Galaxy S23 camera may have a hardware issue that Samsung hasn’t addressed yet
Many Galaxy S23/S23+ have an hardware issue on the main camera that causes permanent blurred and smudged spots, Samsung refuses to aknowledge the issue and fix it.

If there is a hardware issue, Samsung should recall all the units affected
The idea of this thread is when you go to Samsung support, you will have something in the case they say that this is not happening.
All of those links refer only to 23 and 23+. They even say that the 23Ultra isn't affected by these issues.
This not, but you can go to the first link where I have added a comparison between Samsung apps taking photos and GCAM, and in my opinion, Samsung has an issue with fusing photos in ExpertRAW.

In the S23 Ultra there is an issue with the camera, because in PRO Mode is noise reduction is heavy applied, maybe not the same issues of other models, but there is an issue with the stock camera and Expert RAW camera.
Try to open a Expert RAW raw shot as High Eficiency RAW in Photoshop and it will be heavy underexposed. Cameras in this phone has issues.

Almost 6 years separate the OnePlus 5T from the S23+ and still, the 5T gets better definition and focus, despite the fact that the 5T already has enough problems with the Camera.
But Samsung continues to say that it is a function and characteristic of the lens of the S23+ what is clearly seen in the "banana" effect is a circle of blur, perhaps not because of the sensor but because of the poor construction of the lens. I, like many others, feel cheated for having bought the S23.
Look at the photos and draw conclusions.

Agree with all that. Somehow Samsung photos look good as long as you view them only on the mobile screen. I think for most people that's fine. But we should definatelly excpect more from device with such price tag.

I agree with you, for point and shooters this camera is fine, check the new Oppo with fake bokeh, but some people like fake stuff.
I don't understand why this fever to build cameras of high mpx, I think resolutions between 20mpx to 25mpx is more than enough for everybody and the result will be only advantages from noise reduction to the file size where today the S23 DNGs are very big around 170mpx, my 30mpx mirrorless camera has raw files around 24 mpx with a quality of picture miles a way better compared to any phone..

I was at the IFA yesterday. I realised, that the Camera of the new Note is very nice and that the colours are much nicer, than on my S7, although it might have the same camera. I installed Aida 64 on many randomly chosen different devices and checked the built in Devices.
As you can see on the photos, all of them had the Sony sensor. I asked a few people from Samsung, why it is like this, and guess, what they told me.
There are only Sony Cameras there, and this is the state, as they are delivered. When your device gets a broken Camera, then you get a Sony Sensor built in, because it is cheaper for Samsung. For the show they take only Sony Sensors, because they know, that the pictures look much more better, than the ones of the Samsung Sensor. Unbeliveable to hear that from a Samsung person. Maybe he did not know, what he was talking about, you might say, but he seemed very well informed. If this is true, it is at least a very poor strategy. Telling the people different stuff and doing another.
There is also some comparison between, the S7 Edge, which I brought there with Samsung Sensor and the Note 7 with Sony Sensor.
I also asked A woman working there for Samsung, if the Samsugn sensor is better, which she said, was true. Then I showed her the two devices and she said, of course the Samsung sensor in the Note 7 would be much better. Unfotunately it was the sony sensor and the Samsung Sensor was the S7 Edge.
Sooooo Sony wins this one for me. I do not believe in Samsungs statements, that these are two equal sensors, if even they know, that the sony Sensor Pictures look better.
You can check the devices on the Ifa yourself.
Are you really comparing the display quality between the camera interfaces of the devices? If so, that is a very poor way of doing so. The only thing that matters is actual photo quality once it's been taken - and in all accounts even on various forums, the differences aren't much at all. Capturing in Auto mode just makes the comparison worse, because one could have focused on the subject, while the other could have focused on the background. As such, the cameras could have used different exposure settings.

Oh well, at least it's different. I was getting bored by the repetition of the GG5, light-leaks-from-the-side, and recall rants.
On S7 and S7 Edge both Samsung and Sony modules got used! I had a few devices and have seen both!
On Note7, ONLY Sony cam modules are used, you can check because there are no Samsung drivers present! That's also the reason why S7 users with Samsung cam and Note7 Port can't use all cam functions...
To the most important thing, the performance: there is not much difference, both sensors are almost equal (big discussions in S7e forums about that).
In my opinion Sony is a bit better in details, Samsung has better white balance in low light. Sony has quicker auto-focus in low light...
As I said, I own both, and the difference is very little!

I hate to be right sometimes but as I told long ago after years of testing it turns out that the best camera of Samsung was in S6 / S6Edge+. Test it yourself. Hold S6 in one hand and for example S8 in the other and take a photo in good light. Then zoom it on the phone and you will see that S6 has better details, no artificial brightener while for example S8 has it.
S6 has 16 Mpix and all flagships that came after had 12 Mpix rear camera.
I’ve tested S6 Edge Plus vs. S7 / S8 / S8+, Note8, S9, S9+ and…
only S9+ finally beat S6. (look how Samsung did bad for us from Sep2015 till March2018)
I wish I had NOT sale my S6 and bought a newer one
If You don't believe me? Ask XDA members who has S6 and a later Galaxy S model (but not S9+)
This is a Warning for You don't sell your S6!!!! or sell only if you can afford to buy S9+.
I did the wrong thing so I Warn you no to make the same mistake that I did
You realise and understand these devices can do a lot more than just take pictures, right? They're intended to be used for more than just a camera. All the newer devices has better features and hardware that people might need more than just what a quick photo looks like. If image quality in photos are that important, just get a proper DSLR camera and use the smartphone for all the other features it was intended to be used for.
The tiny distance between the 2 cameras when you click the picture, or the very slight change in ambient light if the pictures are consecutively to each other, is enough for the camera to choose a different ISO. This impacts perceived detail more than you might believe it does. Besides, the sensors after the S6 were larger and therefore more difficult to stabilise optically. It follows that you cannot evaluate perceived detail without professionally controlled conditions.
If a camera is very important, buy a DSLR.
Do not buy a phone just for the camera, they are only meant for the day to day snaps, which they do very well.
The purpose of this post was to warn all of ppl that DO want to use only smartfion to take pics.
I have no agenda against Note8. I just know that a lot of ppl are massivly abandoning S6 cause they think that cam will be significntly better on a newer Galaxy. Out of my good heart I want to spare them the dissapointment.
Like I said if a person wants to change S6 only for pics quality reason they should buy nothing less than S9+ otherwise they will be sadly dissapointed.

During years with my 1000 photos taken by S6EPlus from launch od S7 till launch of S9/S9+ I did it for myself cause Samsung kept on saying that that the photo quality is better in good light than previous S models. So I went to the electronics shop. I one hand I had my phone and in the other the newer Galscy version. I joined hands, pointed forward in the same linear direction and I have taken a photo with both (same options on both, for example HDR). Then I opened in both phones the gallery and I looked very intesnly with no zoom and with zoom whsat the quality was.. the S6EPlus won with all but not with S9+. But I did not have the photos from these other models troughout the years cause I was doing it for my self to check my theory that Samsung will be lying about much camera improvment.
Hence no photos. I wasnt planing then to warn everybody. I myself wanted to buy S7E and all the next phones cause I beleived that maybe the next and next model with have a batter cam. I waited 3 years, 3 generations till the emerge of S9+ that I can truely say that in good light S9+ makes better photos than my S6E+. I was planning to buy it but I didnt have enough money

Hi,
Just read an article on xda about ToF camera app which gives you night vision in pitch dark using ToF camera. You can't take photos or videos in this but is fun to use.
Update: Now you can take photos and video. You can also change colours.

ive used this on previous phones, its interesting

Working on my Exynos S20 ultra with latest firmware.
It's novel but NOT even close to night vision!
It's essentially a form of LIDAR and produces an image showing things in front of the sensor without the need for any visible light.
If your phone does not have TOF function than this app won't work. That is why it works on the S10 5G but not the S10.
If they want to make something more useful in future phones why not introduce a FLIR (brand name but acronym for Forward Looking Infrared Radiometer)? Not only does it take temperature in many points it can find overheating things in a big hurry.

FLIR = Forward Looking Infra-Red
Would be nice to have, but this ToF is still fun, although the light from the screen would probably give you away unless you could put the phone in some VR headset or something

They can be used interchangeably just as RAID originally meant Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks but more use Redundant Array of Independent Disks.
And if you're in the position where detection by unfriendlies is undesirable or dangerous you wouldn't be using a smart phone!
Although I've seen plenty of cheating in night time games of hide and seek in the woods with people using those little flir attachments on their phones!

Mostly because there is already a FLIR for smartphones, the FLIR ONE Gen 3. It's $200. Do you want that added to the price of the phone for something that's most certainly a niche use?

FLIR One is junk, I would NOT want that on any smart phone!
There is a CAT android phone that has it and it's better than the add on.
Latest update says my S20U does not have proper integration of ToF sensor in the system, some features may work incorrectly
Also pressing more wants me to watch an ad video before unlocking the options, but no video will play so I cannot open "More", I have disabled all adblockers

I wouldn't trust the review and also the reviewer. Photos are identical, just photoshoped to look different. Look at moving cars, people, they are in the exact same position. Even if you take photos at the same time, you have lag and wouldn't catch the exact same position for everything.

Exactly, there are more FAKE videos like this from different youtube users claiming to have tested different phones. Just click bait. Photos are identical, just photoshoped and somewhat cropped/rotated to change perception.
For me that comparative is incongruous. These photos aren't taked in same conditions and not even same camera, it's absurd.
Having had the phone a few days now I've had time test the camera properly. I've noticed it tends to soften images, this is particularly noticeable with pets highlighted in the fur.
Coming from the pixel 4 it's pretty disappointing that it can't compete in a lot of instances.
The first few pics I took were absolutely awful. I updated the software and this improved the camera considerably. What's the chances of the camera software improving with further updates? Anyone coming from other Samsung devices that's had the camera improve with updates?
Really love everything else about the phone and don't really wanna return it.

I've just got it now thanks, I'll have a play with it. What are the configs for?
Coming from a Pixel 4a the camera quality is VERY disappointing if you're using your cell phone camera to take pictures of anything that isn't a non-moving well-lit object. Lots of detail is lost especially when the subject is a person - facial features are smoothed out and that makes the hair look really blended together. Disabling the scene optimizer seems to help but you can't disable this in Portrait mode.
I have GCam installed but haven't had a chance to tweak the settings. It's better than the stock camera but........ coming from a $350 phone to an $800 phone and I still need to tweak camera settings???? Can't really express how disappointed I am in the camera quality and there is stock post processing is almost impossible to turn off.

Hi there. My camera is truly appalling, and significantly worse than the S10 I traded in. All photos on any setting are grainy and noisy. I can't get a good quality photo from a metre away in good light. Does anyone know if this is a software issue they are going to release a fix for? If not, I'm going to send it back I think.

My thoughts exactly, I'm sending it back this week. I was gonna go for the ultra instead but I asked the question over there and it seems while it's a step up from the regular S21 it's still very disappointing. In just gonna keep the pixel 4 till something decent comes out. Probably the next pixel now.

The camera is good for outdoor. These pictures have been shot from approximately 150 meters [hand-held]. Please see it as a guide for you.
How's the audio zoom working in videos? Does the audio actually zoom in that direction or does it just get louder?
Agree the camera/app is disappointing. Hopefully they get it improved soon
