Greeting All,
I just bought a "Refurbished" LG V30+ from fleabay and I'm having some issues... It will not update to Oreo.
Below are details:
The phone is factory reset
It has Android 7.1.2
When I try to update it says it is the latest version
The software version is US99810d
The hardware is LG-US998
(I'm on T-mobile)
I tried to use LG Bridge and it does connect (I did a back-up)
HOWEVER, when I click on Software Update I get "Cannot check the software version. Try again"
If I click on "Update error recovery" I get "Your phone information cannot be checked. Contact LG..."
Any ideas??? OR should I send it back???
THANKS

Why would you send it back?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/us998-lg-v30-us998-us99820a040330-kdz-t3786337
See the US998 Oreo KDZ (plural) in Development section and update with one of those. If you care about bootloader unlock and root, don't update to 20D first. Use 20A or 20B, unlock bootloader then update to 20D.
Instructions are in post #1 of the thread.
THANKS!!!!!

Thanks for the info... do appreciate it!!!!!!
I was just wondering why my phone will not automatically do an OTA update to Oreo???
I'm new to this flashing stuff & don't what to brick my phone.
PLUS... I'm concerned that LG Bridge could not read my software version...

1) My three "original" (genuine) US998 bought from B&H Photo were only recognized as having older software one time by LG Bridge. All the other times I had to update them manually with the dev patched LGUP and full image KDZ.
2) It's entirely possible it's not an an "original" US998, but is a converted LS998. Ever since we discovered Frankenstein, so have eBay sellers. Carrier unlocked US998 is more valuable, versatile.
3) Full image KDZ is better than partial image OTA. However, LG Bridge should work to do that, but apparently doesn't.
ChazzMatt.... THANKS!!!
I followed your directions... used LGUP/Uppercut and it worked perfectly!!!!
I'm now on US99820b.
I would like to root my phone (so I can delete some bloat and use advanced features in Tasker).
And then upgrade to US99820d using the "Upgrade" button on LGUP/Uppercut. (I think this correct??)
Could you point me the right direction (I'm a noob with this stuff) to root the phone.
I don't plan of installing any custom ROMs so I don't think I will need TWRP??? Or to unlock the bootloader???
Thanks again for all your help!!!!
Cheers,

Now that you are actually on Oreo, future updates will use dev patched LGUP instead of Uppercut. Uppercut won't work on Oreo.
You need bootloader unlock and TWRP to root.
See the WTF bootloader unlock and root thread.

After that, you can update to 20D.

The link you provided goes to your thread in which the old 20b kdz is for H930 (according to android file host website). Yet the OP has US998.
Is it still ok for people like the OP who have US998 to update to H930 20b KDZ and then unlock bootloader or should we stick with kdz for the US998 only?

No, it doesn't. You're confused about something. The link you quoted in your post goes to all the US998 KDZ thread.
In that thread, all the links go to to specific US998 KDZ -- 20A, 20B, and 20D.
I can't help how Android Host Files categorizes stuff. My folder is simply "V30" -- and inside that I have over a dozen US998, Hong Kong H930DS, Canadian H933, European H930 KDZ. Don't overthink it. If the file name says US998 it's US998.
Here's a screenshot of my Android Host Files folders. All my V30 stuff is inside the V30 folder, period.. If Android Host Files then categorizes that as H930 -- for whatever reason, that's not me and I have no control over that.

See my screenshot. I have v30 folder, a generic Android folder, a Moto Maxx folder. All my V30 KDZ are inside my V30 folder. I do not have any folders or sub-folders called H930. I have an H930 KDZ with a dozen other KDZ inside my V30 folder.
Here's all my V30 KDZ listings:
https://androidfilehost.com/?a=show&w=files&flid=241704
I think Android Host Files calls ALL V30 "H930". I saw another person question another developer about this, "Is it safe to flash because it's in the H930 folder?" I want to yell, Look at the KDZ title!" Of course it's safe.

Questions on Frankenstein phone on US99820b
Hi ChazzMatt,
I also do have a few newbie questions on the Frankenstein phone.
Thanks to you great tutorial I upgraded from AT&T H931 successfully to the US998 (FW: US99820b).
I am not interested in bootloader unlock or rooting the device.
1. Why does the phone not upgrade to US99820d via OTA or LG Bridge? Any way to turn that on?
2. How do I best upgrade to US99820d? Using the Upgrade function in the modified LGUP and your 20d KDZ file?
Would that require a total reset of the phone with all my personal data?
3. Does that also apply to Security Updates? Do they have to be done manually through 20x KDZ updates?
Thanks,
Scusa

Simple "upgrade" using LGUP will update to newer KDZ while keeping data. (This is only if you do not have TWRP.) Make sure you choose "UPGRADE", and not any other option. By the way, 20E is the latest posted in the US998 KDZ thread.
Takes 5 minutes, you keep all your settings and data.

I also have a supposed US998 from ebay and would like to know why it will not update. Does LG block updates to phones if they have been cross-flashed to a different version (if that's what happened)? Are these sellers knowingly selling phones that cannot be updated normally?
Thanks!

I have the exact same situation, V30+ from eBay and no OTAs - had to flash manually. For what I paid for this hardware I'm more than willing to live with the minor inconvenience of having to download a KDZ and flash it for updates, but I would also much prefer it if I could get the OTAs. I'm guessing it has to do with it being Frankensteined and LG only pushing OTAs to it for the original ROM, which it is no longer running...but I would love to know if anyone has a more formal understanding of this issue.

I have three original US998 V30/V30+ and NONE have gotten OTA except one time with Nougat. Since then I've had to manually update via LGUP.
Last weekend, I just manually updated my wife from 20A to 20E via Dev Patched LGUP. Bootloader is still locked on hers, came back from LG with new display a couple of months ago. B&H Photo US998 V30.
I actually prefer full image KDZ to partial image OTA. And while it's true OTA is probably based on IMEI, that doesn't explain why I'm not being offered OTA, at least with hers which has not been modified in any way.
holy crap. I've been away from xda (or flashing phones) for too long!
I just bought v30+ us998 on ebay and it seems like LS998 convert. so in order to unlock bootloader, I have to flash to 20a or b first? Or can I do it now (7.1.2) and update to latest one 20e?
what's good apps these days for rooted phones?

Read WTF INSTRUCTIONS.
For US998 yes, you need early Oreo 20A or 20B to unlock bootloader, install TWRP -- then you can update to US998 20E by flashing 20E "ROM" (stock firmware KDZ in TWRP-FLASHABLE zip file)
@ChazzMatt,
First, thanks for all your help. After I noticed my LG V30+ was not receiving updates, I was able to update the software to US99820b following your instructions. However, I still have one point I am not clear about.
Correct if I am wrong but, from what I understood, you recommend to update to 20a or b in case I am planning to root my device (since rooting after updating to 20d would not work). In case I am not planning to root, Can I use the same process to, using LGUP, to update straight to 20d?
Is there any specific reason why I'd want to root my device before upgrading to 20d?
Thanks again,
DC
Hi guys,
Pie is laggy and buggy on my phone. Like on battery saver mode vibration continue to work, and when multitasking it's embarrassingly slow! ... The overall experience is bad. A factory reset didn't solve anything.
I want to downgrade to Oreo 22j. Can someone please guide me on how to do it?

My H930 was also laggy after the V30b OTA flashed with LG UP, even after the factory reset. Then I downgraded to 22j and flashed the V30b KDZ which became available in this time. Whole another world. Smooth as butter.

Hi Edvin73,
Sorry I didn't quite understand.
Did you receive an OTA update on your phone and it was laggy? Which method exactly worked well for you?
I flashed the KDZ available here on XDA with LGUP, and it was laggy for me.

No, I didn't receive the OTA. I flashed the leaked V30b OTA I got here on XDA. Because the experience on Pie was awful (choppy, very bad battery life) even after a factory reset, I reflashed 22j KDZ with LG UP and decided to wait for a official Pie roll out. Few days later, I found out that the official Pie upgrade is available through LG bridge. That did it. My phone is at least as smooth as on Oreo and the battery life is quite amazing but it obviously depends from personal usage. The only thing that seems different is the RAM management. Now uses more RAM with the same settings and installed apps. Regards.
PS: Completely stock, no root, no unlocked bootloader, no anything rather than complete stock.
Thank you for your answer.
Yes I also noticed that Pie uses more RAM than Oreo and the RAM management was bad and random. Maybe 4Go don't cut it anymore? I don't know.
Glad to hear that it's working perfectly for you. Unfortunately I can't update through LG Bridge, I get the "Cannot check the software version" error
It is the same for me, my battery life since I've updated my phone by OTA is awful, is it possible to downgrade without rooting my phone which I've never did?

HOW TO DOWNGRADE BACK TO OREO
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79964731&postcount=2
While it talks about how to downgrade for bootloader unlock, it's still just downgrading from Pie to Oreo. Same method, no matter the reason.
Downgrading to Oreo KDZ has nothing to do with root. It's just most people who downgrade are doing that so they can then unlock bootloader and root (on early Oreo).
But you can downgrade to most recent Oreo, whatever you wish.
Use the method in post #2, ignore the reason most people use it.

Cheers I'm gona use this :good:
No issues on my device during the first week. Only stock Gallery app is slower and more laggy than before. It's like cache is not working there so every time I open some folder in Gallery it starts loading pictures from beginning which is causing lags.
Some other issues are there with Nova launcher and multitasksing, but this is due to this launcher. On stock everything is fine.

You keep saying that in several non-relevant thread... but do you mean stock LG Pie or Linage-based custom ROM Pie? Stock firmware Pie is still being rolled out.
(I'm still on rooted Oreo firmware myself.)
If you want Lineage custom ROMs then you need to bootloader unlock and root, and flash custom ROMs. See WTF INSTRUCTIONS for that.
If you want just stock firmware Pie update, then convert to latest US998 Oreo and wait for US998 Pie. See Frankenstein instructions.
Or what I've done -- bootloader unlock, install TWRP, root, THEN update to latest Oreo US998.

The only caveat is some AS998 were actually former LS998 converted by eBay dealers, using Octopus box to carrier unlock the Sprint LS998. In at least one instance, an AS998 user could NOT successfully Frankenstein to US998 -- due to something the Octopus box "broke".

This is not really the right place to ask this question, so the thread will be moved by a mod. Q&A Section is better.
To update AS998, see Frankenstein instructions. Convert to US998, then update to latest Oreo US998.
I also already answered you in Frankenstein thread yesterday:
_____
What AS998 firmware are you on right now? Nougat, like 10d or early Oreo like 20a?

Then follow the Frankenstein instructions to convert to US998.
US998 Nougat
Master Reset
US998 Oreo. Go to 20h directly if you don't care about bootloader unlock and root. Or go to US998 20a temporarily, use WTF instructions to bootloader unlock, then go to US998 20h.
Wait for US998 Pie.
I've answered you several times. There's no alternate answers. You just have to go do it.

They are already there. I wouldn't have said I provided them if they weren't there.
9 screenshots already attached to the Frankenstein instructions post. They've been there since April 2018.
You need to go read the Instructions and look at them.

I updated my AS998 Oreo to US998 Pie
I followed Frankenstein instructions and here is how it went:
1. Flashed (PARTITION DL) NOUGAT US998 but after connecting to LGUP again it still showed AS998 and UPGRADE to Oreo US998 was not allowed.
2. Flashed (PARTITION DL) Oreo US998 and it worked.
3. Flashed (UPGRADE) Pie downloaded from here.

Post #1 of the Root Sticky gives you link to the WTF INSTRUCTIONS you need for your variant. All download links are in the WTF instructions.
Read them carefully. Even print them out. Look for your scenario: US998 on Nougat. It's a decision tree... If you have this variant on X firmware, do this. If you have that variant on Y firmware, go there.
By the time you get to Section 5, everyone has fastboot flash commands and are (temporarily) on early Oreo. Then you run the bootloader unlock code.
Section 6 is installing TWRP and root files.
Section 7 is Troubleshooting Tips.
It's VERY important to read it all ahead of time, download the files you need, and not just jump in.
Hello friends, I do not know if I have really damaged my phone. It is the h931 model converted to us998. Because of my desire to have a foot, I installed a KDZ of the European model h930. At the beginning the rom started without problems, after I noticed that it had no signal, I installed the Oreo us998 modem and it was still without a signal, so I went back to oreo us99820h and when it starts the screen it is welcome, the touch does not work for me. Any solution to this problem, I would appreciate suggestions and help. Thank you so much ♥

You screwed up.
NEVER NEVER NEVER flash stock H930* firmware over any North American variants. It says so in all the Instructions.
You ignored all warnings. WHY? Every Pie H93O* KDZ and TWRP flashable zip says "ONLY for H930, H930G, H930D, H930DS. Do NOT ask if others can flash this!"
Flash back to US998 Nougat to repair your damage. PARTITION DL, all partitions in Dev Patched LGUP.
Then use one of the 4 workarounds in post #6 of the US998 PIE KDZ thread to update to US998 Pie.
Did you not read about those? They are mentioned top of post #2. Go to Post #6 of the US998 Pie KDZ. Workaround #3 and #4 work for everyone. Two people yesterday said #4 worked for them.
Here's one:

Try temporarily flashing back to US998 Nougat via Partition DL mode, all partitions. See if that fixes touch. Then update to US998 Pie again.

I'm almost out of answers. All I can suggest is Partition DL to H933 Nougat. Temporarily. See if that works, then back to US998 Nougat, then update back to US998 Pie.
Is it possible your digitizer just happened to fail same time you were doing all this?

Exactly, I think that by flashing that KDZ h930, some file or something that handles the hardware of the screen has broken.

Hello Friend. I've been thinking and well, could you tell me that a "Dump" file,? Could you solve the problem with that or is it more risky?

Never used Dump file, so don't know. That's a function of LGUP where you can theoretically restore original partitions if you have a "dump" prior to making any changes. You've already made changes.
