Hi,
main question - can it be hardware or software issue? As it is my wife's phone I did not notice when it happened. As a result the autorotation is not working and screen does not turn off.
HiCare SmartDiagnosis shows red, third party apps do not see sensors existing etc.
Any ideas ?

Hi,
Recently I'm having a problem with the LED flash, whenever I try to use it either to take a photo or on the flashlight app, it makes a short flicker and then shuts down. In case I want to take a picture at night it is particularly annoying because the flash terminates before the picture is actually taken so everything comes out darkened.
I'm wondering if anyone else ever experienced this problem as well. I'm not sure this is a hardware problem like a busted flash, or maybe there some software bug making this happen.

I never had this issue.
Have you already tried to install the S2 Camera Update from Samsung Apps?
It tests if you need the firmware update for the S2 camera and installs it if needed.
Additionally you can test the flash "hardware" by using any of the flashlight apps from the Market. Just to check, if the LED works fine.
Good luck !
Thanks for the reply!
I will check Samsung camera app, though I think my firmware is up to date.
As for the torch app, I have tried using it and it shows the same kind of behavior.
The only thing that makes me think this is a software issue is that the ffash does turn on for fraction of a second.

i know, eh?
I am having the exact same problem.
the flash goes on for the metering, then flashes a few times quickly but never in sync with the shutter, it seems..
sometimes torch applications work but never for very long (if i turn it off, sometimes i can't turn it back on, i mean... rarely problems with it not staying on)
i've had a few pictures showing up with vertical bars (almost like multiple exposure times) when i've forced the flash on when it wasn't really needed.
Also being driven insane by this problem.
im having the same problem with my s3. Did you fix it?
any solutions?
mine is exactly the same. has anybody found the solution? would be glad to know. thanks
hey guys, i got this problem and it is annoying. Everything work for few hours but it stopped and after some thime it starts again. I tried hard and soft reset and after it, phone works fine for half a day and again start to work bad. Here is list of problem and it comes all together and disapear together.
1. the phone compass does not work any more
2. gyro doesnt work (so no more racing games)
3. auto screen rotation does not work
4. cannnot set the screen brightness to auto mode
5. on call screen doesn't go off when u bring the phone closer to your ear.(due to this the calls get disconnected when the screen touchs your face)
6. the lights in the windows key, back key & the search key does not light anymore.
7. cannot run the Here lens app (says your device does not support motion sensor)
But every thing else works perfect. is there any body else who faced the same issue or is it only me?
And this phone was originaly on swedish firmware but my brother instaled UK, but it was normal for some time.
TNx
did you use screen protector?
you can try hard reset or reflash, but if problem continue maybe is hardware problem
no i dont have screen protector.
My brother said that he was found one ROM on wich the phone work normally, but it is pre-Amber ROM, and after upda is started to screw again.

For me it all started when updating my Lumia OTA. After the update was installed my Lumia was stuck in a boot loop only showing the Nokia logo on a black background and rebooting afterwards without even getting to the blue WP logo screen.
To get rid of the boot loop I flashed different types of firmwares I got via NaviFirm 3.2 with the Nokia Care Suit onto my 920. Some of them solved the boot loop problem but unfortunately the above mentioned errors occured. Some of them got me stuck in a boot loop again. But I haven't found a single rom for which the gyroscope, accelerometer, proximity sensor work yet...
Before the OTA update I could use the nokia lense app without any hick ups now it says that it is not able to install the app due to missing sensors.
So it seems to me that these are software related issues rather than hardware failure but I have no idea what happened during the failed OTA update that might cause these errors.
Here is a list of the roms I flashed onto my 920, maybe I will try some more. Unfortunately I do not know that firmware version installed before trying to update OTA.

Ok, so I have installed the 8.1 preview for developer firmware. After installation finished all of a sudden the lights of the capacitive buttons lit up. After turning on and off my phone several times rotation started working. Then I installed the facebook app. It crashed and told me some sensors weren't working properly. Rotation stopped working and the lights on the buttons went out. I uninstalled facebook and restarted several times also doing soft resets until the lights came back on.
Now after 1 day of using my phone I realized that even the proximity sensor is working fine when answering calls...I am confused but happy...Maybe I will try to reinstall the FB apps the next days...However I would recommend trying the 8.1 preview for those experiencing the issues above!
I know that it's an old post, but I'm having this issue and this is the only post I found on the internet where the symptoms are the same as mine. After lots of tries I found out in part what's the culprit of the issue: anytime my phone is loaded with backgroud operations (mostly when involving data communication), the sensors stop working correctly and I have to either restart the phone or wait until all the background jobs are done.
To avoid this issue from happening 8/10 times a day, I had to deny background operations to almost every app (only Cortana had background execution) so that happens only once or twice a day and always next to operations like app store updates, intense internet usage, intense facebook/whatsapp usage (since latest updates you can see arrows next to cellular/wi-fi icons when data is being exchanged, and during this issue the arrows, uploading or downloading, are always working intensely).
Microsoft support doesn't help and says that must be an HW issue, but I reproduced it on 2 different Lumia using my account, so it's not HW related, but still they don't take into consideration that and, obviously, I don't have a way to debug the OS runtime to find out what happens in such moments.
I too have the same problem on lumia 920 for the past years. Very irritating. Please let me know if you have solutions.

Today when I dialed someone, the screen switched off, like when we bring it to our face, cover the sensor, tapping didnt do anything, only pressing power did bring back the screen, after that all was normal, except it wouldnt switch off the screen when the sensor was covered again
Did another call, the same, rebooted the phone but still the same. I use Dialer+, but tested with standard Phone app and the same happened, any suggestions
Yesterday all worked fine, the only apps updated yesterday where: Google, Calendar, MoboPlayer and Shazam

Same happened calling with Whatsapp...
No one
The proximity sensor seems to work fine otherwise
I've had the same issue on seemingly random occasions. Lots of people suggested checking the proximity sensor data using AIDA64 but it all checked out fine.
Only thing that worked for me was to recalibrate the motion sensor under display settings. Hope that works for you!

I had the same issue on Lollipop, I upgraded to marshmallow and it still exists. It happens at random times, sometimes the proximity sensor works fine but sometimes it kind of freezes and the screen remains off even after a phone call, I have to touch it a bit to make it respond.
Any permanent way of fixing this? Any solution would be very helpful.

Mine never had the problem other than that one day before I upgraded to MM, I have the phone since January. Did you try re-calibrating the sensor like Gator said
Same happened with MM, recalibrated the motion sensor under display settings, and it is working again...
Hi, my mother has the Nokia 7.2 phone and few days ago it began to go to black screen when on a call. It on all the time, and you can't start the screen unless when the call is ended. I see that many has this error, but I couldn't fix the error permanently with any of there advise.
The only thing that seems to work, is going into developer mode, enable "USB-debugging" and "turn sensors off". Then from the top drawer I can turn off sensors. Now the phone doesn't go into black screen when on a call.
But the problem it, that it shouldn't be necessary to do this step, and it will turn off all other sensors also.
My plan is to take it to a service center as it many still be under warranty, but I don't want them to just say "Not hardware failure, wait for an software update" and then I have to pay for basically nothing.
So my question is, can I somehow test the proximity sensor and perhaps others, so I can be sure that it's a hardware or software error?
i have m2001j2g on MIUI 13.0.7 version stock rom, no root. Since i bought the phone 2 years ago i have been having problems with calls. When i put the phone on my ear, the screen goes off as expected but after a while it opens again and my face touches the screen. mostly closing my microphone, and doing other stuff as my face keep touching the unlocked screen. i tried locking my screen before a phone call and tried proximity sensor reset APK. none of them worked. i really like the specs but this problem annoys me. is there any solution?

If it's not hardware problem
You can try calibration/re calibration
Goto my device>all specs>click on kernel version multiple times, it will open CIT menu
And find your desired option.
Just install "Call Proximity Sensor Fix" from playstore.
none of the recommendations worked. only proximity sensor fix app's proximity overrider works but it creates a constant notification. i use blockada for adblocking, it also has a constant notification. they keep changing places, it is annoying
edit: ok, i just unclicked show notifications for both app's, locked them on running applications, remove all restrictions: they are both working now without any notification. call proximity sensor fix it's overrider works dine, thanks all
