On my note 8, the media volume randomly goes to maximum volume without me touching anything. My notification, ring tone, system and Bixby volumes aren't touched, but only the media volume. It started happening maybe a month and a half after I got the phone (mid-ish October). I brought it to t-mobile and dude said to hard reset it, so I did. The issue was fixed. Fast forward to yesterday and I notice my volume starting to go up again. Idk what's up with it, nor what to do.
Does anybody have any idea as to why it may be doing that? And has anyone else had that problem?

Oddly I've had this issue on my Note 4. Weird. Anyway, got a case? Maybe the case is pushing up on the volume button? Any apps that may cause it? Once it happens, does it happen again immediately?

Yeah I have the rugged Samsung kickstand case. I don't think that's the problem. Wow it literally happened as I was typing this after I took the case off.
I have no idea what apps could cause it. I read a post about an S7 having this issue with the clock app. Idk how that would work though. How could that cause it [volume] to act up?
It doesn't happen immediately after I turn the volume back down, but shortly after. Not a set amount of time, but maybe 3 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes; it really varies, but it always happens at some point after I turn the volume back down.

If you can muster using the phone in Safe mode for a bit and see if it happens again...that would be the only other way I can think of to try and pinpoint whats going on. (easiest way to get into safe mode is to ask Bixby). So, if it never happens to in Safe mode...then a Factory Reset? Not sure if that's what you meant when you mentioned a Hard Reset.
I found the doggone problem! Freaking Google voice! You have to turn it off. Problem solved! I believe it was my s3 that had a problem and it was l linked to Google voice...saying, "okay Google". I've been down with android since the HTC Evo. I'm into routing and have rooted every device...even my note 8. So...yeah...turn off Google voice and you'll be fine!

Nothing. I wouldn't even know where to start.
So after a little poking around
I noticed that her back button has now become a volume down key, appears to be remapped, though the thing is, the phone isn't rooted. Any ideas on this?
Very odd behavior. One thing that could be tried is to reapply the SBF using RSDLite. However, it may not be of any benefit doing that since the phone hasn't been rooted, the system files should still be primarily untouched. Other than that, I'm wondering if the keyboard layout schema has been changed somehow by a market app.
That, or it's a hardware issue of some sort. I don't know the internal layout of the X2, but maybe, somehow, something's been swapped around?
What happens when you push the Volume Down button? Does the Back button turn volume down and go back, or does it only turn the volume down? What apps have been installed on it?
Also, it sounds stupid, but have you actually checked to make sure it's not rooted? Chances are if you haven't it's not, but I've come across "new" phones before that were refurbished, usually from testing or display, that some jackass did something to and the company couldn't be bothered to reset them.
My best bet is an exchange. If it's doing this out the gate from purchasing, I'd get a new one.
The past two mornings when I wake up my prime was shutdown and a simple power on does not do the trick. I just start hitting volume and the power button and it eventually powers on.

I've had it happen to me a couple of times. This is very similar to what happened with my transformer, but very much less frequency. Basically when it goes on standby and locks the screen, and you move to a different location, it won't wake back up. You have to hold the button for 30 seconds to shut it down and power it back up. This isn't a major problem and will probably be fixed with future updates. I am worry about my other problems, GPS, sluggishness, and wifi signal is still really week. When it's good it's really fast, but when I'm in an area of my house (the toilet) weak ass signal!

cool thanks.
This is exactly what I came here looking for. Mine arrived this morning and worked fine all day and now it won't wake up... Since I've had it for less than 12 hours, I wasn't entirely happy, but at least I'm not the only one with the issue and I'm sure Asus will correct it... at least I hope so, lol
+1 on this issue.
while sleeping it shuts down. It can be turned back on by holding the power button, but at that point it has to start back up again, not just come out of sleep mode.
2 days ago, I woke up, this happened to tablet - it was off. I am on ICS mind you. It was not battery as when I restarted, it had 44%.
I was a little freaked out as I had to hold down the power button for longer than normal it seemed to get it to come on.
Very strange.
I had this happen for the first time yesterday. I used the reset hole with a paper clip. The reset hole is the one on the left side under the SD card slot, not the hole on the top near the camera.
my email to Gary Key:
Is the 9.4.2.13 update expected to fix the shutdown issue that is
separate from crash/restart issue?
I do not experience crashes but my unit will read as an empty battery
when it is sleeping and shutdown. When started back up the battery
level is fine.
His response:
It should also address this problem. We had two units returned with
this problem and the update cured both of the units. I cannot 100%
guarantee it at this point until we collect additional data but
hopefully it will work fine for you. Ensure you are on AC when the .13
update is started. After the completion of the update. Please shutdown
the unit and do a full power on cycle.
I am still having the sleep/shutdown issues after updating to 9.4.2.13.
GK requested I do a full system reset (dont know if its different from factory reset in the settings but they sent instructions that takes you to the cold boot menu with the wipe data icon and then you wipe data) and update the included apps.
if this doesnt work, will have to send it in.
I can still return as well, but everything else is working (including GPS) so I hate to return it. And as of now amazon is only refund anyway so Id have to find a replacement elsewhere.
Love the smell of napalm in the morning.
after the .14 update, I am still getting shutdowns.
I downloaded the update, then cold booted, then installed, then cold booted again.
anybody else still experiencing this??
Had no problems what so ever with my software until i updated to .21, ( others had flickers, signal problems and stuff like that. ).
How ever the last update seem to have given my tablet the "sleep of death" issue, so it seems to be called atleast, after putting it into sleep it wont wake up unless i hold the power button and let it turn off and then power it back up, happen twice and i just recently updated to .21.

A soft reset is needed just to get the thing working again... It happens again after that, so no, it doesn't really solve anything.

soft reset doesn't mean you have to reinstall everything again. that's a hard/factory reset. soft reset you just stick a paper clip in the little hole underneath the memory card slot.
I don't have that issue at all. I think 2-3 people reported it or from what I've seen so far.

Is this the problem where the screen goes black like usual and when you tap power it doesn't come back on no matter how many times you press power?
This started happening to me after the update, but all I had to do was tap the volume button and then the power button would start responding again.
Hope the fix is that simple for all of you.

It happened to me again and the volume trick didn't work this time. Holding power for about 10 seconds to restart still worked though. Are all Android tablets this unstable? As much as I love the whole idea of Android, the minor to serious kinks I regularly encounter with this thing are pretty aggravating.
It happended twice to me after the upgrade. Had to keep pushing power for like 10 seconds.

its just a software issue introduced with the latest patch and sins it wasent there before the patch its hopefully removed within the next update.
*edit* - it have happen a couple of times now for me and i tried spaming the crap out of the buttons with no result so the only working method is to hold the power button to it goes off or the soft reset button...
I posted this in another thread, but thought I'd put it here also in case the other one is too far down. This is working for me.
I've been having this since the latest update as well. It happens whether it's on the charger or not. So far I haven't had it out of the dock long enough to know if being docked has anything to do with it, but I do know that removing it from the dock once it happens doesn't clear the issue. However, I did notice that if I go under Settings > ASUS Customized Setting > BATTERY SAVING and uncheck MobileDock Battery saving mode, it doesn't seem to happen. After I did that it didn't happen for about 36 hours, but as soon as I re-checked it to test, it happened the first time it went to sleep. Maybe a coincidence, but prior to that I couldn't make it more than a couple of hours without it happening. Might be worth a try as a work around if you're having this issue. After it happened to me again, I unchecked the setting above again and have had no SoD since.
This has happened to me 3 times now since the update and the only way to get any response on is by holding the power button for 10 seconds. Mine has always been docked and plugged into the charger when this happened.

yea, saw this in the other post and tried it to, havent worked for me tho, :/, im gonna undock the tablet this night and ill see if it happens again this morning without the dock, so far it have happpen every morning with and without the charger plugged in, and even while it was a sleep in my bag at work, ( while in the dock ).
I had this happen for the first time today.
I lost about an hour of productivity as it took me ages to work out I had to hold the power button for just over 10 seconds to get it to force a shutdown.
I'm guessing everyone here has a dock who is getting this issue.
Lastnight I enabled the network deep sleeep and dock sleep in asus custom settings.
Anyone using the same? and getting the issue.
Is off twice this day and I had to send the report to htc.
Does anyone has passed this, I just want advice?

I have had no shutdowns or restarts myself. Maybe a rogue app causing your issues?
I've had about 4 random reboots since I received my phone early Thursday ... While in my belt clip and case. Get phone off blt and it's rebooting. Not rooted yet, so that's not it. Just installing all the apps I had on my 3d.
If I can't figure it out and still happening by Sunday I'm requesting a replacement.

Same here...
Same here. except my issue seems much worse. Whenever i receive a text message, or actually send one, toggle the volume in either direction, try to play any music file, play youtube videos, or take pictures. She freezes up, then reboots. internet works fine, browser runs fine, can navigate menus fine. phone calls only mess up like every third call or so. lock screen is fine too.
the only apps i have downloaded are GO SMS Pro, Netflix (which played a show just fine) and Zedge.
I've done 2 Factory resets and still no luck.
Took it up to sprint earlier and they werent able to help because they dont have any EVO LTEs in the store yet. Since they couldnt help, i'm contemplating rooting to see if it'll do anything different. Doesnt make sense to me cuz I cant install a custom ROM, but neither does the phone acting up like it is while its purely stock.
Oh well, I'll keep checking and keep you all posted on what happens.
I've had some restarts myself. I believe it is the seidio surface case and holster doing it. This phone will do a restart from the lock screen if you hold the power button down for 5 seconds. That starts a 3 countdown to restart. I just took the plastic piece over the pwr btn off.... hope that works.
Their has to be a way to turn that power option off! Not sure if I should get a new case or if my power button is to sensitive.

The reason being that this does that is because of the non-removable battery. They had to make a fail-safe because you can't do a battery pull like before

I just received my new Incredible and am very excited as it is a huge upgrade from my trusty old Eris. I have one very annoying issue though. The phone randomly turns off on its own, and I have to press and hold the power button multiple times for it to restart. Has anyone else experienced this?
Also, does anyone know how to turn off the annoying 'DROID' noise at startup? I tried the Silent Boot app, but it doesn't seem to work on this device.

Not normal. Make sure a program you installed isn't causing the issue first then think about returning it.
Sent from my ADR6410LVW using Tapatalk 2
Definitely not normal. Perhaps your battery cover is loose?
I used to have to do something really ghetto to my original Incredible while it was near the end of its life. I put a folded business card between the battery and cover so it wouldn't jar itself loose and shut off the phone.
However, does not seem normal at all for a new phone.
The same thing happened to mine a few times. I think the power button is very sensitive. Just a small amount of pressure is needed to close the circuit and if its held that way for over 1 second then phone thinks your trying to initiate a shut-down so it does so.
Just thinking out loud here, not totally sure....

Yes I've noticed it takes a little longer comparing from my Thunderbolt. I can hold pwr button down, count to ten and it starts booting up. But with the Dinc4G, it does take a little longer holding down but it may be a quicker boot up time overall. This from just the two times or so how it seems to me ...I just got it so still acclimating and had already thoughts that the extended battery may be nice to just give me a little more to hang on to .

I received a warranty replacement that did that (randomly turning off). Was irreconcilable after talking with tech support.
My recommendation is to perform factory reset if you can, remove sd card, and see if it works properly.
If not you most likely have a hardware defect of some kind. Return or replace.

I did a factory reset and it still does it randomly. And it only does it when its in my pocket. I thought it was my case (i have the otter box commuter) so I cut it around the power button. Still it happened to me today. About getting a replacement, since it happens randomly far inbetween, there is no way for me to prove there is a problem.
