I honestly LOVE the form factor of the Z3 Tablet Compact. I have always got mixed reviews about the N9. But do you guys think Z3 Tablet Compact is better in these departments:
Resolution - Which one would be higher PPI of the two?
Usability - Shouldn't be awkward to hold etc
Multimedia Consumption - The basics like YouTube OR FB
Memory Management - Know Android, lags are common. But do you think Z3 Tablet Compact does anything and everything thrown at it with ease compared to the N9?
Thanks!

When I decided between the Z3 tablet and nexus 9 I picked the Z3 tablet because of the form factor, SD card slot, water resistance and because of all the issues reported with earlier batches of the nexus and I could not be happier with my decision.
Regarding your specific questions:
While the nexus does have a higher resolution display it is also much larger and so the PPI is pretty much the same (283 for the Z3 vs. 281 for the nexus)
Form factor is a matter of preference but I found the nexus a bit too big and heavy when compared to the smaller and much lighter Z3 which I find is pretty easy to hold and use. But again this is a matter of preference and it looks like you already like the Z3 tablet's form factor.
For media consumption they should both be fine however the nexus would probably have an advantage in web browsing and such due to the larger display but the Z3 tablet would be better for videos since it has a 16:10 aspect ratio.
The processor in the nexus is more powerful but it has less ram (2GB vs. 3GB) than the Z3 tablet. Personally I have had no issues with memory management or performance on the Z3 tablet with both the stock marshmallow and unofficial nougat roms available and the tablet still feels quite fast.
The only thing you might want to consider about the nexus is that it has software that is much closer to stock android than the Z3 and that it has official nougat but even then the stock Sony firmware is very close to stock and the nougat roms available are pretty much issue free.
i haven't tryied nexus 9 but the only thing i know is the fact that u won't even beeb able to find a single negative to z3T!for me the first thing i see is battery life.here u csn easily get 10 hours of SOT!as regards to firmware,u can flash a deticated bloatware script (KK,LP don't know on MM) and u'll have a flying tablet.the LED has many colours,u have fm radio, quick charge,dusf-water proof, dual speakers,etc,etc...i am really in love with this thing.my opinion is first for u to consider the ideal size that u like and then go for a comparisson!personally for me Z3T is the best tablet overall that has been ever made.i wish i helped u!

Firstly, BIG thanks to both of you.
I have heard quite a bit of issues about the N9. Lot of software glitches even with the stock Android. I am more or less final with the Z3CT. Thanks a LOT!
congrats and welcome to this superlovely beloved masterpiece tablet!
I had a Nexus 9 LTE tablet for 1 week before i decided to buy a Z3 Compact Tablet.
The Nexus was a very bad choice. The battery time was awful 5 and half SOT with Chrome, youtube, facebook and G+ in 1 single day, max 2... The Nexus like a radiator, warm up very quickly if i used Chrome. Terrible tablet with the original rom :crying: and lagging, the multitask was horrible.
The Z3 tablet is working like a charm. 4-5 days usage i have 6-7 hour screen on time. The 3GB ram is much better multitasking experience.

So I have an Asus Infinity at the moment. Not very happy with it as it lags terribly and its user experience isn't great (vastyl improved with CleamRom but still not seemless).
I'm thinking of replacing the TF700 with a Nexus 10 or a Sony Tablet Z when its out towards the end of May. Ideally I'd have a tablet with a microSD card but for the £100 (+) differential over the tablet Z I may be able to live with this.
Anyone else thinking about either of these tablets? Any other thoughts or comments?

I have the Nexus 10 and i'm really happy with it. Once I saw the weight and how thin it is, I liked it. However, the price, the angle of the screen, the battery (6000 mah and nexus 10 has 9000), and also the long time that sony takes to upgrade the android, made me not care about this tablet.
@OP: in the exact same boat.
the TF700 has gotten worse over time, despite CleanROM, Brower2RAM, other tweaks — or perhaps my tolerance for a $500 tablet performing like crap has finally diminished to the point where i'm just can't take it anymore.
Tablet Z sounds great, but like IKBZI has stated, the puny battery could definitely be an issue. also viewing angles on the phone Z has been pretty crap, just hope that the tablet is better. microSD is a plus though. the premium price you pay for a Sony irks me though, especially when it's not even running the latest OS version.
that said, i think the Nexus 10 is also a contender because of the front-facing speakers and that massive resolution. i already have a tablet with 1920 x 1200 resolution, you know? however, the colour gamut sucks and maybe there isn't enough horsepower to push all those pixels consistently (based on various reports of lag, etc. -- i know there are plenty happy about it though). plus having to pay extra for a pogo charger, and still have slow charge times, etc.
i'm waiting to see how the Z turns out in reviews, but also eagerly awaiting news of a what a next-gen Nexus 10 might look like.

The Nexus 10 has issues from thermal throttling that cause lag on the stock kernel. Get a custom kernel and your issues will go away. And especially KTManta with its massive GPU overclock you can get great gaming performance on the Nexus 10.
Personally I would choose the Nexus 10 over a Sony tablet because I like the more active development of Nexus devices and how easy they are to mod, and get the latest versions of Android always.
N10, of course... Development matters...

Buy a tablet Z now, and pretty soon you'll suffer from key lime pie envy. I don't want to buy a new tablet every year just to be able to keep up with the second newest version of android.

The next Gen Nexus 10 won't be out for a good long time though (>6 months)? The N10 looks great, however, the lack of 3G and microSD are putting me off. I could live with one, but both will be tricky.
One has to wander why it is so difficult to make an Android tablet with an HD screen, microSD, 3G and a decent battery!
I prefer to the Nexus 10 because I like the pure Android and the timely update. As for the sd card, I can find some other ways to expand the storage of Nexus 10.

No. Sony is pretty supportive of the dev community right now. I would say that the Tablet Z will get Android 5.0 almost as soon as the Nexus devices.
The decision between these tablets should be based on how much you want to spend for better looks, water resistance and all those details...
About the SD card thing: I use OTG and I don't feel too uncomfortable with it. It could be better, but that is criticism on a high level. The Nexus 10 is worth every penny.

I'm glad Sony is being supportive of the dev community but I think you'll be waiting a bit for a 5.0 update. You'll get something un-official long before something from Sony and that will still be a bit after the Nexus devices get it.
You might want to play with the Z at a Sony store if there is one near you.
The N10 is my favorite Android device. Aside from it being a Nexus and all that comes with that, the great performance, the stunning screen, I just really love the physical design, from the look/shape/feel/color, the speakers on the front to the soft touch material on the back. Reminds of the Nexus S that I also loved. Big pat on the back to the industrial design guys/gals that worked on this tablet.
the design of sony tablet z is very appealing to me, but i am really into ultra hi-res displays and the rubber of nexus 10 is quite a pleasure to hold in your hands

intriguing! thanks for the info ...
got me reading a bit about KTManta. came across the odd comment that says it affects the colours/gamut positively. anyone have info/data/screens of that? asking because there doesn't appear to be any specific settings in KTweakerT that you can change to affect colour.
if that screen was a bit closer to sRGB, i'd jump on it.

There are no settings as it is not user adjustable. There is no color control at all for any kernels or ROMs on this tablet yet, and there may never be for all we know. There are color tweaks in the KTmanta kernel that bring the RGB values much closer to what they should be, however the blue color is still very far off. These minor tweaks to the colorspace are hard coded into the kernel.

Engadget says that the sony xperia tablet z is that thin that when you do a little pression on the screen, you will see the same that happened on the old screens, when you used your finger to press the screen.
Not sure how to describe it, but I mean, when on an old screen you made pression with your finger, you could see some kind of "bubble" on it.

I personally would never buy any of the Nexus tablets. The bezel is entirely too wide. I am looking for a 10.1 inch screen , jellybean , 32G storage and 2 GB of Ram. Wifi only . The Sony Xperia Z looks good .. It has nice thin bezels. And the specs are good.
Hello fellow friends,
I have been looking for a tablet for myself for a really long time, comparing devices and researching them. I was considering even Shield tablet but I was able to hold it in hands and poor construction does not appeal to me (also there are many posts about screen/wifi/overheating and software issues).
So I looked for more. And here comes the Nexus 9. But also there is Sony Xperia Compact Z3.
Nexus seems better because of tegra and being a 64 bit processor but Xperia has 3 GB RAM and microsd slot, also is cheaper. (comparing LTE versions, Xperia has 16GB storage, but with microsd it does not matter).
I would like to run emulators for my games, use it very much, watching movies everyday on it doing pretty much everything and I would like it to last minimum of 3 years. It would be no problem for me to use UTG and 250 HDD with Nexus but is it worth it? I think Nexus as a device would last longer but at the same time Xperia has more features I want (without doing additional things) but I had poor experience in past with Sony. I just can not decide.
And, if I were to use HDD with Nexus 9, how would work installing apps on external drive? I mean software/games I would rarely use and would not work in background, is it possible?
Thank you for every input because I am stuck right now. OR maybe it would be wiser to wait for newer tablets?
Henrich
One additional thing in favor of Xperia Z3-C tablet over Nexus 9 is the physical size (I'm getting the Nexus 9 by the way, because of the stock android thing, but boy did I struggle with my decision because for me size and weight are huge factors).
Edit: Sony is awful with names.

I have the Z3TC but it most likely going back as i dont really li!e the UI as it looks stupid with the blown up icons on that screen size. Waiting on a White Nex 9 hopefulky will arrive tomorrow so i can compare. Might have to stray back to Ipad Land though as i need a decent keyboard and the Nex 9 on is way to pricey and no backlight ?
Sony had an encrypted partition on it's devices and you will lose the decryption keys when you root it. Thereby losing some sound and camera enhancements that you can't get back with custom ROMs. It sounds not good unless you don't care about custom ROMs.
Hi!
I have currently nexus 7 (2012) tablet and I've been thinking of updating it with 10" tablet. One of the greatest tablets on paper is xperia z2 tablet but there are couple things that make me think about some other device (nexus 9 or some samsung tablets). That is custom software support.. I've been using cm for a long time on my devices and luckly z2 has official cm12 support. My concern is however how stable is the device tree of z2 and recovery support seems to be everything else but good. No TWRP, not even unofficial as far as I can see. Otherwise sony's tablet seems to be hardwarewise device and that's why I'm seriusly thinking of buying one. If someone could recommend/not recommend this tablet to me or give me any other information about the device I'd appreciate it a lot!
Regards,
rockknee
I have both Nexus 7's a Nexus 9 and a tablet Z2.
Paid about the same for N9 and tab Z2, about $400 new.
N9 is heavy and thick compared to Z2 tab, but may have more CPU power. I don't use them much except for app testing and light reading.
I much prefer the Z2 tab to the N9 due to lighter, thinner and FM radio.
Tab Z2 (and Sony in general) development is low.
But N9 is a relatively unpopular Nexus too...
As long as you're aware you're getting last generation cpu/graphics (which BTW snapdragon 801 is still plenty fast), its still a great tablet.
- Thin and light
- Great build
- Snappy
- Relatively clean / close-to-stock software build, the tweaks actually add value/functionality and improve on stock (quick settings toggles, stamina mode, mount windows shares etc.)
- SD card
- No complaints on the screen whatsoever. Sure its 'only' 1080p but I can't see the pixels so I don't care
- Software buttons means its actually usable when rotated in whatever orientation you use. I know some samsung owners who really regret their purchases because they like to use their tablets one way, and samsung has hard buttons the other way
As long as the price reflects the fact it came out a year ago, its still a good choice.
Yeah dev is dead but
- there's nothing wrong with stock at all. I've been flashing since Nexus One and I've had zero inclination to custom this.
- we're definitely getting official lollipop shortly
- BL unlock is officially available if you want CWM/TWRP anyway. (look harder in the dev forums... defo CWM/TWRP available)
so nothing to see here IMO

Thanks for these opinions and experiences guys! I really feel like xperia z2 might be better device for me due to it's larger screen compared to nexus 9 and the ratio is also much better for watching movies and so on. Now that I've been testing the device on couple stores I've noticed that the screen responsiveness is far from best. Could be also just problem on some z2 tablets and caused by people "giving hard time" for these test models at the stores.. Have you noticed touchscreen problems? I mean one device was absolutely ****ed up on one of the stores I visited, even scrolling thru homescreens was very painful and didn't leave very good impression at all.
Regards,

none on mine, doesn't miss a beat.
There were people here talking re: bad touchscreen when it was first released, but I believe it got ironed out with later firmware / later batches
Running it with CM12 and i love my Z2 Castor Windy.
Z2 is now on the way! I found nice sale from one Finnish store, approximately 394$ price and 32gb model. I think it was a great deal, can't wait to get my hands on it! Thanks guys!
Hi
I'm thinking about buying this phone, but... with some special details. and I wanted your opinion.
I'm not really looking for a phone, I'm looking to replace my nexus 7 GSM (2012) tablet.
It cannot be something bigger than the N7 (in physical dimensions), it must have 3g connectivity and it has to be an upgrade (better specs).
These requests pretty much clean all the tablets, as only the 7'' and (some) 8'' are small enough and only very few have 3g or 4g.
So I thought of a phablet, and the Z ultra appeared on the search.
I know the screen is smaller, but I don't expect that difference to be a problem. I'll try to find other big phones in a store to compare.
I have a Z1 compact as a phone, and from the looks of it, the Z ultra is exactly the same, only with a bigger screen and battery.
This means the same rom support (cyanogenmod), the same performance (I'm very happy with the Z1 compact on that) and bigger battery and screen for movies and games.
So, am I right, do you think this is a good choice for me?
you can go with the xperia z3 compact tablet as well, that tablet has a sim card slot.
Currently I use it as LTE tablet and it works fine.

I didn't even know it existed...
It's bigger (yet not too big), faster, has more battery, full CM support... It's also more expensive, but maybe it's worth it.
Thanks! I'll really consider it.
Just to let you know, my ZU hasn't served me that well as a tablet, because 1) the touch panel mis-registers under multi-touch situations, 2) the speaker produces constant buzzing sound and 3) battery life is mediocre for real.
I have a TabPRO 8.4 WiFi, but this thing also has 3G and LTE variants. It might be a bit too big to your taste, but aside from the looks, this tablet is the best I've had my hands on.

Surprisingly, it's not too big (but it's close to).
Here the biggest problem is the price, the LTE variant is a lot more expensive than the Z ultra or the Z3 tablet compact already mentioned here.
Anyway, thanks for the opinion, the battery life was a concern for me, and it seems it is a problem.
Actually, after that last suggestion I re-checked the prices... and both the tablets presented are much more expensive than the Z ultra...
Even with the spec difference and the possible battery problem, it's still the one I think I'll choose.

Strange, TabPRO 8.4 retails for about the same price as Z3TC here. Also, most of my devices are bought second-hand, and in the cases of ZU and TabPRO, they cost me ~$125 and ~$190 respectively, while Z3TC can go up to $250+ (yes, used - absurdly pricey).
To me the extra price made quite a difference - aside from the looks, TabPRO gives me a much more comfortable tablet experience and fits snugly in my small carry bag.
There are indeed very few devices in the price range of ZU that can match its specs and screen, and for that it is a unicorn I don't actually want to let go of... But the small problems mentioned in the last post proved more than annoying for me. YMMV, as always.

You should compare Z Ultra with 7" LTE tablet like Nexus 7 or Asus ME572CL.
CPU is far superior.
Nexus 7 does not support memory card (ZU can take 128GB)
ME572CL has locked (not unlockable) bootloader
Don't forget Z Ultra can be used as phone when needed.
Xperia Z Ultra is great in terms of build quality and speed.
But if you are looking into alternatives, if you just want tablet (not phone) you may look at Asus or Lenovo line of products.
Also, you may look at Motorola Nexus 6. Now that new Nexus phones are announced previous Nexus prices are dropping. It is a great phone, large screen, and with the Android 6.0 it works better than before (according to several user feedbacks).
Good Luck!

i well buy it with second hands.
For me it's a really good bargain for its price.
Good hardware, & a lot of devs, -> incredible rom choice
Last OOS 3 are good too.
For battery life, depends on usage.

Unless you're getting it at a really cheap price, I'd suggest you look at something newer. The SD801 is full 2 generations old. There's most probably going to be at least some noticeable performance difference even with the current gen mid-range offerings with SD650/652 (all other factors like skinned UI, bloat, etc. being equal).
Plus Nougat has already been released, but no SD800/801 device will be getting it; they can only go upto MM. So OOS 3 is officially the end of the line for this device.
Having said that, I'm plenty satisfied with the device personally.
So you'll have to weigh what would be better for you

There's most probably going to be at least some noticeable performance difference even with the current gen mid-range offerings with SD650/652 (all other factors like skinned UI, bloat, etc. being equal).
Plus Nougat has already been released, but no SD800/801 device will be getting it; they can only go upto MM. So OOS 3 is officially the end of the line for this device.
Having said that, I'm plenty satisfied with the device personally.
So you'll have to weigh what would be better for you

The only area where the other phones you've listed surpass the OPX is the camera. And the screen size to a small extent, in case of the 5.2" Xperia Z2. Other than that, OPX should be good.

what about battery life i'm gamer specially the game with 60fps; in the test of gsmarena the battery life is really bad (54 hrs) before i have z3 compact (101 hrs) and he's nice so the battery life on OPX is bad is that true? and i don't like the biggest size like z2 1+1 and i hope the OPX is good in one hand

I find the OPX pretty comfortable to use with just one hand. And battery averages around 5hrs SOT for me, but I don't play games, so it may vary for you. My usage includes watching a lot of videos, and quite a lot of browsing.

I love my OPX! Sexy AF. I'm actually on the lookout for a second one. LMK if you find one for a decent price
I don't have huge hands, so this size of device is perfect for me. I like the fact that OnePlus caters to rooting and custom ROM's because I like to tinker.
- Battery: I was a little off-put by the battery life at first, but then I realized it was the OOS ROM. I moved to RR, and now I get over well over a day without having to charge. When its less than that, I know its some app messing with my life.
- ROM: go with CM13
- Camera: use Sultans HAL mod; I've never had any complaints with the picture or video quality
- Multitasking: the 3 GB RAM has always been more than enough for me
- OTG: a bit finicky, but it may have been the native app or my adapter. I use MiXplorer now and it works a charm
- I love the display. I have DPI set at 400 and black theme everywhere.
Other points:
- wireless charging would be nice, but for the price I'm not complaining!
- the tri-state notifications button is pretty useful.
IMHO this phone is by far the best in its class - I have owned a lot of phones. Now when I find myself considering a new phone, I compare it to my OPX and it doesn't come close.
I've had a few mishaps with it; but always been able to repair it.
cheers!
