So I use my S6 Edge as my daily driver and have tons off apps open at the same time. My free ram drops to under 100mb and my phone really slows down at this point. Heard the 5.1 update was to fix this. Since this update has recently been released on T Mobile can anyone please confirm if the Ram management issue is fixed after they updated to 5.1 from 5.02? I love this phone but am on the verge of shifting to the M9.
Thank you
5.1.1 doesn't give you more ram... It has 3 gigs, that's it. If you're using more, look for a phone with more ram.

That is true. However, the 5.1.1. update solves a lot of issues with RAM management that 5.0.x has.
My Nexus 5 had the same behavior on 5.0.x as we see on the S6, but with the 5.1.1. update they went away, which is what people hope for now.
My guess is that they rolled it out to t-mobile customers to test it before rolling out to everyone.

Yea but OP is not talking about that though. The memory problem kills apps in the background, causing them to constantly reload. Also, that issue hasn't been fixed.

Not on this phone it hasn't.
I changed the build.prop and since then my phone just slowed down majorly when using a few apps. I've now gone back to the default build.prop and it actually seems better.
Yes I was talking about ram management. Is there absolutely no difference in the 5.1 you're using @Oliv3 ?

Surely there must be something or a leak from somewhere as i assume this isn't normal
Added 4 screenshots to show what is currently running in the application manager
The top one above facebook that you can't see is settings which is at 30MB

woh thats wierd !!!
are u experiencing any lag in the interface ??
I see a whole lot of bloatware that should be removed and will free up RAM.
high ram usage but almost no lag.
@Claytop: you should remove some bloatware. Free ram will be ok. This why I wish S3 has 1.3-1.5GB of Ram!
S2 LTE with 2GB will be interesting

As this is my first Samsung product I am not sure what it bloatware and what is needed!
Surely it just has the same things installed as every other?
And as for effecting performance, the interface does seem slightly laggier then when i first opened it up yesterday, it just seems to have started today
I assume you're a windows user?
If this isn't affecting the performance of your phone when the device is doing exactly what it should, it's using the ram instead of wasting it.

You dont have to reboot so often but sometimes it stops all the apps running on the backround
I will see how it goes..
Just one other thing, I have noticed that on my battery info page, i have used 67% of my battery with the screen being the main hog(understandably) with 48% but Cell Standby is running at 37%
Is that a normal figure you would expect to see or is it too high?
Hey friends i recently updated my s3 to jelly bean via kies, after the update my battery life has reduced drastically plus my RAM usage is always high, sometmes dialer, messaging window closes and recently it got restarted also dur to excess usage of ram, kindly suggest because there was no such problems wen fone was running on ICS.

well this is my story, sry I am of no help to you but at least I figured out the options I am left with.
I got my s3 on 11th Nov and since then I am experiencing horrible ram usage.after few hours the ram crosses 750MB goes upto 800MB and phone slows down horribly also causing the apps in the memory to restart(finally after few hours the phone restarts and back to normal memory state for few hours then again the cycle begins). this problem was prevalent on stock ICS and also after the JB update. 4 online complaints and 2 visits to the service center, yet unsolved. the first visit to the service center their tech guy tells me "You are supposed to keep on clearing the RAM". even after explaining everything in detail. he gives me that crap. eventually after convincing him, he consults with others and says if the firmware isn't loaded properly that shyt tends to happen. but yet nothing is solved, even after second visit, when he again did the same thing, rolled back to stock firmware and gave it to me.
Firmware Updates and rolling back didn't solve anything for me. It is most likely a software issue only, well though am not sure, I am planning on loading a custom ROM or a stock firmware of different region. at least that will help me identify the root cause.

my refrence for smooth means in sense of app opening & multi tasking the new update is fast when compared to last update for our device....
and ram usage is somewhere between 632 - 820mb for me after the new update when compared to last update it was some where around 820- 1gb
Has the battery life improved? I average around 0.4 watts per hour on the NH3 ROM which is what I used to get on Jellybean.

Try a DedS kernel. Sometimes, it fixes Wi-Fi, and ruins it at others.
For AnTuTu, try three times and take the average. The benchmark may not be accurate, that's it.

I flashed v2.0, but still having the same issue, and tbh I don't feel great difference in smoothness! Just about 20-30 extra MBs in ram that I rarely notice.
I usually do not root my tablets, but I am thinking about rooting my nexus 9. I really enjoy nexus products and I love htc products so I thought the Nexus 9 would be great, but the lag that this tablet has is horrible. I read that it might be hardware issue, since the processor uses denver, but I also heard it might be software related. So I want to ask if the guys who have rooted their tablet experienced less lag or not? If you happen to experience less lag then I would be more inclined to root the tablet. Thanks.

OK maybe I should have been more clear... I want to know if some people who had rooted and flashed a custom aosp room noticed less lag or not... Is the lag driven from a software issue or because of the new architecture of the processor?

Ok, it helps to be clear. Rooting and flashing are two different things. You can flash a rom without rooting. I'm on stock and have not noticed any significant lag. When you have lag check in developer options, process stats. See where your memory is. If it's in critical clear out open tabs.

OK that does make sense and I'll keep an eye on that, but when I checked now, my memory is in normal condition... However, it is on the closer side of critical though, so that might explain that I experience lag when I open a bigger app... I'm not completely used to the way lollipop multitask

Yeah that don't sound right Currently mine lag for 2 seconds the most... I just feel like it should not lag... It does seem however that putting a custom rom helps a little... Just my two sense
I have a lot installed on my nexus 9 but my nexus 6 has the same apps and even more installed. The Nexus 6 is instant and buttery smooth. My nexus 9 also can take a while to screen rotate.
The Nvidia chipset is very driver dependent, therefore software dependent. Read the Anandtech reiew article and it will clarify why there are short pauses/freezes sometimes with the N9.
Let's hope 5.1 fixes this...
you want nasty lag, goto htc's N9 web page.. I've not seen a poorly coded webpage with that type of lag in ages.
I know, its not the lag you are talking about , but I had to say something about it someplace ?

I don't notice lag on my N9, but I just came from using my N7 2012. Its horrible, so my 9 seems supercharged. I do have freeze ups in Chrome occasionally, but that's about it. I must not max out my memory enough.
Wiping the cache seemed to help a little. I'm going to sell my Nexus 9. For a flagship reference there shouldn't be any lag. I'm sticking to Qualcomm chip set for now.
I have never rooted my N9 and got my device in Nov. I'm running the latest 5.01 and started to notice lag creeping in every 30 - 45 seconds (for no apparent reason). It wasn't very noticeable surfing the web or navigating the tablet but became very apparent playing games. Power cycling the device did nothing.. I was hoping the 5.1 update would solve the problem but grew too impatient waiting for it to arrive so I decided to flash the stock 5.01 image onto my device (from google site). All the lag is gone now, games that were previously unplayable due to the lag are now buttery smooth again. Not sure what caused the lag to begin with but stock 5.01 image reflashing solved my problems.

Yeah a few people has mentioned that flashing the stock image helped out quit a bit, but I'm running a rooted version of 5.1 and it's running great... Which I think means it's the memory leak causing the issue, and even though there is still a memory leak on 5.1 it's much better...
Sent from my LG-D850 using XDA Free mobile app
In my case I don't think it was the memory leak issue causing the lag. If that was the case then power cycling the device would have resolved the issue momentarily. But it did not. The lag was consistently present regardless of the numbers of power cycles and clearing of all "recent apps".
I can understand the frustration some have voiced in the forums making it sound like the N9 is plagued with issues. Re-flashing stock 5.01and bringing back my tablet to the same state (reinstalled all apps again) it was in solved my problems. Hopefully the 5.1 OTA fixes whatever lag has been introduced with previous updates.

The lag is getting annoying.
I am frustrated user of Note 8, received it early September 2017, been using without any issues until Oreo update arrived in May 2018.
Once phone was updated i have done factory restore and start clean, i have done same procedure twice as i am having the following issues running phone in high performance mode:
1. The phone used to run smooth in Power Saving Mode, now its sluggish
2. Pretty sure there is greater delay between finger print sensor reading and screen turning on
3. General UI laggy, in performance mode its no longer as snappy as it used to be
4. The edge panel can sometimes slide out but stutter on animation
5. Camera launching from the hard button press, can have delay or stutter to launch too
6. Battery feels like gotten worse
Anyone else can agree?

I disagree. My Exynos N950F has still been smooth since the day I got it out of the box. I only got the base update to Oreo (possibly due to my CSC). My experience has been good so far. My phone has never been sluggish while playing games or multitasking using multi-window or App-Pair (whatever the feature is called in the GraceUI).
I'd suggest you backup, wipe (again), and restore your phone in increments until you find the root cause. I'm willing to bet that your issue is with an app that runs in the background. Are all your installs from the Google Play Store, and not APKs from questionable third parties?

I'd flash latest full stock with Odin using full wipe. Better than factory reset for clearing out persistent issues. Aside from that not sure what else can be suggested. Oreo has been running great here with every OTA.

I suggest downloading the firmware of the version you are currently on if you care about rooting in the future and flash it with Odin. Seems like you're on v3 bootloader based on your post. Go from that direction with testing.
I agree with the battery being worse. For me standby drain is way higher on Oreo. On N I would lose about 5% overnight. Now around 11-15%. Phone is smooth though
Yes I agree oreo is laggy and a battery hog on my at&t note 8. Other then the android version being different I see no visible ui changes vs 7.1.1. Why do they keep changing the bootloader? Dont understand that.
