I was trying to root my galaxy y but after I flashed cwm 6.0.5.3, when I tried to flash the root package, it failed so when I tried to reboot but it says I'm missing root permission and boots back into cwm. What do I do?!

If you don't have a nandroid backup, then you will need to reflash the stock firmware via Odin and start over.
I didn't make a nandroid backup but it doesn't bother me much about losing data. I tried using Odin but I can't seem to understand how to use it.

There are a zillion guides around here, YouTube, etc on how it works. It's basically the same for almost any Samsung.
Download the appropriate firmware for your phone / carrier / region
Install drivers, if needed
Open Odin as Admin
Plug phone in Download Mode to PC
Odin should register phone as COM:XX where XX could be any numbers
Load the firmware in the PDA or AP slot, depending on which Odin version being used
After file is checked, hit Start
Wait patiently
Phone should reboot on it's own
If phone bootloops after successful flash, then reboot to the stock recovery and perform a factory data reset

Hi all,
I've been having a few issues with my S2 (Randomly resetting, freezing, etc) - so I decided to do a factory reset - but it hasn't worked.
When I turn my phone on, it wont go past the galaxy logo. I've tried holding down VOLUME UP, POWER, and HOME - but it doesn't boot it into recovery mode.
I've downloaded odin (the phone is rooted) and was told to download a new ROM and then use the PDA button on odin. But the only file type it expects is MD5, tar and SMD. Whenever I download a ROM, I just get a ZIP?
I'm probably being stupid. Could someone point me in the right direction? I don't care if I lose data, I just want the phone working.

What ROM do you want to flash?
If it's a stock ROM, then extract the zip file and flash the contained tar/md5 file with Odin.
If it is a custom ROM and only provided as CWM-flashable zip file, then use a stock ROM to flash first and flash the custom ROM afterwards, when everything works again.
Here you can get the latest stock ROMs => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487, or pre-rooted stock ROMs from here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1608071, or use Check Fus Downloader from here => http://fus.nanzen.se/ to check for the latest officiallly released firmware versions for your phone in your region and download it directly from Samsung servers.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I don't care which ROM I use - As long as I get the phone working again. I did download 7comp ROM but I couldn't find any .tar files?
I also converted the ZIP to a TAR but odin isn't picking it up ?!
OK - I've downloaded and installed the latest stock ROM you posted.
It seems to have installed, but doesn't go past the splash screen which says samsung galaxy Sii
Any ideas?
[EDIT] - Phone fixed. I was able to load it into recovery mode and cleared cache. woo
Well done ...now try to go on recovery mode ...if should be able to go....do full wipe...then clear delvik cache...then advance- fix permission ..
Then reboot system ....you are done...
Don't forget to say thanks..

Attempted to root the phone but it didn't work.
I followed a set of instructions, and was asked to wait for the phone to reboot. It now has the "!" rooted icon but won't go past the rooted screen.
System restore and clearing cache doesn't set it back to factory default. Any ideas?

Sorry for late reply. I followed a video on youtube showing you how to root the phone. It looked succesfull as the "!" did appear, but it wouldn't go past that.
So I rolled it back using the original ROM and have given up on rooting it. It's a shame as I really liked Jelly Bean

to root ur phone, just dwnld the .tar file of Siyah v4.1.5 fro the link below, then put ur phone into Dwnld mode and connect to ODIN in ur PC and flash by putting the siyah kernel file(.tar) in PDA section, ur phone will be rooted
http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2012/09/08/siyahkernel-s2-v4-1/
PS- do see that u dwnld the file meant to flash by ODIN ie Download tar (for Odin)
Just flash a siyah v.4 rooted kernel through odin.
i just rooted for the 1st time with cwm then i was able to switch it to twrp. then i made a backup, then installed CM10. but i failed badly...i never deleted the 2 caches.
nor did i wipe it / reset it, for fear i would lose all my settings/apps/contacts/etc... i know i have the backup but i still didn't think it was necessary.
can anyone tell me where i go from here?
i tried holding down all 3 buttons, it just vibrates, then reboots and starts the loop again. i went into recovery mode with vol down & power buttons. since i don't have a tar file for twrp, i had to go with the tar file from odin. then it rebooted but it went back to the loop.
i just pulled the battery out and let it sit for a minute. turned it on and it is still CM10 looping.
thanks in advance for any advice!

You can try using odin and flashing the twrp tar file and you can find that here.
or you can use kies to do an emergency firmware update. It will blitz everything on your phone (except your external memory) and reinstall android version 4.1.2. Then you can root properly and know nothing is botched up.
To update to latest firmware (from any rom even rooted)
1. On a PC open http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/
2. Click Download for windows
3. Install Kies
4. Open Kies
5. Write down serial number of phone device (it's under battery)
6. Plug in phone to PC and power up phone while HOLDING volume down
7. Once you see the download screen on phone press volume up
8. On PC in Kies click "tools - Firmware Upgrade and Initialization"
9. Type in SGH-I717 (all caps)
10. Type in serial number
11. Follow directions
12. Once phone reboots you will have the latest OFFICIAL AT&T firmware (JB 4.1.2 as of 6-1-2013)
13. Perform a factory data reset before proceeding (it helps it run smoother)
14. Type in google info and enjoy!
To root the stock 4.1.2 rom
1. Use Odin 1.85 in Admin Mode for Windows users.
2. Install TWRP 2.5 via PDA settings.
3. Reboot phone into Recovery.
4. Install SuperSU via the Zip.
5. Reboot phone and Presto!
Your now on the latest software for the i717, rooted, and have twrp recovery installed. Enjoy or flash any rom of your choice!

I see more than 2 options for downloads in twrp. The one you should be using with odin is this one http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/sgh-i717/openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-quincyatt.img.tar
don't unzip, open, or do anything with it. Just place it in the PDA section of odin and hit start.
If that fails use kies.
that file i cant find on the link, but thanks 440!!! Odin would get stuck at "Setup connection," so it wasn't working. tried it again and it said it did work, "passed," but still no changes from tthe CM10 loop.
i was desperate not to use Kies and lose everything. so i started messing around with different buttons. i pressed and held both volume buttons and power button again...it powered off and nothing. tried it again and this time i saw the teamwin logo!! i was able to then click restore on the Gnote's screen and now it is restoring my twrp back up from yesterday. i guess that last attempt on Odin paid off.
just rebooted it and voila, all is perfect again.
thanks for your quick assistance 440!!! :good::good::good:
so now if i try CM10 again, when i "wipe" it (i think that is the wording) will that wipe all my txt's, call history, photos, contacts, S memo's, etc...???

Before you wipe make sure to do a complete back up, download sms backup or super backup to back up contacts, texts etc... Download app2zip or Titanium to back up your apps.
Here's the process I go through each time. Each time you will lose everything but is safer and have a better chance of not failing:
In TWRP
Factory reset
Wipe System
Wipe cache and dalvik cache
Install your rom and the gapps
Wipe cache and dalvik again
reboot and let the phone sit for about 10mins, then reboot again and all should be good.
Once phone is up and running, if you did app2zip to back up your apps, you have to go back into recovery and flash that zip and install the backups from sms backup or super backup for your contacts, texts etc....
Hope that helped some.
READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS.
DON'T FORGET TO BACKUP YOUR EFS FILES AND NANDROID BACKUP

You could try the zip in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-2-6-3-0-touch-recovery-t1943592/post50943534
Then you could just flash that using CWM. And yes it does affect things when you flash it as it changes your recovery from CWM to TWRP which is more touch screen based, easier to use as well as being a lot more powerful than a basic CWM. Having changed you may find TWRP doesn't find your previous backups. This is usually as both of those recoveries tend to save them in different places and it's just looking in the wrong place for the files. You can either change the settings to a CWM style restore or just run a new backup through TWRP and delete the old CWM one.

Guys, everytime I flash twrp using ODIN it goes down as a success. And it reboots the phone. But then I shut down the phone and reboot to recovery its once again the default Samsung Recovery. The phone is not rooted. How do I prevent the original recovery from overwriting the TWRP recovery?

Just use the TWRP Manager from the Play Store. Root the phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33305792&postcount=3 and install the manager.
@lurker316: forget TWRP-manager. The only extra step, you need, is a factory reset. So backup all your data before. To avoid reboot after flashing TWRP, either uncheck reboot in Odin or pull out battery after succeeded flash.

Did you flash the full firmware via ODIN? You can download from here, look for the file that belongs to your region.
Otherwise, if you don't want to re-flash firmware, search for a compatible bootloader and flash it in ODIN.
I am using a gt i8552 Samsung galaxy grand Quattro , rooted with kingo root.
somewhere in an article I read supersu is better
so I tried installing supersu me pro
. But It showed I was not rooted with king/kingo root. so
I flashed supersu.zip from cwm the recovery I used.
anyway after some time it showed a message update binary
there were 2 options 1) normal.........2)cwm/twrp
obviously I chose normal .
it said installation failed
. I chose cwm recovery fro that moment on whenever I chose reboot system now it would reboot to cwm.
then after trying some options like shutdown(wouldn't work even if I waited 2hours )
reboot to bootloader(the only place else I could go other than cwm)
I started surfing the internet . I got confused in a bootloop and recovery loop . I also tried flashing fixpermissions.zip
I tried factory resed wiped cache partition dalvik chache formatted /cache istalled a custom rom(cosmic rom for gti8552)
. thinking that it is a bootloop :silly: . then I understood and I flashed stock recovery( http://d-h.st/hcA ) <<<<<<biggest mistake of me all
now I am in a boot loop I cannot access bootloader nor recovery . all I can see is samsung
update > when Samsung appered I pulled out the battery put it again I saw galaxy grand quatrro  I got into stock recovery somehow and rebooted but the it didn't even show Samsung
update> I am able to access stock recovery anything I can do
Thanks to pbhogal98
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
that problem was solved but........ Now I am in one more problem..........
I want to install custom ROM (cosmic rom)
But I cannot as of I cannot enter the recovery I have flashed twrp. Anything new was the triangle with ! Below Samsung but I could not enter recovery
...........
So I also tried cwm , I could not enter that also..
So I need another way to install custom ROM or way to fix that recovery
I would really love some advice plz
go to sammobile (google it)
download firmware and odin
go to download mode and flash firmware by odin
thx but.....

see the problem is as told in description I factory reset resulting in the usb debugging is not checked so I can not use odin as it does not add the device.
I can now access stock recovery . any help
can I use adb to istall the firmware.if so then how
No need
Just go to download mode and flash firmware using odin. There is no system to debug in download mode , so you don't need to enable debugging .
Using AP ? When I so connect it Odin does not show added any idea why then??

Firmware was successful installed buddy I have a new problem see above
You should try usb jig if its works it might take you to download mode. And if you got stuck in cwm recovery loop just flash cwm again and make sure that you select auto reboot.
