Hi there, I was wondering how to change the stock file manager. I don't mean just setting a different manager as default. Because even then, android uses the stock file manager for use within other apps (like wallpaper apps) for uploading files.
So how do I replace the file manager completely? I have the same question for the default gallery app too. It doesn't look the way I want and it's driving me nuts. I didn't simply uninstall the system apps because I fear it might break something.
The same question
Try disabling the stock one if it really bugs you.
Uploads can be a bit witchy...

You may be stuck with it. I've noticed similar issues on my 10+ running on Pie.
Pretty much ignored the slight inconvenience as I reckon it be more trouble than it's worth to fix.
May play will it a bit and try to optimize if I get really bored... more likely that I'll light up another cigar and chill though
You could try clearing the app data on the ones that default to the stock file Manager.
May have to go deeper into the system apks that manage file interlinks.
Clear system cache.
I can do all uploads but it's far from ideal... requiring 2 retries sometimes to get the right menu index. Sometimes it takes 2 light up attempts to get the cigar burning proper too
I should ignore it too cause I do not have enough technical knowledge

My stock 10+ does similar bs. You have more options than me if you're rooted. The trick is learning them; it can be a steep, time consuming learning curve.
The biggest reason I haven't rooted as well as voiding the extended warranty I have.

Okay, digging deep into Android's source.... not for the feint of heart, and not for those whose coding skills are somewhere just above, "Hello, world!" (Me)
Here's the deal. We all know, with Froyo, Google disabled task killers. No app can kill another app. I for one am happy, because killing all apps when your screen goes off is stupid, pointless, and all kinds of harmful. Well, happy but for one little thing....
Killing other apps still does have a purpose! Specifically, in my case, I want to replace my long-press home option with a cool app switcher that also gives me the ability to kill a running app if I know I am done with it for the day and it refuses to die naturally. I'm sure there are other legitimate uses for it, such as killing everything before a benchmark. Sure, these are very specific, uncommon uses, but a thousand apps on the Market exist for specific, uncommon uses, and I think that most hackers/modders with su here would know better than to let a task killer run rampant. Anyone wanna discuss re-enabling this on 2.2?
Edit: I should correct myself. I keep saying "app," what I mean is "service." I know you can still stop (most) apps, but not services. Which keeps a lot of apps running, despite your best efforts. Forgive me for misusing the words
wait task managers dont actually kill in 2.2? This is news to me, as one I have downloaded seems to work fine..

Taskiller will show the app was killed. I'm sure many others will too. But kill an app, then go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Running, and you'll see that it's still running.

Forgive the obvious question but can't the services just be killed by a root request/process? If so, creating an interface for this should be easy as pants.
Of course, root is required but that shouldn't be a constraint.

True. But wouldn't it make more sense to allow the dozens of non-root apps that already exist to do this, rather than have to re-write an app that does the exact same thing, but has to use su? It would be safer, too. Running everything as root all the time runs contrary to the whole idea of Linux. It's better to give apps the permissions they need, rather than give everything unlimited power.

Oh, I see. It might be useful but that's the essence of the Froyo changes... it can't be done now without root. You've have to compromise the security model... probably not a feasible route...
I think you are mistaken, maybe in Manage Applications it still shows it as "stoppable", however... I just did a test.
1. Opened DDMS on my PC.
2. Took note of an app to test with (speedtest) that was currently running.
3. Opened Advanced Task Manager.
4. Killed speedtest with task manager and watched it disappear from the running process list in DDMS.
Obviously ATM was able to kill the task. And, just so you know, it did not start running again. Also, it was removed from the "Running" tab in Manage Applications, so you are double wrong.
And, in case you were going to further the argument that you meant to say "Services", I just killed the PhoneFusion VM service with ATM, and it was removed from the running process list in DDMS.

Or create something that uses su to kill these processes for third-party apps, without the need for them to have su. Similar to superuser apk, but on a more specific level. Or, we could make it even better, and have superuser hand out specific, user-approved permissions, rather than permit root access as a whole to any app.
Apparently there's not a lot of interest in this, but I thought it would make an interesting discussion.
WTF? I had DLNA frozen because I never used it, and I just went through all my frozen apps and completely uninstalled them if I decided I REALLY didn't want them (and if I decided that having them frozen for a while hasn't caused any problems). I uninstalled DLNA and now it's constantly force closing...how the heck is that happening??? I've had to pull my battery just now, and I'm rebooting. Why wouldn't it do this while it was frozen...isn't freezing basically like uninstalling?

Well upon reboot I haven't seen any more problems, and it's been a while. But yeah you're right, I'm sure I'll open up another app or some process later on will call on DLNA and it'll start force closing again...
Anyway, I guess my concern is why it even did that? Don't most of the ROMs and P-ROMs us Atrix users have used get rid of bloat, including the DLNA app? And why didn't it do anything while it was frozen?

Don't be too sure. Our guys have a lot cooking and I don't think everyone will jump ship to CM. I for one won't, at least not until I tried what our devs will cook. CM is great for outdated phones with lesser power.
We'll find out soon enough!
After installing Viper ROM, I had a brilliant idea to uninstall a bunch of apps that I don't use.
So I wonder, did that break the zip alignment? Should I go back and reflash it?
Thank you!

The only symptom is my general paranoia I just recently read about what zip alignment means, and started wondering whether or not I should have done it.
As far as what I deleted. Swype, Sense launcher, most of sprint stuff, google music (I use the other music player), google movie player, ringtone widget, live wallpapers, mail, gmail, clock, etc.
So far the phone works fine, quadrant scores come out a bit lower than what some people mentioned (comes out at about 4800). My point is that I did all that stupid stuff to make it work faster, but I have a nagging feeling that I may have made it worse. It's not noticeable either way, I'm just trying to understand it better.
Hello,
I've been on stock kernel/OS since I bought my unbranded I9100 some time ago, that means Gingerbread 2.3.4, I9100XXKI1, Kernel 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468 (rooted, of course).
I'm thinking about trying CM9 or CM10, just for fun. I think I know pretty well what to expect, but am trying to figure out if there are things I will be missing. As far as I can tell, the following will change significantly:
- Touchwiz launcher replaced, of course. No biggie.
- Swype will be gone, right? I played around with CM way back, and there seemed to be some discussions about how to take Swype with you, but I assume this will be rather hard when going from Gingerbread to JB? Or is there a good way to keep it (without buying it separately)? I like it rather a lot...
- The four hubs (Social Hub etc.) will be gone. Good riddance, as well, I've never used any of them.
- I've not used any of the Samsung remote features (to locate a stolen/lost device; OTA, or KIES), so I guess they will be gone, but I won't miss them.
Is there anything else I've missed that's been added by Samsung? I want to avoid a problem where I don't actually notice anything important missing at first, and then noticing weeks later...
Thank you for your time!
I noticed my camera was missing on one of them.

No tv out. No fm radio. If swype is the keyboard typing style, i dont think thats gone, but i will check.
Camera is still better in stock touchwiz. Also, clear ram from recent apps isnt there.

You could use titanium backup to backup all of your (system) apps. If something (important) turns out to be missing, you can restore it easily. Apart from that, flash it, you won't be disappointed. Good luck with exploring all the possibilities.

Apps only in touchwiz wont work in aosp roms since they are deeply integrated within the touchwiz framework, so no use backup app system apps nor system data. Restoring system data may cause problems ranging from bootloops to force closes.

Alright, the clock. I use that a lot, all of it (alarm + timer + stopwatch). That would be a bummer to loose, I guess there will be some useful replacements on the market though.
There are plenty of camera apps around. Can I safely assume that the picture quality (as it is) will be the same as with the stock camera app? I use the camera for taking pictures, I need no effects, online stuff etc. around photos. In fact I am not that happy with the stock camera, as I find it tough to shoot a photo when I don't see the screen... so I'll be happy to hunt for a camera app that supports some of the hardware buttons for shooting.

Well yes, but I'll have to register/pay for it, or don't I?
Is there a way to see which app is Samsung specific, on the phone itself? Or is basically *any* app that shipped with it either in gapps or by Samsung/Touchwiz?
Thanks a lot, again.

Try using an app freezer first then if there's no negative impact un install frozen app. Of course do a back up of each app incase there's a problem later. That way you don't have to reflash rom.

Just get the NO-Sense_user.txt from here and use Notepad++ to customize it just remove the # from anything you want to remove
I could if you'd like but it would be better to edit one for yourself as I probably have A LOT of things deleted that you might want to keep and might have kept a lot of what you want deleted. It's really simple to edit as you are only putting in or taking out a # sign.
