So I know there are already some pretty talented devs working on the prime. My quotation is... Is anyone working on unlocking the bootloader? Just curious.

I doubt anyone is working on it. Asus has already said they will unlock it. It would be nice if a dev could figure it out so we didn't have to possibly void our warranty, but hacking an encrypted bootloader is not easy without a leak from Asus or direct help from them.
Yep we need a leak, bc 128 bit encryption ain't no picnic

No one is gonna work on the boot loader since it would take so much work to gain such little ground with the unlook tool coming at some point.

What we should do is start asking Asus when are they going to unlock it for us. They claimed once ICS dropped we would get access. I have wrote on there FB and twitter profiles and asked when are we going to get it unlocked. I think we need to ban together again and spam the crap out of them to get what they said they were going to give us.
We have bigger fish to fry, let them get this thing working correctly first, we have root, just have to wait a little bit. I read on here somewhere about a February release time frame..........

Because asus really needs another thing to be bothered with right now, when their current flagship tab is experiencing many quality control issues.

I agree. As much as I'd love an unlock tool now, I'd say we should all wait until most of the problems settle down a bit before we go spamming them about it.
Yeah, but we could have the developers here working for us as well. A lot of them could do better jobs than most companies to fix the problems. Having asus working on one end and developers here, we could accomplish so much. Once the bootloader is unlocks it will still take some time for the developers to do there thing. So the earlier they have access, the better IMO
Sorry to revive a dead thread but I didn't want to make a new one.
Why wouldn't devs want to unlock it? That way we don't have to void our warranty. Also, how do we know it will be a complete "unlock"? If you have looked at HTC's unlock tool, you'll know what I mean. If you use HTC's unlock tool, it makes it a ***** to flash kernels, cant be done through recovery, and they cannot flash radios with their unlock tool. How do we know that asus won't pull the same ****. This is just my opinion though. I'm not a dev by any means.

I'm sure the devs would love to just be able to unlock it but the encryption they use is so good you basically need Gary Key or someone from Asus to leak us the bootloader encryption key. Brute force methods would apparently take longer than the life of the device.
I just wonder how many devices would not have been returned if we could do a proper wipe on our own had the bootloader not been encrypted.

I flash kernels every couple of days with my HTC unlocked method Evo 3D. The only thing that sucks is that I have to be at a PC to use the fastboot method to get into recovery. There is also an app that you can use to flash a kernel. I haven't tried it yet, but I heard it works great. I haven't tired flashing a radio yet though so I can't comment on that. If it was just a locked bootloader that would be one thing, but they (ASUS) put a 128bit encryption on the bootloader as well. It would take a long time for them to break it. Maybe with the unlock tool, someone could see how they use it and find out how to break it with out using the tool by ASUS. But we won't know until the tool is out and available to the public. I am hoping once it's available, and rom's/tweaks/kernels/ect start being made, more developers will buy a TFP and join in to make this tablet into a beast!!
I think Asus unlocking the bootloader would be a brilliant move for them. They would get rid of sooooo many warranty claims. It would be the single best thing they can do to keep the TP from becoming a major financial black hole for them.

Asus like any company comes down to being a business and businesses want money not to please every customer corporations are greedy and that's the facts
But don't you see ? If they allow you to unlock your bootloader, the moment you do that you are waiving away your rights to warranty. So one less warranty claim to worry about. One less warranty expense going against what must already be a very deep hole in their earnings.
It better be fully unlocked with an nvflash recovery! Otherwise I am returning it both of them and the dock
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yeah, I know there has to be a lot of people who wouldn't have returned theirs if they could have simply downgraded back to Honeycomb while the issues with ICS were worked out. That along with it voiding everyone's warranties would have meant a whole lot Primes not getting returned.
Asus is in the business of making money though so apparently they make more of it by having a wifi tablet locked down while the returns roll in than they would otherwise. I can't imagine too many devices being bricked because of flashing roms but apparently ASUS has done the research that it is cheaper for them to do it this way.
It certainly isn't carrier influence, which I could see in the case of a 3G/4G device, but this is a wifi only device. No carrier to screw over here with tethering or whatever.
OK I am receiving a di4g today to replace my stratosphere which whent belly up. it is like new replacement
so I am confused. I see roms but i see things in the forum like "NO ROOT YET" so which is it.
I chose this over the nexus because I wanted a global phone and the repo told me it would be a global phone.
so I assume that it will have the update "yes?"
is that why there is no root yet.. ie the old one had a root the update does not.
can someone explain in nutshell the 'state of the phone'

Aptly put.
Also, the newest update allows our phone to be a used globally, but it didn't take away root, Verizon stopped allowing our phone to be unlocked via HTCDev a week after it came out. We're about to have S-OFF, which will re-enable root.
The first few weeks htc dev site allowed people to unlock their phones and install a recovery and roms. After that it was disabled and the reason is up for debate still. Recently an exploit has been found and root was achieved. Now people are just waiting on the tool to be released by that dev team that allows s off and root.

others have been waiting for a while now, and not too mention this phone is basically Verizon's dead horse, so we are VERY lucky that I was able to even get the team to put in their free time to get the tool made.
They are making the tool. Root IS confirmed along with S-OFF.
ONCE the tool is SAFE, then they will release. THEN you can donate to their team, they specifically ask that you DO NOT donate until the tool IS released.
They are doing this on their free time for a phone they do not own.
I spent about 8+ hours total of my time as well with the team letting them remote access straight into the phone thanks to a root exploit found in the new 2.17xxx OTA update found by superdave, that I passed on to the team which they then were able to successfully attain S-OFF, on two Incredible 4G phones, one completely stock like yours, and one that was previously rooted by HTCDev unlock tool before that option got taken away.
The only thing you can do is to please wait patiently, and when the tool is released, please donate to them then. If you want to trade up for a Galaxy Nexus if the tool isn't released quick enough for you that's your choice, this is a great community though and we'd love to have you stay with us.
Thank you,

Very much appreciated guys!
I only helped Nit with 1 ROM though and he did the majority of the work, and 100% of the next update on the new base thus far (he is killin it! and is a true pleasure for me to be able to work with.) so I can't take too much credit there, but I do appreciated the acknowledgment, you guys donated just as much as I did, I just spent the time with the guys, having a community as awesome and understanding as this one is like a once in a decade kinda thing :good:
It's hurting me just as badly not having the S-OFF tool out, I can't wait for everyone to be able to use their phone the way it's intended to be used..
the way you want it to be!!
I'm also very thankful to superdave for recognizing that the new RUU has an old exploit and the unlimited.io team are simply amazing people, as soon as I mentioned the exploit I asked them if it's something they could work with or had the time to check out, and without a pause they replied to install the RUU, and come back tmw (since they are in wayy tiff diff zone than myself) and the next 4 days straight the worked with me and are such nice people to work with and all the hours made it worth it looking down to see S-OFF, and knowing that what could have been a failed phone be what it deserves to be.

Hello!
I don't know, maybe someone remembers me from P880 forum
Whatever - in that time the 4X HD had locked bootloader which no one was able to unlock it, so I decided to make a petition about it (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852721). We succeed and we could unlock the bootloader via fastboot oem unlock in Jelly Bean update.
Now LG did it again, their G2 and G3 flagships as well as some other devices are locked as hell again. I decided today to reopen my petition and share this message to You guys so maybe we could get the unlockable bootloader again, or at least a way to unlock it like it is for example HTC phones.
Here's the link to the petition:
http://www.change.org/petitions/lg-...opportunity-to-unlock-bootloader-in-lg-phones
Let's have at least some hope for it, so we could get easier development and also G3 development could rise.
My reopened petition has 4031 supporters (for now) so it should be a little visible
Individual emails have also the meaning. If You have a minute, please send emails to these addresses, also don't forget to mention about our petition:
[email protected]
[email protected]
EDIT: I'm posting in G3's petition thread to prevent (my) spam, also G3 community is the most active, so that's why I decided to keep posting and updating there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/petition-possibility-to-unlock-t2832032
Thanks reas0n for your petition I also signed it. I also remember about the 4xhd locked bootloader, I wanted to buy that after I sold my 2x which bootloader got unlocked by wkpark, but I didn't really bought it because of the locked boot loader.
Maybe with unlocked boot loader display problems mightnbe less and less vertical stripes while flashing ROMs. Unlocked boot loader would also offer more possibilities and better then bypassing the jellybean boot loader.
I hope this petition reaches fast the 10.000.
This should be on xda news so the petition will be fast 10.000 times signed by xda members.

Agreed on both counts.
But if LG is serious about putting a dent in samsungs sales they had better reconsider this locked bootloader for all crap.
If a carrier asks for it thats one thing but a generic lockdown is total BS.
Ive been waiting to get a G3 since they were announced and the locked BL is a HUGE letdown.

Thank you for your feedback regarding bootloader unlock and
we are sorry for any inconvenience and disappointment that have been caused by lack of support for bootloader unlock on the latest LG smartphones.
We are already aware of many developers’ requests and opinions on bootloader unlock.
So we have been preparing a server to provide safer bootloader unlock.
Also, we are internally discussing the target model and the time of providing bootloader unlock.
However, it will take some more time due to the technical restrictions, security issues, and the policy of mobile carriers.
We deeply apologize that we are unable to support bootloader unlock right now and would like to ask for your kind understanding.
We will let you know more specific information when the support policy for bootloader unlock is decided.

What are the advantages of unlocked boot loader? As we have custom roms recovery root aosp roms etc..then for what?
I see other carriers have been able to gain root access. I am wondering if anyone is working in a root?? Would love to donate for a root + wifi tether abilty (heck, even just root). Maybe us Sprint users can get a "bounty" going. I cant be the only one wanting root access and to able to take advantage of thesr amazing Spark speeds.
From what I know the reason sprint doesn't have root with the others is because it was given an update the other carriers never implanted.

LG won't be unlocking the bootloader anytime soon. Go read the thread in the main G3 forum for the discussion.
MY understanding is that the reason the LS990 doesn't take the same root exploit as the other variants is that the directory structure is different so the vulnerability doesn't exist as it does on the others. Whether that is due to an update (that must have happened at manufacture as it was different on launch day) I can't say. And there may be other reasons, but that is the one I know about.
There is at least one method that is pending release, but the most optimistic date we have is mid-August, and my guess is even later owing to some bad eggs stirring the pot.
The answer to this question, every time somebody starts a thread like this, is WE DON'T KNOW when we'll get root, but we PROBABLY will and all we can do is WAIT. It's not for lack of interest that we're stuck waiting, so pounding on the door won't get it open any sooner.
Final thought: This forum will explode with threads all saying the same thing when a method is released, so you won't miss it.

There is more to the work of releasing a root then being stingy. If people like you keep trying to turn it around like you are entitled to the work of others, it will only keep you waiting longer. So Stop it!
There are a ton of reasons not to release it even if Root is possible, the actual process of Rooting the device may be a technical process that 90% of users would screw up and end up blaming the creator for.

I didn't find him, somebody else posted about him, I just contacted him to get info. Honestly, I wouldn't pay 50 bucks even if I was local to him, I don't have that kind of money to spend on something like that, but he seemed genuine in his goals and his reasoning.
Anyway, the point is, let's not get at each other about being patient or acting entitled or whatever. We're all in the same boat. We're all waiting patiently (or impatiently, but it makes no difference). We can't sweet talk the devs who have the means and the knowledge, and we certainly can't manipulate or intimidate them into moving any more quickly than they wish. Heck, jcase is in Vegas with his family and was laid up with a fever and a sore throat to boot, and he's still been working (on other devices, but still). He's not just sitting at his desk reading these threads with his fingers tented and an evil grin. It's just not at the top of anybody's to-do list. We just have to trust that it's moving up every day.

Thanks for the support, and what's the main difference between a bounty and petition? (On XDA at least?) How will it do us better?
*Edit*
Okay, a bounty involves donations, which does seem more attractive to Samsung, but I'm not sure how to set up donation links, secure payment, etc.... If someone does and makes a thread, that'll be cool too.

Thanks for the support, and what's the main difference between a bounty and petition? (On XDA at least?) How will it do us better?

No problem!
A petition is for Samsung, a bounty is for hackers.
**UPDATE**
We're now over 100 signatures in! Thanks to all who have signed already! If you haven't already, a minute of your time would greatly be appreciated to sign the petition. Thanks to all Note 8 users!

It is hopeless- that is why I dumped my US model and bought international s7e. I have both s8 port and early oreo ROM on it.

I would I paid off my phone, but it's too much of a hassle for me to sell it and find a new one. I'm broke and still in school? I had an Exynos A5 2016 before this and definitely going for Exynos next time around

Signed. Doubtful, but hopeful. I don't know the rules around it but I feel like setting up a community bounty and seeing who would be willing to chip in might be a bit more effective. I feel like the Snap Note 8 community is pretty sizable to sum up enough of a bounty to attract some capable hackers to put some time in.
Signed I'm sure it won't matter but at least we tried right? Hopefully someone can eventually bust this thing wide open would be a nice phone to do whatever we want on it. MAN why did I go back to the AT&T route instead of international unlocked?
Signed.
Later than sooner, i wont say it's impossible, but for sure damn near. It's about forums and private site's, (US) who will make it possible. I've been programming for a little over 20 years although a different kind, CNC programming. Ive taken apart many phones including the note 8. Making a custom removable back cover is easy but when it comes down to analyzing every part in the phones. G-code was my first programming language to ever learn but 20 years later ive come to understand many languages. I'm just one part of a large group of people, each with a different set of skills. If anyone know's how to read a blueprint or schematics, or have a knowledge of how qualcomm bootloaders work in general on the note 8 specifically. sorry if this not the right place to post, ive been aware of the forum for long, signed up when the s8 came out. I want to contribute, just never have thought saying thing here as i havnt seen anything about custom modifications so the physical parts.
Signed still haven't lost faith

So to be clear, a petition shows a desire by the community to change something. Even if you got 10,000 signatures. Thats a small small slice of the pie for Samsung.
Bounties are to give individuals that may have the know how to achieve a goal, some incentive to do so via monetary compensation. I highly doubt a company like samsung or any large publicly traded company would even acknowledge a bounty and Im sure there are some legal rules against doing so. Not to mention they stand to make more money from NOT unlocking the bootloader and compromising knox than they stand to make from a bounty on xda..
If this bootloader is to ever be unlocked it will be by a team of code breakers as it took a team of coders to create this bootloader I'm sure. The bounty has to be a lot higher. Maybe there's a way of hard wiring through the eeprom and recoding the bootloader. I knew someone who did that to recode the mileage on a new odometer without going to the car dealer but I guess that's rookie stuff compared to this.
only a bounty on XDA would even make it ever so slightly possible; some talented folks have tried since day 1 without success..
petition to Samsung? now THATS funny!
They could care less about any sort of petition to make their devices less secure..
Signed,
I hope that the snapdragon variant does get an unlocked bootloader, but I would be extremely surprised if that ever happened. It is all completely under control of the US carriers as they are the driving force that causes the bootloader to remain locked. I originally had a Canadian SM-N950W and after being annoyed by how I couldn't do what I want with my own hardware that I shelled out a pretty penny for, I recently bought a SM-N950F from Amazon and sold the W. I think that's probably everyone's best way to go. Voting with your wallet is the only way to solve such problems. Although, since there is a large majority of users who have the snapdragon models who don't care to root, I don't see it making a huge difference in the long run.

Wallet is only way to vote unfortunately. Why would they ever unlock this when the note 4 is still locked? Eol phone and they don't unlock it, reason being then you wouldn't buy the new model. This will never happen, I'm sorry.
Note 8 killed my Samsung loyalty. All previous tv's phone etc. Never again.
