Capacitive touch buttons do not light up - OnePlus X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I just received my one plus x today. The phone is amazing both in looks and performance.
However, i noticed that my capacitive touch buttons do not light up ever. It is hard to spot them even in full light. I just wanted to make sure I did not receive a defective piece. Is it supposed to be like this?
Thanks in advance. Cheers!

Yep I noticed that on the reviews too.. its doesnt light up

I found the Faq around One Plus X - looks like lot of doubts being cleared in this one.

Can you please tell whether it has an inbuilt call recording feature?

The OnePlus X doesn't feature Hardware Button Backlighting

Your question has been answered two posts above yours already.

I don't really care because i use sofware navbar, but i don't see why they didn't make lights for the capacive buttons. Is it so hard and expensive to make? Because it could be nice

The idea is to conserve battery?

This is awesome. One less thing to disable. Backlight in buttons is really dumb. It´s just two or three buttons. How can someone not remember two to three buttons?

I've come up with a procedure to compensate for the lack of backlit capacitive keys:
Materials required:
Scotch tape
A glow-in-the-dark paint pen
Steps:
Place a piece of scotch tape over the bottom bezel.
Using the paint pen, draw the appropriate symbols on the scotch tape directly over the capacitive keys.
Wait for the paint to dry per the instructions on the paint pen. (Note: Baking the device to speed up the paint drying process is not recommended!)
Wallah!!! :good:

Pretty sure he's kidding lol.
Do NOT try this at home.
And anyways why do you need buttons when you have doubletap2wake? Also after using smartphones for a while don't you guys know where the buttons are usually located?

But there is no danger in it, so you could try it at home or your office, wherever...

Looking at most of the photos of this phone, it was difficult to see that this phone had capacitive buttons. Not to mention some photos with the software navibar on. I know it's nice to have options, but with a phone this size, I'm almost rather they reduced the bottom a bit more in favor of a slightly longer screen and opted for just the software navibar.

you dont even need to use doubletap2wake because this phone uses active notifications and motion sensors to switch the screen on whenever it is taken out of the pocket or picked up.

It's Not Light Leakage!

I kept reading about this in the forums until I got mine and noticed it for myself. It's actually not light leakage. The light from the capacitive buttons is so bright, it reflects off of the, ever so slight, edge around the glass. If you feel around the edge, you can just barely feel the raised edge. The way this thing is built, I find it hard to believe that they would skimp on that part.
The light is visible even if you cover the buttons, so it's not reflecting from outside the chassis. No doubt it's hitting and reflecting off the glass, but it's internal, where you would expect there to be some sort of enclosure around the LEDs to prevent such an occurrence. Doesn't really bother me though.

I believe you're right. Reaper said the same in a similar thread around here. This phone is sealed tight, it's not like the OG EvO. HTC needs to tone down the capacitive buttons in an update. For now, Screen Filter works.
the buttons on the bottom sometimes active when your thumb is hovering over it, not even touching it.. pretty crazy, i thought i was nuts but i've replicated it on not only my phone but my wife's phone as well
I like it better turned off.
Damn, your right! Oh well, not a deal breaker by any means. I guess I was quick to jump the gun, lol.

Mine does it too. The capacitive threshold is set too light. Hopefully that's a build.prop value (or something along that line that can be edited) that we can adjust when we get root.

Very clearly light leakage. I covered mine with electrical tape and it was still EXTREMELY obvious. I could honestly care less though.
Call it what you want, but it's due to the capacitive buttons being excessively too bright. People are complaining regardless of "light leakage". It needs to be toned down a tad.

A flagship phone should not have "minor design flaws"...don't recall any of my phones prior to this having any light leakage.

Never has a single problem with my EVO in the year I had it, with the exception of dropping it down a flight of (concrete) stairs last month and completely destroying it. No light leaking. No speaker issues. No camera issues. No flash issues. No button issues...need I continue?
Clearly HTC is capable of making a (physically) good phone...don't know that this one is it.
there are plenty of people who had light leak and screen lift with the evo.
just because you got a good one does not mean that overall the build quality was better then the evo 3d.
Those damned lights are so bright, I can see the outside on a sunny day. What a waste. Gimme a setting to kill them permanently. I know there's an app, but I like auto brightness on the rest. Somebody make an app that let's me leve auto but turns off those lights!

Anyway, done arguing ...There's nothing I can do about it now. I just don't want people trying to claim it's not leakage when it clearly is.

[Q] Sensitive Home, Search key..constant launching in landscape mode

When i'm in landscape mode taking photos, playing games.. i find that my palm is accidentally either launching the recent apps screen overlay (from pressing home key a few seconds) or launching the search key. I don't feel like im over doing it. I rest my palm on the bottom right corner. When i now pay attention, I try to hold the Evo 3D in landscape mode with my hands in two C formations facing one another.. so that i dont accidentally launch those quick keys.
Are any of you having this issue too? it's annoying to frame a photo.. and then the Recent Apps screen keeps coming up and I have to back up out of it. Would a case be helpful? possibly looking at one of the TPU cases when they get it back in stock. is there a way to adjust the sensitivity of the keys?
i've done all the OTA's available..
It's normal. Happened on my EVO 4G all the frakking time. You just need to be careful not to touch the capacitive button. You don't actually need to touch the button to activate capacitive button/screens, only be a few microns away.
I also have that problem I'm hoping root will fix it

ok thanks that is unfortunate.. that is exactly what is happening.. just barely a tap on the lower edge triggers it. Wish they could've moved the sensor away form the edge.
My otter box defender stopped that from happening to me. I know this may not be a solution you may like but I'm just throwing it out there. I need the case due to me working on cars as a hobby and I will lay down on my phone while under a car not even thinking about it.

Just wanted to update.. having a TPU case with the raised ridge on the bottom defintely is helping prevent the unwanted "ghost" launches from the Recent Items and Quick Search capacitive buttons.

Maybe just me, but it feels much more "well-built".
The battery back door is much harder and stiffer than the flimsy original black one.
Also the batter back door is smooth, I personally like the feel better when compared to the textured original battery door.

Oh sorry, my bad. That was just my way of testing the power button without turning off the screen haha.
No the power button and volume keys don't stick at all.
EDIT: Oh I see what you mean. You mean the part when I test the volume button, a menu pops up in the back right?
That is because I use the AudioManager app and when I press the volume buttons, a menu pops up that asks me if I want to change sound profile
It is not the power menu.

[Q]How to reduce touchscreen sensitivity?

I think it's way to sensitive.
Sometimes when I move my finger pass the screen it presses the button. It doesn't happen all the time tho. Just 10% of my typing, which is also happening now.
Thank you for your time.

weird, the default touch sensitivity is normal. may be either its not suiting your taste or your previous mobile is les sensitive.
Feels alright to me, but apparently Gorilla Glass 2 being thinner helps increase sensitivity.

a lot of folk here in Thailand seem to get this problem too
they said it's like xperia sola floating touch but worse
I suspect batch product replacement coming soon
I've noticed that it's very sensitive too.
On the s2 people were saying the sensitivity is too low. Now ppl are saying its too high...

The OFFICIAL samsung said my hands were dry with caused extra static (in Thailand it's a bit cold and dry despite that it's a rainy season, maybe it's the air-con)
and that they recommended applying Vasline to my hands prior to use... which seemed to be pointless, that's a lil too much of "Design for Humans" don't ya think lol
I wish i could readjust the sensitivity like I could with my Acer Iconia Tab A500
Mine does the ghost pressing too sometimes. It isn't often, but my finger hovering over the display will activate it.

I tried the touchscreen with both latex and vinyl gloves and it works perfectly, so I guess it's really sensitive.
if you think it's very sensitive for you, then you can apply screen guard to reduce the touch screen sensitivity.

I only found gyro calibration and did that. I'm also on rom (Omega - ICS) but did not see anything on stock either. I remember on SGS2 there was option to calibrate where you had to touch corners and center.
It's not that annoying, at first I thought that it might be a feature - air touch
Or it might be that my screen protector does the opposite - increase sensibility. In any case I need to get new one because this one is not clear (its a bit matte) and colors don't show up correctly.

[Q] Touchscreen sensitivity

Hi - If I touch the screen *very* gently, it doesn't register as a touch.
Does anyone else have this? If your P9000 is OK, please let me know.
Most of the time it's OK, but it's extra annoying when I'm swiping a long word which gets split into two smaller words. I do have the screen protector on - Obviously I don't want to remove it just for testing, but I realise it might be affecting sensitivity.
Over the years I've had ~5 phones with capacitive touchscreens. This is the first I can touch without it the phone 'realising'.
Thanks, Richard
PS - I've enabled the 'Show touches' in Developer options. The accuracy is fine, it's just it's not quite sensitive enough.

yes, i have glass screen protector on my p9000 and it makes the digitizer less sensitive..
Thanks NX82. That's good news and bad news !
I want to have a screen protector, but sometimes the phone doesn't recognise/acknowledge gentle taps on the screen.
I'll try one other screen protector, if that doesn't work, I'll ask Amazon to replace it.

Yes. my screen also less sensitive with the screen protector, but i dont want to scratch the phone, so i rather use with the screen protector.. for me the less sensitive areas are around the edges of the protector.. but i can live with this problem. I know if i remove it gonna be okay again.. maybe possible to put a thinner folie on the screen and thats gonna be better. the protector glass is a little bit thick. probably this is the problem.
I also experienced a reduction in sensitivity after applying a glass screen protector. Without it phone always reacted okay, but with my protector the first miliseconds of my touch aren't registered it seems. I have more trouble typing and sometimes swiping lags. I have adjusted my usage and can live with it now though.
Yes a screen protector can make it less sensitive. But all I did was download this : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=br.shop4apps.touchscreenbooster.com
And then set it to super optimised and make sure it runs at boot and problem solved.

Well see how it goes and hopefully it does the trick. The p9000 glass isn't anything special. Don't want it to crack or scratch so we need something to protect it.
I have tried several touch calibrarion apps.
It seems like the restart is necessary to apply the new settings.
for me this application gave the best result:

I've found out/realised that the bottom of the phone is less sensitive than the top, so compare the top and bottom half of the screen.
The top of the screen is *almost* as sensitive as every previous smartphone I've owned or used (mainly Samsungs, HTCs and various iPhones). I can just touch the screen without it registering, but only just.
The bottom of the screen is a lot less sensitive. When selecting (tapping) things, it prob wouldn't be much of an issue, but when I Swype using the 'keyboard', I get dropped letters.
A screen protector reduces sensitivity further (a glass one more than a flexible plastic one, from my experience)

I changed my screen protector for one from gearbest. Now it's working like a charm!
