Android Security Patch Level In V30 As Of 2018 ? - LG V30 Questions & Answers

Does anyone have the January 5 2018 or later Android Security Patch Level in their V30 yet?
If so, was it already in phone as delivered, or installed via OTA or other means?
TIA...

The date of the latest security patch is January 1st. Got it OTA several days ago (T-Mobile).

Weird is a polite word for what it is. Biggest security flaw ever and there is no rush to issue a patch...

Biggest ever? How many times has it been exploited?

I think you meant that sarcastically, since its impossible to know the answer to that question.
Anyhow, I was referring to the percentage of users/devices affected. The KRACK vulnerability is said to impact all android devices running Android 6 and later. Thats every android cell phone made in the last 18 months. The security patch for December fixes it. Some companies like Oneplus, took the initiative to release their own fix ahead of that.

Thats the January patch, so that has no relevance to the KRACK security vulnerability that was addressed in the December patch for androids that didnt get it earlier through some means.

Correct. I was referring to the subject of the thread.

Most of the V30 have at least the December security update, don't they? The US998 does.

There's always debate about the risk of particular unpatched vulnerabilities.
There are also vulnerabilities that may be exploited some time after becoming widely known, and this may go unreported for quite some time.
Just because there are no widely circulated reports of exploits "in the wild" of a widespread vulnerability like KRACK, doesn't mean it is not a significant risk that should be mitigated if possible.
I want confirm that the KRACK and Spectre patches are implemented and tested OK in the V30 before I buy one. That means the Jan 5 2018 Android Security Patch from Google, which apparently may mean a later dated patch from LG. (Re - the report of an LG patch dated Jan 1, out-of-sync with the Google Android patch dates.)
Thanks for continued info and etc.

How do you even update? I just noticed my phone that I got at the end of December is running September 2017....
I tried the LG Bridge on my computer but the update always fails and says my phone can't be updated. Not sure what I'm missing.

Bingo. That's why I want to confirm that the Jan 5 2018 or later patch* is already in the shipping phones before I buy one, and already tested OK by the beta testers (the user population). Even after the patch is in shipping phones, the OTA deployment will take a while, and not all phones will get it at the same time, some will get it months later than others.
Security update deployment is a major shortcoming of this Android-manufacturer-carrier paradigm, for all except the Pixel family. And look how the makers are dragging their feet on Treble, which is supposed to address this problem.
(* The LG patch date will be later than the Jan 5 2018 Google Android patch date, for the same patch. What will that LG patch date be? Who knows, it appears it is not even ready yet for V30.)

The Spectre patch is in the Jan 5 2018 Android patch from Google, so patching both KRACK and Spectre requires this patch level.
Since the LG Android security patch dates in the V30 are apparently out of sync with the official Google Android patch dates, who knows what, exactly, is patched in a particular LG patch date? The Jan 1 2018 LG patch may be the first one with the December 2017 Google KRACK patch.
Based on the pattern so far, it appears likely that the first LG patch date to include Spectre will be a Feb 1 2018 LG patch. Or later.
Thanks to those who posted their LG patch dates, this was illuminating.

Seems like I just needed to Re enable some packages in package disabler. I think it was the license agreement one specifically but I just downloaded the Ota update.

Security patch levels on my Samsung's has also always been as of first of the month as far as I can remember.
It seems to be the same level, e.g. Jan 5. = Jan 1., as far as I interpret from the table here (patch level column) :
https://source.android.com/security/bulletin/
Google mentions two dates at patch level dates.

As with prerelease versions of regular Android the preview source only contains the changes they are required to publish because of their license. Example is the kernel with is GPL2 licensed requiring source code releases.
Android Wear 2.0 is definitely confirmed for the Zenwatch 2 any day now hopefully

Even though this may be true we have to keep in mind... That Google MAY be releasing the source to Manufactures on Feb 15. ASUS still needs to sign off on it essentially and hopefully not muck it up to much by making their own changes. I dont hopefully for see that but you never know! I had emailed ASUS myself the other day asking them if they had a scheduled date for the rollout and they responded they were not certain. I as well as all of you am very eager to see wear 2.0 arrive on our ZW2! I think a new breath of life will bring a whole new meaning to wearables!
Also in the email i received from ASUS they commented they will not roll out a factory image that can be flashed to the watch via PC. They do have their security updates posted on asus.com but apparently once they roll it out we will have to wait till it arrives on our watch and not just download it and flash it. Unless this rep was wrong however.
Just figured i would let you all know what ive found so far.

Yea if someone could grab the OTA.zip prior to installing it and pull it via ADB or fastboot then yes we should be able to use that instead of waiting on a slow rollout.
Guess we will have to see what happens!

I have more faith in Asteroid OS than this buggy Android wear crap!
Wear 2.0 is a pretty significant rewrite. I'd rather they get it right than get it fast.
Also, Wear 1.0, while largely just a remote notification system, still works just fine for what it is. The only major feature in 2.0 that I'm waiting for is truly local apps, so I can kill the stupid stub apps on my phone.

+1 :good:Getting impatient! I have been waiting for a year or 2 for a system update to fix some BT issues.
Month ago I asked if they knew anything about: sometimes the support via chat told me that it will be released in 2018, sometimes they say they didn't know nothing about...once someone said the only ones that knows are located in Korea and there is no way to reach them (I suppose he was talking about the developers).
BTW I asked for the H840
dont think the g5 will get it.
we will definitely get the Oreo update. so patience guys!
i think this too, we just have to wait.
maybe September? who knows!
I've just received a formal update about the Oreo update?

LG
LG has been fairly mum about the status of its Oreo updates. However, for the company's 2017 flagships, we have concrete information about 8.0's status. It is worth noting that we believe an Oreo update for the LG G5 seems unlikely. The G5 sold very poorly and the time invested would not be worth it for LG's software team.
What do you guys think?
I really hope this is wrong....

It has all the sense from LG business point of view. It was the same with G4. They were silent about Nougat update and then some pressure coming mainly from XDA users did that LG promised Nougat update. Finally this update arrived, but officially just for Korean variant.
I am almost sure that Oreo never will reach G5, since it was a sales disaster. I can understand LG: not much sense to invest money and effort in a failed phone (same as G4). But from user point of view (like me) this will lead in never trust or buy any Lg device again.

Not even a second major update for G5 would be very stupid and a very good way to lose further market share with a bad reputation also on the update side. With the G4 bootlop problems they have already lost ground against competitors, another orde of G5 disappointed users would be a bad strike for the brand image. A serious brand simply cannot stop to upgrade so fast a flagship device nowadays for this reason I think the update to Oreo will be released.
I know that even if I get Oreo, I will never buy a lg phone again.
I dont understand the hate of the G5. its a fantastic phone. It's still my daily driver.
I did a little research too on it as well. LG Itself lost out on £244 Million because of the LG G5 Sales figures. In my opinion I like the LG G5 mainly because of the camera and the weird/interesting body that it has. For me I don't see the G5 future looking so bright due to the sales. LG are probably thinking whats the point of updating the devices if rarely no one has it? I really hope LG doesn't pull the plug on the G5. I do have hopes of LG dropping the oreo update on this phone because the phone is only 3 years old.
I recently bought the Nexus 6P because of the overwhelming amount of custom roms that they have on there so far I am loving it. But I'll still be using the G5 as a little modification phone.

I got nougat last April. So i think this will take some time
You dont need Oreo to be honest. There is nothing new in it compared to Android 7. Dont know whats going on at Google. They are a mess. Every single Google product slowed down drastically over the last 2-3 years. At least the "end user" costumer products. I guess Google is doen milking those, and is investing all it's man power into other things like cloud or server products. Android development is basically dead, Chrome dead, Google Home products, dead. Pixel 2 was a fail too.
In europe on Amazon a NEW G5 is still damn pricey, even the SE edition is pricey too! it's the last top end with swappable battery and a crazy quality front and rear cameras (everyone I take a picture with, says that it makes damn cool selfies, instragram numbers talks...).My sister bought a G6 when a few months ago he destroyed his G5 display since the price difference was very low (and she work in a store, she don't care about letting it charging all the day).Is my primary phone and when my G4 was stolen this summer I bought another G5 on amazon wharehouse like new for €250, I'm very happy about that, G4 was actually starting to be slow with nougat.I actually don't feel the need of an update, but if OREO promise to speedup is ok.I don't even use the 2windows option of nougat, so I really don't care about PIP, I'm pretty ignorant about OREO maybe, I just know that should be a "lighter" OS.But I'm on 20q firmware and I'm so ok that I'm even afraid to update to 20s And yes, I like to keep a second battery in my pocket and with the official 2nd battery charger I can do a powerbank for my friends....need else? X-)))

LG G6 Android Oreo update will arrive in Europe by the end of June / Good Bye my G6

The LG V30 is already happily running Android Oreo in some parts of the world (most notably the company's home country of South Korea). The G6, on the other hand, hasn't been as lucky. Back in October a unit running Oreo appeared in a benchmark, and then around the end of last year we found out that LG was running a beta test of the software in China.
If you were wondering when the finalized version of LG's interpretation of Oreo would finally reach Europe, for example, we may now have the answer. According to the company's official website for Italy, the G6 is expected to be graced with the update in the first half of this year. Here's a screenshot proving the above.

That unfortunately means that, in the worst case scenario, you will have to wait until late June to see the tasty treat on your G6, a handset that isn't even one year old at this point. LG Italy's official Twitter account has pinned down the update time frame even more - to the second quarter (so at some point between April and June).
Source
Of course you are free to do what you want with your phone, but doesn't that reaction seem kind of irrational? Trash an otherwise good phone because you have to wait a few more months for an update (and not that big an update at that)?
To me its really a matter of expectations.
When you buy a toaster or a refrigerator do you become angry and get rid of it after a year because the manufacturer doesn't upgrade your product after you buy it?
Did LG promise you or advertise when you bought the phone that you will get updates on a schedule?
No I don't work for LG
You think his reaction is bad? You should see the LG G6 subreddit.. I think LG will lose many customers after their very blasé approach to dealing with software updates.

Last time I've checked, Polish LG rep said that we should get Oreo on G6 around February. He posted that screenshot from above last week and now there's a news from LG Italy that Oreo will arrive in Q2 2018...
Let's wait till the end of February and check if LG is f.cking their customers with loads of bull.
If they are, the customers should f.ck them when the new LG phones get released.
I respectfully disagree. How many of their average customers care about updates?
People who comment on forums are a select (weird) group, probably a very small % of the customers. For those folks, timely updates are important.
I am a bit of a technophile myself, and although updates are fun, more important are the long term useability and durability.

BTW found the discussion on Twitter, seems they're discussing about a test (i say "they" because i don't know if the screen is yours), who knows, usually Poland is the first country in Europe to receive Major updates in LG History, but the KDZ didn't pop up yet...
I'm calling out that there is an elephant in the room.
This might sound kind of provocative, but could it be that LG concluded that Oreo is not really a major update, and is therefore not in a rush to get it on existing models?
It seems to me that there is a lot of hype in new versions.
When I look at the list of the new "features" in Oreo, it's really quite unimpressive. Picture in picture? Icons that change shape? Who cares? It's a much smaller difference than say Kit Kat to Lollipop.
Of course when you buy a new model phone you want the latest software on it.
But just because Android came out with a new version number it doesn't mean its that much different. Modern OSs are pretty evolved and full featured now, so many improvements are basically stylistic changes that are like getting new style clothing.
Most of the things that Google hypes as major changes are more like minor tweaks. Other than the security updates, can anybody tell me how Oreo is any more functional than Marshmallow?
Also , many of the evolutionary improvements are pushed through the Google system app update anyway. Anything else can be obtained via other launchers
Just playing the contrarian here...

Android oreo comes to H870S in end of this month(may)

i searched to google and found this topic in reddit forum
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.re...o_will_arrive_at_the_end_of_may_for_g6_h870s/
Maybe but that source looks a bit dodgy.
I wonder if Oreo will come to my Taiwan model H870DS; I haven't had a update since November 2017. I'm running the October patch

sounds bad...October patch really? my H870S model is running on March patch i think LG need to learn than Apple why lots of variants for each phone? 1 or 2 or each one dual sim and one slot sim Apple realases updates for all variants in one or two days LG is very slow i wonder what they do...any way LG need learn to dont make lots of variants for each phone ic each country has a defferent variant WHY?
Lg is really an exaggeration, htc, sony, samsung, nokia and other companies are updating oreo, even if the last year's flagships have no news. Did their engineers fall asleep? There is less and less confidence in lg, g6 should be my last lg mobile phone.
I've been looking at the Nokia 7 Plus as a replacement for my G6.
They receive updates nearly as fast as Pixel and also have pure Android.
They are currently on Oreo 8.1.
Looks like a nice phone and the reviews are pretty decent.
I have also H870DSU lg g6+ and no update right now ???
F**k you lg. I am buying pixel 2. My first and last lg phone
Seems LG is not willing to release update its 27th of May only 4 days are remaining to Jun

I've been keeping an eye on the Google Android OTA site (which hasn't posted the update yet). I imagine it will be available there first.

I've been refreshing the OTA site throughout the day and still no image there.
Hopefully it will be available soon

I used tasker and set up a routine where the phone checks every 12 milliseconds....it worked well until that unfortunate melting of the Tensor chip.

Big problem is I could not find the tongue-in-cheek emoji for my post
Here's a sobering thought. It won't come today but on the 20th. Some folks who ordered the 2nd gen Pixel stand are saying today's email said something like, 'please keep your phone updated so you will be ready for the December patch due out later this month'.
Expect it by the end of the day. Usually see it around lunch PST but I am sure they will announce if it won't make it today.
From my shipping email for a Pixel Stand 2nd Generation (email received about 25 minutes ago):
1 - Beginning later this week, the December 2021 software update will roll out for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro users. We encourage you to check your Android version and update to receive the latest software. This update may not be immediately available for all regions at launch. To determine when this update will be available for your Pixel, please refer to the Pixel support forum.

Seems like Google is going backwards here.
Step 1, release update for older models
Step 2, release latest model's update for several countries
Step 3, ?US market?
Step 4, take over the world
Obviously it's not coming today. Would've been released by now. Did Google explicitly & directly say themselves that it would drop on the 13th? Or was it reported from 3rd parties that it would?

Too many people are saying the update is released in countries other than the USA. It's nowhere in the wild.
Edit: apologies for that. I have looked everywhere for any mention of it anywhere and found nothing. Then this popped up on my phone, I'm in the UK
