Hi all,
I've had my Z2 for a while now and I love it. However I have ran into a problem with what seems to be with the headphone jack itself. I thought it was my headphones at first as my right earbud stopped working (using the official Sony headphones here). But if I put some pressure a certain way on the jack when it's plugged in, they work. So straight away I thought a dodgy connection inside the jack but after putting the headphones into my pc, both headphones work fine. So it must be the headphone port.
Is there any quick fix for this? Maybe there is a build up of dust/crumbs or god knows what down the port itself and by getting rid of whatever is down there may fix the issue? If so what can I use to clean it?!
Sorry if this has already been said a million times. Not sure if this is a common thing or not. I'd rather not get it repaired if I can help it. But I love my music!!
Cheers in advance
First I would try to clean the sticks that are inside the phone. Then can get dirty after you've put your phone in the water.
If this won't work you may try to move the metal connectors a bit (with a screwdriver) , but be very very careful.

Thanks. Will give that a go. Best apparatus to clean the inside of the port?
Well. That's hard to say. I've seen some professional videos how people clean those ones, however I just used a screwdriver because the green thing was just at the top of the headphone just and I could reach it easily.
Maybe you could try to put some material (with alcohol) on a screwdriver and clean it that way.

I had that same problem too.. I used an earbud and slowly removed the cotton a little at a time until it was a snug fit inside the port.. then I put alcohol on the bud and rubbed it around inside the port with a bit of pressure.. it's been a couple of weeks and haven't had that problem again. :good:

Awesome will give that a go. You had more initiative than me cutting the cotton bud to fit. I didn't think of that when I tried and gave up after realising a cotton bud wouldn't fit. lol.

I have had my tablet for a few days now, and when I first got it all the port covers fit really tight. Over the course of normal tablet use, I've noticed that the headphone jack cover does not sit flush with the tablet anymore. I have not used the headphone jack, so I don't know why it would have an issue.
It appears that the jack is being plugged properly, but I am wondering about the water resistance in this case. There seems to be a lot of daylight between the plug and the edge of the tablet. I really wanted to do an immersion test but I am hesitant now.
Has anyone had a similar problem? Do you think it would still work under water? I have the accidental damage policy in case it does fail, but I thought I'd check on the issue before getting it wet.
That is completely no longer waterproof.
Try fitting the flap from the corner that is lifted up first and then the other side.
loose cover
Mine is doing the same thing I don't use headphone either so no idea why it is not fitting any longer. I am either returning it or removing the cover as the waterproof feature is not too important to me.
Thanks for making me completely paranoid about my headphone jack cover -.-

Cover woes
I was very surprised and annoyed by this as the rest of the fit and finish is so good on the tablet. I have a Toshiba Thrive with port covers but they snap in well and don't bulge. I also have an IPAD 3 but am using the Sony only since getting it. I might exchange it since it was an Amazon purchase.
same here
i don't use the headset jack port but the flops are not that tight..
i have the same problem does anyone have his cover sitting tight like the one on the usb port?
if yes i will send it back to sony, if not they messed up.
sometimes mine fits good for a few minutes and than comes out slowly.
I wonder if certain models of the tablet have that problem. My cover is fine. Model is 13W21, 16 GB WiFi.

Common Issue
This issue is cropping up on the sony site also.
talk.sonymobile.com/thread/140727
A first device that I had (went back because of yellowish display) also had the loose headphone cover.
My current device is fine.
Similar problem just with Xperia Z smartphone
I have the same problem with my Xperia Z smartphone. While the headphone jack cover sits flush, it has a tendency to pop out leaving it open completely. This can happen if the phone is lying stationary and not in use. It must just be that the rubber seal is too tight in the cavity and works its way out slowly.

Thanks. I managed to get it to stick on a bit better by accident. I let my son actually use the headphone jack and when I reattached the cover it stayed in a little better. It is still not as tight as I'd like, but it is better.

I have two - one white, one black, both 32GB. The white one has a much tighter headphone jack cover.
So, I was never a believer when I heard of people cleaning the lint out of their headphone jacks and getting them to work again.
That is, until I found a quick and easy solution to fix it. I've read of people using compressed air, paper clips and electric parts cleaners. So I had some duct tape handy and an idea popped into my head. I took a small strip of tape and twirled it into a small enough stick shape, inserted it into the jack and turned it and pulled it out. I did this several times removing a tiny amount of lint each time. The amount of lint that I pulled out was so small that I didn't think it was going to make a difference. Then I plugged in my headphones and, bam, they worked like new!
As a side note, the jack on my phone is loose and wiggly, so naturally I thought that maybe the connections inside the phone were loose and I was going to have take the phone apart to try and fix it. My headphones would connect and disconnect whenever I would wiggle or even touch my headphone jack and it gradually got worse. Then one day it stopped working altogether.
This is not some gimmick. Give it a try. And never insert anything metal or sharp into the jack. You could damage the contacts.

I'm a diehard lurker, but I have to bump this. Just fixed the exact same issue on a heavily abused Razr Maxx that I'd received from a friend, after months of dealing without headphones.
If you shine a light into the headphone jack and can't see the contacts at the very bottom, it's definitely lint that's keeping the jack from working. Personally, I had to use a paperclip to loosen it up a bit, but I'm pretty sure mine was a special case. Don't attempt with anything metal/sharp unless you have a light touch, and the tape on its own isn't helping.
I just tried this method on my Xperia Sola and it worked , I just reverse wrapped a duct tape on a piece of tooth pick so that the sticky part is outside and I entered it through the hole and turned it and pulled it out multiple times till all the Lint(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lint) were gone.
It cleaned the inner part and now it is working like new.
Simple but effective fix!
I was about to send my Xperia Z1 Compact for repair for this very reason, but I stumbled across this post. Thanks so much! Saved me a lot of hassle and embarrassment. A big ball of fluff came out of the headphone jack and now the sound is great. Cheers!
tahsnks for the idea, i finally used a standar pin with electrical tape around it and worked great!
Never had a problem with my DX2, but used this with both my Droid 3, and Droid 4
Problem solved
I was about to throw my nexus 5 out the window because of the issue with the headphones and i didnt want to i already had thrown out a previous cellphone because of this. I just turned off the phone ( paranoid paper clip or something could make contact with something and mess it up. And started to slowly pick and poke away. The amount of lint I pulled out was unbelievable! I didn't stop until i saw a shiny bottom. Now it's works perfectly fine . someone should invent something to either prevent this or an item to clean it. Just saying. Thanks!
Wooh! a big as$ thank you man! the way you worded your post was the only thing that made me give this charm a try. Now I'm the lucky owner of TWO working headphones haha
Mine does not have lint.I have cleaned it. But still it does not produce sound when I plug the earphone. I have to hold the earphone tightly to connect fully with the audio jack. Can you help me guys?
I tried this and I was able to clean out some lint, it helped some, but I still have to push it one way to get sound
Anyone else having physical problems with their Z2?
As of a few weeks ago, I've started noticing that the top right corner of the back panel of my Z2 popping up slightly (like 2mm to 3mm) several times a day and I would have to press it back down. The cover on the USB/SIM area will also mysteriously be open sometimes when I fish the phone out of my pocket even though it does still feel quite firmly closed once I put the cover back in place.
I went down to my local Sony service centre and they said that they will rectify the issues for me and might replace the "loose" flap too (also told me to avoid water since it's not waterproof with the back like that) - but it would take 7 working days and that I should call their helpline to check if there was any issue for me sending my set in as it has an unlocked BL.
Seems like the original Z had the same problem with the back cover - http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/08/0...ose-back-panels-water-resistance-compromised/ and the loose flaps issue isn't new either (but the rubber seals on mine look perfect).
Flash a stock kernel and relock your bootloader, few people actualy check these days for DRM keys however they do check rarely for your bootloader status
And your physical problems are totaly abnormal so try very hard to get a replacement

for the flap problem, easy easy fix. Get some silicone grease at your hardware store or wherever. Take a lil and moisturise the flaps' rubber, works like a charm. Seems like the seal just dries out.

I just tried it and it seems to make the flap come loose more easily. Looking at the flap, it seems to pop open because of insufficient friction between the seals and the socket for the flap...

I just applied this - http://www.wd40specialist.com/products/silicone-lubricant/) - thinly using a q-tip. No worries. Wasn't too expensive and it could be closed again once I cleaned it off. Tried a slightest touch of hair gel (I was desperate...LOL) and that didn't work too well either.
I guess I'll just try to relock the BL and feign ignorance and send it in for "hardware faults" even though the bored sounding helpdesk lady on the phone said that the warranty is voided.

Genuinely quite disappointed with the niggling faults that the phone has. Random freezes and self-reboots and WIFI issues on my Z2 and my dad's Z1 is making me lose confidence in Sony to deliver a solid all-round device. It's a really beautiful phone with a wonderful camera but compared to build quality and software stability my previous HTC M7 (converted to a GPE ROM) which was essentially bulletproof and could have months and months of uptime without a reboot...ugh.

For me, the flaps are good, and the back panel on the edges doesn't seem to pop up or to be misaligned with the edge, but on a light press on a few places it feels like the back panel is loose, and you can hear a small "tactile" feedback when pressed.
Should i get it checked or is it just a little hollow on these few places? For me that's the spot a little to the left and bottom of the SONY logo on the back, in height of the volume rocker.

I kinda semi-fixed the loose flaps by cleaning off the accumulated dust around the edges of the seal and the covered area...doesn't seem to fall out as often now.

I've received my new USB flap and the issue is fixed, the new flap is not loose. It was not due to the phone body as I feared but a premature wear of the flap...
Anyway, I don't recommend to open the flap but in exceptional circumstances. Transferring files wireless and charging phone with magnetic port should be the rule and recommended by Sony.

To be honest, it's just the hassle of having to wait a week (and having to go back to my HTC M7) or so for them to get it fixed. Plus my set might not be accepted by them as the BL is unlocked (towelroot came too late for me unfortunately )
I do intend to send it in for repairs (also dinged the flap a little, might as well get that swapped out too) some time soon as the loose back is really REALLY bugging me.
My god I have the same problem. Everytime I pull it out of my pocket the flap is out. Damn this phone was perfect . I cleaned soo ****ing well and the USB flap stays in more time but its still poping out.
Hi, my usb flap opens itself no matter if my Phone is in my pocket or on a surface, just get loose itself.
The thing is: if i buy The flaps for replacement Will still The usb flap getting loose? And being waterproof aswell? Thanks
My question is, did you try cleaning dust under flap?

Yup, i tried that tough. but no sucess with it so far.
Do you think if i buy new flaps will still getting loose?
I found that properly cleaning it
Like even a single dust spec causes problems
after pushing down on the flap for a bit so it sits firmly in place
If not the flaps are easily replaceable and cheap

i have knowledge about dust in flaps may cause issues. i recently adopted some testing by my own, and its directed to push slighlty and gently the flpas every day, and time lapse i remember to do it. so, my usb flaps isnt opening istlef everytime i really matter the fact that my flaps would open a bit when submerged, that definetly would crack my head LOL.
if my test dont work ill buy brand new flaps, the thing is if it will be tight closed as stock ones when was right out of the box.
So, my wife works as a steward and had some sweet and sour sauce spill on her, like a lot of it, and now her phone thinks the headphones are plugged in always.
I tried a pipe cleaner dipped in alcohol, I tried a small piece of material soaked with alcohol. Neither have solved the issue. Any ideas on what I can try?
Compressed air?
q tips with light alcohol on it? might be too risky though, as you might lose some cotton in there. maybe do that first, then do the compressed air to get any leftover debris out?
also, you can use one of those things people use to floss their teeth. idk what their called. not flossers. they almost look like mini bottle cleaners.
Looks like this: http://www.lulusoso.com/upload/20120501/cleaning_feeding_bottle_brushes_Mini_bottle_brush.jpg
can usually find it in the dental section of the store. those might work better than q tips since the chances of losing fibers in the headphone jack is less.
I tried gun bore patches with alcohol wrapped around a pick. In the end it just worked itself out. -_-
