What's holding back development? - Huawei MediaPad M5 Questions & Answers

I know it's not without issues, but this tablet has a lot going for it. So... What do you think is holding back development?

That it's a treble device and you don't need bespoke development???

Lack of recognition as to how good this tablet is and how much potential it has.
It's good out of the box and once the bloat has been dealt with and Nova is dropped on it? It's a great tablet.
For what it cost me £0 it is without doubt the best tablet on the market.

Once it is rooted and debloated and running Nova what do you need developed other than custom ROM for the sake of custom ROM?

The biggest reason, IMO, is future updates.

AOSP

Are there no AOSP builds for this tab? Also why is everyone so gay for TW? It is hideous.
Honeycomb source isn't in AOSP, and I doubt there's much development interest in getting an AOSP Gingerbread build up and running for the tablet.
Regards,
Dave
I've read multiple stories saying 3.2 has been pushed to AOSP.
People like Touchwiz because it is a pretty nice step up. And in this case, the improvements are noticeable. As for AOSP Honeycomb? Well, you can always build it yourself if you want it that bad.
tw is nice. fixed all the little nagging problems on my tab
I'd rather return it since Samsung is pulling a Sony by selling you one thing then changing after you buy it. I thought people would have been pissed about this but it seems everyone is fine with Sammy running balls deep in ya.

Really? Go take a look!
I take it you mean posts like this one?
Note the update which says:
Editor’s Note: the sources that were released are the kernel sources and not the Rom ones. The latter are licensed under Apache, thus follow a different set of regulations. I apologize for the confusion.

There is no AOSP Honeycomb source beyond the GPL'd portions, which essentially means the just kernel, and not Android.

Dave

Samsung already made it clear months before the tab was release that they were gonna put touchwiz on it. They never meant to have it as stock honeycomb, they did that at last minute in order to bring honeycomb 3.1 instead of 3.0. Also, no ones forcing you to update.

Please do, there's a shiny new Xoom with your name on it somewhere. Then, instead of Samsung going balls deep in you, the Xoom can go deep in your balls, heavy as it is.
But hey, it's "stock Honeycomb", doesn't matter that stock Honeycomb sucks, 3.01 through 3.2, since you gotta have that neon and black.

Then don't update to TW. Or backup your current rom, and install the TW to see if it's better or not.

So you can the best of both, standard 3.1 visuals and apps with the TW speed.

TF201 Came in! Looking for a method in rooting

Just received my TF201 Asus Transformer Prime today.
http://i40.tinypic.com/21dlpc9.jpg
I'm looking for a method in rooting the device.
I'm aware that RazorClaw is suppose to work on the device but could anyone confirm that it there are no bugs which would possibly brick the device etc?
PS. This is my first tablet / android device so please bare with me.
Thanks In Advance!

I think you will be fine rooting that way. There is a site that reviewed th tfp and they used that root method and they said it went well with no issues.
What the hurry ?
It might not be a bad idea to wait until the unit is burned in, and you are satisfied that everything is working perfectly before mucking around (i.e. rooting). Then, if you have problems, you can more certain that the problems are attributable to the rooting.
Enjoy your Prime
Could anyone brief me with the cons of rooting the device? :|
Research first, especially with this being your first android tab. Don't be over anxious n go bricking your device..lol.
Was there an immediate notification for an update after you opened it? Razor claw supposedly doesn't work after Asus pushed a system update. It was rooted prior to update on in-store demo model.
What's reason for eagerness to root so quickly? There are no custom roms or anything out yet. It's not 3G so no tethering. If you root and uninstall system files/bloatware you won't be able to do OTA update to Icer Cream Sandwich. Which means you will have to wait till someone here makes a version, which might not for a while.
Sorry that this is off topic, but does the color you ordered seem true to the advertised pics?

Good thing we have search engines....
1. Technically voids warranty and may not allow OTA updates.
2. Possibility of a brick if you don't know WTF you're doing.
Huummmm... cons of rooting..... hummm... don't rush, still thinking.... possible OTA update issue, very unlikely, but still possible I guess; most of the time the OTA will just erase the root.... uummmm yeah, that's about all I can think of.
Also, guess there's a very small chance of a soft brick... but I would tend to think that the root will either take, or it wont... but there's still a chance I guess.
IMO, the benefits far outweigh the "possible" consequences.
Wish I had mine, I do it in a heart beat.

These days when there's a one-click for everything...it's very hard to jack anything up. Now, going in manually...there's always risk of operator error.

With this being his first tablet and Android device period, seems like he wants to root just for the sake of saying he's rooted. You know very well what happens to a lot of new people to Android that just jump in and want to root w/o thoroughly doing the homework first. Lmao

ATM, other than de-bloating there is very little reason for root.
Does anyone know by any chance the official release date of ICS?
I'm aware that it has been "released" to certain phones like the Samsung Galaxy, but when would it be made available to the Asus Transformer Prime? o_o

Yeah, no other reason... except de-odexing, themeing, TI Backup, freezing, editing database files, changing VM Heap size, installing custom scripts, overclocking/undervolting custom kernels, disabling startup processes.... that's just off the top of my head.

No Official date yet but could be by end of this month or mid Jan. It literally could be anyday. Just keep a lookout on an update notification popping up. Or even go to settings and about. Then click on system or whatever to see of it searches and finds an update for your device.

Everybody says root root. The new roms come out fast... I did it with my original tf and roms don't come out that fast especially if Asus is going to push ICS soon. I'd wait a while especially since a lot of potential devs won't get their unit for several weeks or months!

[Q] Exynos 7420 development

Ive always been an HTC man and watched both live streams to decide my next phone. Im now pretty convinced its going to be the S6 Edge. The one thing thats worrying me is the development side of things with a Samsung own chip. Are they pretty good at supporting developers with documentation and such? I know when HTC went with the Tegra chip in the One X there were lots of problems with S-Off and that sort of thing. Is there likely to be any of that here or is it not a problem?
Exynos is closed source. They are not as open as say Qualcomm. Kernel is GPL so we will have custom stock kernel and ROMs. However... Cm12 and aosp is going to be hard AND buggy.
Custom stock ROM's are better than nothing, especially if you can get that bloatware out of the phone, even with a 128GB option (my GS6 Edge of choice) I still don't want all of the AT&T Bloatware and GB's of wasted space. Hiding is not enough for me.
are we gonna be able to achieve root?
it's all I'm interested in first phase, just want to remove some blootware from sammy, install a real UI and remove ads.

You will most probably never see a AOSP based ROM for s6 I'm afraid. And if you do, it will be so bug infested that it will take months to make it a daily. Then there is the stability issue when hack building like that...
Just check the note 4 exynos page... One half functioning cm11 (kudos to the developer).
So yeah... Stock ROM, debloated with a custom kernel with kcal or something similar. I'm happy. Maybe even themed to aosp and 360dpi...
Dreams...
That sounds bad . It seems i have to think again then. Maybe if we get Samsung based Roms like echoerom i might be tempted

Root and Knox
Hey guys
One of my colleagues has a Galaxy Alpha and is kinda jealous of me being able to stream to AirPlay-devices etc because my phone is rooted. So I said that I'd help him obtain rood, but soon discovered that the Alpha is not possible to root without trashing Knox.
So... does anybody know if that will also be the case with The S6 Edge? I NEED that phone, but I also NEED root... and I'd like to keep knox...
Also, The GS2 had both overclocking and undervolting options available... do you gus reckon that that will be possible on the S6Edge ?
- Martin
If you NEED root, don't buy it until root is confirmed. No one knows at this point how hard/easy it will be, or how long it will take to achieve.
looks like Chainfire has it already;
at least he posted a link in the original dev forum.

When will we see custom development?

Hey guys,
since I don't know how well or quickly the Xiaomi community is working, I was wondering when you think we will see the first custom ROMs and Kernels.
Especially an OC Kernel, I could imagine, would improve the experience on this phone alot.
Thanks!
It will take long time cause of accessibility problems. Very long.
Probably never.
Ah surely
Without jokes, there Will be custom developement in mid future?
No. Not before mid 2020

You can install any keyboard. I love GBoard, but you can use SwiftKey or whatever you want.
Just search for "Keyboard" in Play Store. If you want something very "raw", look for keyboards in F-Droid.
I spoke with some of the developers of custom roms and no one is interested in developing for this phone.
It really seems like there won't be any custom rom/kernel anytime soon and probably, maybe, never.
We will ahvr to stick to the stock rom.
Anyone interested in starting a reward campaign here?
First fully functioning custom rom gets the cash bounty
I'm putting in $10
Is that a feature? I would defo be willing to throw in some money!

Thanks for your information sir, could i ask why they are not interested in developing for this phone? Personally i think is a pretty interesting hardware
As MoneyFist, I also would donate for a good featured custom ROM ?
I don't understand why there are people saying we will not get custom roms. I think, the main reason for now, is that we have no sources, or I least I can't find them. Once we have sources, devs will be able for, at least, compile something
Sources have been released a while ago. I think once the phone will be widely available in India, we will see devs creating stuff...hopefully.

Development Woes Black Shark

Just checked the specs of this device and it suddenly averted my plans of purchasing an Asus ROG Phone 2 given the specs and features it offers - and considering that that device doesn't have any working Custom Roms (hey the reason we're here at xda). Now question is, is this device series famous enough to warrant the attention of the devs here? Considering that the Black Shark 2 doesn't have any working roms, even at this point, am I asking for a miracle? Would like to hear your thoughts fellas. Thanks

Hoping for TWRP, decrypt, and Magisk. That's enough to get a 7.1" phone (real objective). Stylus is a bonus.
I really do hope we get root. I'm planning to get one soon simply cuz it seems like the best option for gaming or watching watching movies. Even if the ROG phone 3 comes out later, it won't be any significantly better except the bigger battery but the charging on this phone certainly makes up for that.
I have the same concerns as OP. Currently have a Pixel 4XL and was thinking of moving to the OnePlus 8 Pro. However, this phone seems promising but it would probably be a deal breaker if there isn't any development for it. I'd love to see root with an AOSP ROM.
Just goes to show how appreciative we should be of the developers making all these goodies for us noobs

I agree. With the current issues going around OnePlus display issues, and that really high price tag coupled with the fact that I game alot and OnePlus tends to heat up rather quickly and gets hot to the touch real quick (currently running a 6T) I decidedly to pull the trigger on the Blackshark 3 pro instead. Really hoping for development here, as I think it's a fantastic device that's largely underrated.

The issue is mainly blackshark not allowing a bootloader unlock rather than anything else. If we get a supportive community I think it's possible overtime. I'd really just be happy with magisk and a few mods. The phone is already really fast and has great battery life (if you pair it with the 65W charger)
