NEWBIE - Tablet S slow and almost useless -- will this cure it? - Sony Tablet S

Hello,
Just happened on this forum and thread ...
Ive got a Table S that is now almost useless.. keeps crashing the browser and running really slow.
I have been on the verge of dumping it in the bin for a while now..
I see on the FAQ there is talk of updates and installing files.
If I do this, and do it right, will this make the Tablet S some way usable again?
Thanks
Vida...
PS: sorry if this seems a stupid question.. but there is no introduction on the FAQ it just gets straight to the business of installing the new files. And I just want to be sure this is going to be a wise move...

Newbie!

Hi there people,
Boy have I found the right site ! This is just what I needed ..
I bought my 02 XDA last week (UK) and thought it was the dogs danglies ... and being a little technically minded, just knew it was gonna be upgradeable and have some really cool stuff. But this takes it into another realm...
I've downloaded the 1.1 exe file kindly supplied on this forum, but as I'm still getting my head round the machine and Active Sync, haven't had the balls to upgrade the ROM - not being funny but is it really as good as it sounds ? Can I get into difficulties with warranties etc if it goes wrong ?
Also, is the exe file really all I need ? As I said I'm not afraid of a technical challenge, but I ain't done this before, and would probably shy away from getting to far into the guts - if ya know what I mean ?
I'm going to continue reading every bit of this site, so apologies if these questions have been answered before, but I'd be grateful if one of you good people could reassure me before I do anything dangerous !
Oh and by the way I'm not connected to the big bad world yet, still waiting for number port, so I'm just playing at the moment, but I can see where the desire to change certain things comes from !
One last question - Something is really bugging me, why do the programs stay running in memory when I've closed them ?
Thanks and keep up the good work !
Yes, the exe file is all you need. Yes, you can get into trouble with warranties, but only if you don't flash your old ROM back in before returning it.
You can create a backup of your old ROM using an SD-card, a PC based SD-card reader and our program XDArit. But if your provider offers an upgrade available on-line, you can also flash that when something breaks.
oh fantastic - thanks
sorry for all the stupid questions but does your ROM still contain Active Sync ? I'm using it and find it really useful - or is there something better ?
Oh and I upgraded the version of pocket office to 3.17 the other day as I was getting connection problems while synchronising. Does anybody know anything about the new ROM version ?
I'm also on Radio 4.20.00
and Protocol 32S54 (whatever that is
sorry it was early when I posted that and my brain wasn't functioning - the process of "flashing" the ROM actually requires Active Sync doesn't it ? i.e. the unit needs to be in the cradle attached to the PC via USB - that's how I upgraded to 3.17 - I had active sync running and then executed the download/install exe, which took control of the link and upgraded the ROM.
Does your ROM install work in the same manner or do I need to do something else/uninstall active sync or anything ?
No, you just connect the unit via ActiveSync, run Jeff's exe, and life is good.
excellent ! Thanks a million - looking forward to the changes..
great site and great ideas chaps - well done !!

HD2 & Android Noob questions

Ok,
So this is my first post here, so be nice
I work for Tmo, I have jailbroken iPhone before and I would consider myself pretty tech savy.
Currently Im rockin a Nexus one on 2.2 (love it) A Samsung Vibrant (Eh), and my HD2 is collecting dust waiting for Android.
-----------------------------------
However I was just curious if there is just a quick summary of how to install android on the HD2.
BTW I did not post this question in the Big Linux and Android on the HD2 thread for a fear of being banned!! Geez.
And yes, I used search, and I've skimmed the whole thread, and I've read the 1st 4 posts - and frankly its all a bit over my head & no one really simply answers this question.
I understand Linux needs to be running first, then Humbnti or whatever, then you can run android. But all of that is Greek to me. Like where do I find each one? Where does it go? So and and so on.
If someone could just break it down like this, im sure all somewhat tech savy people could do it easily. How about like this...
1st. You need to get Linix on your phone. Go here for instructions...
2nd. Then you need Humbuntu. Here are instructions...
3rd. You then install android, here....
Something in that format would be great.
And yes I know its not an everyday/ stable build. I have patience, but I would just like some direction.
Thanks for all your help!
Even simpler than that. Its one file. You DL it to your SD card and run it. To get out, soft reset.
Look up "Android HD2" on Youtube. Theres tons of videos on it now. Its here in the HD2 Android forum too... Everywhere.
Sorry buddy,
I think you have been mistaken, if your referring to this video...
youtube.com/watch?v=BujRY_q53JI
Its well known all over YouTube that the guy is a fake. That program will install viruses to your computer & his only intention here is to have people click on his ads.
If you have a video in particular your referring to, please post it here.

[Q] Question regarding rooting and roms

Hey guys, as you can see I am new to the whole wide world of android. I have had an iPhone since 2007 and recently dropped my iPhone 4 on the pavement which completely wrecked the screen. I seized the opportunity to buy an android. I got this s2 for 350 on eBay.
Anyway... I have absolutely no idea what I am getting into here. I have watched a ton of videos and still am really lost. (Sadly)
I have this s2 at 4.0.3 and am completely lost when it comes to how to flash a rom. I get we have to use ODIN, Kies and your rom. Am I missing anything else?
I want to use this. galaxys2root. com/att-galaxy-s2/aokp-ics-rom-for-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777-best-ics-rom/ << I cannot post links so its just a space in between the .com
I have seen videos where I have to root the thing first- or will this do it for me? I have also seen "roms" that are 400 MB in size but this one I like its 134... Am i missing any files or something? I have done searching but I end up more confused than I started. If someone could give me a push in the right direction that would be a great help!
This is the first phone I am actually confused with... I am sure it is easy, just not for a guy who has had an iPhone and developed for them since then... (I am co founder of whited00r )
Start with the links in the sticky. Be sure to read them all.
You said your phone is already on 4.0.3, which is Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). That means it's not stock (aka factory settings, out of the box, etc). I'd personally suggest after reading all the links, returning to stock and starting over from scratch as it's the best way to ensure you don't have any problems, especially since you don't really know what the previous owner did to your phone. The links for returning to stock and for flashing custom ROMs are also in the sticky. Please don't read just these links, read at least all of the other links posted there. That's just the starting point mind you, you should probably do more reading after that on stuff in the posts that you don't understand. I know this will take a lot of time, but it's for everyone's benefit that you fully understand everything you do to your phone before you do it.
I'll even help you out with a couple other links I think may be useful which aren't in the sticky.
ROM vs. Kernel
Odex vs. Deodex
Please hit my thanks button if I helped you. Good luck and welcome to the forums!

From now on, don't watch any videos. They tend to be incomplete and usually outdated. Also, don't use any files or methods you find anywhere else besides XDA.
Like karate104 said, read the stickies at the top of the forums; they will tell you everything you need to know in detail. Read this one in particular. It has links to a lot of useful guides.
you also need to be wary of what you read and watch on gs2root. com
when i first started i used the rooting technique with the kernel from there and ended up with no wifi and ended up having to flash entropy's daily driver to recover
as the guys above said, read the stickies here and go over it a million times until it makes sense
flashing can open up loads of features, but you can very easily make your phone unusable (easily fixable once not hard bricked) but better avoid the trouble than finding a fix
Another victim on galaxys2root!
Sigh!

Honestly, if you're lost navigating a website, take it very slow customizing your phone. Its a lot harder than clicking links with a mouse, and a mistake will be VERY costly.
Don't rush in. Just be a lurker and a reader for a while, at least until you can find your way around and know some basic stuff. Good luck.
I have always found The Unlockr to have very simple and precise instructions. I am also a very visual person so I use YouTube a lot.
Anyway, take your time, root and enjoy and welcome to the asylum!

WOW, "most thread only have a few replies?" ................REALLY?
I think you are looking n the wrong section. as suggested, "Super Everything Thread". you could also look in the Development section. there are threads where I have 100+ posts myself.
I am sure you are not dumb, but you are coming across a little on the lazy side. sounds like you want everyone else to do the work here. you originally posted 3 days ago and haven't found anything yet

How do I theme my new rooted device?

Hello, I was wondering why is there no newb section on this website? surely it would help all the new comers like myself who have no idea what they're doing.
I recently rooted my device for the purpose of changing some Personal Hotspot settings so I decided to look at the other benefits I could get from rooting and one of them is Themes. My question is why is it so hard to theme your device? I thought alot of these theming apps were one click proceedurs however it is not at all the case, speaking of complications when I rooted my device I accidently deleted touchwiz home and ended up stuck on Easy Mode for a whole day even after fully wiping/resetting until I figured out the problem. I still have standard mode showing as easy mode on my device but its actually got a launcher for now so it's all good.
Anyway It would of been good to have noob/newb section on this website so I could get to grips with everything there is to know or most things anyway. Right now I don't really know where to look on this website as there are too many threads that contain complicated titles with terms I never even heard of before so let alone reading the whole threads where I just hear myself reading on and on with no understanding what so ever.
Am going to stop my little rant here, if anyone can direct me on how to setup some easy themes it would be appreciated.

Greetings an welcome to xda. We did have a forum called xda assist where all newbies could basically ask any question, it became unsustainable due to the fact it became a free tech help line for every device.
Most phone's have their own dedicated Q&A thread where you can ask anything. If you can tell me the device you have I maybe able to help you or point you in the right direction at least
Regards
