Need help! My Redmi Note 3 just blew up... - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

So, I bought a XIAOMI Redmi Note 3 a couple of days ago. Yesterday I was charging it with the original charger and cable and noticed that the device was getting really hot (almost impossible to hold in hand kind of hot). So I plugged it out of the charger and after 1 or 2 minutes the device started inflating, popping the back of the phone and catching on fire ( ) . I immediately put it in a bucket and let the fire go out and noticed that the battery had become 3 or 4 times bigger than its original size. The phone is now probably ruined as many of its parts are completely burned. Do you think I can replace it with a new one? Since the warranty lasts for 2 years from what I've read.
Note that I had unlocked the bootloader (with the official way), and also flashed a custom recovery as well as a root and a custom rom. I know that unlocking the bootloader and flashing root doesn't void the warranty but flsahing a custom rom does, but since the phone probably doesn't even turn on, do you think I have a chance to get a replacement?

You're flashing a custom ROM, you already know the risks. For the sake of humanity, please stop telling lies to the shop/company/manufacturer because it's not good.

I never lied to them. I haven't even contacted them yet. And what does a custom rom have to do with the phone catching on fire? This was a stable rom without any problems or bugs whatsoever. How can you be so sure that it was not a faulty battery or a defective charger that caused it?

This should not be an issue of custom rom, I feel this should be an issue of defective battery /charger.

That is my guess to. I hope that one can get a replacement or a refund in a case like this.

If you voided the warranty by putting a custom ROM on then Xiaomi don't have to fix or replace anything at all. Even if a part was faulty (and almost certainly is to blame of course).
You could try to warranty it and see what they say. Worst case is they say no. Best case is they give you a new phone to keep you quiet.
Sent from my Redmi Note 3 using Tapatalk

I think you'll get a replacement, say nothing about the rom. Supposedly there was a quality control issue with some batches.
Just wing it get a refund. Post pictures to seller. If you used PayPal your all set.

Say nothing about the custom ROM and they won't care , good luck mate!

Flashing Custom ROM doesn't voids warranty , already confirmed from Mi care here in India

Thank you all for your comments. I will apply for warranty tomorrow and will update you on any news (good or bad).

Good luck mate

Is it possible to damage phones with custom roms ?

The Reason i ask is either it is or i am the unluckiest person ever with a S2 lol
So far got the phone at xmas wasn't happy with the screen colours sent it off they said the main chip was faulty and had been replaced and a software upgrade etc...
Got it back and flashed a custom rom, well a few and noticed that i then had an issue where if someone called i had to put loudspeaker on in order to hear the other person...
Put phone back to stock and sent it off again...
Phone came back last week picked up monday used for a day all seemed fine, flashed a custom rom got another problem with the phone this time i have to put the loudspeaker on to hear other people they can hear me fine...
So its back to stock and back to vodafone tomorrow...
So can custom roms/kernels cause physical issue's with phones, never had an issue with my HTC Desire HD but i'm beginning to wonder if i should leave my next S2 stock, or have i just been unlucky ???
Would also add when going back to stock the screen colours seem much better than custom roms but the sounds issue's remain...
One word NO!
What rom are you flashing?
Checkrom, wickedrom, illusion Xt, not sure which if any has caused any issues could be I'm just unlucky
Definatly noticed issues with screen colours too which now in I'm back on stock have been sorted
Its all a bit weird

Trust me if that was the case damaging my phone by flashing a rom then my phone would of been damaged goods by the first month i had it
Anyway just be careful how you flash a rom and it is always advised to do a full wipe before installing one
Um, actually, yes.
You run the (slight) risk of bricking your phone every single time you flash something to it. If you're the type of person who's paranoid about these things & can't handle the idea of possibly not getting warranty service if things go wrong, you shouldn't be messing with your phone in the first place.
Anyone who has an expectation (as opposed to a "hope") of warranty service after they stuff around with the phone is an idiot.
The SG2 is a hard phone to brick. Follow the general guidelines and you should be fine. I can't imagine flashing a rom can break this phone. Worst that can happen is you brick it. Either it works or it doesn't.
Yeah Im fully aware that you risk bricking the phone
I've been flashing roms to HTC,s for years always trouble free
I always read and full wipe between flashes
Sounds like I've been unlucky then 3rd time phone is going back and since Xmas 1day without a fault not a great introduction to Samsung for me...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
In all my time reading SGS1 and 2 the only ones who have bricked their phone are the idiots (1) who refuse to read instructions . Even then 90% of them have been able to recover .
the SGS2 quota of 1 is getting higher day by day for some reason .
jje
Yeah 3 physical faults though in a month which is what got me thinking maybe installing the custom roms is causing an issue, but if others are installing with no issue's i've obviously just been unlucky
Hopefully this time i get it back its sorted...

Seconded..
It's possible to introduce some new bugs by flashing a custom ROM (that's the price of development, you uncover new weird stuff), but not to physically damage the phone. You'd have to fiddle with the battery or greatly increase the voltages to accomplish that.
If you experience hardware issues after flashing a ROM, it means that the hardware was faulty before, and flashing the ROM just uncovered it and made it obvious to you whereas it was hidden before.
But don't let it get you down. Apparently a lot of SGS2's are faulty when coming out of the factory and need to be replaced.
The first one I had didn't last the night, it 'overcooked' itself when I plugged it to the mains to get it recharged (I knew those phones could get pretty hot but damn ! a 100°C is too much for it, it didn't stand the strain and gave up)..
In fairness they suggested a new phone in Vodafone today so it's gone back with the the request of a new phone rather than repair so we'll see
Also if anyone is interested I obviously flashed a few custom roms and reset the counter to zero and installed original Vodafone software and have had no issues warranty wise

I seem to have been lucky with a Vodafone SGSII, I'd have insisted on a new phone from it's first problem, Vodafone have always been pretty good at replacing.
I am wondering however how did you manage to reset the flash counter ? Even with a USB Jig mine won't reset. It will go into download mode, but that's it. I presumed my six week old SGSII was a newer one a jig won't work on.
Before trying to reset the counter you should flash the old boot loader (pre-KI1) on, the new one cannot be reset safely with a jig. Works just fine after this
What Snakeforhire said i flashed the old bootloader reset the counter with the USB Jig then reflashed the new bootloader...
Updated through kies and sent back...

Amaze Bricked

---See Update below at end of this post---
The phone was running fine till yesterday however it got discharged. Upon reaching home, I put the phone on charge forgot to turn it on. I remember the orange light on phone was on. About 2 hours later, I noticed that there was no notification light. I tried to turn on the phone but it didn't turn on
I removed the battery and tried again, the same thing. I put the charger cable back in, the orange light blinked a couple of time and it became steady orange. Tried to turn the phone on again and the light again went off. I tried the same thing over and over its the same result. I connected the phone to windows, its detected as qhsusb_dload and need drivers for it. I've searched around xda for it, I've found it means the phone is bricked for phones having qualcomm chipset, but the strange thing is it usually happens because of bad flash. My phone was running fine without any problems for past couple of weeks and I hadn't had flashed anything for last 2-3 days, I don't know what went wrong
Any idea how should I proceed ?
I bought my phone from eBay about 3 weeks back. I'm thinking of contacting the eBay seller and ask if they have tmobile warranty for it?
The other thing I could do is purchase squaretrade warranty and ask them for a repair 45 days later.
But I don't know, I had unlocked the bootloader and installed a custom ROM on it (although I was on stock kernel). Do you guys think, HTC or squaretrade will honor the warranty on it ? I know the second option is kind of immoral, but i dont want to lose $400 I just spent
--- UPDATE 03/31 ---
I got the replacement battery from HTC, using it my phone started. Later on, I changed to X's touch recovery and kernel to Faux 009 and guess what I was able to revive my dead battery also by charging via phone itself... I dont know where the bug lied exactly as somebody mentioned at other place the stock kernel in NRGZ thread is different from tmo stock and causing problems. My guess is bad recovery though as the CWM 5.0.2.6 for Amaze here doesn't support off charging...
--- UPDATE 04/05 ---
Member andy55 confirmed this bug is due to bad recovery and the stock kernel itself is fine.
I would suggest everyone to not use official CWM 5.0.2.6 recovery. Rather switch to Xboarder56's version of ClockworkMOD 5.5.0.4 or Touch 5.8.0.9 RC2
If a mod can put this above information in the reference thread for Amaze..It would save a lot of potential probs in Amaze's in here

Yes, I know its the most strange thing ever happened.
Do you or anybody know if sensation battery works on it. My room mate has a sensation I can ask him for his battery and try it out
sounds like the same thing that happened to my backup amaze. I swapped batteries and the same issue was affecting the other one, so its the battery. One of my amaze's is rooted rom'd etc and the other is stock, and the same issue affected the stock one, so its not a brick.
Good time to upgrade to an anker

HTC also replaces any accessory once, you could call and they'd probably send you a free battery.
I just got another back cover from them, since my old one was creaking.
To Discharge the battery, you could get a couple led lights and tape them to the + and - terminals of the battery and just let it die.
Radioshack has leds.
Probably not the easiest way... But it would work.

I tried to shorten it using just a simple wire and connecting the positive and negative terminals..however it doesn't seem to be doing anything
Already gotten the back cover myself..now I have both black and white covers
Will they send out second accessory also ?
I think they will send as many accessories just as you only ask for one of each. That's what it said on the paper they sent in the mail.

ok went to the TMO store on my way back...but guys at there refused to test it out saying they don't have any tester battery's...moreover I'm not a TMO customer so they said they can't me help much either
Anyway, I called up HTC customer service, it seems they do honor warranty on tmobile sets, however I just asked them to ship me a replacement battery for now, if that doesn't work, I'll send the phone over to HTC for repair...
BTW customer support guy said the notification light blinks in case the battery is extremely dead. I hope it does work with new battery...I don't know how will they take it when they find unlocked bootloader and custom ROM installed on it...

With your phone being s-on, you can't technically brick your phone. So as long as it's a hardware failure, and you don't have s-off and haven't been holding out on us you should be fine.

If you have a qsb_load brick caused in any way, plz try to identify your phones emmc like they did here in the link for the sensation in a Linux environment. You can only access this mode on a bricked phone.
I think we may be able to s-off using a version of this method. Ultimately intentionally bricking a phone and achieve installing a cracked boot loader and s-off.

Ok, I went through the thread to make out, what they are trying to do, however, without much success...
I couldn't find the pin they use on sensation to ground it to SD card frame, to put it in download mode. See the image attached, its kind of different from sensation. Also I can't find it any instructions for Linux environment, its mostly windows based (drivers and software). Can you point out the post or do a write up ? I have a mac with me, I'm guessing it would be same for os X also..
Anyway I don't know, if I should be doing all this...since I plan to RMA the phone to HTC incase it doesn't work with new battery.
However, if its indeed battery related and it does work with new battery, what I can do is ship you the battery which causes the brick. You can try the things on your Amaze, if you want to...since you seem better technically sound than me

HTC Sensation Battery DOES work in the Amaze.

I use Anker battery 1900 mAh from Amazon.
I use an external charger also found on Amazon (white- about $10).

Galaxy Note repaired with an upped flash counter

I sent my Galaxy Note into Samsung to get the screen repaired.
When I sent it off, I realized that I forgot to reset the flash counter.
I was scared ****less.
Anyway, they repaired it and it is about to be sent back to me.
I just thought I would let everyone know that there is nothing to worry about.

I think you just got lucky bud and I would not encourage anyone else to do the same thing. Just because they agreed to fix your phone doesn't mean that everyone else will be as fortunate. Samsung and your phone carrier clearly stated that if you do flash a non OEM ROM you will be voiding your warranty.
Also, lets wait till you get your phone back before you consider this a success.

Yeah. I wouldn't recommend it. I feel like if I sent my phone in for some sort of software issue I would be out of luck.
I will update this thread when I actually get the phone back.
it might depend on the repair in question. A screen replacement is just hardware so they may not mind the software being a custom ROM. I sent in a GT 10.1 with AOKP installed to fix a screen issue. I'm sure they noticed the angry rainbow unicorn when they booted it up. They fixed it no problem though annoyingly, they actually WIPED my entire device, sdcard and everything back to stock. On the GT 10.1 boards, no one has had that happen except me.
I have to send my note in for a repair on my SD card slot, which keeps popping out the microsd. My phone has a custom rom and probably 3 on the flash counter. I was hoping they didn't care since it was a hardware issue. On a side note, it sucks that AT&T doesn't give out loaner phones while it's being fixed.

Makes me wonder if they just gave you a different phone? Or you memorized the hardware numbers? I agree with you being a hardware issue, they are probably not going to care about the flash counter. If you sent them a boot looping device that had the flash counter up high, then i would suspect they might say something.
No real worries guys. I had to send my phone in to Sammy for a screen issue a couple days before braway released the counter reset. They repaired it with no issues, wiped the ROM and reset the counter for me lol. This was back in late March.
Edit- in my case, they gave me the same phone because the Bluetooth physical address was the same. They replaced the screen including the front glass, so I didn't get my screen protector back.
Im pretty sure the techs there get paid by the hour and Im also sure that they themselves(techs) flash custom software on their devices. If I worked in that dept, I would spend the extra time resetting your flash counters and reverting you to stock, only to make my day go by quicker... I wouldn't recommend betting the farm on that. IMHO

I sent it off Monday and I already have the tracking number for the return shipping. In any case, I am using my old iPhone 3g until I get my phone back. It's always good to have a spare.
So people wouldn't recommend it, but who here has actually been denied service with an upped counter?
Traditionally, going all the way back to my Nexus One, the phone manufacturers don't care about root/s-off/flash counter if it's a clear hardware issue. If your button stops working or your screen doesn't respond anymore or your phone doesn't charge, they generally fix it.

3rd Galaxy Note random Shutdown (ATT)

I've had Galaxy Note since February of 2012......Had it replaced three times under warranty through AT&T for same problem. (At least AT&T overnighted the replacement unit got it today)
All the note I had loved to shut off automatically and randomly........
1) Whenever I pickup a call, the phone shuts off (all the time)
2) It reboots by it self inside my pocket
3) It reboots by it self sitting while sitting on my desk
I see a lot of Note user are facing this problem........is there any solution? I've tried couple stuff that was posted on numerous posts.
Also what should I do once my warranty expire? I have 90 days under this refurbish warranty....original phone was till February 2013.... not sure when will it expire.
I've called: AT&T Customer Relation, Customer Service, and Warranty Department as well as Samsung Tech Support. (The only thing I got $25 credit towards my bill)
A Gentleman from Warranty Department told me that he always see this problem.........he sent me a replacement unit immediately and even offered if I wanted to get replaced with Galaxy S3.....unfortunately Note 2 was too new to be replaced......but still I have asked to get Galaxy Note.
Spoke to Customer Relation...what a awful service this guy said "I have Galaxy Note but never have problem" and accusing me for dropping the phone and etc........that the reason I've got $25 credit to my balance. (I could have got more but was too tired to fight for it)
Samsung told me that if I face this issue call Samsung again and they will fix it.. But I will be without a phone for roughly 1 week to 2 week.
What should I do after my warranty expire?
Seriously, if you have had this issue with 3 different phones then I would look elsewhere: Battery, Sim, SD card, Apps, or ROM you were installing.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
I have never had a random reboot on this device, regardless of the roms, modem, recovery etcetera.
The note is very stable operationally, and to have 3 devices do the same thing is unheard of.
There must be an underlying similarity that causes this event to occur, beyond the device itself.
As mentioned above, changes to the phone ???
What roms are you using, root method, current recovery, or are you stock ???
If we know the changes that led up to the occurrence, we can generally identify the cause. And if using custom software, a logcat will help tremendously.
I do not want to give the impression that device hardware failures aren't at work here, but 3 devices in a row is virtually unheard of ...
Tell us the device setup at this point ....rooted ?, stock ?.....g
Edit: Are you using an oversized SD card ??....32-64 gig...
Oversized battery ?....5000-5400 mah???
Sim adapter for network other than AT$T ??
Or Sim kit ??
These items are suspect ..and will cause issues under the right conditions, especially battery, Sim, and oversized SD ....g

I have seen batteries cause this sort of thing MANY TIMES. Usually, warranty replacement phones are sent out without a new battery. Is this happening to you? Are you still using your original battery? If so, have AT&T/Samsung/whomever replace the battery!
As others have asked: If you have changed ANYTHING from complete stock (ROMs etc.) you could be creating the problem yourself.
Try a different SIM card. I had this same random reboot problem when I tried to use an LTE SIM in my old N1.
i have this problem after upgrading to jelly bean...
Random reboot is a know issue with certain JB rom variant builds .
Rule this out if stock software is used...
Damaged Sim or Battery is a likely cause ....
But as I mentioned ....if using the ATT note on other carriers, we have a whole new set of parameters at work.
Additionally ....
Your last statement struck me as odd OP.
Samsung said they would fix it ?
That sounds like a hardware issue they have seen before. But before sending off your device, please give us more info...g
is there a stock JB rom for i717?

Sadly no....at least not yet ...g
I think you have a rogue app. That's the only common element in all your phones.
I advise you reset to factory stock and see if you still get reboots.
A great observation ranger ....
You may be on to something ... g
This is a real cliff hanger. Everyone talking except the OP.
Sure would like to know ... All the time spent on the first post ... Must be too worn out to respond to all the help.
Lots of good ideas here.

as everyone else has said, some app is doing it the chances of one person getting 3 notes doing same thing are pretty much zero

If memory serves, wasn't HD Widgets a culprit to random reboots for a while there? I use their widgets and until a recent patch (2 or 3 patches ago) my phone rebooted quite often, by no means to the level of what the OP is saying. I'd have to agree with what others are saying. Look at your apps, keep your phone stock for a while, change out the Sim card and battery. Try to do all of these separate from each other that way you can narrow it down to what is causing the issue.
We will never know what exactly what it is if the OP doesn't ever respond. Right now everyone is just blowing smoke. As stated in my first post, it could be many things.
Maybe he gave up and went to an iPhone
Or possibly his phone is his only connection to us and it won't stay booted long enough.

Well ...the world didn't end .....so we can rule that out as being the cause ...LOL
OP ???
Helloooooooo......
It's mighty quiet over there ....g

[Q] Will Verizon know I rooted?

My S4 suddenly stopped charging the other day, and my immediate response was to unroot and take it to Verizon to see what is up. I never installed a custom rom, but had TWRP recovery installed. I used the No Wipe Stock unrooted image in Odin to put my phone back and Verizon had me to a factory reset. Apparently that is necessary before doing a warranty claim. Now, the guy at the store said that if it was previously rooted, or currently rooted they would reject it and I would be on the hook for several hundred dollars. Is there anyway they can tell that I did root it before?
Will they know you rooted? Not necessarily. However, I'd be surprised if the S4 didn't have a flash counter. Assuming it does, they'd know (at minimum) that *something* was flashed to your phone and how many times something was flashed.

Nope, doesnt say custom. And the device status says official. I am pretty skeptical they will see anything, and the only things I flashed through ODIN were the MD2 and MDK kernels. I just want to make sure I have all my bases covered.
I think you'll be okay. Most likely what they'll do is turn it on to see whether or not it says custom, plug it in to see if it charges or not, ten hand you a brand new device,

Well I already got the replacement device in the mail today. Now I have to send my defective one off. Its there where they will check on the phone.
I returned my phone to best buy after rooting and flashing multiple roms to it and got a new one within first fourteen days and they never knew that I had unrooted it. I know that's different circumstances but just letting you know my experience

I mailed back devices rooted and rommed and never had an issue. I don't even think they check.
