[Problem] Frustrated by S4 - USB Mobile Modem not responding - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
This is my first "problem" post on XDA, and it's really nice to hang out here reading the knowledge of lots of professionals. However i have a problem with my Galaxy S4 (GT-I9500)'s USB dial-up modem functionality which is not working on Android version is 5.0.1 Lollipop, using Stock Samsung ROM + TWRP Recovery, rooted device.
The problem, as i'm running on Windows 7 x64 SP1, and i first installed official Samsung USB Drivers For Mobile Phones installer (1.5.51.0 - not Kies) just fine and connected by S4 using an OEM USB cable, the device was recognized just fine including the following entries:
- Samsung Mobile USB Composite Device
- My Device Name (as MTP Device)
- Samsung Mobile USB Modem
- Samsung Android ADB Interface

}
But, i see NO "Ports" category and any entry like "Samsung Mobile USB Serial Port" in device manager, hence the problem is, although the device is recognized as Samsung Mobile USB Modem fine in device manager with no exclamation warning, and it seems that the modem is attachted to COM4 virtually, but i CAN'T get any response from modem when i click "properties" > "diagnostics" > "Query Modem" --- "the modem failed to respond" error, can't open COM4 port.
Note that this is my first Android device, i figured out that it's connected at "MTP+ADB" mode which is default as can be seen from *#0808# dial menu. And since using TWRP, there is no "Enable CP Logging" option if switching to DM+MODEM+ADB mode is required to get response from COM port. True?
What am i missing here? The dial-up funcionality was fine on my ancient Nokia S60 Symbian phone with no hassle and it was automatically detected by Windows. Now with Android, it's a bit confusing for me.
What i'm trying to achieve is that i should be able to query modem and get/execute AT commands from serial port terminal (eg: puTTY) just like on old days, and want to use it as dial-up USB Modem on my old desktop PC which does not have a built-in WLAN adapter to reach the internet.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Any help is appreciated.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I am confused on trying to connect as a dial up modem? Why not just use USB tethering?

Thanks for your reply. It's just my curiousity. When i first connected the phone (Stock Lollipop 5.0.1), Samsung USB Mobile Modem device is recognized and installed just fine, that means i should be able to communicate using COM port and establish a fresh-new dial-up connection with no hassle, instead of switching to USB Tethering mode which installs RNDIS network adapter device.
I noticed that corresponding COM port was not installed by default (clever Samsung!) although the "modem" is recognized on USB connection. I'm missing this (example picture) port which is diagnostic port, right?
I have no Samsung Mobile Usb Serial Port driver in Device Manager, and wonder how i can get this working, it really frustrated me.
Do i have to enable diagnostic port to let this "port" appear on Device Manager so i can communicate with my phone as dial-up modem?
(I read enabling diagnostic port is impossible with custom recoveries like TWRP / CWM). So i'm a bit lost, too.
Any enlightening information is greatly appreciated.

You might be able to play around with those settings from "dialing" *#0808#.

Since Samsung Mobile USB MODEM is recognized and NOT WITH the SAMSUNG MOBILE USB SERIAL PORT, i still cannot understand why modem part is exposed by stock firmware in MTP+ADB mode. It's ridicilious and makes completely no sense.

I'm still curious about the explanation of the issue.

For anyone else with this issue, I solved it by on my S7 (G930F) as follows:
Dial *#9090#, servicemode screen appears
Select [4] AP,CP Interface
Select [1] Path
Select the [1] USB option
Click menu button (vertical dots) and select END
Restart phone
Also, use this driver: SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe and make sure the modem is installed with it.

adb problem.

Hello. adb can't find my device. USB Debugging is enabled and the icon is showing in phone's notification bar.

When I enable USB debugging in my phone, in my PC's desktop there pops up a balloon with text:

Before this, there are many other pop-ups, but they show that everything is loading properly.

thats related to driver issue, you should reinstall the drivers and reboot after installation. Else, try installing adb again.

uncheck usb debugging and resatrt ur phn . check usb debugging again and connect it to pc via cable it will install if not just uncheck usb debugging and check try fr sometimes it works.
but the first suggestion works like a charm as it will install drivers sucessfully if done in that order
It can't find my device anyway.
And there still pops-up that balloon with text, in the corner of desktop.
Can't it be a problem with usb cable?

Change the usb cable ,but i think is a driver issue!http://www.filestube.com/cn59lHssznIVvTuaArdOfh/LGUnitedMobileDriver-S497MA20-WHQL-ML-Ver-1-0.html try this driver

I downloaded this, but it only shows "preparing to install" for a moment, when I double click it, and that's all...
EDIT: Now after many driver's reinstalling attempts, also USB Mass Storage isn't working anymore.
... but LGMobile Support Tool recognizes my device.
EDIT2: Here's a screenshot from Device Manager
http://www.bildites.lv/images/m99dribyo454r03mdz6.png
And when I connect my device to PC via USB, in phone's notification bar isn't showing "USB connected" anymore.
EDIT3 : Rebooted the phone and USB Storage works, adb - still doesn't.
UP!
So, does anyone know, what can be the problem? Is there somebody who had the same issue?

Are drivers required for Odin flashing ?

In order to flash my SGS2 with an KE7 rooted kernel (XWKE7 is the kernel when I purchased my device) I tried to install the drivers for Windows 7.
I have a clean Windows 7 VMware session on my Macbook (I don't have a Windows PC, but everything which works under ̇Windows natively also works in VMware session) , set USB debugging OFF on my Galaxy and plugged it int the USB. Then Windows started with 'Finding device drivers' , but it says 'Mobile MTP device: failed' .
On Mac OSX (10.7) it works normally and Kies connects. Of course, I have connected the USB port to the VMware session when using Windows.
And I installed Kies to enforce device driver installation but that didn't help. Moreover, KIES appeared in RED under W7.
Then I tried again under an XP SP3 VMware session, same issue.
Should I first install the drivers before proceeding to Odin or can I use Odin now ? I am reluctant to try as I am scared for 'partially flashing and bricking' the device.
Of course, I'll close Kies before starting Odin as they don't like each other.
Does somebody have any ideas ?

As far as i know, kies automatically installs the drivers for the SGSii when u install it...
Hmm id just try putting the phone in download mode and plug it into the computer with odin open, if the com7/yellow box shows up in odin id say you are good. If not, then yeah. You are good as long as you don't flash anything , you can just pull the battery from the phone to get out of download mode again WHILE ITS NOT FLASHING anything of course .
Just my 2 cents.
Drivers are always needed, without it how would the phone connect?
Luckily Odin simply will not work without the correct USB drivers .
Usb drivers can be found in the Kies folder in program files .
jje
Thanks. But in that folder C:/Program Files/Samsung/USB Drivers are a lot of numbered / named subfolders.
Which should I choose ?

In KIES folder Install USB driver .
jje
Thanks, now Windows 7 recognizes the driver and is properly installed.
Then I started the real thing with Odin.
I started Odin, restarted the Galaxy in download mode, connected the USB port and let windows choose the USB , but did see nothing in the Odin screen it was connected. I did dot try further and did not flash as I was not sure whether it is really connected.
I do not see any yellow part of the window.
The phone says 'Downloading...' while I did not start.
So I pulled the battery and restarted the phone in normal mode, so I can just do another try.
Here a screenshot with the phone pluggen in in download mode:

}
And this is what Windows shows when Galaxy is connected in 'normal' mode:
That is *not* shown when in dowload mode, very weird.
Device not connected if no yellow block at ID.Com
Turn phone off .
Reboot PC.
Start PC start Phone go to wireless in settings /USB connect usb connect Samsung usb cable and let windows find drivers exit and follow instructions to download mode .
That fails turn on or if its on off USB debugging in settings applications development .
Make sure you follow the instructions on the phones download screen .

[Q] Problem installing: Samsung Mobile MTP Device

My I9100G was connecting to PC fine, but then for some reason, it stopped connecting to Kies, and even stopped being seen as a mass storage media! WinXP SP3 says problem occurred while installing Samsung mobile MTP Device and that's it! Here is a photo:

I have checked threads about this matter on this forum and other fora, and nothing seems to be working:
I have completely uninstalled Kies and its drivers, installed WMP11, updated .NET Framework, then reinstalled Kies, connected using debug mode, then normal mode, made connection troubleshooting and it still didn't work! It's very frustrating!
Thank you.
what rom you got on?

The possibility is that the samsung drivers you have in the PC is not updated. Download the updated Samsung Drivers online - you can use google to search for it - including KIES. This should solve your problem

It's:
2.3.6
Baseband: I9100GXXKL4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.JPLC1
My build number has a problem with doomlord's kit. I don't wanna lose warranty. I am going easy on flashing.

Depending on your skills Microsoft's Media Transfer Protocol Porting Kit could help you debugging the problem. Furthermore the error you are experiencing does not seem specific to Samsung devices. Therefor chances are good you get help if you post your problem in one of the many forums run by Microsoft (if you did not already do so). However you will have to do some research to find the right forum, don't ask me please

Yes, looks like.
I do not really understand your question: didn't you try to connect your phone to some other Windows system ? Only then you are able to tell if your problem is related to the phone or the host system or both.
Before debugging with the Media Transfer Protocol Porting Kit you should definitely have done the following things:
use another USB cable
use another USB port (no port on hub)
connect phone to another Windows system

I have done everything you can imagine! I even installed the omap4430 drivers! The only thing I didn't try is black magic! And what's making me suspect what you are saying its that this happened after some windows updates and installs and reinstalls. I will reinstall a clean version anyway and change the hard dusk because it's having troubles. So I guess it's that.

Problem Connecting To PC

Hey everyone,
Ever since updating to "14.1.B.2.257" i can't connect my Xperia Z Ultra (C6802) to my PC. i've tried a lot of things such as reinstalling the drivers, installing and activating ADB etc. But everywhere i look, it's been mentioned that a msg should prompt on my device (the RSA Authentication):
{

the problem is that i've installed functioning drivers AND the PC recognizes my internal storage and SD card; the only problem is that i can't connect to third party softwares in order to backup or manage my phone via them BECAUSE there is no pop-up msg asking me to authorize the "fingerprint" of my pc :|
i'm very well frustrated having worked on this matter for about 10-12 hours  so any help would be immensely appreciated!
That is odd. Since you didn't specifically mention it, i couldn't resist confirming: you did enable usb debugging in the developer settings?
So this did work before? How did you update to .257? I hope you get it working, i know how annoying this can be!
Hmm, mine usually connects the second i enable USB debugging. If you're sick and tired of it and don't want to fiddle with it right now but you want to move/remove files and stuff to/from your device, i recommend AirDroid. Just open the app and your browser on you computer and you're ready to go (you have to be connected to the same WiFi as your computer).
Change your usb connection mode to MSC Mass storage mode instead of MTP Media transfer mode. That should do it.

thanks, rest assured that i'm well aware that "usb debugging" is enabled i even tried GIVING UP developer rights and then again recaliming it just as a possible solution (but nope, undoable without serious phone-hauling)
i up'ed it to .2.257 using the OTA method, i think the whole thing might be due to the fact that my device isn't rooted :/ don't ask me why cuz i'm very pissed at Sony for its lacking of such things. (.2.257 can't be rooted yet, not even with vRoot)

Thanks for replying Sunday, but that's another odd thing: i can't seem to change the connection mode from "Internal & SD Card Connected" to anything else, cuz i did hypothesize that changing it to any other form of connection might have a chance at prompting the "RSA Fingerprint" msg  but i simply can't change it to anything else, again, might be due to the fact that my device isn't rooted

Problem with USB / PC connect

I have a problem with S9 + (org ROM).
The phone normally charges via a USB cable, while connecting to a computer does not recognize it.
After connecting the USB, the phone only charges and does not send data ....
I tried on 4 cables and 2 different computers .. just the same ... I wonder if any program does not bother USB or maybe something in the options I changed
I checked USB debugging, USB mode (MTM data transfer mode). ... and in spite of everything the problem occurs
Is a damaged USB port? ?
The beam only appears "landing using a cable" << it is not possible to expand the USB connection option
I have uninstalled drivers

Have you updated and configured Bixby? That seems to be needed to connect to the PC. See my reply to the later thread about being unable to connect to PC by USB.
Hope this helps.
how can I config Bixby ? -I can't find your thread
Bixby is the first home screen, it'll ask a bunch of questions to get started.
The thread is USB Device not recognized by Labeled.
My usb port got real flakey. Would not fast charge on cable but would wirelessly. When cable connected to Android Auto was always getting device not recognized error. I took it back to tmobile and warranty exchanged it for another. The new one works great.

I have this problem too, but after a while I realised that if I connect to a computer with a USB-C to USB-C cable, the computer would recognise my phone and vice versa. Android auto would work with some cars, the one tested being an 2017 Hyundai Elantra. I'm not sure why this problem occurs though.
