Yesterday I glanced over to my Samsung Galaxy S3 to see the startup logo (as below) just stuck on my screen. The one that says "Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300".
Here's as much useful info about my phone as I can think of:
I have never tried to root my phone, or do any other modding to it
I bought it second hand from a friend, who says they have not done anything of the sort either. I did a fresh install of what I think was Android 4.3 when I got it
I live in the UK and I think the phone is from the UK too, originally tied to a provider but is now unlocked.
I obviously attempted to reboot the phone. I held down the power button and after quite a few seconds the screen went black, then I let go and instantly the same startup logo reappeared. I tried again, without releasing the power button this time, same result.
I tried plugging in the charger, held down the power button, and it then went to a sort-of charging screen. There was a little grey icon on the battery, appearing as though it was not charging.
It wasn't showing the usual charging animation, rather a different one with a greyed battery icon. Holding down the power button on this screen performed the same as with the original logo screen, it just looped.
Here's what I then tried, in order:
removing the battery for 5, 10, 30 minutes. No luck.
leaving it at the startup screen for 30 minutes. No luck
gently tapping the side of the phone, in case the power button was stuck. No luck.
entering RECOVERY MODE and CLEARING CACHE PARTITION. No luck.
entering RECOVERY MODE and WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET. No luck.
downloaded Kies and connected phone to PC via USB. Kies recognised that the phone was connected but it would stick at the "connecting" screen. I tried multiple USB cables and multiple USB ports, both front and rear of PC. No luck.
I then downloaded Odin and attempted to 'flash' (not good with the terminology, excuse any mistakes I make) my phone using various firmwares I found on the internet. I tried the md5 file both in the PDA and PHONE boxes. I kept downloading "BTU" firmwares(?), read that's what I want somewhere. The file name is "I9300XXUGMK6_I9300OXAGMK6_I9300XXUGMK6_HOME.tar.md5". However I kept encountering various errors, ranging from "there is no PIT partition", to "can't open the serial(com) port". Basically it would always fail.
I tried 5 different versions of Odin - 3.10, 3.9, 3.7, 3.04, 1.85. No luck, same errors.
I then tried uninstalling Kies, ending all processes related to it, and retrying Odin. Still no luck, getting the same serial(com) port error.
I then tried to use a "GT-9300.pit" file that I found online, in the PIT section of Odin. No luck
MY CURRENT SITUATION:
Having tried all of the above, my phone no longer enters recovery mode. When I boot my phone it goes to the following firmware upgrade error screen saying "Firmware upgrade encounteerd an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
It allows me to enter DOWNLOAD MODE, but not RECOVERY MODE. It loops in the same behaviour as previous screens. Even when on charge it shows this screen now.
I have tried my best to include everything I can so I can get more appropriate help. I do not have any experience with phones and I have tried everything I can by myself, hopefully someone here can help!
Long story,if you know what is Teamviewer i can help you. It would take long time to troubleshoot what you did wrong. Best thing would be to start from scratch.

Thank you so much for your offer to help!
I do know what Teamviewer is! I've used it for many years
I also have Skype and a webcam (for showing the phone), so that would be very useful too..
Ok,we don,t need Skype. It's not important for me to see the phone. I will tell you what to prepare, what to download so we can be fast and productive

Hey everybody. I bought a fascinate from CL, which was soft-bricked, thinking I could fix it. Guy told me it froze updating to 2.3. It had been stock the whole time. Phone would not boot at all, no display, only four bottom buttons would light up on touch. No dl mode, recovery, or anything.
Odin somehow would still recognize the phone (comm port turns yellow) but fails during flashing of modem. I tried all stock .tar packages with atlas pit too. I tried to flash superclean with no modem, Odin said success, but phone did not do anything.
Now, I moved on to Heimdall to flash. I successfully flashed stock 2.2. When reboot command was sent, I heard the verizon startup sound, but still nothing on display. I waited a little until the phone vibrated when touchwiz force closed. Then, I locked/unlocked screen with power button and the display came back! Yay, I thought until I saw no internal storage, cannot install app, blah, blah.
Now, every time I turn off the phone, it returns to bricked state. Odin still fails, only Heimdall one click unbrick can successfully restart the phone, but again the display is off until it finishes loading and i can lock/unlock the screen.
Sooo, am I just stuck with no internal storage and cannot ever turn it off or does anyone have another suggestion? Thanks for hanging in there and reading all of this too.
So it seems that the phone powers on into dl mode, maybe? The screen is blank but Odin will see it when I plug it in the computer. This is no key combos or usb, just power button.
It also connects right back to Odin if the flash says success. The phone will reboot (I guess, no display), then Odin beeps and com port added again.
Sorry for double post, just thought that was weird.

follow the steps in section 5 of my guide in general section.
I was using your guide from the beginning. I tried both the Froyo and Gingerbread but Odin fails at the modem.bin every time.
Tried all usb ports, reinstalled drivers, rebooted computer...
The heimdall one click is the only thing that kind of works. Are there any other heimdall packages to try?
Hi, so I have the SGSIII on Verizon and I tried to flash the rooted stock.img, but it failed and now whenever I try to boot up the device, it says."Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
What should I do?
I'm assuming that you installed the drivers and Odin connected correctly to start the flash. Can you still get into download/Odin mode? Turn phone off or battery pull. Hold the volume down, home, and power buttons till the phone turns on and the yellow triangle appears. Hit volume up. Plug your phone back in and see if Odin sees the connection. Then try flashing again. Don't touch the phone till it completely reboots.

I had same issue and it was because the tar file I had downloaded to flash wasn't the complete file. Try downloading it again and then try again with Odin.
All of the sudden, even though I really didn't do anything besides try to go into download/odin mode (which did come up), I rebooted and all was good. I even had root. Whoop! Good for me I guess.
I am also suffering something along those lines with Odin, although just a tad different so I felt it didn't warrant a new thread.
I am attempting to root my Galaxy S3 using Odin, with the stripped down rooted .img
As you can see, when attempting to flash it, I am getting failed multipal times, so I am at a loose for words right now

try a different package. i have not seen that one. there are others known to work. read the stickies. the ones posted there are tried and true.
I have an um-rooted samsung galaxy player 3.6 (running gingerbread 2.3.6) I was browsing an app when suddenly it crashed! the battery was low, so at first I thought to plug it in, but before I did, I noticed that it was rebooting every 4-5 seconds. plugged it in, took out battery, tried putting in recovery (put bat. back in, hold power and both volume buttons) but it vibrates and just goes back into boot loop. it pops up with the samsung logo, stays for 3 or so seconds, screen goes dark, then it does it again.
I have been messing with it. when it starts booting, my computer recognizes it as OMAP3630 which google has told me is the name of the processor. It tries to install drivers but fails due to "umplugged device" when it turns off
Weird! If you have data to recover try using adb logcat to see what's going on. Otherwise reflash with Odin. I have only experienced this problem when using heimdall to flash my us yp-gs1, but it happens right after flashing.
What app were you using when it happened?

a Forum app. It has not been flashed either. it is all stock 2.3.6 gingerbread. if i put the battery in then plug it in (without hitting any power buttons) it goes to a loading circle (that does not move at all) and just stays there. the computer does not recognize it in this state. its only 3 months old, but I have no idea where the recipt is!
weird! im sticking with my answer tho, if you want to fix it then put it in download mode and flash it
if you cant get to download mode then buy a $2 usb jig
Tried it! no luck. got it in download mode. ran odin and It said pass! BUT it only took 3 seconds? and then instead of flashing just samsung then rebooting, it started flashing samsung with a caution symbol under it and rebooting. went to do it again and it says suctom binary current binary:custom. so it seems it worked but did not fix my problem
Did you flash normalboot and factoryfs both?

I had a similar problem with the galaxy player 5.0. Took out my micro sd card from it and somehow that worked. Hasn't gone on any reboot cycle since.
I was gonna try the fs whatever one, but now i cannot get my computer to recognize it! i tried another factory reset and that didnt help. i got it to work once. Guess I will have to keep trying? I got school so I cant do it now (16, junior in High school)
yep you'll need to get to download mode to flash it. like i said before, a $2 usb jig will always do the trick (i loooove mine)
I dont have any problem getting it into download mode, my problem is getting the computer to recognize it. gonna have to try it on a dif computer I guess, which is weird, because I got it to work once, but now it wont. I flashed the normalboot the first time, what did i do wrong? should I have flashed the other (fs or whatever is is) one instead? thanks for the help!
When I'm in a bootloop after heimdall testing I need to flash factoryfs. For you I would say flash both. Try another cable/ try another USB port

I rooted my phone successfully, tweaked a couple roms successfully as well. The last rom I tweaked was I think something to do with init.d. After I tweaked the rom, I restarted my phone and bam... that $H1T stood stuck at the boot animation loop a.k.a BRICKED.
I downloaded odin and some tars, but before that I deleted partition erased in recovery mode holding up and power button. I went to download mode using down and power button. I failed 9 times using odin, and then eventually I got the box screen to display "PASS" with a green color. I restarted the phone and it had a different model lol. However my phone still did not get back to the way its suppose to start up. I tried using new files for ODIN, and everything seemed about right until it said: Wait about 2 minutes, it was the last step I think and I was actually waiting 15 minutes, so I got anxious and unplugged it and restarted my phone and it shows a different model instead of SPH-D710 it shows GT-19100 and goes straight into recovery mode.
All I can do is scroll up and down using volume buttons but I cant hit the (ok button) which is the (power button) to attempt the action I want. I have a boost mobile samsung galaxy S2. Also Odin, Kies and my Computer does not recognize my phone anymore through usb. I tried usb samsung drivers update, and I even tried a bunch of different versions of ODIN including a different computer. My downloads folder is literally packed with a whole bunch of tool aid kits for my phone lol. OH and by the way before I used odin I did end the process of Kies in the task manager so yup. I do not know what else to do, I tried different computers I think I am pretty much PHUCKED over now. Unless someone has another solution.
I do not understand why I cant enter nothing in recovery mode all of sudden, I can only move up or down. I can only go into either recovery mode or download mode. In recovery mode it says:
Deleting Cryption Meta Data
-- Copying media files...
Successfully copied meida files.
# MANUAL MODE #
-- Updating application...
Successfully updated application.
-- Appling Multi-CSC...
Successfully applied multi-CSC.
If it shows I9100 on the boot screen instead of SPH-D710 you've obviously used firmware for the I9100 on your device, and there's a fair possibility you'll be making a trip to a service centre.
Find stock SPH-D710 firmware, flash that with Odin. Where ? No idea, like most people here know almost nothing about this model; try the usual haunts - Samfirmware, AndroidFirmwares.Net, Samsung-updates.com, Google search),.
I have a very exaggerated problem for this device, the first time I gave Stock ROM through Download Mode, it started, I went to lunch, when I came back he had given a (Blocked Writing) error in the middle of the process, now at that moment I know how to solve this problem, but as I did not know, I tried to flash ROM again in Odin, and every time I was locking in aboot.mbn, after several attempts, several different computers, different USB cables ... different tests, now in this exact Odin crashes in Initialization, does not leave there for nothing, leave a long time it says that the device did not respond, I tried to reestablish the PIT that is the Partition Table using Odin, however it hangs anyway in initialization, I researched a lot, I tried Unbrick methods through files on SD Card, tried several Rom Stock and also tried to install a Custom Recovery, however everything fails, after all, in all cases it crashes in initialization, hey sso not only happens in a single System, then I decreed this cell phone as deceased .. the ****ing thing died, I saw in some places that they said that the problem was Hard Brick, that is to say, problem in the motherboard parts, and the solution would be change the motherboard of the entire device, but this is very expensive ...
Sansung Kies is only connecting and after a while he says that the device did not respond, if I turn the phone on, and do nothing, it goes to a Download screen only instead of the green android in the middle, a message appears talking to do Firmware Upgrade using Sansung Kies, and if I hold the buttons to enter the recovery mode, nothing happens and it's the same thing to turn it on normally, and if I hold the Download Mode buttons, it goes into Download Mode normally only in both cases Odin locks in initialization ..
