Used N9 - can't connect to the camera bug - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello! A couple of days ago I received an used N9 bought on eBay. First at all, I noticed that the camera was not working showing a pop-up saying Can't connect to the camera, with black screen and nothing more. I get the tablet with Android 6, and to test with a new OS and clean installation, I upgrade to Android 7.1.1 Stock. I want to say that I don't did none modification on OS like a Custom OS, unlock bootloader, etc.
Also, I found this tablet very laggy, and with a extremely battery drain; from 50% to 36% in about 3 hours and WITHOUT any use (neither connection to WiFi), besides I could be exaggerated. Do you know some tips for this? Maybe a fix, a patch.
Best regards!

Now I have LineageOS with root and other stuff, but the camera still not working. The laggy issue was "solved" in a certain way, but it seems like is the encryptation from Nougat.
Also, I dared to disarm the back cover and check the healthy of cameras and I can saw that there never was been touched before, so I don't think that was a hardware issue or disconnection

Actually, I received the tablet with stock marshmallow, then, I charge to 100% and the last update was installed (7.1.1). In marshmallow the camera doesn't worked anyway. But I will try to put it in the Lollipop stock rom, to be sure. But first, I need to know if there is a risk when the tab is downgraded, and is possible, the safest way yo do it
Thanks!!

Yes it's easy. You need adb and fastboot on your PC. The factory image has everything in it. You should just flash the full 7.1.1 image. Lollipop sucks on this tablet. Flashing the full image will likely fix your camera as long as it's not hardware related.
The camera should work fine with the stock system flashed. The camera works fine on all versions (yes marshmallow too). It works on all custom ROMs too. I'm using the latest AICP now and the stock camera (snap from LineageOS) and Google camera work fine. I like Google camera better though because the viewfinder fills the whole screen.

See the difference

Did you format data? Warning that obviously wipes all data. Maybe clear data for camera app first to see if that helps

Yeah, full wipe. I tried clear the cache from app, but didn't worked either. At this moment I'm resigned to use the N9 without the camera (Maybe I will never use it, cause the only function that I use it's for video conference)

Update:
A couple of days ago, I take the tab once again in order to replace the back cover, and this time I went most deeper into cleaning, and VOILA! Both camera working again. I'm sure that the connection between camera and motherboard, was loose. Now I have no problems with them. Although remains being a little laggy (sometimes I need to restart due the freezes) it's a great tablet

I just got a used Nexusd 9 off Ebay and also get the black screen when I open the camera. I tried a different camera but get an error message saying it can't connect because the camera is in use by another application. I get this message even with the stock camera app disabled. I see the OP fixed it by removing the back but I am reluctant to do that for fear of screwing up something. I can certainly live w/o the camera but am annoyed that it wasn't disclosed by the seller.

It is the stock ROM. I decided to return the tablet rather than waste a lot of time on it.

[Q] Rear camera not working

Hi there, I've had my Z2 for almost a week now and have been happy with it. Unfortunately, today, the rear camera decided to stop working. When I try to access it, I get the usual icons but no image, just a black screen. The front camera works just fine. The only "fix" I've found, so far, is to turn the phone off for a few minutes. On rebooting, the camera seems to work just fine. If I try to use any of the special features (like the dinosaur stuff) while the camera isn't working, I get "error: camera not available".
I presume the hardware is faulty. Has anyone else suffered this problem?
Return it. Sounds like hardware failure to me. You can try hard reset or fix through sony update service, but I've not seen this issue yet and if it were me I'd return for exchange.

Thanks. I returned it to the Vodafone shop I bought it from. They swapped it for a new one, without fuss.

What? Take care of yourself. It's disappointing that I spent last year 750$ on Nexus 6P and I got problems with it like shut down off under 20% percent of battery life, while Apple has similar problems for their devices and they are fixing it.

Cool. Please let us know if you think it solved the problem of shut off below 20% (if you were experiencing that issue at all). It's a tough one to identify because for me it happens about half of the time, not all of the time.
Thanks. Good luck!

I get same error intermittently on my Pixel XL right now, so it's not 6p-specific.
Does anyone know if any of the pixel mods work on the beta?
I extracted the boot and modified it with dm-verity and force encryption disabled. But now I'm not sure how to test, I would need the images and not the update zip to fastboot flash the rest of update Images. I guess one would just update then fastboot flash boot. Or does google post preview images elsewhere? My work pc has fastboot setup and I'll update then test and report back. If anyone wants to try it here's the link.

I've read the finger print gestures were coming through the 7.1.2 beta and rumor has it 7.1.3 was getting Google assistant. But they did state "rumor has it" so don't know what's all in the 7.1.2 beta for us Nexus 6P folks.

the problem is the battery, early battery degradation, they could mitigate this issue on the software side but it won't stop completely and the battery will keep getting worse.
I changed mine and no more shutdown and 2x more battery life.
and the reason why you only have this issue half the time is because if you use certains apps that use high voltage, it will trigger the shutdown (launching the the camera and taking picture is the easiest way to do it)

This error is not due to android 7.1.2. I'm experiencing same on android 7.1.1 on my moto g having RR 5.8.2 rom.So, I guess it is more of a server side problem or a problem in google app itself

I and my wife both had the early shutdown problems on our phones - she's on an iPhone6 and I'm on the 6p. I got an RMA phone, and no more problems (exactly the same software setup). I don't think it's a software problem, and highly suspect planned obsolescence where the batteries are designed to have cells have a life of around 18 months or so. One of the cells in the battery dies, and so the voltage drops off way fast once the remaining good cells discharge and the phone battery meter can't figure out what's going on. I'd bet a box of doughnuts that no software change is going to fix the actual problem. I have no proof of that, just skeptical observation.
If I were a black helicopter & tin foil hat person, I'd even have a hint of wonder if that's what happened to the Explod-a-Note. Maybe the manufacturers were pushing the envelope of how little past the warranty date they could get the (non-replaceable) batteries to die. AFAIK, battery tech isn't much more compact / more mAH in recent years, so just makes me wonder...

Broken camera module/software bypass

Long short, dropped my phone which broke the rear camera module. On android 6 the phone correctly detects a disfunctioning rear camera and only allows the front camera to be used.
This issue happened on Sony stock rom, shortly after an update was released for Sony stock android 7.
Since then I have flashed a large number of roms, both stock and custom. No luck finding a fix.
On android 7, the cameras cannot be used at all. Any app that tries to use a camera hangs and crashes. Doesn't matter if apps try to load the front or rear camera, or the flashlight.
This includes settings apps, quick toggles, apps like Skype and snap chat cannot even be opened. Google apps constantly crash, Google translate takes forever to load.
Is there any way I c an separate or mark the camera not to be used at all? Would like to have front camera functionality as is in android 6.
Currently using lineage OS 14.1-20170809, android 7.1.2
Happy to mess around in root settings, suspect I might need to edit the kernel. No experience in coding or programming but competent in backups and twrp, flashing, fast boot.
Logcat indicates camera every time there's a hang or crash.
This issue has been super frustrating and I'm not quite willing to purchase a new device just yet.
I'm not sure if it's permitted, but I'm quite happy to provide litecoin (ltc, bitcoins little sister) as a way to accommodate your time and show my appreciation..
Thankyou!

No soldering my friend, just purchase the right part and stick it in there. No way to upgrade, best case scenario the new camera is as good as the old

Good to read that it's working fine again
Can you elaborate how you replaced the camera module ?
Did you follow ifixit (https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Sony+Xperia+Z5C+Rear+camera+&+Earpiece+&+Front+camera+Replacement/53287) ?
Or did it someone replace it for you ?
Heya zach! Actually neither. Pulled apart an m4 that I have which suffers from the battery issues, to check on camera compatibility before deciding to open my device. You know what the problem was? A ****ing loose connection.
In saying that, I had some interesting success with removing references to hal and restoring a camera apk and data from an Android 6 install

No need, pleasure is in helping!

Camera AI doesn't seem to be working.

I don't know if this is a common problem but I've been noticing that the camera of my mate 10 doesn't detect scenarios properly as it used to before. My mate 10's still 3 weeks old and I've only factory reset it once. However, it detects humans and there are times that it identifies my cat as a human being.
To add, every time I reset my phone, the camera returns to its snappy scenario detection; but after "optimizing" the phone and clearing the camera app from the running apps list, the ai won't work again. I tried clearing the camera's cache and memory, but to no avail.
I know I'm being nitpicky, but the camera scenario detection's one reason why I bought the mate 10. I'm bummed out to have experienced this just now.
Anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone know a fix?
It happen for me too but a reboot fix it or clear camera data.
I know it's not a nice thing but maybe a software update can fix it.

If you are rooted I believe this breaks the AI system wide (including the camera's ability to smartly recognise objects and scenery). I believe as of yet there is no fix for this (if you are rooted).

Me too! I'm using Mate 10 Pro and sometimes AI in camera doesn't work that I have to reboot my phone to get it working again.
AI returns after update
Mine is 9 days old and the AI symbols stopped appearing on around day 3. I have rebooted a couple of times but the AI symbol never appears when photographing objects such as food and cats. HOWEVER, I checked for an Update tonight and there was one waiting. I have just upgraded from 8.0.0.128 (C636 Asia-Pacific region) to 8.0.0.131 and good news, AI is back!
The cat never looked so good :highfive:
Nice! I'll be waiting for that update then since it's still not available on me.
camera cache and data wipe, followed by a restart, worked for me
For me AI is working on 20mp and not on on 12mp settings.

I had the same issue, even after updating to the new firmware. what i did was i restored/reset (Repaired) via the Xperia companion app. Now at least for me the fingerprint reader works flawless every single time.
So if formatting your phone is an option for you, that should work. (Was a pain re-installing all apps and re-setting all logins and all, but this really ironed out lot of issues for me)
I am on June update and I can tell you that formatting the device does NOT help. I don't have the July update yet to say if that they fixed the issue.
I hate the fact that it doesn't recognize my FP. It feels like Xperia Z5 all again. Then again FP is so deep seated and it's really difficult to use it when there's a case on.

Xperia 1 - July Firmware FPR Lag Solved/Fixed
As i mentioned before, after the july firmware my FPR works mostly every single time. I guess every phone is different or maybe you can try what i did, it may just work for you.
I did a factory reset using the "Software repair" function in the Xperia Companion with the latest firmware, now the UI is amazingly smoother and the FPR reader works flawlessly.
I have made a small video showing exactly how good the reader works now. If you have the time please watch it and also follow the steps mentioned above if you have the time to restore all the apps and setting, but trust me its better than just living with an awful finger print function.

I'm on August update and I get this frequently. There is a bug somewhere on this and when I hit the fingerprint issue, I just restart the phone and its perfect again (well after initial pin login due to reboot haha)
It's quite annoying but haven't had time to figure it out. Something with music app running while locked or?
