[BIP] Teardown, PCB Close Ups and Hardware corrections - Amazfit

I took apart a Bip to see what was inside.
Here are some close ups displaying IDs on chips.
The blue tape is to reinforce the rumble motor since it is soldered with just a weak ribbon cable that I did not want to stress out too much.
There is one chip that has no markings that I have not identified yet. Any ideas on what it is would be great (I'm thinking it's the Sony GPS module).
I would also like to post a few clarifications on what appears to actually be in the watch:
Amazfit and all of the retailers I have seen list the Bip as having a MediaTek MPU. This doesn't appear to be the case, based on the Chip markings I found.
CPU: STM32L476JEY6: 80Mhz, 128kb SRAM (minus 32KB for HW parity), 1mb onboard Flash, Quad SPI memory interface
Flash: 8mb (25LQ64CVIG)
Bluetooth: DA14580
Barometer: DPS310
Accelerometer: LIS2DH12
Battery: 200mAh (Mfg lists a 190mAh)
Capacitive Touch: IT7259
If you have any questions or want any further pictures, let me know. I believe this particular example still works.
The only thing that I'm not going to do is delaminate the display assembly.

Hello,
i have a bricked Amazfit BIP so i decided to open it up.
I saw there is a Winbond 25Q64FWIQ flash onboard, so i'm wondering if anyone has a flash dump to try to reflash mine with a chip programmer

hacked board
Hey.
I spent a lot of time studying the device.
I want to share my work, here is a link to pictures in high resolution:
yadi.sk/d/fhZ_85AQFkPTEA
In addition to the list, applied chips:
CXD5603GF - UFBGA-48, GPS
BQ24050 - WSON-10, Li-Pol Battery Charger
TPS62743 dc-dc step-down
AS7024 BioSENSORS
In the near future I will try to reflash the microcontroller using a programmer ST-Link.
(translated by Google from Russian)

Do you have any pictures of the cpu chip?

How did you figure out in this picture SWDIO and SWCLK pins (which are the same for Serial wire JTAG debug port aka SWJ-DP)?
BTW, just for reference, here is a link to github with more information github.com/amazfitbip/documentation/issues/4
I think we can port rebbleOS on it. It should also be possible to recover a bricked bip using those two pins just by reflashing the firmware (with st link or similar devices, there are cheap ones on ebay). I can't try it though, since I don't have a device at the moment.

Thanks Viktor. I'm going to see if I can talk to it over ST link as well.

Improve water resistant
How can we improve its water resistant ability? Like gluing it? What happens if we block the barometer hole?

Hi, did anyone have experience really bad battery life? i don't know if the component or the battery, but my amazfit bip only last about 1 to 2 days. my bip just only one year old, and the battery getting worse from 1 week to just only 1 or 2 days. as far as i know, amazfit bip battery life should enough for 4 weeks or 1 month.

This is wrong information.
BQ24050 is USB charger for 4.2v battery.
"SII" is marking for BQ24045 non-USB for 4,35v battery.
So, the proper charger is BQ24045 and BQ24040 is compatible for 4.2v battery (can be used for replacement).

Is anyone still working on this?

Yes: https://github.com/JohnRThomas/Amazfitbip-FreeRTOS
I have a basic blink program running on the Bip. Flashing over ST-Link. (Note that the contents of the screen are simply persistent)

Keep up the good work!
I have been writing firmware for another cheap smart watch (SMA-Q2) for some time now. It has the same screen, but much simpler hardware.
But since the SMA-Q2 is out of production, I am looking at Amazfit Bip for future hacking.

It's way simpler. It's all based on a Nordic NRF52832 chip on a big PCB, not crammed with hardware like the Bip. No GPS or fancy sensors, just accelerometer and heart rate monitor.

I have Amazfit Bip which is now blank screen not connect by phone. How to re install official firmware without connect to phone via Bluetooth. Is there any way to install or reset device by opening the watch and in pcb...any other way.... Sorry for my bad English.
Thanks in advance

Touchscreen Calibration Issues (You Might Have This Issue As Well) [Updated 1/4/2012]

Test Protocol By N11:
Navigate to Settings/About Tablet/System Firmware Update
Try to tap "Check Update" while charging and while unplugged
Report any differences. Also report your version information.
Test Protocol 2:
Download "Touch Test" or "Multi-Touch Benchmark"
Report any differences while charging and while unplugged. Also report your version information.
Edit 1: I have discovered that this only occurs when the device is charging... Weird. Can anybody else try this? Download "Touch Test" and play around with in while charging and unplugged.

Edit 2: Seems like other users are experiencing the same behavior! Please reply if you are experiencing problems too!
Edit 3: So I purchased a stylus from my local Walmart to get a more accurate, less subjective "touch" The results are shockingly clear.

Same thing is happening with mine, but I cant hit the refresh button on the tabs in the browser (instead it keeps clicking the close button). I even tried my targus stylus and it still doesn't work.
I had a very similar problem with mine only it went much further than just what you guys are experiencing. In addition to what you stated, mine wouldn't even register anything at random intervals and in random spots on the touch screen. Here's a little video of just some of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oywWUxPMeX8
I feel for you guys. I had to send my back. Currently awaiting a replacement.

has something to do with the voltage of the charger my epic 4g touch did the same thing with the wall adapter it came with started using a different charger from my old phone and problem went away...... I would be curious if all stock wall chargers for the prime do it or just some?
This is interesting. I had a Dell laptop with a defective charger and the touchpad would throw the mouse all over the place while it was charging.

I was going to try and pick up a replacement OEM TF101/201 charger from my local OfficeDepot (they actually carry these!) and try it, but they don't do opened box refunds...

I think it has something to do with the backplate tingling/improper grounding,
throwing some static at the touchscreen grid making it think its being touched elsewhere.
See howfar off the touch dot is at various places on your screen.
You should be able to figure out a trajectory to where it is making "contact".

Exactly, try turning around your charger (so turn it by 180°)
I had something similar happen on my DInc when I plugged it into the wall and car inverter using my brothers Motorola cable and charger. The phone will just go wonky with the touchscreen. As soon as I unplug it everything would be copacetic. Try another charger and or cable.
So i wonder if its more likely that my prime isnt the problem and my charger or home wiring is wonky
I noticed this yesterday where I could not close browser tabs. Eventually I got the tab to close, and thought this was just some dust on the screen or something.
I have not had any issues before and use it a lot while charging (its technically my wife's so she gets to run the battery down and I get it after since I sit close to a outlet), and I was not having issues at all until the last firmware update (not that it is necessarily related).
I will try and run some more tests this evening and see if I can produce. I would think if this was a hardware issue I would have run into it sooner.
Did anyone have this issue prior to any of the latest firmware updates?

I'm honestly not sure. Prior to my device arriving yesterday, I found out about the newly released root method for the latest OTA so I upgraded as soon as I turned on the device. I do not have a benchmark for comparison.
I will be trying to invert my charger and I will also be trying a different location across town to see if maybe my electrical wiring in my home is causing voltage noise/grounding issues.
I have a solution:
Code:
if (Device.isCharging) { Screen.Touch.setOffset(-5,-10) }
done...

[Charging Case] Power Jacket - 4500mAh

I know a lot of you are keen on cases that charges &increases the usage time of your Ultra. So here is another option that is probably cheaper, and has a higher capacity than Sony's, yet to be released case. The case uses the magnetic dock/ pins to charge the device.
Like i said before, I really can't see myself using this device, or anything similar. I purchased a case, and yet I would rather use the Ultra naked. It just feels better... (yeah I know there are so many ways you could read that last sentence.. but i'll leave it there anyway!)
Cost: $36 USD

I have one... Its ok but the charging capacity is overstated.. You will be lucky to et one full charge out of the device..
There is another thread around here somewhere. Someone actually broke his and so actually ripped it apart to see what was inside. It was a generic 4000Mah 3.7v battery.
Also even though the case is light, when combined with the phone it does feel considerably heavier. I've charged mine up and just left it in the glovebox of my car in case of emergencies.

Sup man,
I haven't bothered verifying if this case uses a Li-Po.. but if you do some quick google, you would see that keeping a Li-Po battery on full charge for too long would kill it after some time.. That's how I killed my original Galaxy note battery.. That's why manufacturers stock their batteries at only 40% charge and not on full charge.. :fingers-crossed:

Thanks

Yes you can. When the phone and jacket is on and connected it will charge the internal phone battery first and then switch to recharging the powerjacket :good:

Do you have trouble with yours turning on and off in your pocket, thus turning the screen on constantly? I only use mine now when it's sitting stationary somewhere because of this.

No I'd not noticed that, but I've since taken the case off and I have it in my glovebox in case of emergencies.
Whilst I appreciate the purpose of this case, it exposes the sides of our XZU making it prone to damage. I would have preferred to see a proper jacket that proteted all sides for better protection. lets hope some other brands or newer versions are released soon ideally identical in design to my current case ROCK Flexi Series View Case for Xperia Z Ultra.

I have this exact case ordered. I will provide a review when it arrives. Sadly it's just leaving for shipment today, so it will be 10-20 days.
Is anyone else having problems with this case after updating to firmware .136? Or is it just coincidence that my case is defective the same day that I updated?
My phone started going on and off charging without me pressing the button and now the case won't charge the phone at all. The LEDs light up on the case for a second when I press the button, but it doesn't charge the phone.

My Sony XZU model C6388 (UK) is on firmware 14.2.A.0.290, I'm not experiencing any issues on this firmware and I can't see how an external battery that is connected only using Sony's power contacts can get effected by a kernel update, it's more likely that you haven't charged the battery either because the micro USB port is damaged in the external battery pack, or there's a problem with the cable or USB power adapter you might be using, or that the cells in the battery pack are damaged.
Secondly, check to make sure that the connections between the battery pack and the phone are making a good contact, some of these packs get a little out of shape where the connection block is, especially if you constantly remove and reattach the pack.
So to test it out, i would remove the pack from the phone first then charge it up (check that the blue light is illuminated when you plug in the micro USB lead), then reattach to the phone and turn the battery pack on (making sure the packs got a good connection)
If you still have no luck, then chances are it's the battery pack that's at fault.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I agree - it doesn't make sense that firmware could affect it, but I was a bit paranoid after hearing about Samsung's issue with 3rd party S-View cases.
I plugged in the case for just a few minutes and now it's suddenly working again. The LEDs were indicating a full charge and it's been charging the phone for a while now, so I'm not sure what the issue was.
Besides this little issue, I'm very happy with the case and I got a great deal on Amazon.
I have the flip cover version of this one.
It's definitely thinner and more form fitting than the CP12, but since it doesn't WORK (It just doesn't charge my Z Ultra in any capacity, yet receives a charge itself), I can't use it. It's a shame, because I like it comparatively.
Mine is a pain to get it to work...like most of the time the phone wont recognize that is trying to charge it. When it does it works great but its a rarity :/

[Q] GPS no lock or satellites

I don't seem to ever see any satellites.
I was wondering if there is possibly a setting I could have wrong or if I have to assume there is a hardware problem with the watch. Any advice welcome. I saw Loki's post on speeding up GPS lock but since I never see any satellites, I don't think that has any help. Unfortunately, I don't know how to read the Engineering Location pages. But I'd be happy to pull screenshots or anything in exchange for help.
Thanks

Have you tryed getting a GPS lock with a DatA connection. I was having an issue also but once I tried GPS while connected to wifi the watch received the GPS data it needed quickly. Once that happen my GPS was fine. I used GPS status from the PS. To track the sat.

Tried with and without data. With and without airplane mode. I tried following Loki's guide. But no matter how long I'm outside with clear view of sky, no matter which app I use, I never see a single satellite. I'm beginning to think the antenna might not be connected inside the watch.

I'm in the same situation as you. One day, the GPS stopped working, until today. I have tried 'GPS fix' and similar apps from Google Play, but none of them seem to work. As you, I think this is a hardware problem, but I don´t know how to check or fix it.

Others have experienced this. it is a bad connection with the ant. or the connection is broken off in the strap. It seems that everyday there are more and more issues.
I checked the antenna connector inside the watch. Popped it off and felt it click back on, but still no luck.
Found the problem. It looks as though the GPS antenna connector cannot be touching the metal shield of the component right next to it. Of course, the wire comes out of the band directly over this piece and folds over it to reach the connector. Currently I'm insulating it with a torn off piece of paper. If it happens again, I'll try some kind of tape.
The brass metal plug was touching the side of the round black component (vibration motor) ?
I suggested this might be the problem to others with poor wifi and BT reception, but word that came back was that there was no contact. That plug can rotate over to touch the metal !

You're lucky I don't feel like working today. But I take no responsibility if you break your watch more than it was or in entirely new and different ways.
Open the watch. 4 screws.
Lift out the battery
Take out the plastic spacer. 2 screws (Red). Yes, I lost one.
The charger connector lifts straight up and off (Blue). Also, there is some glue or something that holds it in the upper right quadrant of the picture. And the sticker in the bottom right sticks to electrical components on the board below. I believe it may be made to tear if you lift this spacer out but mine didn't.
Here is the guts of the watch.
Zoom in on the bottom left quadrant showing metal of antenna connector touching... something else metal.
I just put a bit of label on the metal something to prevent touching.
Good luck!

Thank you very much! :good: I will try it.
Regrettably, it didn´t work for me. The Truesmart still doesn´t detect any satellite. :crying: But tomorrow I will try again.
Anyway, thank you very much for your help. And I´m sure your photos will help many people who have this issue.
The connector on the cable may also be damaged. I have two with bad connectors, one came off and one is pulled just far enough that the cable does not make contact to the internal points in the connector.
I reopened the watch and try the jdommer´s solution, but the result is the same.
I also have disconnected the antenna cable and I have reconnected several times, but it still doesn´t detect any satellites.
However, the watch has a curious behavior. It doesn´t detect any satellites at any time. However, if I let Sygic working, after 5 or 6 minutes, it detects the place where I am, even though undetected satellites (so I can´t use it to navigate or sports tracking).
That might be from WiFi or cell tower location, not GPS.

I have same problem. 2 months GPS worked good, but now it dosn't work.
This app solved my problem: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest
I was getting 9 satellites but no fix.
What I did after installing the app:
1. Settings>>Datum and I chosed the one located closest to my country
2. Settings>> Clear AGPS
3. Settings>> Update AGPS
4. Got a fix with 5 satellites after 10 seconds from my window. For comparison my Note 8 got a fix in only 2 seconds but it's antenna is a few times bigger than the one Omate has
Followed jdommer's picture guide using a small piece of paper to insulate the wire and my gps works again! Thanks

How to open the watch

(The problem is solved, you can find the solutions in first 2 pages)
I saw some pictures of the Amazfit watches that had been teardown.
I tried to do it, but the watch is glued and fitted hard, so I couldn't open it even with a heater.
Therefore I started this thread to ask for help, for me and people who need opening the watch because of battery drain issues or ...
And secondly, asking developers: is it possible to disable the watch's microphone by software operations, so that it stop using battery?
Thanks in advance
Sadegh
In the following I gathered all posts about opening the watch. I hope they help.
Unfortunately they did not said how exactly they opened the watch without damage.

Hi Guys,
lot of users complain on draining battery by Amazfit Pace ... but no one check hardware. Today I opened my watch and I found probably root cause of problem. Reset hole is not enough tight and semiconductors (rest switch and probably pressure sensor) are totally corroded as on photo.

And this is the damage after I tried to open it.
I afraid to continue and totally break it.
if you warm the smartwatch well with the hair dryer the glue becomes soft and the device opens easily not damaging anything, to glue again you should have indicated glue to be appropriately isolated and later take off again if necessary.
I open my with cuter and help with hair dresser...simple..
Thanks for your answers my friend
I'll try to open again.
And can somebody, a developer or ... help us to disable the microphone by software operations?
If this be possible I think it stop battery drain problem.

The problem isn't the mic, it's not active all the time... The problem is most probably due to a corroded barometer, that it will drain energy either being active or not. The only solution it to remove or replace the whole module.

But what if the barometer be disabled? could it stop battery draining? or is it possible to disable it buy software or ROM measurement?

I warmed it up for more than 10 mins.
But no luck its too fitted and I couldn't open it.
For me it work like that, i think all devices are the same.

I used a better hair dryer and warmed it up.
That worked thank you and all friends who helped.
Now I have opened it and have this on the image:
how to reach the mic and barometer? and how to cut them?
and is it possible to only remove the barometer?
Thanks again
Here is the pic:
Ok I found it
there is no need to open the screws just insert some sharp thing like a needle in the hole of mic and take it out slowly.
Now I removed the mic and barometer, I am testing the battery life.
I hope it back to normal 5 good days
It seems removing mic and barometer worked.
In airplane mode, after 24 hour the battery from 98% is now 92%.
only 6 percent a day.
I removed the barometer from the board and now only the mic is on it.
Then I inserted the board again to the watch.
The battery is OK.
The mic is working. so I only lost the barometer.
Thats very satisfying .
mine still 86% after 24 hours, maybe i will try open the watch, hope someone can make a tutorial video how to remove mic and barometer
Sadegh, do u glue back the watch to retain at least waterproofing this watch ?

Your battery seems OK.
But anyway after opening the watch
The only problem of battery draining is barometer that fortunately can be removed
you easily can take out the mic and barometer.
Then remove the barometer from the board and turn back the mic to the watch.
your mic works again and the battery will be OK hopefully.

could you show us the picture where to remove the mic and to remove the barometer?
also, when you glued back the watch, what kind of glue did you use?
appreciate to hear from you soon so i can used my watch as regular as i could. thank you in advance.

Stratos: Heart rate monitor broken due to humidity

Hello all,
I have an issue with the heart rate monitor of my Stratos. This is the second watch I've been using since I had to return the first that I bought and vendor gave me a refund.
First watch that I returned was because after 1 month of use, heart rate monitor stopped working all of a sudden.
Second watch that I am using now, and it just happens the same again. Heart rate monitor stopped working all of a sudden but with this second watch the new thing is that it also started to get hot and drain its battery really fast.
I think I've tried every rom and software procedure that can be done to reset the watch to see if I could repair it.
Probably there's a hardware issue but since it's the second time it happens to me I'd like to ask you if anyone had experienced the same issue and has any clue about the origin of the hardware issue.
I'm guessing somehow humidity has got inside the watch and some circuit has corroded. What I'm sure about is that I'm not buying any Huami sportswatch anymore xD!
This happened with the first watch: you have unlocked bootloader, flashed ROMs and then returned it for a refund?
About the watch, obviously it's not normal... If the watch gets warm while charging either:
a. Battery is dead (it should not happen to a new watch, unless it came damaged from factory and/or was damaged by misuse);
b. Metallic contacts from charger and/or watch are wet or dirty;
c. Bad power source: what you've been using to charge it?
Either way, flashing ROMs (specially custom ROMs) don't fix anything, it's a myth (and it voids warranty by the way, you cannot return a watch that had bootloader unlocked).
I know warrant is void. But it wasn't covered by warranty anymore so I just had to try something just in case it would work.
Thanks for your answer.
To charge the watch I've been using a Xiaomi charger from my phone and the original base provided by Amazfit.
I didn't do anything with the watch that it was not supposed to stand. And heart rate monitor stopped working twice. So I was wondering if anyone else had similar issues just to learn how and why this happens. I don't think it can be fixed, but I'm really curious about why this happens. I was a Xiaomi wearables fan until now and I'd like to know what to answer when my friends ask me why my Stratos heart rste monitor stopped working AGAIN
Finally I've managed to disassembly one of tje watches and my intuition is confirmed.
Humidity got inside the watch and corroded the circuit of heart rate monitor + battery pins.

I think corrosion got inside the watch throught the what I think is the barometer hole. There was some 'dirt' on it.
5atm watch they say... Probably not in a hot and humid weather. So disappointed with this. I really liked that watch.
Just to continue playing with the watch: Anyone think that corroded circuit could be fixed by cleaning it with an ultrasonic cleaner?
I've already tried to clean it with a toothbrush and I've been able to remove most of the corrosion but there's some of it remaining and it's impossible to remove it without damaging the components.
Water got inside a Stratos? Did you use it while showering/bathing or sauna?
On Pace it's possible to remove the barometer module, it will fix the battery drain if the cause was in the module only, of course.
I didn't use it at bath or shower and I've not been in a sauna for years.
I do sweat a lot, specially my hands. I live by the sea so I think that combined with high temperature weather plus high humidity is the cause of the humidity to get inside the watch.
By the way, there was no water inside the watch, but parts were corroded
Hi PierreBarrayon, did you manage to fix the problem. I have the same issue!

On my Stratos the heart rate monitor is broken as well.
The small rectangular glass that protect led get out the device. This certainly the entry point for humidity.
Looks like it was not well glue.
How do you manage to open the watch.

Same here the heart rate glass felt down. I did some mistakes keeping the watch in hot shower but i didnt expect that everything else is working fine no battery drain. It will be my last xiaomi wearable becouse my mi band 2 got the screen dim and barely can see on darkness.

Same here too. Days ago I felt like burning an then it shutted off, now heart rate is not working and the glass is a little loose.
Think we made the same mistake, my miband 2 screen also dimmed out...
That is a shame, they sell unfinished products and we and up buying.
Problems too
Hi there !
Had the same problem. The small disk on the heart rate monitor has come loose and the watch has frozen. After opening and cleaning everything well again. Now I have the following situation. Everything works when the clock is connected with USB. After disconnecting from USB everything works. As soon as the screen darkens, the clock freezes immediately and only a hardware reset stops the process. This is repeated after a restart.
Does somebody has any idea?

Open the watch and disconnect HR sensor, probably it is damaged if it works fine afterwards (without HR, of course).

Thank you ! I can not believe it. After the heart sensor was disconnected, there was unfortunately no improvement. But then I separated the individual contacts one after the other and then the watch runs when the microphone contact is detached. :good::good:
Why is there a microphone with no function? or what is it for ?
After a few switch-on processes, the problem is back.

Stratos has no mic, probably you're talking about the barometer. If disconnecting them didn't work then I am afraid moisture damaged something else, not worth fixing it...
Do you believe this problem will occur on stratos 3? I'm interested in buying a smartwatch for fitness. I don't want any of these problems.
the same here...
the heart rate monitor stopped working after 8 month of usage... after that in 2 weeks the small glass falls off. I newer was swimming with watch (or in sauna), just only sometimes shower after treadmill or weightlifting ...
now it works without heart rate monitor.. (gps is ok.)

It looks the Stratos 3 has a bigger glass on the bottom, but iI'm not sure the problem is solved...
The HR window on mine came loose in a pool and died. I left it to dry overnight hoping it'd be ok. In the morning it was hot and the back was warped. I could hear the battery leaking. I threw it away immediately. I can't take it home from vacation on a plane to submit a warranty claim, and I don't want that thing anywhere near my wrist again. I was a big amazfit fan. Now I have a Galaxy watch active 2 and I'm not going back.
heart rate monitor
Please do not know where it can be provided? the heart rate sensor + charging connectors, it is one circuit that can be easily disconnected.
Hacking the Stratos
Eventhrough there are parts for Stratos LCD and battery on aliexpress. I am still not able to find the stratos charging / pulse sensor ribbon. The closest thing is a used Stratos on ebay.
Messaged Amazfit as well but like many owners, I have received no response.
So here is how I take things into my own hands:
1. Watch was shutting down / overheating and pulse sensor windows eventually pops out
2. Open up watch with heatgun (low heat ~ 200C) and spudger. Notice the corrosion caused by water damage.
3. Clean up the mess with 99% alcohol and flux, desolder the capacitors and apply silicone conformal coating
Glue everything back and funny thing is led blinks in continuous heartrate monitoring but I don't trust the reading and led doesn't blink in any exercise mode.
HRM on Stratos is nonsense to begin with. I have better result connecting my bluetooth chest strap with the watch anyways.
Have similar problem with the water resistant seal on a amazfit bip before, so fool me twice...
