**NOTE** There is no reason to take this OTA any more. There are two custom-stock ROMs based on 35B. See "Edit III" below for links!
Well, it is confirmed beyond any reasonable doubt that this build can't be rooted. The currently known root method for 5.1.1 LG devices, along with every prior root method all fail. **Note attempting root will take your Software Status to "Modified", even though the actual root fails. We do not know whether this will prevent taking future OTAs at this juncture.
More importantly, this build cannot be downgraded using the KDZ method. You can, in fact, downgrade using the TOT method. See EDIT II at the bottom of this post.
It's interesting to note that the Verizon G3 update page has this to say about 35B:
Upgrade to Android™ Lollipop v5.1.1, which features a new interface and tighter security features
Click to collapse
That could be innocuous, or it could be precisely why we can't root or downgrade any more. I'm guessing the latter.
So please, consider yourself warned, for now if you upgrade to build 35B (which is the LG/Verizon official 5.1.1 Lollipop update), there is no going back and there is no root. I'll certainly update the OP with any developments that come along.
If anybody hears about a new root method for LG phones, please don't hesitate to post here and we'll be happy to investigate it. Would that I were smart enough to figure out how to root phones myself, but that's beyond my abilities. Godspeed everyone already on 35B.
Big thanks to:
@roirraW "edor" ehT for coming along with me and being a fellow guinea pig, helping test and verify all of these problems.
@Unjustified Dev for attempting to help try and get this thing rooted.
Trying to look at the bright side, if you see my comments about performance and battery life, this build is actually quite good, especially for stock LG/VZW, so good on them for actually putting out usable, well-written software (unlike their 5.0.2 build).
EDIT - The KDZ file is now available for build 35B. Get it on AFH Here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347834649 or straight from LG here: http://csmgdl.lgmobile.com/dn/downloader.dev?fileKey=FW5EEB7232L2ATO02223HOO/VS98535B_00_ARB00.kdz
Remember, you cannot root this build right now. You've been warned. This is posted essentially for people that are already on 35B and experimenting with rooting. Now we can get back to 'official' status if we want.
EDIT II - We can now downgrade! Thanks to @agh1701 for figuring that out. You need to download a DLL file (see post #84) and use the TOT method (instructions here).
EDIT III - Stock-based ROM builds using 35B as the base:
SkyDragon 6.0.1 (comes complete with a custom kernel!) by @HolyAngel
Jasmine 9.0 by @hsbadr
Thanks for the very good information. I did not know that they prevented downgrade. Hopefully we can at least get a 35B KDZ file soon.

@hokiealumnus Man...that kind of sucks. Hopefully someone will be able to figure it out soon. No more Candy for you ...and Halloween is right around the corner too
Thanks for having the courage to try the new build & providing feedback. I'm sure your info saved, and will save, a bunch of people from taking the update and losing root. A thousand thanks to you my friend :good:
I'm crossing my fingers for you to get root back ASAP :fingers-crossed:
I don't know if this is true or not and do not mean to perpetuate rumors, but I saw this posted as a comment in the droid life article announcing the update:
"........ JoeInMO • a day ago
If you're rooted and use Wi-Fi tether hotspot (unlimited data users) you're out of luck with this update. Also the new modem seems to automatically throttle data speeds and limits. If you're stock it may be OK, but if you're rooted DO NOT install this update (and you won't keep root). The FASTEST modem for the LG G3 is the 12B modem. The 23A and 23B are slower (I've checked in many places in the USA). It seems they're trying to limit the use of unpaid wi-fi Hotspot usage via the modem. There is NOTHING beneficial to a rooted user and make sure and BLOCK this update. If you're stock then go for it. Just another LG screw up." http://www.droid-life.com/2015/10/06/verizons-lg-g3-gets-update-to-android-5-1-1-vs98535b/
But, in the spirit of trying to prevent people from losing wifi tethering on unlimited, here it is, take it with a gos...
so confirmed can't downgrade? tot method I would think would work... altho technically kdz should too.. If we can't even get root on this or downgrade there isn't gonna be any roms based on it... and even less chance of getting stock M on our phones with root. Super sucks having a locked bootloader :crying:

Well, roirraW "edor" ehT is hopeful that they will release a KDZ that can be extracted to build stock-based ROMs off of. However, those of us that upgraded hoping to get images quickly are stuck for now.
I've never tried TOT, so I'll have to research that some more, but I'm scared to do it, because what if (rather than blinking a couple times and doing nothing), it works but triggers a counter that hard bricks the phone? That's, regrettably, not something I can chance, because this is the only phone I've got with no budget for a new one.
Before this week, I'd have said you were crazy if you said I wouldn't be able to downgrade, because that's how it's been through four different builds now. At this point, they've scared the initiative right out of me.
What I'm truly hoping for is root, with the ability to install TWRP and get this mess resolved that way. There seem to be smart people willing to work on it.
This doesn't surprise me given how Verizon treats the rooting community as a whole. Heck they were pretty reluctant to even carry any Nexus devices at all and even then it's like pulling teeth to get them to sell them at all.
Right right... I can try myself but if it ends up being zero chance of downgrading then no more development on this device from me unless we eventually get root or unlocked bootloaders.. I don't have an issue risking it since I don't need my g3, but just a heads up.. I might try it tonight since I have the tot files to restore back if its possible.
An extracted system and boot would be all we need for a rom to be a made tho..

Hmm...perhaps you should hold off, since you're the only stock-rom-dev-with-the-device we have. If you get your device locked to 35B you'll doom SkyDragon followers! If you keep your device away from 35B, you can still make a SD build from the extracted KDZ, assuming they do release one, which I presume they will eventually.
@roirraW "edor" ehT , do you plan on attempting TOT? If you do it, maybe that will act as proof-of-concept & keep @HolyAngel 's from being potentially locked. Totally understand if you don't want to do that too...can't expect others to take the risk when I'm not willing!

I plan on it, but since I never had any success using the TOT method, and one of the things I was going to try to get it working for me is do it from another PC. I need to set one of my spare junk PCs up to do it, just don't know how soon I'll get around to it, real life, you know.
I might try it again on the PC I tried it on several times before, that'll be less effort. Windows has been reinstalled many many times since I last tried.

Im happy with their cell service but everything else is "eh". My bill is pretty cheap. 40GB unlimited everything else with 3 smart phones and one dumb phone for $280/month. I travel a lot and VZW could not be matched by ATT nor Sprint since I was always the person with service meanwhile others did not.
I hate how they lock things down. This is where apple shines because they say "we sell phones and people want our phones, you will listen to us because a lot of people want iphones and its a big chunk of your users".

Exactly. For a while they wanted everyone to use that payment thing they had but after a little while, Google wallet was allowed but this was probably months ago. I'm just glad I'm going towards the Nexus so no more of that crap. Them going to full price phones sucks but T-Mobile did it and probably ATT isnt not far behind and sprint.

Nope nothing has changed for your phone. You'll have to wait until Verizon sends 4.4, your way...but most likely running it via SafeStrap is going To take quite some time if its even possible.

actually were temp set on that aspect we'll be able to run safestrap with 4.4 just like the AT&T and Note3 users I've got all the file templates ready even in a minute or less i'll build these "magic" upgrade / downgrade SS methods . I've got everything ready just need a leak or official firmware and modem. so as soon as someone comes privy to it please PM me. I'm sure hash will be putting his own update out very soon but we wont be waiting because there will be a workaround. all the waiting tho... this is why If i didnt have unlimited grandfathered in (17TB tethered last month eat it vzw it was proven in court tethering is legal and were able to do what we want with our phones you can't stop us.) or I wouldnt ever b willingly giving my money to a company that deliberately delays and with holds updates from customers so they can lock their crap up more... when they know and we know no matter what they throw on it we will prevail. just stupid we'll be getting 4.42 as 5.0 comes out for the rest of the world lol also why Tmobile is taking over verizon's losing a large percentage of its customers to them next year or so. I was loading 4.4 on tmobile phones in jan its now april and were still waiting. we should start a bounty for a hacker to be pulling test firmware or leaks from vzw for us

It's expected. Verizon is the Apple of android now. Locking and blocking so they can find ways to make even more $ from subscribers. Its shameful, but it's business. They have maybe the best service and until people start dropping them they can pretty much do what they want.
Just hang in there and hope that someone finds a way to downgrade so you can get root and twrp back. I believe @autoprime is looking into it in another thread. That's a good thing. :good: Be mad at Verizon still, but be patient too.

He means v10b and v10c, of course, and many people are reporting the same issue. It may still be possible to revert to v10b from the OTA'd v10c, which would solve our problems with this OTA, but anyone who has not flashed v10c OTA yet should avoid it best as possible until there is better clear information about reverting.
Remember when Google first updated the Chromecast firmware and that patched the only known exploit for it ? It took a while to get around that. I think the Chromcast Devs eventually did, though...I quit following and just stayed stock.
How about instead of being furious with Verizon, you point the blame at yourself. You're the one who was stupid enough to take an OTA, despite common knowledge being that OTAs will patch exploits and have been known to prevent rolling back to older versions.
Not to pile on, but I am really surprised by the number of folks that have eagerly taken the OTA. As with just about any SW update, it's usually best to let someone else be the guinea pig. Not to say I'm not sympathetic. Still, at least your not on a Samsung. I spent the last year on my GS3 stuck in the past usually running TW 4.1.2, but at least I was free!
I had an issue, took the ota, and couldnt fix through TWRP. Flashed back to 10B stock, then took the ota, and now Stump wont work. I would imagine that if you used to .tot, and LG fladh tool, and go back to 10B, that all will be right with the world again.... At least, thats how Samsungs are, now that Stump wont work with 11C. I took it simply for the improvements, already had a camera shortcut on the lock screen

You cannot go revert back with a Samsung anymore. With release of knox on the S4 the first update after the MDK bootloader locked anyone out of reverting back. I'm fairly sure every Samsung bootloader after that on other devices worked the same way.

It looks like you cannot revert to v10b via .tot, either. Still might be a way, but things seem rather bleak about that.
What is bad for us all is that developers, already annoyed at Verizon and LG both, for good reasons, are likely see there very few Verizon LG G3 users that are ever going to be able to benefit from their work left. So, they will give hacking the Verizon G3 up as not worthwhile, maybe, and we will be stuck with a stock-only device. Its a problem to consider.
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
GS3 got Knox at 4.4 and couldn't be rolled back as I recall (might even have been when 4.3 released). As bad as that was for the unfortunate folks that took the OTA or had to do a warranty exchange, the worst part was that it fractured the development into two camps, and that seemed to expedite the winding down of dev support for that device. I really hope that isn't what happens to the G3.
FYI- I just saw this post from @autoprime basically suggesting evidence of anti-rollback code in the new BL. Not a shocker, as VZW has been employing that for a while now - at least on Moto and Samsung devices. Sigh...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56437577
Yep... First they locked down the S4...and a short time later the S3 got the Knox bootloader essentially locking everyone who updated into using TW. Safestrap helped many but AOSP was no longer an option for them. It really sucked for development on my S4 as you need to know if a room was for mdk or for Safestrap.
I'd hate to see that happen here to the G3...BUT i will not give up a custom recovery just to get the latest update.... Even if the development community never is able to get a working updated rom.

I was pretty tempted to take the update. But coming from experience with Motorola, I knew better. I checked the forums first before taking it.

Nope. I have my phone setup perfectly. I'm on 10B, haven't even updated to 12B/C/D or whatever. I would update to deodexed 12B if there was good enough reason, but I definitely wouldn't jump to lollypop. I won't use lollypop until my next phone (G4 once it gains root).

Shouldn't be a problem if you've frozen or removed the updater like a good boy should ?
Coming from the Moto X 2014, I enjoyed 3 months of Lollipop unrooted. On a Verizon phone at that, go figure. I'm hoping to take 5.0 or whatever version is served up to us asap...
Battery life seems to have taken a bit of a plunge in LP according to this
http://blog.gsmarena.com/benchmarking-android-5-0-lollipop-battery-life-samsung-galaxy-s5-lg-g3/
What is the updater file name? I run a custom Rom but want to make sure it isn't enabled. I searched the system files for anything with OTA in it and didn't see it. But I have had to TOT back to 10B twice since I bumped the phone and don't want to be vulnerable if I should ever have to do it again. Thanks.

On VZW you should freeze the following, not sure on a custom rom
com.lge.lgfota.permission
System Updates
It depends on whether or not LP fixes the audio hiss issue. My phone is my portable mp3 player, and although I love having root, it's gotta be a good phone and good music player first. So frustrating hearing hiss while listening to music... I'd lose root in a heartbeat if they fixed this.
Lollipop is super sweet... Kinda hard not to want it on my g3 after using on my Nexus 7 2013. I mean basically with me running a ROM I have a Nexus 6 with removable battery and expandable memory lol...
I am a little disappointed in Stock lollipop on the other carriers. I do like the new notifications, task mgr, users, etc but I just like the status bar toggles as they are in Stock lollipop...
Luckily xposed is now slowly creeping into lollipop so I'd say in a month life will be sweet!
Although, real talk, if the g4 comes out with 4gbs of ram (yes I know it's not needed but I want it for future proofing) I'd probably sell my g3. But honestly lol I really do love my g3, g watch, etc and am very content hanging on!
some people still use Polaroid instant cameras.
I will update at the first second available.
Depends on if I can keep root across the OTA. I've been able to keep it from 10b to 12b, we'll see what the reports are out there. If I can keep it, and if I can downgrade back to 10b if needs be, then I'll probably try it out.
LP on my Nexus 7 (2012) has been hit or miss. After it's been up and running for awhile, my Nexus 7 will just freeze and I'll have to reboot. I don't have that issue with KK, especially on my G3. The G3 currently runs smooth and I rarely reboot it, ever. And it runs just fine.
So, I'll have to wait and see how things go with LP on this device. As it is, there is a memory leak in the latest version and no word yet from Google on if/when that gets fixed.
Could it be that verizon got so hammered from the issues surrounding the S5 update they are holding off on ours till they know its good
Not likely. I see Lollipop updates are released for other phones even the Galaxy S4.
I see people posting about how they're ready to give up on this phone because of the lack of update for one important feature. TBH, I don't blame them since I blame this entirely on Verizon. Serious lack of support here, and they couldn't even shoot a minor update for VoLTE. I'm just enjoying what I can with my phone and I'm on a two year contract anyway. If I were given the choice, I'd be grabbing the Z3 or Note 4 instead just because of more options. Until then, I do solidly hope there's something we can look forward to for just an update since it's already May now.
Exactly, figured today would be some sort of update since it's may the 1st and Friday which typically good things are always on Friday, lol. Just extremely annoyed when I need to look something up when I'm on the phone and can't.

It's funny how terribly unreliable Verizon's own network info is to their own employees. First it's claimed we'll have VoLTE for Q1 2015, and we're in the middle of Q2. And all Verizon can say is subscribe to so-and-so link to receive updates.
Still no known info...
Now you see why "root" is so important, had we had root by now we would have a custom ROM of Lollipop at least.
Verizon always sucks when it comes to stepchildren phones (top tier phone but not of the brand Verizon wishes to push).
VoLTE will be just like all of Verizon's brilliant ideas, buggy, uses more bandwidth and works far worse than analog ever did, and no one actually asked for it.
Bombard Verizon with request until VZW gets tired of it, scream loud and scream long, only way VZW seems to listen. :good:
Yup I've been Facebook messaging Verizon every day about advanced calling. Just to bug them
so the tmobile version just received lollipop and again still no words from verizon and even the international xperia z received lollipop now. wtf!???

No they wouldn't have been able to port another lollipop rom over just because you have root. Normally this is all you need for most devices but with the Z3, devs need the update to be released first before they can make roms for it.
The T-Mobile Z3 has been rooted for about a month and still has not seen one custom stock rom. Reason being lollipop hadn't been released yet by T-Mobile

Oh that's great news. I was hoping that since we had to wait so long that they would just skip 5.0 and jump to 5.1. So hopefully by the end of July or sometime in August we might see 5.1, I assume.

Like your optimism, thought I had read that when lollipop is rooted it needs a unlocked bootloader (Zygote was a temporary solution) cause you have to be able to flash a custom kernel to gain root, our phone's need an unlocked bootloader or we will be back in the same situation again, besides makes more sense to have an unlocked bootloader.

Pretty sure we just need a pre-rooted ftf. That is the way it worked with my Z2. As long as you have root and recovery you can flash the prerooted ftf without unlocking the bootloader.

Hope you are right, that would be nice.
It does sound possible from all the threads about the pre-root tool by zxz0O0.
Will have to wait and see.
Thought: why was there a root bounty when this was available?

Because I don't think you could flash anything without first having root on it. lol

Really, can you point out where it says you need to be rooted already: http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/tool-prfcreator-easily-create-pre-t2859904
Was this the method used to exploit root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784900

Read the first paragraph of the PRF Creator thread
"What is a pre-rooted firmware
A pre-rooted firmware is a firmware, which already includes root. This is for example important if you want to update the firmware to a version, where there is no public root exploit. To flash a pre-rooted firmware, you need a recovery menu. An unlocked bootloader is not required."
Root is required to install the locked dual recovery, hence you need to be rooted already.
Hm, just a small say here. I flashed back to the shipped firmware that our phones came with from last year (still rooted), and I'm seeing for sure the battery doesn't die as quickly as the current firmware that's out today. What I'm trying to say here is, I hope Lollipop is designed for better battery efficiency for our phones that does have it achieve a 2-day battery life sort of deal. I don't know exactly what it is that the current firmware is making our phone die faster, but I hope Verizon does some right in it.
Plus, this is already halfway through June. Total bullcrap nonetheless about the lack of update anyhow.

I felt the same way. So I did a factory reset from stock recovery, set everything up again but left it on the .44 update. The only xposed module I am using is gravity box and I disabled sync for google calendar and changed exchange sync to every hour rather than push. I'm using stamina mode with Extended Stand by, Extended Usage and Stamina Clock enabled. I sync a few google items and my outlook email. Location services are normally disabled. I've barely used my phone the past couple of days so this speaks more to what I am getting with it in stand by but I've been off the charger for 52 hours and 35 minutes and am at 52% battery remaining. My standby drain is ~.5% per hour. Which is pretty good.
edit: I'm on a moderate LTE signal most of the time, and used wi-fi for a few hours.
So, I have just noticed (been informed) that when I call other Verizon users, my inbound number shows as "Restricted." So, people who have me as a known contact never see who it is and screen my calls.
However, calling to AT&T, at least, my ID shows and they know who I am.
I am on Nameless ROM, most recent build. I don't think that this happened on SkyDragon 5, the previous ROM I had.
Anyone else seen and solved this problem?
Neither my wife or I haven't had this happen on Stock LG, for what it's worth. Just a piece of info to keep in mind. Has anyone been able to tell you if this issue started at a particular time/day?
No, I have no idea when it started. I only became apprised of it this past weekend, when people I called said I looked unlisted.
I went to NamelessROM about two weeks ago. Prior to that I was on SkyDragon 5. I held off on SD6 because I wanted tether. now xdabbeb's mod works, so I could go there.
I'm trying to download xdabbeb's VS985 ROM and bootstack, but AFH is offline.

Argh. Confirmed. That sucks. I'll PM you a temporary private link if you like. Got to upload it first so I'll PM you as soon as it's done.
Looks like AFH is up right now.
Thanks for the response. Once AFH came back, yesterday, I downloaded the 35B bootstack and VS985 ROM and got them both up and running quickly. Restoration of apps worked perfectly, and my phone was recreated successfully.
I still show as Restricted, so I clicked some security setting, somewhere.
While I love CM on my Samsung tablets, I think that Stock LG is better for this device. Really enjoying a new beginning.

Yeah, personally I haven't liked CM as much since I've owned devices with enough RAM and storage. The relative lack of posts regarding issues with 35B, versus 23C and 24B shows just how smooth it is. Mods make up for some of the other things we normally get with CM.
Weird regarding your restricted issue. I still wonder why to people on some networks and not all. Please update us if you finally determine your issue!

I feel silly. It was my account. I couldn't unset it with the MyVerizon app.
I had to dig into features on the VZW website. I was hesitant to do that, since I cheated on the Best Buy contract extension to keep Unlimited data at current prices. So, any change to the account could, in theory, wreck it for me.
Anyway, buried in the add/remove features area is a Caller ID section. I had been investigating on how to ban all Restricted/Unavailable Caller ID numbers from reaching me, as my house had been for sale, and greedy realtors were spamming me. Somehow the checkbox that I thought would protect me instead made me look Unavailable/Restricted. So, friends and family were screening me out.
Therefore, it wasn't any ROM. Just user error. Still, it prompted me to try out xdabbeb's ROM, and it is all good.

Cool. ☺ I used to use Mr. Number app but it lost some functionality so now I'm using Extreme Call Blocker.
