful sounding earphone output but the speaker output was very poor.
Also, why always only one speaker? The SGWifi now has stereo speakers which should make them sound much better and the iPhone4 has them, but my question is: Does the SGS2 have dual speakers?
The only picture I've seen on the back has ONE speaker on the lower side but I can't see the other side.
Many thanks.
The product page on At&t states the captivated had dual speakers. Shrug

I remember reading somewhere that it has dual speakers.....
Problem is I cant remember where I read it now.
I would think one speaker is the norm, especially on super-thin smartphones. The stereo speakers on my Nokia 6233 five years ago were awesome.
Dont forget you phone aint no ghettoblaster!
It wont sound good no matter how many or what kind of speakers you put in there... At least to someone who has sensible ears. It should be loud enough so it wakes you up in the morning and so you hear when someone sent you an sms/calls you.
The only use of dual speakers is to annoy other people in a public settings - I'd rather have a thinner/lighter/cheaper smartphone than such a useless feature.
I really HATE people who use phone speakers in public transportation. If I wanted to hear their music I would put it on my phone Only feature it is good for is for your notification sound/ringtone or in private situations.
Don't forget that what you want or don't want doesn't always apply to what other people want or don't want. I would love to see dual speakers to get a little more clarity and a little more volume. There are several times that I've used my phone to play music in a group setting because, while the speaker isn't the best, it's the best we had. For example, Tuesday nights are poker night. I'll probably throw my phone on Pandora just to play some background music.

my old HTC had dual speaker, and it delivered real stereo instead of monofied stereo on the standard single speakers phones

[Q] Can we improve the sound quality on live concerts?

hi,
i came from an iphone4, and the only thing im missing on SGS2 is quality of sound captured on live concerts. Iphone 4 does a pretty good job on this area.
Can we improve the capture of sound, cause records with a lot of distortion. Put him like an iphone4?
tks

Get the "TapeMachine" app and experiment with the 2 different microphones and the gain.
Beyond that, it's mostly a hardware limitation.

It looks like TapeMachine only increases gain and doesn't decrease it
well, tks for the answers.
but im talking about the sound captured with the camera, small clips on video, but if is hardware limitation there's nothing we can do.
EDIT:
i saw that
Anyone tested this on live shows?
Have you tried the Hx Camera Mod? The sound after replacing the camera.apk is much better! But you need root!
Go to the android development forum for gt-i9100.there u gonna find a.post by potatoman for replacing the stock camera app.aftr replacing u get to record videos i at 192 kbps frm d stock 64 kbps and the audio quality of videos is highly increased.though u need root for it.
PS-Am taking it that u wanna increase the sound quality of videos coz who records conerts in audio only format :-D

I'm having the same problem, while filming. The audio is over saturated on loud volumes as the audio input seems way too loud. I wish there was a way to decrease gain.
I wonder if a better audio quality encoding is going to help if the recorded sound is already distorted... it might even make things worse.
Anyway, please let us know.
Virtual Recorder does a quite good job whilst I record my band's rehearsing. We play freaking loud but VR has got a preamp control so it may work well on live gigs as well.
in the market search for VirtualRecorder
Hope this helps.

Whilst my mod does improve audio recording quality, it doesnt really do it with this situation in mind. The gain is left stock, just the encoder settings changed. This means all you'll get in concerts is a higher quality recording, but still distorted because of the gain.
All I can suggest is to try some of the recording apps on the store (I Like VirtualRecorder and Tape Machine, VR has a control but I havent tested at a concert yet) , you are correct when you thought gain control would fix it. The mic on the SGS2 is very small and sensitive, so it distorts lots when recording extreme volumes. Turning the gain down would therefore help.
Good luck with your search, I hope you like and continue to use my cameramod anyway

Hey Potatoman, im using your mode now, and is awsome. Good Work. Lets see on live show this weekend. I will post some videos on youtube after.
Can you tweak the mod with an option to reduce the gain? Or do it automatic like the iphone? Just a though to an update.
Tks
Regrettably the section I modded didnt have anything for gain, and even if it did it would mean when you try to film normal settings with the video camera it would be too quiet. Plus, it's not really feasible to swap out the APK every time you want a different gain, so I dont think my mod method would be suitable even if it was possible.
Who knows though, maybe the distortion was just low quality files, in which case yay I fixed it without trying ^_^'
I go to Dream Theater concert on Sunday, and make a few recordings to test qith the your mod Potatoman.
I will post here the videos after.
Tks for the reply
Thank you Chalger and Potatoman. TapeMachine only increases gain (from 0.3dB to 20dB). VirtualRecorder has an auto gain mode - a preamp auto gain mode - but actually nothing to decrease gain.
Anyway, like Bananaz, I am trying to find a way to get less distortion when using the camera. I am looking forward to hearing about Bananaz' concert... I do hope Potatoman's great cameramod will make things better.
Why don't you try just watching the concert instead of making low quality shaky recordings of it that nobody but yourself wants to see. I can guarantee you that 95%+ of the people standing behind you at the concert while you're recording want to take your glowing, distracting, irritating square of light and ram it firmly into one of the holes on your body.
Just a suggestion.
Edit: in fact that's a great idea for a camera mod. A button that allows you to turn off the screen but still record video. I've seen a couple of occasions where someone has grabbed a camera being held up in their face by the inconsiderate idiot in front of them, and then thrown it across the venue, accompanied by cheers from the rest of the crowd. A mod might save someone losing their phone...

[Q] Can we enable the speakers to go stereo?

I checked the other speaker questions but didn't really satisfy me.
As you can see with our Z Ultras the earphone and speakerphones look to be the same (symetrical). It reminded me of the HTC One which has the best front forward speakers when watching a movie, and also have symmetrical speakers.
Is there a way we can boost the left earphone to match the right when watching a movie like the HTC One speakers? I am hoping it's not a limitation of the hardware earphone because if we could boost the left speaker to match the right it would be awesome!
Anyone know anything about it?
Thanks!
Getting audio from anything other than the person on the other end of the call is not possible. I'm also pretty sure the earpiece speaker would break if you pumped the volume up that high (the conference option while in a call will activate the "big" speaker, i.e the speaker at the bottom).
- Mono = 1 (Ultra)
- Stereo = 2 (HTC One)

Dude, they are not symmetrical at all. You're confusing the speaker with the microphone. The loudspeaker is at the bottom side, near the corner. Try playing some audio and cover it with your finger and you'll hear difference.

D'oh! I didn't realize that wasn't the speaker. I think the next Ultra should follow what the HTC one did because it would be perfect!
Thanks for the clarification, unk_damnation!

I realized now that i failed in my previous post. I though you asked if it was possible to use the second - in-call ear-piece, as a regular speaker I'm a little slow today.

Sony STM10

Hey guys
Got my Z2, and loving it 85% of the time, still a few kinks id like ironed out, but hey ho! Anyway one of the biggest things I think will be an issue is the microiphone. Doesn't seem a great recording source for anything loud or bass heavy.
I have seen the STM10 that you can get and its an intriguing bit of kit! Anyone got any reviews or experience with one? Its mostly going to be used for videos of music at festivals etc and would love to know if it is up to the job.
The other thing is it seems quite cumbersome, and wondered if anyone has any alternatives? It wouldn't be ideal to have with me at a music festival really (damage and or loss after a few ciders!) so is there a smaller one thats as good that anyone knows of?
Any info would be great

Hey mate, I'm chasing an external microphone for my Z2 too. I've enquired with Sony on FB and they said they'd get back to me soon so fingers crossed. In the meantime the Edutige EIM-004 looks very promising as it has a much better response to loud noises than their EIM-001. There's some Youtube videos of it in action at concerts and the difference is HUGE.
Here's the link if you're interested http://www.edutige.net/shop/eim-004/
I'll keep you posted if I hear anything about the STM10 too!

If you have the noise cancelling headphones you can use them as a microphone. Just change settings to microphone in smart connect.

Headphone's stereo mic
well yeah xD too loud is too loud! even headphones stereo mic can't help you there.
p.s how much would a STM10 cost ?
Just a Tipp....
Did you guys try the stereo recording feature? You need to connect the nc-headset, so the phone uses the build in mics in the earbuds. Its a big difference in comparison to internal mic.
But the iblazr one has a built-in battery, the 3.5 mm connector is use only for data transfer, probable reason is that they wanted to be cross compatible with ios and android. So with a built-in battery, I think Sony could very easily pull-off a xenon flash accessory that plugs in to either the usb or 3.5 mm port.

Cider, lol.
So how many people have the stm10 mic? I'm really keen on buying it this weekend its just a matter of seeing what people actually think. I've seen some reviews but I'm not 100% on it yet

I own the STM 10. The quality of recorded audio is way better
I have STM10 and used it once. I can't judge the quality as I found that the sound is more or less the same (internal mic quality is good).
I want to connect an ordinary 3.5mm external microphone to Z2, but couldn't achieve that yet. This CTIA jack is really interesting, and has 5 pins.
Any advices how to do this?
I also have the STM10 and can confirm that it is very good at recording sound. Particularly in loud environments. I was at a gabba techno night this weekend and recorded some video with the microphone attached and I was very impressed. I will post the video to give you an idea later on this evening. For the money (around £30) it is well worth purchasing and looks pretty sweet when attached as well.
Hello everybody !
As i promised, here it is a video of Beyonce and Jay-Z concert at Stade de France that i record in UHD with STM10 with my Xperia Z2.
I confirm that the quality of the mic is just great !!! I'm really happy that i bought this mic before this concert
Enjoy !

Audio quality on the Xperia X

Hi guys and girls.
I am looking to purchase a X to replace my current faulty phone.
I often use my phone as a lecture recorder, and I was wondering what the recording quality is like? It is good enough that I can still make out a lecturer with the thickest of accents.
Thanks,

I hope this will be helpful. What phone were you using? for recording? Look, in my opinion, the sound quality of the X's mic IS AMAZING. I don't know if it's because I had a bad phone previously, but I will give you some examples.
+Can record from big distance
+Can record when very noisy and won't be distorted
+Can record voice/voices talking even from a fair distance VERY clear (sounds like real life)
+I tried recording my mechanical keyboard, the sound I got beats most videos I have found on the internet (was more realistic and clear)

But yeah, took your advise, and bought the phone. On superior quality, it's absolutely superb even when files sizes are 500mb+ for 40-50 minutes.
