Hello,
I'm having an odd issue with Remix OS for PC, and wanted to see if anyone else experienced this and hopefully found a resolution. Please see the bottom of the thread for info on my PC setup. My laptop is definitely more than powerful enough to handle remix, and it used to run fine, but now I seem to have the following issues after not booting into Remix for a while:
***Wifi does not automatically connect, it only connects if I click the wifi icon in the tray (then it connects to my network automatically)
***Nearly all apps will not open, including the Settings app. I'll click on an icon on the desktop, and the icon lights up, registering my click, but the app never opens and the icon stays lit as if something froze. However, I can still "swipe" from the left desktop to the right one, and vice versa.
***When attempting to install an app (Eventually, without any rhyme or reason that I've noticed, I can open the Play Store and maybe the settings app), the app hangs on Installing after it downloads. I've tried waiting a good 20 minutes, but I know the apps install much quicker on this laptop, and I've tried this with small apps.
***Similarly to the above, clicking the Remix OS menu button does nothing as well.
With those symptoms in mind, it seems like there's something holding the system back, but the actual GUI performance is fine. For example, there's no lag or hesitation when an app finally eventually opens or when I click around through the Settings app (when it finally opens). It doesn't seem to only be with graphic intensive apps either, as I tried a simple text/memo app and when that one eventually opens, the desktop background is black and the app window is black with only a menu near the top.
My attempts to fix it
So far, I've tried running an e2fsck -f data.img command to repair the data.img file. It didn't appear to report any issues and the problem did not go away. I've rebooted the thing about a billion times, no luck! Getting into the Settings app is hit or miss and I haven't really had any idea of what setting might help, and installing third party apps appears to not be an option either.
The only other option I could think of would be to backup my data.img and reinstall the OS, and then restore the data.img file, but this seems like it will restore the problem with it. Also, I haven't experienced any problems in Windows, so I don't think there is any issue with the drive. Sorry for such a long thread, just wanted to be detailed!
Any ideas are much appreciated!
My PC: Lenovo Ideapad y510p
Windows OS: Windows 10 64-Bit
Remix OS for PC: 3.0.207 dual booted with the above Windows 10 installation
Hard Drive: 500GB SSD drive
RAM: 16GB
I don't have any of those issues. My issues are a bit different...
I can't seem to find a copy of RemixOS 3.xx that actually has "true" root access. I know there is a method you can use to remount the volume as r/w, but since I am running it from a flash drive, I apparently cannot access any of the system files in Windows with hidden files and folders visible. And, after first boot the USB drive running the OS will somehow end up with a corrupted "REMIXOSDATA" partition.
Good luck on your quest.

Thank you for the response! In reading the issue you're having, I'm wondering Remix OS for PC, in its current state, is more susceptible to corruption issues in under some circumstances rather than others. When I first installed it, I installed the 64-bit version and I kept having issues where I'd boot it up and it suddenly would not start. I found somewhere on a forum where someone recommended to just use the 32-bit version and the issue went away for a long time, until I had the issue described in my original post. I'm wondering if it just isn't stable enough yet to be run from a flash drive, as it seems to me like it has issues with being easily corrupted.
This brings me to my next comment, I was able to fix my issue! I tried a couple things that didn't work, reinstalling Remix and then choosing YES to erase the entire virtual drive, then copying a backup of my original data.img back into the directory so I don't have to reinstall everything. This didn't fix the issue, so instead I downloaded the 64-bit version and installed it, but this time I chose NO on the prompt to erase my data.
Upon booting into Remix, it gave the standard Android message about optimizing apps and is now running good. I wish I did this workflow with the 32-bit version, as I'm wondering if it would have worked. I suspect I'll experience the same issues I originally experienced with the 64-bit version.
Anyway, I hope this may shed any light on how you can try to resolve your issue. Good luck!

Hi,
This is one of those crazy days in which questions keeps popping up, and so I create my second thread. :/ Anyways ...
For starters I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus with ICS 4.0.4, and my computer is an Apple MacBook with Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I was about to go to bed, and wanted to transfer some new wallpapers to my phone via the USB cable. I got error messages when I tried to transfer the files, and noticed that an unrecognized corrupt file appeared when I replugged my phone (several times). After a few retries I decided to restart my Nexus and try again. However, after I had restarted, I observed that my Wallpaper folder (with all my wallpapers) was gone.
It's not a big issue, as they're only wallpapers. However, it might happen again with something more critical, and I'd like to figure this out. I'm an avid Linux user for years, using Gentoo Linux as my main operating system. So I don't mind getting down and dirty, if that's necessary.
My first thought is that it still might be on the partition / SD card / whatever the Nexus has, and I might retrieve it by going down on the file system via adb and fs-tools; if that's even possible.
Any input on how I'm to solve this is greatly appreciated.
Here's a follow up:
Doing anything with ADB was of course limited by the tools I had installed on the device, which gave me almost nothing. Except I could confirm that the folder was definitely not visible (or hidden). Additionally I checked the summed size of /sdcard up against what the system is reporting, and there's about 375 MB which is accounted for but invisible. :'(
I am trying to sideload cyanogen mod. Whenever I boot the phone into TWRP, Windows 7 (64 bit) tries to install MTB USB Device drivers and fails.
Driver Software Installation:
Device driver software was not successfully installed
Please consult with your device manufacturer for
assitance getting this device installed.
MTB USB Device X Failed
I already uninstalled Android SDK Tools and re-installed, making sure that Google USB Drivers are installed. I also installed Motorola drivers, but that was at the start of my journey and I didn't take notes on the details.
I have no problems accessing the phone via USB when the phone is booted up normally. I also have no problems using fastboot when the phone is is bootloader mode.
I originally tried a number of ways to use CWM instead of TWRP, but was unsuccessful. I've posted those efforts in this forum and abandoned CWM after a while.
Has anyone who owns a Moto G actually been able to install CWM or install CyanogenMod using TWRP? I want to use adb rather than non-mainstream tools, and I'm not interested in rooting at the moment (though rooters are more likely to be familiar with issues at this level).
From further web search, this is the last news that I can find about MTP USB drivers when booted up in TWRP: <<erroneous URL removed (I can't re-find the correct webpage)>>
I'll continue sleuthing a bit more before looking at how to install cyanogenMode without sideload. But for now, it seems that the MTP issue remains (though I admit, I'm new to the whole smartphone thing and I could be wrong about that).
Afternote: I chose sideload so that I wouldn't have to worry about where the cyanogenMod zip file goes. From using adb shell to "ls" around, it seemed a bit confusing, and it wasn't obvious how the directory structure from "ls"ing around matched the 5-7 partitions that are on most Android file systems. In fact, entire subtrees seemed to repeat themselves at different parts of the tree.
I followed a suggestion on another forum and used the push method. I followed wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_falcon. I found that I needed to bookend sdcard with slashes: "/sdcard/".
I am now facing the (apparently commonplace) problem of being in an endless loop with the popup "Unfortunately, the process com.android.systemui has stopped. [OK]". I'm one step further, though. There seem to be many causes for this problem, with varying degrees of similarity in the symptom. I've not yet run across a case with exactly the same symptom, where the loop occurs at the language selection screen. Of the various circumstances that I've read about, the one that seems that it might be most relevant is the association of this error with an Italian keyboard app. In my case, the English (Canada) language seems to be selected, if I'm interpretting the graphics properly. I will try replacing the keyboard apk with one from a nightly. New territory.
The other causes are flipboard app, ART vs. Dalvik, and possibly a few others.
Someone suggested that I might try clearing data and cache on Google Play Framework. I googled how-to-clear-data-and-cache-on-Google-Play-Framework, and read www.androidpit.com/google-play-not-working. It seems that you have to be able to get the OS working before you can actually clear those Google Play data. I haven't been able to get beyond the language screen. I can't access the device via adb, either.
Afternote: I was able to press Next a few times in between the error message popups, and I got the the home screen. The devices shows as XT1032 in the Windows Explorer, but there's nothing in that "folder".
Update: I don't have any app beginning with the word "Google", so it seems that none of the above measures having to do with Google Play apply in my case. I suspect that this may be because I'm working with a virgin install of CyanogenMod. Looks like I'm still on search for a way ahead. I also tried switching the language from English (Canada) to English (US), based on the info I found online that the problem was due to a keyboard apk. No joy.....
Update: Another user had the same problem and solved it by reverting to CM 10 (www.reddit.com/r/cyanogenmod/comments/2gvmqu/cm11moto_g_comandroidsystemui_is_crashing_after). Looks like I have a way ahead.
Hi
Anyone successfully encrypted their remix os?
Mine just reboots to the os
I have the same issue, I think, when I click on Encrypt from within the Remix OS setting it just does a sort of reboot (quicker than a standard reboot, that is) and drops me back at the front pin screen.
Did you get anywhere with resolving this issue?
I am dual booting with Windows 10 (bitlocker encrypted). Both are installed on the internal SSD of my laptop. It is a GUID type partition with UEFI type BIOS.
The method I used to install (I didn't explore others as this seemed simple) was to unpack the Remix OS download from within Windows, create a FAT32 partition and copy to the new partition. I then used EasyUEFI to point at the relevant file to boot in /efi/boot.
The only other thing that I needed to do was to modify the persistant GRUB entry so that it would create a datafile, otherwise it basically ran in guest mode regardless of which option I selected.
It's been working well for a few weeks since initial install.
Thoughts or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
All the best,
Dan
Please excuse the gratuitous bump, but I would really appreciate if someone could post if they have sucessfully encrypted their Remix OS installation? And if any special steps were necessary?
Thanks
Dan
In the absence of a solution - some help in how to debug this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry to bump this thread again - but has anyone successfully encrypted their Remix OS install?
Same here
Just to let you know - you're not the only ones. Currently my new RemixOS installation is failing to encrypt - I've installed it onto a USB stick and it fails both under Virtualbox and when booted directly from hardware.
From looking online for similar issues with Android in general they appear to be related to hardware settings like being connected to a wireless network, having an SD card in use, or not being in landscape - not I'm not sure how to fix this with Remix OS. Also I think all those issues refer to old versions of Android.
I'd be interested to hear if either of you fixed this problem, or on any tips on even how to get logs ( "logcat" appears to only show logs since the last boot, so isn't any use here ).
So this is an old thread, im hoping to get someone to answer these guys and my question. Can Remix OS be encrypted?
when choosing to encrypt it just does a soft reboot. im trying to use my laptop for corporate byod but the device had to be un-rooted and encryptable. so far i fixed the root but its still a no go on encryption. if not, is there an android os i can use on pc that is encryptable ?
Hi XDA community, since I don't have enough power to land this on other forums I choose here.
First, this is my disclaimer:
Please try this at home at your own risk, the steps performed on this guide worked for me and may work for you.

But come on, this is XDA, you will figure it out without problems.:fingers-crossed:
Second, the good thing about this is you only need 3 ingredients:
Old tablet, The HP Stream 7 tablet SPECS
Precious Disk Space :victory:
Sweet Internet
W00t? no USB or Keyboard required? Yes, that's why it took me a while to glue the pieces together. Now, here we go:
I suggest to download PhoenixOS (November Release v1.1.2-226), because it worked for me immediately, I have an issue with RemixOS that I didn't try to fix it yet, I got stuck on the "Select Language" screen, but the steps may work for you.
Now, free disk space on your tablet, I did the upgrade to Windows 10 a while back and I had almost 1GB left on C, that's ridiculous because the drive has 20GB-ish, so, I google (yes, you need to do your homework too because I did the steps on the fly) how to recover space from the greedy Windows 10 OS, I removed a lot of useless info/cache/downloads/apps/etc and even compressed the Windows binaries (yes, you can do that). Concerned about Windows performance? be not, it works faster than ever. After the next steps this may seem useless but free space is free space, you'll need it later on life.
After all that dark magic, I was able to reclaim 10GB-ish, yeah!, but then realized I had 8GB more on the tablet "lost", this is the recovery partition for Windows 10, now, this is something that you may think of because you can get rid of all that info and reclaim what is yours, that partition is for you, but maybe you wont so this is one of these life choices. I did, I don't care about recovery stuff, most of my gadgets have custom ROMs or OSes. Used Minitool Partition Wizard Free and managed to reclaim the precious Disk Space.
Important thing here, some users Shrink the drive C to create a new partition, I didn't, used the 8GB partition instead.
We have Disk Space available, now, we prepare the operations table:
Disable Bitlocker on the drive you want to install the new OS.
Disable Secure Boot, power off the device and press Power+VolDown for a few seconds until you're on the BIOS.
Boot on Windows and install the Android OS flavor you want, I'll split the installation in two because for RemixOS is harder.
NOTE: Remember that grub doesn't support touch and both Android OSes grub have Windows as first OS to boot and kids, there is the key.
PhoenixOS
Download the OS
Extract it and run the installer
Select install to Hard Drive and install it on the Drive desired (I did that on E: which is the 8GB partition).
Restart and let the system do the job, you'll land on Windows again.
In Windows, as you read on the NOTE, we need to change grub.
Open Windows Powershell ISE in Admin mode (yeah yeah, yo can use whatever you want)
Then execute the command
Code:
mountvol B: /s
With this you'll be able to see the contents from the UEFI partition
Now, remember to select view all files, with WPISE open the grub.cfg file located on
Code:
B:\EFI\PhoenixOS\
Put the Windows entry below the PhoenixOS entry, change the grub timeout to 3 or whatever timeout you want, this change is for faster boot, save the file and you're ready to go.
Restart the system, press Power+VolDown -> F9, Select the PhoenixOS, let grub do the magic and you win
Notes about PhoenixOS
Phoenix OS installation, straight-forward on the 8GB partition
Needed to change Grub but friendlier than RemixOS
Keyboard behaves weird, you need to be accurate when using your fingers
When using browser and playing videos the tablet heats up hard
Rotation is wrong, I selected not to use rotation so I can use the UI without problems
Is fast, Wireless work
Something I saw one time is it got stuck when showing my user recently booted, restarted the device and then it worked again.
Video after the break.
Veredict: It works for me and can play with Android in a tablet without the need to buy another.
RemixOS
It supposed to have more support for things but looks like PhoenixOS has more . Not going to start a war here, I always try to find what suits best for me .
RemixOS is a pain on this tablet with the newest November 2016 version, I need to play more and harder.
You do almost the same as PhoenixOS, the installer is easy as well but it shows you an installation issue the first time, you need to restart the device and try the installation again. After that it was a game of try and fail but I sorted out the pieces.
Restart and you'll be on Windows again, well, let the system land on Windows and modify grub, kind of same as PhoenixOS:
Open Windows Powershell ISE in Admin mode
Then execute the command
Code:
mountvol B: /s
With this you'll be able to see the contents from the UEFI partition
Now, with WPISE open the grub.cfg file located on
Code:
B:\boot\grub\
Remember to select view all files
Put the Windows entry below the RemixOS entries, save the file, change the timeout and you're ready to go.
For RemixOS you also need to change the timeout for the theme.cfg file on
Code:
B:\EFI\RemixOS\
Restart the system, press Power+VolDown -> F9, Select the OS Bootloader, let grub do the magic (after some errors, just let it be) and you win (see, no hands mom!), well, sort of because it freezes :silly:.
I'll try to do more tests with RemixOS and see what happens.
Is this guide enough for you, not? blame the Internet or leave your comments.
Enjoy.
Thanks for the info.
I'm not getting any sound with PhoenixOS. WiFi is OK but sound & Bluetooth is not functional. Any suggestions ?
I've experimented with RemixOS as well...... sound works but it's very laggy and touch-screen / rotation is unresponsive. PhoenixOS is very stable and far far better but no sound :crying:

Could you please explain the installation instructions?
Any news? I tried newest phoenix, but it´s way too heavy for it. Runs very slow. The older lollipop works better. The touchscreen is more a problem, it´s like a tablet from hell, very bad sensitivity.
The "Trekstor Surftab Xintron i 7.0" should be the same hardware and has android, so there could be a way to install this or at least use the touchscreen drive in phoenix. But I´m afraid of bricking it.
So the other day, for some reasons my partition that I used to install RemixOS on was corrupted, so I had to run chkdsk /f on it. After that I was able to log into RemixOS again, but a problem arised: Play Store would crash out whenever I try to update an app. After a little bit of looking around the internet, the problem seems to be coming from Download Manager malfunctioning. I've tried doing things like clearing cache/data, restarting, etc. but it still doesn't work. So I've come to a conclusion that the Download Manager must be corrupted and couldn't be fixed when chkdsk was running.
What would be the best way of making it work again, without reinstalling, because I want to keep my data safe. Going to external sites just to update your programs gets tedious really fast.

If you can download from external sites, then the Download Manager should fine.
Have you tried updating the Play Store?

No, I can't download on RemixOS anymore, doesn't work on browsers also. I have to download them from Windows and use them in RemixOS.

Ah.
Then in that case, try going into Settings>Applications>Download Manager>Permissions, and try manually disabling and re-enabling all of the permissions (although it should only ask for the Storage permission).
Perhaps the same should be done also with Downloads.

Both have no permission requested.
I compared it with my phone (which is also running Android 6.0) to make sure and both apps also didn't have any permissions, but Play Store on my phone doesn't get the symptoms like on RemixOS, so I think it's definitely a corrupted Download Manager. But I don't know how to reinstall it besides reinstalling RemixOS.

Well, you could try pulling the APKs and odex files from the ISO, mounting /system as RW, replacing the files, mounting /system as RO, clearing cache and dalvik cache, ending with a full reboot.

Hey, just to make sure, do you need Cygwin for this or does it come with the RemixOS installation? I don't know a lot about Linux, and that's a command that I've never heard of - until just now. And after a little bit of googling around I came across Cygwin.
The reason why I ask this is because when I add DEBUG=1 on grub it just shows a bunch of ext3 problems and incompatible something problems - probably because the partition that I installed RemixOS on is NTFS? And the issue is yet to be fixed.
Sorry for being an idiot.
EDIT: Still didn't work after running said command in Windows.

Yea, it's like chkdsk but for ext. The system.img and data.img are ext4. If you are running a recent version on Win10 you should have 'Bash for Windows' type 'bash' in a command prompt to check.

He would first need to enable the developer tools, and then install the system component for that.
Hate to dig up an old thread, but this same exact thing has happened to me on my old Remix OS device, and due to it's special "Tri-Boot" config of Win 10, MacOS, and Remix OS, I'd prefer to keep it installed and repair it than completely re-install everything all over again.
Never saw any replies of a solution, so if anyone found one let me know, otherwise I'll just give up and re-install everything again next week.
