To which format I should convert my 2k and 4k videos to make them playable on Galaxy S3 Neo, any idea?
I get unplayable videos also after automatic mfpmp conversion to WMV.
I tried all these players and several formats, still no luck:
360VR
AAA VR Cinema
VaR's VR Video Player
Homido
Video Player for Android
VLC
VRTV Free
I had some success with lower resolution 3d 360° videos, but I need at least 1440 lines, because such videos are in Under/Over format, which means vertical resolution is actually half of video resolution, so 2K (1440) becomes HD Ready (720) and 4K (2160) becomes FullHD (1080), and when your eyes are 5 cm from display, you really need the highest possible resolution!
NOTE:
is it possible to edit forum engine limitatins about length of tags? "VR" and "3d" are useful tags but not allowed because shorter than 3 chars.

To be safe, at the moment I'm starting this one at Q&A; but if enough useful info is gathered, or, if the mods see it fitting, I would like to move this thread to "General".
if i'm using some farmer terms, plz feel free to correct me so that the final summary is understandable for eveybody.
So the questions are:
1. Which video/multimedia player is the best for android?
- For example which one plays the most audio/video formats,
- Which one gives you the most flexibility as for screen size, zoom, aspect ratio.
2. Which (preferably free) converter to use?
2.1 What is the maximum capability of SGSII?
- How many bitrates etc. can it handle with its mighty processor? How many bitrates and other hd settings are necessary for sgsii.
Please comment
Try dice player..not free though but u can try it for a few days before purchase.

Only an answer to #2, no experience with other than the stock player (yet).
For conversions I use AviDemux.
It's multiplatform and some people I have referred to it reacted favourable as well.
Tried to get a full movie to the SII, no succes yet. (4GiB+).
Kind of curious myself if there is a filesystem which will allow that on a memorycard and leave it usable in the SII and Windows.
No best player for sgs2 ?????? i tried so many nth seems to work fully functional !
Im media playback fan my self, but just to lazy to make guides or explain alot.
1. My favorite players from market
mVideoplayer for daily use and
Diceplayer and or Moboplayer (for rare videos that don't work with hardware decoding and need software decoder)
2.0 I use MeGUI for video conversion encoding to MKV high profile x264.
2.1 SGS2 can playback "MKV high profile x264" 720p @ 60fps and 1080p @ 30fps
I use Handbrake (freeware) to convert my HD videos to 800x448 (or whatever aspect ratio the original video is) and 1000kbps (I don't use TVout, so I don't really need the extra resolution).
Since CM7's video player doesn't support subtitles which I need, I use MoboPlayer and mVideoPlayer to play my videos.
For reference, after I watched a 20min video encoded at the above settings (brightness was at ~50%), my battery lost 3-4% of its charge, which in my opinion is pretty good.
Players that are able to show subtitle on TV screen

I've already tested both players that you mentioned above and I can't get get any subtitle on TV , just on the phone's screen. Any suggestions of players that can do what I need?
I have a bunch of 1080p MKV movies that I want to convert into mobile versions for the Galaxy S II, but does anyone know what codecs I should use in order to take advantage of better battery life?
I play to shrink these down to 800x480 res. Any recommendations on bitrate too?
Also, any software or guides recommended to convert MKV to whatever codec has hardware acceleration for this phone?
All the video formats that the phone can play natively are hardware accelerated. So u can choose from MP4, avi, FLV and so on.....
I don't have much knowledge regarding the subject. But here's what I gathered:
According to Wikipedia:
The Exynos 4210, unlike Tegra 2, features support for ARM's SIMD engine (Media Processing Engine, a.k.a NEON instructions) and this may have a significant performance advantage in some cases over Tegra 2 in critical performance situations such as accelerated decoding for multiple multimedia codecs and formats (e.g., On2's VP6/7/8 or Real formats).

Now, to take advantage of that hardware there also needs to be software that supports it.
MoboPlayer is one such software, that I know of, which has "ARM V7_NEON" playback codec and so it will fully utilize Galaxy S2 resources.
As to regards to which format you should convert...
On the MoboPlayer website is said that: "Almost all video formats(need to choose "software decoding" mode inmost cases)."
So I suppose what you need to do, is to disable "software decoding" mode and see what video formats will be supported in hardware mode.

I live in the US and we don't have the SGS2 released here yet. Can anyone who has the phone already, please test this out and let us know which codecs are hardware accelerated with MoboPlayer?
I found this guide for transcoding:
http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/211070-How-to-convert-MKV-to-AVI-or-OGM-to-AVI-using-mencoder
I don't think there is an "optimum" bitrate because that is going to vary depending on content, ie, number of fast motion scenes. Maybe encode it in VBR and set the top limit fairly high.
I know this phone will handle 1080p MKV, but some of my mkv files are like 12gb!
Hi, dont bother with anything else, handbrake should be your tool of choice. There are various templates included but I usually just set it to MP4 high profile and choose the file size I want, handbrake then does the rest and bloody well too.
Do a search on here for handbrake, there may already be threads about it, note though you should only really have to re-encode if you movies are over 4 gig (fat 32 limit) as I haven't found a file this phone wont play yet with one player or another. My players of choice are always stock first, then mobo, then DICE.

Thanks mate! Actually, I'm getting this phone for my GF for our anniversary and she's a big Harry Potter geek, she has all the books and blu-ray. I've already converted her blu-rays to MKV so she can have them all on the XPS 15, but I was hoping to convert the MKV down to a mobile friendly format.
All the HP movies add up to 80gb so I can't just copy the MKV's on there, that's why I was thinking of transcoding again.
I did find this bit of info on the Exynos:
http://www.samsung.com/us/business/oem-solutions/pdfs/Exynos_v11.pdf
1080p Video Encode/Decode
- H.264 30fps
- MPEG-4 30fps
- VC-1 30fps

It doesn't say what container it supports but from what you say, it sounds like MP4 is the way to go. Thanks for the Handbrake tip!
one thing you should aware of is that if you intend to get the MHL>HDMI adapter at some point you may want to transcode at a resolution a little higher as it wont look great on the TV. If you are just playing on the phone then you can get them down to a fraction of the size. I found the best thing to do was to find a smaller film clip that was encoded as 1080 MKV and run off some tests, then save off the template and batch convert the log. I converted all my start trek films from 8 gig to 2 gig a piece, I left them at 1080p but set the file size down to 2 gig. The all look great on my Phone and still really good on my TV through the HDMI, best of both worlds.

Wow, that's crazy! I doubt my gf will ever output these to a TV. I'm still playing with Handbrake's settings.
One thing I don't get about it is that HP is 1920x800'ish, so when I set it to 800, the height drops down to 336'ish.
I think I'd rather have it fullscreen and sacrifice cropping some of the sides, so I clicked ASPECT RATIO and set the height to 480.
Handbrake set the width to 1152, so I set a crop of 176 on left and right, to try to bring the final size back down to 800x480.
But Handbrake has some weird algorithm that doesn't seem to give the desired result? It changed the output size of the video on its own after I changed the cropping values.
So, I'm not quite sure how cropping is handling in Handbrake, is it done before or after the resolution is resized?
Mobo can't use HW video decoder. SW decoder use SIMD(NEON) instructions.
Exynos HW video decoder can decode 1080p.
Try diceplayer. it use HW video decoder in Exynos ( Multi Function Codec )

Thanks but does it also depend on which container or codec the video is in?
I'm assuming that h.264 video in a MP4 container should be hardware accelerated right?
H264 in any container up to High Profile level 5.0
Has anyone experienced strange issues with aspect ratios in the stock Google video player on the Prime? I ripped my entire DVD collection last year, noticed about 20% were displaying poorly on the Prime, to the point of being unwatchable.
When I open them in other video players or devices they play fine.
Example of horrible aspect ratios:
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6j93pu_G7kvk82wlVonpFrgnicQnztK0IPAGHZxINKo?feat=directlink
Most movies are encoded around these specs:
Kind: MPEG-4 video file
Bit Rate: 156 kbps
Profile: Low Complexity
Channels: Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1
Encoded with: HnadBrake 0.9.4 2009...
Total Bit Rate: 1903 kbps
Video Dimensions: 853x480
Video Codec: H.264
From the specs, you're using anamorphic encode. The encode is done at native DVD res (720x480 NTSC), and the aspect flag is set to expand out to 853x480 upon playback. The problem is that many of the Android movie players don't respect the aspect flag, and simply play the vids at 720x480, leading to a "skinny" aspect.
Contact the author to update the player, or try a different media player.
Try with another video player than the stock one. E.g dice player or mx video player. I think there is an option to change the aspect ratio in those apps.
Thanks MX Player fixed my aspect issue.
I use Xilisoft to convert movies to MP4. I have done a few for this device. They look smooth most of the time but if the movie has alot of action in a scene the picture gets somewhat pixelated.
I have converted to the correct screen size and aspect ratio. Bit rate at 1200 and FPS at 29.97.
Any idea what the optimum settings would be for this device?
im not convert videos...
I use MX Video and i watch all formats (avi, mpeg, rmvb).
Last movie (yesteday), i see Farenheint 9-11, bitrate was 720 and very good image.
Hi! I'm trying to find a way to play 720p videos smoothly on my Tablet S but I can't find a proper bitrate for it. I tried 4000 but it's still laggy. On some tutorials I found they were saying to use 1500 as bitrate but that is ridiculous. A 720p video with bitrate 1500 will result in a lot of dead pixels. So what can I do?
I'm using Format Factory to convert the MKV videos to MP4 H.264/AVC 720p
Help please :crying:
Sorry bad english

The best video format for the Sony Tablet S is MPEG-4 (mp4) encoded using a H.264 CODEC with a pixel size of 1280 x 720, a bit rate of 1500 kbps, and a frame rate of 29.97 fps. The video's audio should be stereo AAC with a sample rate of 44100 Hz and a bit rate of 96000 bps. I use and recommend Handbrake for converting videos and MX Player Pro for playing videos.

Actually you can just download Dice Player or BS Player Lite. This two video player can play any mkv files I load into it. even upto 1080p  :good:
1080p are terribly laggy

Ok I tried some 720p MKV files and the sound isn't synchronized with the video. Also I still noticed some lag.

Try QQPlayer. I had a lot of problems with video playing slower than audio when using Dice and MX, but QQ seemed to clear them up. Other than that, try using a video converter (such as Handbrake) and use the Apple TV preset. Works for me.
I'm also disappointed by the Tegra 2 performance in video. Here are some thoughts and questions.
From my personal tries, all video players (MX, BSPlayer, Dice) have about the same performance (perhaps BSPlayer with ARMv7 plugin is a little better). Does every video player Tegra 2 video playback implementation are based on the same library?
Is there some way to make some low-level (asm) optimization that would help? I would gladly take a look if there was a way to do it.
I've noticed that even 720P High profile have some lag! Not very serious, but noticeable!! For example, Rise of the Silver Surfer 720P-HP trailer (see h264info.com/clips.html) lags at several points in the video. It may be clearly seen with BSPlayer, when displaying FPS information ('(i)' button during video playback).
1080P Baseline Profile seems to play smoothly (and H/W acceleration is enabled).
Video players disables H/W acceleration for High Profile 1080P so, of course it is terribly laggy. Is it a technical requirement? Isn't there a way to force H/W acceleration for Full HD High profile videos, even if that wouldn't mean full speed?
