Contacts disappearing!!! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
This past weekend I have noticed that a lot of my contacts are now gone. I know of two contacts that I have made in the past couple of weeks that I know for certain are gone. I still have their messages in my phone, but no name is attached to the number. It is like the contact information has completely vanished!
I read that there is a way to restore all contacts to the way they were in the past, but now there is a message that now says:
"Contact recovery may not work if you're restoring to a date prior to March 21, 2016. We are currently investigating the issue"
Does this explain something on Google's end that is messing up my contacts?
Any help would be appreciated.

Alright this is getting freaky. I updated about a dozen contact names that were lost. And five minutes later every one of them had disappeared. Any help would be appreciated thank you

I've searched for several hours to find out more about the issue. So far, I haven't found any first-party websites that have more details on the issue. As far as restoring contacts go, unless you have them saved on another app or something of the sort we just have to wait until Google gets it's crap together. Ironic because March 21st is the date my phone decided to go ballistic on me and do a memory swipe. But yes, if anyone has any further information it would be greatly appreciated.

Contact restore functioning again.
Google contacts restore is back up and running. I had a warning on my phone saying that there was an issue with google and contacts. With the return of the restore, I was able to get all of my contacts back and I am happy.

Verizon 2.1 OTA Eris Update Yields Corrupted Contacts?

My friend received her Eris 2.1 OTA update from stock 1.5 today. She tells me half her contacts (previously synced from her last VZW phone, a two year old Envy) are gone, as well as a bunch of other settings, apps, etc.
Anyone else having these issues as well? She's none too happy, specifically about the losing the contacts. Any work arounds? I recall a similar thing happening to the Droids when they received their first OTA update...something about exporting and re-importing the contacts?
TIA!
I didn't get the OTA because of root but as long as her contacts were synced with her google account it shouldnt have touched anything with her contacts that wouldnt have been restored when she signed in.
actually I have a coworker who got the update and all of her contacts restored except for the ones which she had assigned a ringtone to (mostly family). She wound up having to reenter the contacts because they disappeared from the gmail site also. I made sure to export my gmail contacts so that if something screwed up I could restore them back on line.
None of mine were corrupt. In fact, my phone kept everything that was on it, including wallpapers. All ringtones that were assigned were still attached.
thanks guys. a call to VZW cleared it up, she entered some code into the dialer, reset the phone, all contacts except a couple were restored. most apps were uninstalled however, as well as phone customizations. kinda a PITA but it's back up and running so it's all good. thanks for the responses!

[Q] Atrix - SMS Issue (Wrong Recipient)

Little frustrated with the Motorola Atrix and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions.
I am having an issue with SMS messages going to the wrong individual or starting a second threaded conversation with the same contact even though there is only one instance of this contact and one phone number attached. It's very similar to the reported issue 9392 that was supposed to be addressed sometime a while back.
This is my second Atrix and I have experienced the problem on both handsets. My first purchase was back in April of this year and within weeks that problem started to occur. I had tried various custom ROMs and SMS applications - but they all had the same issue.
The second handset was just received this week. I have gone through and completely cleaned up any duplicate contacts and exported them all to a CSV file and re-imported in hopes of finding a culprit contact. I am syncing with Exchange 2007, but had disabled Google Contacts, MotoBlur, Blah, Blah. Now I am only syncing contacts with Google and mail and calendar with Exchange.
I have completely reset the device and running full stock ROM with no applications installed outside of what is included in the image with the phone. Since a majority of my communication is via SMS on my phone - it has become a big hassle. I just get tired of having to apologize and explain my misguided text over and over again.
I have tried several 3rd party SMS apps and all have the same issue.
Anything you guys could suggest would be greatly appreciated. The only thing that I could possibly think of that I have not done is replace the SIM card which is one I got with my first iPhone a few years back.
**Note: I have a WP7 running Mango that does not have this issue.
I'd be leaning toward a bad sim. Why don't you just go to your carrier and get a new one? AT&T has never charged me for a replacement sim. Just explain your issue and that you've tried all other avenues to correct the problem.
For the duplicate thread I was able to solve with
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1210840
others said it didnt work if they were syncing facebook contacts.. I dont sync
contacts with anyone but gmail contacts.
but here is the basis of the fix that worked for me
Ok I think I solved it my last solution wasn't did not continue to work.
your contacts need to be stored / saved as
this format +12223331234 and some work with just 2223331234
but all work with the first (so far)
(111) 222-3333, +1-111-222-3333 both fail
if you look how the sms db stores them its like the format first mentioned and when using that format there are no duplicates
Click to collapse
Well, I tried to replace both the SIM and reformatted the numbers as suggested.
However, neither of those worked - so I dug a little more and narrowed it down to Motoblur and adding accounts under it.
I did find that if I did a hard reset of my phone and then used a new email address to setup a 'New' MotoBlur account (since you can't delete or reset an existing one) and then did not add accounts under MotoBlur - the issue resolved itself.
I still added a google account and exchange account - but everything else, like facebook, I downloaded the application to avoid MotoBlur from aggregating information into.
Hope that makes some sense and thanks for the reply.

[Q] Contacts Storage FC

Hi,
I froze the apps in a list via a thread here. Mainly authenticators I dont use. Everything was fine until today. Now I can't open any contact info or make calls without getting Contacts Storage (com.Motorola.contacts) force closing.
I unfroze everything and rebooted my phone but it did not fix my issue. Has anyone seen this before or can point me in the right troubleshooting direction Id appreciate it. Thanks
Figures it was the last one at the bottom I forgot. Yahoo authenticator can't be frozen or it'll FC contacts. Im sure this has been discovered already.
delete blurcontactssync.apk will solve this problem, no need to restore yahoo authenticator.
The more changes I make to blur the more problems I seem to run into. Contacts has been working fine like I said. Now I can't purchase apps from the market...tried everything. Google Support told me to factory reset. **** that. Buying new phone. So sick of this PoS

Backing Up

Hello,
I have a droid x and recently ordered an sIII. I had a few times where the x went out and when linking it back up to google i always had contacts that were missing that never got synced over. Currently some of the recent contacts I have entered are showing up in my work outlook contacts. I want to make sure that all of my contacts at minimum will transfer from my x to my new phone when I get it. What is the best method of doing this?
Anything else I should consider backing up when moving to the phone? I am not concerned as much about the applications as I can download those again.
Any suggestions welcome. Thanks for the help.
Should I have posted this to a different location or is this the right spot for this sort of question?

[Q] Google contacts repeatedly download until full (25,000)

Hi,
I have a problem that might be to do with the new google contacts, at least it happened within the past couple of weeks or so.
Problem is I can not add any contacts, or rather I can, but they do not stay for very long. I save them to my google account where I have around 900 contacts.
I have now tried Contacts Fix Sync, and it reports that I have 25,000 contacts! So I am assuming the reason why new contacts are not added is because it is full. Using Contacts Optimizer, it turns out they are all duplicates (which is not the case when logging into my contacts on my PC).
So somehow it seems the google contacts keeps on downloading until it is full.
I have tried everything I can think of: reseting/erasing my phone (One Plus One), and now I have just tried on another different phone (LG G2), and it is the same problem.
It seems that recently, I am not sure when, google implemented a new Google contacts system, perhaps that is the problem, perhaps not.
Anyhow, it is quite annoying to say the least, basically I am not able to add new contacts. Any suggestions?
I have also asked this question in the Gmail Help Forum, so I hope I am not violating any rules. If I am, let me know and I will delete this. I also asked a similar question in the OPO XDA forum yesterday as I then thought it was to do with OPO (had not tried on the other phone at that time) - I will delete that one if I can.
Thanks in advance.
