Hi Guys, I have looked high and low but cannot seem to find a definitive answer so to what to do.
Basically I have a Samsung S3 which about 5 months ago I rooted to enable me to use any network. Basically O2 who I used to have a contract with messed up somehow and on their records they could not find a IMEI number and so couldn't unlock, I was going round in circles and as I was moving abroad I had no other option.
Everything went fine and it is only now that I would like to update the OS to its latest version that when I go to the settings and update it says something about having a modified firmware (I think, another story altogether but I now broke the screen and so waiting for a replacement to fix it).
My questions are:
Will I ever be able to update normally via the settings menu again?
What is the latest stable Android update that I could use? KitKat?
Where is the best place to source the most recent Android distributions?
Basically I am just looking for a bit of advice on how to go about keeping my phone up to date with the latest features. I am not really interested in adding hacked functionality etc at this point.
Thanks
If you unlocked your phone using the 'free' methods then updating to the latest rom will return the network lock or corrupt your efs folder, depending on how the unlock was achieved.
You can't use ota updates as you've modified your phone.
Sammobile is where you obtain the latest rom.
Also, questions go the q&a forum and all the above information is posted many times.
Sorry for the wrong forum post.
So to be clear if I want to update I need to go to manually update the phone. Is this via kies or will it be more complex as my phone is now rooted / modded.?

As said, you wont get any updates via OTA if your phone is rooted,
Go to Sammobile.com, find the latest UK / Europe (BTU) generic rom it will be the version ending MJ9.
Download Odin and Guide here
Flash the rom using Odin, doing this will remove root access, once you have installed the rom, enter recovery mode and clear Cache / Dalvik Cache then factory reset (be aware this will wipe your phone and internal storage so copy any files to your PC first)
Boot the phone and set it up, then go to software updates on your phone and update the MJ9 version to MK6,
Now your phone will be fully stock and get OTA updates in the future plus you will have the generic UK and Europe firmware version (BTU) Android 4.3.
Thank you so much, that is a nice clear guide
My last question is if people think it's good to update to 4.3 now? I read the UK was having issues with it?

No wait for the next full build .
Read the faqs and guides as you wait .
Had a good read about, thanks for that.
Does anyone know or hazard a guess when next official jellybean release may be? Do they run on development cycles, or is this more an advice patch?
Any ideas on if update coming soon that is good idea to flash with?
Also if I install a new ROM I know everything is wiped, is there a way I can back up all my whatsapp convocations etc? Or will I need to install all the apps a fresh? Ie can I restore the phone as is now or will it be a case of each app installed from scratch?
Thanks so much for help so far, think I will update today.

Go to the sammmobile link in the previous post I suggested to you and download the UK (BTU) MK6 firmware, there is nothing wrong with that version, if you are already on a stock rom just flash this no need to do any factory resets, wipes.etc

If you are on a stock rom then flash the rom mentioned above it will not affect any of your apps they will still work the same unless you have root dependant app but then simply root your phone again using CF-Auto Root in my signature.
The times you have problems is when you have custom roms then going to a different custom rom or back to a stock rom, in these cases you need to do a full wipe and factory reset so you loose all data unless you have back it up.

Factory reset will not wipe the internal sd card. So if u back up whatsapp conversations without ext sd card, factory reset will not wipe it.

Thanks for that, I am downloading that ROM now.
When you say stock ROM, I did not go to a custom one but I did root my phone to allow it to be region free. I still get the O2 splash screen etc, so is it safe to say it is still stock and I can simply flash the new ROM without a factory reset?

Yes, my phone was Stock o2 when I got it in May 2012, first thing I did was flash the Generic BTU firmware to get rid on o2 stuff, I have never had to do a Factory reset nor wipe Cache, Dalvik Cache on my phone, it has always been rooted and apart for the MJ9 issues that Samsung had late last year it has worked fine, no lag, no random reboots, no freezing.
If you don't root you will get OTA updates, if you root you wont but you can still use Kies or Sammobile to update to any latest version releases, the factory reset will wipe pictures, music and your app data from your internal storage so if you back them up to your PC before a Factory reset you can replace them afterwards, but if you have not had any custom roms on your phone the need for a factory reset would be highly unlikely.
That's great, all went well today with the MK6 update listed above. I now see there is a MK7 update for jellybean from Israel. Worth going to this?

Choice on that is yours really.
Just because there is a higher number version doesn’t mean its an update from what you have unless it is based on the same version (eg BTU) if you have BTU MK6 and there was a BTU MK7 then that is an upgrade.
Where Isreal has MK7, India has ML4 this generally relates to how long and how many attempts they have in getting that country specific version ready for release, not an upgraded version of MK6.
You need to ensure that the rom you do install has multi CSC’s otherwise you could end up with no network signal or data.
I just heard about the impending release of 5.0.1 for the verizon s4.
I rooted my friends s4 a few months ago, and unfortunately, he just has not found it to help him much. I am relatively sure he would rather have lollipop.
So my question is this
How do I unroot his phone (on the latest NK1 firmware) without losing any data. He really wants to keep all his stuff exactly the way it is.
Thank you!
SuperSu has a unroot function, but it MIGHT brick the phone. Best thing to do is get the NO WIPE TARS for NK1 and use Odin..

Could you give me link on a tutorial for that or something? (no wipe tars didn't give me anything relevant on google)
Thanks!
It's not just unrooting. He will need to have all the stock apps, and if he changed any stock files, they will need change back. Nest bet is to use Odin and reflash the stock ROM.

He hasn't done any of that. The most he has done is installed Xposed, and he didn't find it compelling. Can the rom be reflashed without erasing the data? He is going to be real mad at me is I have to reset his phone to get him 5.0.
Hi Guys. Has anyone tried to downgrade their 5.0.2 to 4.4.4? I'm not too happy with Lollipop -- I prefer the darker UI of Kitkat, I also get less battery and some lags in Lollipop.
I've been seeing tutorials for S5 devices in downgrading to 4.4.4 using Direct Flash of Odin. Do you think this is safe? I'm concerned that it may brick the device since it may trigger Knox and other factors such as baseband, etc.
Please let me know your process if you have successfully done a downgrade using Alpha Carrier device. (I have an 850L)
Thank you in advance.
I have already done this twice but at 850f. Full wipe before and after flashing. Everything was ok without any problems (knox etc). Remember backing up!
Thanks!

Nope, I flashed it thru twrp its a custom rom actually
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-alpha/development/rom-spacex-rom-stable-t2986310
Debloated no korean apps, no Korean language.
I just follow my instict and it works
Before I have an experience in flashing and converting korean to international rom from LG Optimus G and fortunately they almost the same.
As long as you have twrp recovery and back ups and still can boot up to download mode don't afraid to experiment, besides there'a Odin if your phone doesn't boot up
Alpha International Nicer on Kitkat with Dark Menus etc
suspected with Alpha 850M that upgrading to Lollipop would not be much of an upgrade- I like my dark menus and smooth performance.
I Android L improved Camera and enabled VoLTE ( once rumored probably not possible because Specific Carrier Software is still needed for VoLTE) would possibly make it worthwhile but Alpha was designed around 4.4 so performance less likely to be buggy IMO on Kitkat.
Also Samsung has a rule it seems that nothing beats the S series except the Note Series- so they intentionally dumbed down the S5 Sensor to 12 Megapixels and stuck it in Alpha.
With the Note 4 Camera and a slightly thicker design with 2600 Mah Battery and SD support- Alpha could have been a big international hit/ popular phone IMO.

Reflash with official stock rom from sammobile thru odin
bricked sm-a500fu after downgrade to KK
I had rooted my 4.4.4 with kingroot, changed to SuperSU with supersume and unrooted with SuperSU. Then Iwent back to stock (all official no Knox) with Odin (4.4.4 (A500FUXXU1AOB4_A500FUATO1AOB1_A500FUXXU1AOB4_HOME.tar.md5).
Then I went from stock to 5.0.2 (A500FUXXU1BOE6_A500FUATO1BOE1_A500FUXXU1BOE6_HOME.tar.md5) with Odin.
Actually after updating from 4.4.4 to 5.0.2 (with odin) the phone converted a lot of apps during startup - Did this also take minutes for you guys ?
All fine and phone quite fast, but no chance to root with Kingroot.
So I wanted back to 4.4.4 I used Odin again and flashed the 4.4.4 as written above. And then: BRICK. Please tell me and others what I possibly did wrong:

You need to reformat via recovery.
Off your phone then press volume up + home button + power button to enter recovery.
Flashing thru odin wont format your data and thats the culprit those data from lollipop aren't compatible with kitkat

I was on stock LL ... I think stock recovery can only wipe data/factory ... does this reformat as well and if so, wouldnt it reformat it the way LL needs it to be (it doesnt know about my wish to odin KK afterwards
I thought this could only be done by custom recovery or a PIT in Odin ???

Based on my experience downgrading from 5.0.2 to kitkat via odin without factory reset will cause boot loop, the only solution was to wipe data factory reset thru stock recovery.
I manage to root my galaxy alpha 5.0.2 via CF-auto root + kingroot.
Kingroot will serves as your superSU because the SU installed by cf-auto root wont run or give root access. Then install twrp recovery.
In twrp recovery we can wipe data, system, without wiping internal storage which contains our files.
Then after wiping.... reboot to download mode or reboot to switch off in twrp then enter download mode manually.
Then downgrade to kitkat, it wont cause boot loop because I already wiped the data from twrp.
Only downgrading from a different OS version needs factory reset.
Any same Kitkat but with different builds won't cause boot loop even downgrading or upgrading thru odin without the need of wiping data.
Hello, can anyone write down step-by-step how to downgrade to KitKat? I've just bought my Alpha and it came with Lollipop. I have a valid warranty, so I don't want to loose it.
Oh, and I don't have a Windows PC, so I think Odin isn't a solution in my case.

Hurry up and wait
Any official word on if someone is actively working on trying to get root working?
.Root 5.1.1 T- mob S5???
[I would be pretty pleased if someone could help us out with thisQUOTE=karneychen;61618862]Is it possible for root on Samsung S5 T-mobile?[/QUOTE]
I'm going to give it another month and if no root method is out for 5.1.1, gonna have to revert to 5.0 since I can't get the debloater for OF6 to work. The forum here seems so inactive, makes me wonder if anyone is even working on a root method.
Is that even possible? How would you be able to downgrade without root? If there's a way, please let me know. 5.1.1 has completely trashed my phone. I wanna root so bad so I can flash a new rom. Make my phone usable again. I don't wanna update to get a new phone. Root would be a life saver or at least down grading to root. Please help.

When I got my phone it was running 4.4.2 and installed TWRP... used that to do an advanced wipe of my phone to include Dalvik, System, Data, Internal Storage and Cache and installed a downloaded copy of 5.1.1 from Sammobile. Not sure why I couldn't do the same thing and then install 5.0.

I don't want to say for sure it's 100% possible as I am no expert and haven't done my research. I know some OS's don't allow for downgrading and not sure if this is one of them. I just made an assumption that if advance wipe takes out the entire OS... then why wouldn't it be possible. I could be wrong though and haven't tried yet... wanted to wait a month and see if there is any progress on root for 5.1.1. If you find out anything let me know if you don't mind.. or if someone else with more experience in these matters could comment, that would be helpful.
You can downgrade via odin without tripping knox. I downgraded my wifes phone from 5.0 to 4.4.2 a while back.

Yea but that was 5.0 not 5.1.1 which might be different. I read an article a little while ago that mentioned that you might soft brick your phone if you attempt to downgrade 5.1.1... something to do with the bootloader. Waiting on an expert to chime in...

I was on 5.1.1, didnt like it and did odin back to 5.0 with no issues.
Same problem with OTA 5.1.1
Same problem with Samsung s5 T Mobile after the upgrade. SOOOOOO Lagggggy. T Mobile support told me to remove SD card, that seems to work, but I need the sd card... so I format it and put it back again and guess what.... it is lagy again. I also reset twice the phone and the same thing... So I think we are stuck, I can not root it, can not downgrade, can not use the phone!
Is there even a way to revert to 5.0
Ill say maybe a month since 5.1.1 was realesed. Testing some rooting mmethods myself so ill get back to yu all if I found a way
Should have waited for a dev to get hold of it, never do a ota. I have never took an ota yet, not planning to either.

have also twp recovery? for 5.1.1
I did brick my SM-G900T trying to go from 5.1.1 to 5.0. I read that Samsung added "protection" to 5.1.1 to prevent reverting & possibly rooting (not sure about that). I took the phone to a repair shop - it now has 5.0 and the OTA 5.1.1 is trying to download again.... I'm going to attempt to root 5.0. As I am new to rooting, really don't know what I'm doing & and am relying on internet posts, wish me luck!
Hello,
I'd like to upgrade to something more current than my 4.3 JB. Only, I'm concerned with losing my apps data and phone data. I used Odin one click root with no data loss. Now I'm wondering how the heck do I upgrade. Do I have to unroot to a stock mj4 first, then upgrade either ota or by myself to the highest version or since I'm rooted and running on twrp, can I upgrade with the most current or at least NC5 4.4? All the while, not having to reinstall my apps like before or any data loss?
My applogies ahead of time on not knowing the correct terms or procedures on what direction is the correct one to take in steps.
Thanks.
First you need to consider if you upgrade to NC5 or higher that installs Knox. Second has your trip counter been tripped to 1x0 ? You can root NC5 with Towel root and not trip Knox counter. But if upgrade higher than NC5 there is nothing that you root with that will not trip Knox counter. To save your data and apps you can attempt a "dirty flash" . This is done by finding a flash able version of NC5 in a zip file that you place on your sd card flash through twrp recovery, while in recovery you wipe caches and system, but not data.
However the odds of something being corrupted are high. The best way is to save all your data to your desktop and install back on the device after you are done flashing. Just click on rom flashing basics in my signature all info and links you need are there. Or you can find it on page 3 in General section.
I've got knox on 4.3.. and it's tripped any how. I don't care about the warranty, it's two years old. Hasn't got any left. hahahah. I'm more concerned with having to redo all the settings, my apps, work apps detailed things I really don't want to reset if I can help it (more so I can't remember all of it). I'm not sure how they did it before under the "one click no data loss" root. Wish there was a concise method, centralized that specifially says, hey if you used this, and want to do it like this, this and this, to save date, you do this and presto. hahah.
To be honest, I'm not sure what direction to take to even begin with. I'm rooted and what's the best way to update from there. I read your page, but it doesn't tell me what to do from being already rooted standpoint. Also it starts off as if you're on 4.4.4. I'm still on 4.3 MJ4. lol
Real quick, you mentioned to wipe the cache and system but not data. For obvious reasons, but could you explain what the three portions contain, reason being so I can wrap my mind around it to better understand why this, but not that.
Thank you for your quick response. Hope I can do this today if I'm lucky to get it right.
Ok so have a device that is rooted running mj4. To upgrade to 4.4.4 NC5 you need to find a copy of NC5 thats already rooted and in a flashable zip file. Than copy and paste the zip file to your sd card, and boot into your recovery. Now wipe cache, dalvik-cache, and system but do not wipe the data. This will install the new OS and keep your device rooted and save your data. This is commonly known as a dirty flash, most of the time it works. But sometimes it doesn't hence the term dirty flash.
The cache is a log of the OS running if there is an error or crash developers can review it and see what happened and fix it.
A dalvik-cache is data from your apps as they are loaded into the OS when they are opened or started up. The dalvik-cache stores this start up data that is repeated every time the application starts. Then uses it to make the app start up or open faster.

That one is flashable with Odin only. It would work but it would take you back to bone stock NC5 with no root and you would lose all your data. Think of it as buying a new phone and starting from scratch. I found one to but the download link is broken. Most of the guys here have updated to OC5 5.1 of course l'm still running my 4.4.4 NK4 deodexed debloated rom it's smooth and bulletproof.

ah, gotcha. I read also about battery life kind of sucking... How's yours running? Is there any benefit to updating higher? And, say I did 4.4.4, if I wanted to go up, would it be the same way, find a rooted flashable version and boot recovery?
Thank you for your help, really do appreciate when someone takes the time to help someone less knowledgeable.
