Hi all,
I'm fairly senstive to PWM, but i already had few mobile phone with Oled, and i had no problem ( i had problem with TV)
But i bought the S23 ultra on friday, and since i had hard headache, specially in the morning
I installed screen oled apps, but to no avail, i play with the mobile for few minutes, then headache
Any idea ?
Maybe its the adaptive Refesh Rate, turn it off and try it out.

Is there a way to fix the refresh rate at 120hz instead of 60hz
The other option which i use now it "adaptive refresh"

Is there an easy way to check, if the S23 Ultra uses PWM with a low value like the S22 Ultra? (around 240Hz)
I was hoping so much for the new S23 Ultra to have a much better PWM value (of around 2000Hz), but unfortunately it seems, that Samsung still do it
Maybe my local electronics store will get a S23 Ultra for Demo at the end of this week, so I can test it in the store.
With the S22 Ultra I get eye pain and headaches after 2 min, so using it in the store should get good results!
As soon as I tested it, I will let you know

Either Decrease brightness to 10% or download an app called galaxy Max Hz from here in this forum
You can not do anything about it, that is the big issue about Oleds, all have PWM and all affect eyes even to normal people if you use it too much time, that is a reason why I never buy a Laptop with PWM screen.

They aren't talking about PWM. Normal people aren't bothered by it and PWM flicker on S series has been 240hz anyway.

You have no idea of this subject, the issue in all this screens is regarding the nefarious PWM, all Oleds suffers this and cause a lot of problem in people, it has nothing to do with the refresh rate and there is no solution with any app when the brightness level is done with PWM, this is a hardware stuff and if you don't tolerate it, buy another phone with IPS screen that does not use PWM, this is what I did with the Galaxy Tab S7, fortunately there is a model with IPS, Oled is not suited for watching the screen for long time.

this, use galaxy maz hz, solves almost every issue with it.
Increase room's ambient light, use manual brightness control and increase display brightness.
If that and fixed refresh rate doesn't work try using an incandescent light source or indirect sunlight.
I had a similar issue with my Samsung M62
Try disabling vivid colour mode.

I think so.
I looked at a report that the S3 actually has a lower screen brightness then the S1!
"The Galaxy S3 uses a 1280 X 720, PenTile AMOLED screen, which is higher resolution, but dimmer than the Galaxy S1 and Galaxy S2 screens, Soneira said. The culprit seems to be power management: in trying to get decent battery life with its huge 4.8-inch display, Samsung had to turn the brightness down.
Power consumption figures bear that out. Samsung cut maximum display power from 2.1 watts on the Galaxy S2 to 1.3 watts on the Galaxy S3, dropping maximum brightness from 289 candelas per square meter to 224. The lower power usage, however, lets the S3 get solid battery life even with the larger screen: running time with the display on increased from 4.4 hours on the Galaxy S2 to 5.6 hours on the S3."
Qoute from a website ^
is there anyway to actually make the screen more visable? Like brighter? Its really annoying have this great phone and My older, LG 2X P990 has a brighter screen!
Thanks guys! Jack -
While I can't help you make it brighter, it's probably worth considering that display lifetime is probably also an important trade-off made by Samsung.
Even at the existing brightness, there are already some people complaining about display "burn-in" etc.
I would predict that any further increase in brightness would greatly increase the problems of burn-in and wear-out.
(Reason being that perception of brightness isn't linear, i.e. doubling the display power wouldn't make it look anywhere near twice as bright, yet would cause a dramatic increase in pixel fatigue and reduction in life)

What is really annoying, it is the hypochondria of the users. They are buying phone, they are happy with it, but then, they have the REPORT.
It may state that S3 is slower than nokia 1100 (if dropped out from a jet plane because S3 is more flat and will glide).
It may state that S2 is fir with tiny screen compared to iSomething (to iPad, to be precise).
Not to mention that it may state that the battery is crappy compared to the Han Solo's communicator he used in Star Wars.
Jack, please take my advice:
first, sell your crappy S3.
secondly, please READ the reports, DIGG forums, and please: choose the phone which will make you happy.
last but not least: BUY only this device which you'll want, do NOT listen to your mum.
Well, outdoors, especially in bright sunlight, the GS3 screen is in deed too dim.
Maximum brightness is around 330 cd which is far less than the best LCDs offer these days. Those LCDs are bordering on 600 cd which is a massive advantage. Due to this, my next phone will one sporting a top-notch LCD. AMOLED has fallen behind the curve IMO.

OLED doesn't need 600 nits of brightness. In fact, I don't even think that OLED should be measured that way because LCD's use a backlight which means it will win any brightness test easily. Just look at this picture for example.
http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=...q55UP-BG4GsiALEw4CgBA&ved=0CDMQ9QEwBg&dur=208
It shows that AMOLED can produce the same brightness as an LCD measuring about 100 less candela.
brand new S3 t999l here, perfect indoors, unusable in sunlight or overcast. For indoors use only, if no mod or fix to make the display brighter.
Hey guys I was thinking of upgrading the the galaxy s5, but specification wise, is it the same max brightness as the S3 ??
I mean, I really have a problem in the s3 being too dim even at maximum brightness when outdoors in the sun, so is the S5 specification wise, have the same max brightness as the s3 and face this problem?
Rate this thread to express how well you can see the LG G6's display outdoors. In case you've been playing Minecraft for 18 months straight, you might not known how to get outside anymore. Well, find the door and walk through it. A higher rating indicates that it has very high maximum brightness and thus fantastic outdoor visibility in direct sunlight.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Would've loved an amoled screen.
Well that's sure to help anyone considering getting the G6.
Are you sure it's not Amoled? Did you research reviews and specs before you were forced to get your G6?
Please don't reply.
Well i have used the phone in direct sunlight and cant really say anything bad about it is readable so tha i can take calls, read texts but i wouldn't go out and start watching a video since when i say direct sunlight its like 90+°F lol but if i sit in a sunlight area with a bit of wind then yes phone is plenty bright enought for me to watch content on and enjoy it
For me it deserves 4 stars. LG G6 is more than sufficiently visible under direct sunlight.
It's pretty amazing to me that nobody other than Samsung has figured out oled for mobile screens. You know lg has been working on it for years, but for some reason they just can't mass produce it. Samsung has it mastered.
Actually LG isn't really starting to dabble in small OLED until next year.
As far as screen quality goes I saw a review stating measured 557 nits, as bright as the iPhone 7. Color accuracy was better than the iPhone and S7. Gamut was a little disappointing with 136% sRGB vs 197% for the S7. All in all a great display, probably the best LCD ever put in a phone.

im very impressed with the lg g5's display. super bright, very rich in color. and crazy sharp.
It's summer season where I'm at and yesterday I was at the beach. Visibility is low in outdoor bright light.
Probably a weird question, but how is this phone when using with polarised sunglasses?
My Z2 turns to black in some angles in portrait mode and completely black in horizontal.
Cheers
I will have pretty good comparison. HTC 10 was having highest ppi and regarded as the best lCD display. However outdoor visibility was extremely bad. I am not sure but I think it is a characteristics of LCD display . One thing I notice that even for camera HTC 10 was relying on display. Whenever I was opening camera app the screen was automatically turning 100% bright and then comeback to normal after closing the app. It happen with third party camera app as well. I will report once I get G6.

Yes it may be buggy however according to http://www.androidauthority.com/lg-g6-review-752130/
the LG G6 display actually gets brighter than 100% when it is set to AUTO.
"Putting it through our testing, we found the display to have a max manual brightness of 556 nits, which is boosted to a very respectable 663 nits when auto brightness is engaged under direct light. In sunlight, this is likely to be even higher"
I have no way to test this myself. The display is just barely usable in direct sunlight. Better than my G3 though. I wish it was better in this regard since I use this as my motorcycle GPS sometimes.

I keep our three V30 at 70% all the time, because I don't like LG "auto brightness" which is too dim. 70% is plenty bright, and I read on my phone all day long, with no eye strain.

PWM is short for Pulse Width Modulation. "Pulse-Width Modulation, or PWM, is one of the ways display makers can use to adjust the display's brightness. PWM is considered to be an easy (or cost-effective) way to control the brightness, but it has serious drawbacks, such as flicker that may cause eye strain and headaches."
I am sensitive for the flickering because of a muscle disease and not sure if I can order the LG V30. On Notebookcheck it states: "The display backlight flickers at 227 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 80 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 227 Hz is relatively low, so sensitive users will likely notice flickering and experience eyestrain at the stated brightness setting and below."
But this is the only site who mention it, so I am not sure if it's correct.
You should probably avoid Oled/Amoled screens altogether if your eyes are sensitive - they all flicker at lower brightness. Personally I've had multiple devices with Oled screens and did notice eyestrain in the first times I've used them, perhaps because I never had a monotor with PWM, but it has gone completely now.
Hey, when you're reading German reviews, I think you are from a German speaking country. In Germany, the electronics markets from Saturn and Media Markt both have V30 as usable sample devices in every store I went to. Why don't you check it out
I don't notice flickering or headache when using the device at low brightness, but I'm noticing flickering on CRT Tubes. So yeah, check yourself before you buy

These screens are not perfect! If you get one that shows issues at 80%, then return it. If you get one that shows issues at 50%, return it! 20% and down doesn't seem to be too bad for some. Personally, I didn't have very good luck getting an H933 but my first H932 was good. Actually better than my H933. Try all white or all grey backgrounds to see how bad the one you get is.

A lot of LCD panels use PWM for brightness too. It only becomes a problem when the frequency is very low (to begin with). But maybe I'll go for the HTC u11 plus than. Uses PWM also but in higher frequency.

I am not a LG Fanboy (actually I'm angry, that they didnt Roll Out the Oreo Update yet) but:
Camera, Design, Feeling, Size, Software,... everything is better in the V30!
The most negative thing on the HTC U11 plus was the absolute dark Screen brightness, even on 100%.
Also ist was very slippery and the beatiful transparent Design was only visible in a certain Viewing Angle.

Yeah, I'm aware, but I haven't heared of people complaining about that on phones. Must be at a high frequency or not used too often at all. I know a lot of monitors used to have PWN with a low frequency but I've used PWM-free ones just to avoid possible eye strain and probably that's why I did experience it for a bit after first using OLED screens.

Well, he's specifically worried about getting the V30 due to the screen...
And I disagree, I've had the U11 (not plus) for a half a year and I prefer my V30 but the U11 definitely had a better camera (much better in low-light) and imo software. It was also faster and had less stutters and framedrops. It was an amazing phone really, so can't go wrong if you're afraid that OLED will give you eye strain.
In reality V30 must have PWM @ 227Hz.
But in reality observers who tested V30 said that their eyes aren't strained from V30 display while they do strain from 1+5T for example
So, best bet for you should be to buy it with moneyback, test for yourself and get money back if your eyes would suffer
With PWM not only frequency does matter but also % of duty cycle

That's interesting because I watch a local reviewer and he says that his eyes are sensitive so he always mentions eye strain when reviewing phones. He said that the 1+5t screen was great overall but gave him eye strain, while the V30's screen didn't.
I never gave it much thought but I guess it matches your findnings.

The U11 plus uses high frequency. There people can get eye restrain below 30% health. The htc 11 doesn;t work with PWM (and has a nicer screeen than the plus).

Heard today that the lg g7 gets a M LCD display. Maybe wait for may to see what the new device will bring.
@Billy Madison, I can't watch the video (removed?).
Here it's a bit difficult to buy with moneyback.
I also suffer from headaches from PWM in displays (as well as other screen factors), and seem to be sensitive to certain phones so am also fussy.
From my v30+ testing I have found PWM that I notice, to occur at 41% and lower, so for me this makes the phone usable as I generally set it around 50-100% (or set it at 65% in the morning with auto on).
I have not tried a photodiode/oscilloscope on the display (yet), just pencil swinging, fan, and high speed shutter on camera to verify when the change occurs.
ixbt. com/mobile/lg-v30plus-review.html#n3
seems like even though frequency is low but the ampiltude is relatively little also, maybe that is the case

Awful, isn't it? My phone's ambient light sensor doesn't seem to be working well either. Like it can't make up it's mind on how much screen brightness to give off when faced with different lighting conditions...suddenly getting bright and dimming for no apparent reason and not dynamically or smoothly but abruptly - even after the latest OTA update (and numerous attempts at adjusting brightness/auto brightness and trying out 3rd party apps).
I would have thought Asus would have at least prioritized this issue over the last OTAs instead of fooling around with additional bloatware. Hope they come up with a solution soon, because I'm getting all cross-eyed. :cyclops:

Like it can't make up it's mind on how much screen brightness to give off when faced with different lighting conditions...suddenly getting bright and dimming for no apparent reason and not dynamically or smoothly but abruptly - even after the latest OTA update (and numerous attempts at adjusting brightness/auto brightness and trying out 3rd party apps).
I would have thought Asus would have at least prioritized this issue over the last OTAs instead of fooling around with additional bloatware. Hope they come up with a solution soon, because I'm getting all cross-eyed. :cyclops:

Feel for you eh!!
I personally don't use auto brightness but minimum brightness is a nightmare:silly:
I have tweaked a lot to finally get a solution.

Hi,
i wanted to buy a new phone with a budeg up to 500 euro (580usd) but if possibly more around 400€
it has to have an oled display and an atleast okayish camera.
The mate 10pro is my favorit but i heard some annoying things about the display.
1st of all that the display isnt birght engough. Sure oleds arent as bright but i heard that the mate 10 pro's display is just to dark for normal use
2nd that it changes brightness when opening apps.
3rd that auto birghtness is auto activated after locking the phone
4th thing i heard is that the Kirin overheats preatty fast and just isnt good overall (i know it lacks behind its Snapdragon counterpart but thermal throttle after a few mins shouldnt be normal)
What can you tell me to this points?
Oh and i have not choosen any phone atm so i am open for other recommendations but iPhones and S8/S9 because they failed badly at droptests.
Thank you all

1. Display is definitely bright enough, not sure where you read/heard that but it's great on sunny days.
2. I've never experienced it changing brightness when opening any apps.
3. Auto brightness turns itself on when the phone is rebooted not when the screen is locked.
4. The only intensive game I have on my phone is asphalt 9 and I can play it for well over a hour with minimal heat, it gets warmish but nothing out of the ordinary.
I'd definitely recommend this phone over any other

TheAndroid do you own the pro?
I read a lot about the phone here on xda and it seems like that the pro with the amoled changes brightness and got clouding (bright spots).
Don't know if every one got it or just a few. It's always kinda hard to tell because if everything works fine you don't open up a forum randomly and say that you don't have clouding or brightness changes.
In generell it sounds pretty good and, at least I read it here, there will be a really big update that increases performance and battery life

Like I said, I've never noticed any change in brightness in any app, also, never had a issue with clouding (bright spots), if you chose to get a Mate 10 Pro and it had such issue tho, I imagine Huawei would repair it or send you a replacement.

Sometimes it can just be quality control issues so a couple devices will suffer from it.

My Mate 10 Pro has 0 problem
Sent from my BLA-L29 using Tapatalk
Im bored atm so i scrolled a bit and copied multiple statments from other mate 10/pro (idk) users in this forum
*One little flaw to mention. I have some clouding. At moderate to low brightness level, grey color is the worst. (screen shot was taken by another phone, so in real life it isn't that bad)
The problem is less prominent at higher brightness levels.
Anyone else have the same issue?
*yes same problem on mate 10 pro FRANCE ... REGRETE ALMOST MY PURCHASE
*I've got the same green tint on lower brightness (30% and lower)
Did any of you guys exchange it and got a better screen with no green tint on grey screens?
*I got my replacement device today and it also had that clouding issue! Really pisses me off because one of my main use cases on my mobile devices is reading pocket articles in dark mode. This is where I could see the yellow clouding very clearly. The replacement also had a defective fingerprint scanner (did not work at all not even during setup).
Now I'm waiting for my third device, if that one still has clouding (even if it is slightly) then I'm going to switch to the XL2. At least it doesn't have clouding.
This is meant to be huaweis high end device, such issues are nogos for me. Even my much cheaper but beloved Moto Z Play doesn't have this issue.
To summ it all up: There are many ppl with problems like clouding, brighter on left/right side and i somewhere read that a guy got a greenish matrix over his display. But there are also alot saying that theirs works fine and when you buy a phone and everything is fine most ppl dont open up a forum to say that it is fine but when there is a problem they all do it....
This awnser is not really for you two guys but for the ppl who maybe visit this thread and want to know whats up.
I'll get to a store next days and see if they got one there if it is fine i'll buy it and if i still remember or if it is broke you'll see me agian here
I don't have any of those problem on my Mate 10 Pro BLA-A09, the only time that you will see that the brightness changes is when watching hdr videos on YouTube

No issues for me with the same variant. Had the phone for almost a year. HDR with you tube does impact it, and moving from a light to dark environment will change as it should. This phone handles auto brightness much better than my Galaxy 8 + does.

Bomber... I bought a brand new one on swappa recently and it remains as brand new. I want to root it and do advanced things, but it is not as easy as I thought. I will probably sell mine in the next day or 2. Pm me if you are interested. I live in Florida and have good ebay and swappa ratings. The phone is in mint condition with all original accessories, box, and plastic covers.
Don't have the Mate 10 Pro, have a Mate 10 and 2 Mate 9's, one Mate 9 is my spare phone and the second is my wife's main phone. No quality issue's whatsoever, no heating when using normally like for example the Note 4 (have also 2 of them for the S-pen function) which melts nearly when doing normal updates. No issue's with brightness, true they have no oled display's. What I am trying to say is that you can always find negative feedback over ANY phone and ANY brand. Some people will ***** about anything. Sure, you can have bad luck to...but I almost have the feeling you are searching for an excuse not to buy the mate 10...Good luck!

It really seems a bit like I'm searching for excuses but there are a lot last Gen flagship for around 400€. It is hard to find out what's really up who is just hating, who is just a fanboy. Watched hours of YouTube about phone x, y and z but they all say something else. BTW the comments on videos where they compare phones are hilarious
Yes, you will reach a point - have reached a point you don't know any more what to believe or think...Don't forget that you will only find negative feedback on the net. People in general don't post how happy they are with a phone, no they will post rather how dissatisfied they are.

Sometimes you just gotta take the leap, I had a Nexus 5x despite all the bootloop issues that where proven by other users and I didn't have 1 bootloop in 2 years, it's worth saying though, you won't find one device anywhere that someone hasn't complained about.

True. I'll probably buy the mate 10 pro becasue idk it just feels better to me. With the upcoming updates to emui 8.2 and android pie it should be near perfect. Sure it got problems with custom roms twrp aso. but if i want to do it i'll find a way
The only way i wont take it is when the OP6 drops to 400 too
I think the Mate 10 Pro is a brilliant phone for the money it now goes for. Sure it's not perfect, but is there any such thing? It has one of biggest batteries you can find in a phone today with fast charging, a brilliant 18:9 OLED display with no notch and very slim bezels, face unlocking, Leica cameras with a fantastic b&w sensor, night mode, stereo speakers, ip67, 128gb storage, 6gb ram, kirin970 with npu, ir blaster... All for a THIRD of the price of a Note 9. Yes the K970 is a bit slower than the Sd845, no it doesn't have a headphone jack and it doesn't have expandable memory. But I personally never use these, and K970 is still more than fast enough - I have never seen one hiccup or stutter. With the right launcher and wallpapers etc your can pretty much make EMUI look like 'stock' Android if you want. Just buy it!

Btw in case it's not obvious, I own one and I'm super picky about stuff like screens etc but there really isn't anything I can fault with it. Everything just works. The only real negative is the lack of updates - Huawei tends to push out updates every 3 or 4 months which isn't great, but better than nothing and is no worse than most of the other OEMs. If the latest updates are the most important thing to you, stick with pixels, OnePlus or Android One.

Actually the camera is not by Leica just the lense and it is one made out of plastic.... Oh and you probably ment the SD835 the kirin lacks a bit behind it but it should be okay with the gpu boost update and android pie is incomming for the mate 10
Im using mate 10 not pro. Only have problems on my screen at bottom have yellowish tint. Already send to huawei and change the lcd two times, still the same. I guess i must live with it. To be honest, this is the best phone i have ever used. Very snappy, top notch camera, proc not have overheat issue when playing heavy games unlike my sd821 before.

I meant the 845 as it is the latest available Snapdragon chip in phones like the OnePlus 6 etc. My point is that the chip although not the most powerful is still plenty fast enough for most people's needs and it comfortably handles pretty much anything you throw at it. The camera in my opinion is good - when I take a photo the results to me look very good. Am I a professional photographer? No, if I was I'd have a DSLR.
As an overall package, including price, I believe that this phone is one of the best you can get right now. Of course, this will change, and if OnePlus release the 6t with stereo speakers and a 3800-4000 mah battery, I may well get that.
