As I would like to connect my serial GPS receiver to the XDA in the car I'm trying to source an All in one cable that would provide me with both serial and power connections for the XDA.
I would prefer somthing that has the cigar lighter style plug with associated voltage regulator built in, although if that is not available I could build the regulator myself.

I am just about to embark on this project myself. I have a Garmin GPS III and already have their car power/PC Serial cable.
I got the pinouts for the GPS unit from the Garmin site, and it looks like only TXD, RXD and GND are required. This should make it fairly easy to connect up to the xda, following the pinouts on this site. I'm off to Maplin today to try and get a male 9pin serial and an xda connector, following which I shall get the soldering iron out. The tricky bit will be getting the power from the Garmin cable as well. I'll let you know how I get on.
Failing that, you could try MobilePlanet, a US site that seem to specialise in GPS connectors. However, they make a cable that only supplies power to the PDA, and the GPS has to run on batteries. Does anyone know where I can buy the plug that plugs into the bottom connector for an XDAIIs?
I've asked everyone I can think of, searched Google, Maplin(UK) and Expansys and I can't find one.
It's probably because I don't know the correct name for it!

but read that the plug of BlueAngel is not exactly the same.
I purchased an XDA II car charger from the O2 shop in Manchester - it came with a plug that works fine with my XDA2s - have used it on the car charger and on the supplied power lead - charges fine.
When I got my IIs, it CAME with the plug already, any standard car charger can plug right into that plug and then the IIs... You sure you guys didn't get it?????

I'm trying to get hold of a connector with 22 connections because I have one problem left.
To switch the car kit on, I either need a 5V feed from the device OR need to be able to put 5V in on one pin and get 5V out of another.
If anyone can help with either the connector or letting me know which pins I might be able to use send me a mail please

I was planning on getting the new 3-1 Adaptor for the TYTN to make use of the 3.5mm jack and charging feature in my car.
The thing is, the cable for this adaptor is very short and cannot be hidden easily when in the car. So, I was thinking of using an extension cable of some sort, so the adaptor could be more easily hidden elsewhere under the centre console.

Affraid i didn't find anything either, and wanted to do the same thing.
I resorted to buying the cable from expansis and "Adapting it my self"
The project was fairly simple, and if your happy with a soldering iron and a multimeter you should be fine.
I now have a small connector on my dash that will disapears under the dashboard to a breakout box. All i basicly did was chop off the box that has the two female connectors in it, extend the wire with an old cut up parralel printer cable (multicore and was lying arround) and then terminated in a project box from maplins.
This has two headphone sockets, (audio out stero, and mic in) as well as a USB socket to charge the phone. (the plan was to have the USB socket be usable for data... but that bit went a bit wrong...
Still from the testing i have done, i now have tomtom and WindowsMedia mp3 play back comming through my car stero, and my VarioII reports to be charging. Havn't had a chance to test it on a long drive yet, i think i might still need a beefier 12Volt to USB adapter.
If anyone want more info on what i did, i'd be glad to help.

Any news on that extension cable yet; is it available?
i brought one of these and successfully lengthened it with an old peice of printer cable (only multi core cable i had to hand)
i then used an off the shelf diy project box to hide the junction in.
worked very well, but i have since changed to a bluetooth car kit.
the soldering was a little small and working out which wire was which was a bit of a pain, but all in all only took an hour or so to sort out. probably worth it.
(AFAIK my dad is still using the one i adapted.)

I was wondering, if it's possible to get a GNS Trafficbox FM9 connected to the HD2 (via adapter) to receive TMC-Data.
HyperGPS isn't working so far, so this could be the proper alternative...
Anybody's got some experience concerning this?
I've just bought a GNS Trafficbox FM9 which has come with a mini-B USB plug to use with my HD2. I've also bought a micro-b USB extension lead.
Taking the Trafficbox apart reveals a simple circuit board with the output wires coded in what appears to be standard USB colours. My thinking is that if I cut the USB A plug off the extension lead I should be able to solder them to the board and (hoepfully) away I go, avoidning all the traffic.
The extension lead should be here in a couple of days - I'll let you know how I get on.
Seems to be a perfect fit for the ASUS 40 pin connector.
Now we have to decide WHAT to make. I was thinking about a few items, but your suggestions needed.

Great idea. I like it a lot.
I ordered a couple of these ACT4060 items:
ACT4060A SOP-8 ACT4060 Wide Input 2A Step Down
The idea is to take 15V from the tablet or charger and step down to 5V to power a USB hub, similar the the ASUS USB host device (same part).
I also thought to add a 5.5mm female barrel socket for charging with a 15V power supply, like these: Power Supply DC 15V
Note: Many other power supply are available from 12V-15V with 5.5mm barrel plug.

I do not think the HDMI output is on the 40 pin cable, but I could be wrong. There is audio available, because it is on the TF101 Desktop Stand.

But we can try to combine a standard usb infrared adapter with the 40-pin connector. Maybe it doesn't work because of the lack of drivers (if they couldn't get extracted from the sony tablet). But i have to say that i'm neither a electronic technician nor a programmer. Only wanted to suggest my wishes ;-)

This would be a great idea - this sort of feature makes the Sony offering stand out in an otherwise fairly homogenous tablet market. Don't know anything about how to do this though, but will post back if I manage to find out anything useful...

Ok, i assume 2 or 3 pins on the 40-pin connector are for audio signals because the dock has an audio out! we could connect some irda leds to the pins like shown in this project:

how about a mini usb cord? So I could plug my DSLR camera into it and download the pictures on the fly?..or even a micro to plug the phone in...but if it was a USB hub, it would work as well..just a longer cord.

Quick look on Google shows up this serial IR transceiver made by IguanaWorks. I'm afraid my electronics knowledge is very limited, but could the serial connector be replaced by these Asus-compatible adapters. I suspect the main problem might be the way the transceiver draws charge from the serial port to charge up the capacitor? According to the website, it uses LIRC so either the Irdroid or Androlirc apps might work (Androlirc requires an audio-IR device, so may need some tweaking, but is apparently open-source).
The other option might be the Newkinetix Re - whether it would be possible to replace the iThing connector with the ones you have located. Of course, the app is only for iOS, so yet another stumbling block.
I'm only feeding back the results of my digging, lack any of the required skills to make any of this work, so forgive if it all misses the mark completely.

I thought this thread would be more popular. If the plug didn't cost so much to ship to my country I'd be building a wall charger with a long lead and a car charger.

That's a nice find! Now if only we knew some technical details about the connector pin-out.. I guess a good start would be looking at what both docks have inside and the connector routings, I doubt they use any external electronics, so should be quite easy to do cool things.
EDIT: at least now we'll be able to do another cable.. buy a standard USB 3.0, cut one end out and solder the new connector. A bit of cleaning everything up and ready to go.

I finally got my USB Host Kit for the TF, so I can work on the connector pin out. The USB Kit did not work (for me) on the dock 40 pin socket, so apparently there are differences between the Dock and Tablet 40 pin sockets.
Can anyone can confirm the USB Kit does/does not work on the dock 40 pin socket?

Seems many people like infra-red controls. Here is some pics of the I-Got-Control device for the iPod/iPad/iPhone.
There seems to be only a few lines connected to the Apple 30 pin connector. Does anyone have the pin-out for Apple 30 pin connectors?
I think this might be easily attached to the Asus USB Host or SD adapter.

If I were to solder every connector point through a wire, would connecting the dock from the side through the 40 pin connector to the bottom slot of the TF give the same communication as if the TF is docked? Been wanting to "dock" the tablet without actually having them together.
Yeah, it would work, but instead of soldering better find connectors and a cable. I'm thinking of doing it to my USB adaptor (which is very badly done, completely loose).

Ok this may sound strange but does anybody out there know where i might find or have one made, I'm looking for a cable with 2 40 pin connectors on both ends, 1 male and the other female. This is for my TF201 and dock, I would use it so I don't have to take off the case to the Prime just plug in to the prime and to the dock..

Just in case anyone was curious, I thought I would try to get lucky and see if a female-female USB adapter with a standard ASUS 40-pin cable on either end would work. However, it was only a novel attempt and the tablet does not recognize the dock as I had hoped.
I am sure Cables-to-Go could get something to work, but I agree that it will be quite expensive. It would be nice if there was a jumper cable accessory to accomplish this same concept since I am in the same position as the OP and typically carry the tablet in its own case and only use the dock when I have alot of typing to do.
On a side note, I did confirm that my Logitech Anywhere Mouse with the Unifying Receiver does work 100% with my tablet and Dock!....I just may be able to leave the laptop at the office yet!
Does anyone have a mapping of the pins and wires? I would like to try and "splice" two cables together to try and make a jumper cable but would need to make sure that I make the right connections. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I don't think that's going to work for several reasons.
First and foremost, if use two TP USB cables as the souce of the parts, you'll end up with a "jumper" cable with male connectors at both ends. You need male to female, remember?
Secondarily (and almost as important) is the number of contacts on the USB end of the cable. USB has four conductors plus shield and nine conductors plus shield in USB 3. Taking a cursory glance at USB plug on my TP cable, that's all there is. I don't see any additional conductors.
Following this, it's EXCEEDINGLY unlikely that the cable has 40 wires (one for each pin on the Prime end) running the full length. If it did, where would they connect to on the USB plug? Kinda silly to include extra copper to go nowhere.
Instead, if you were to pry open the 40 pin male plug, you'll see that most the pins aren't connected to anything. They're not needed for the USB cable.
Sorry to say, this just isn't going to work.
If you do choose to clip one of your cables just to have a look-see, cut the cable somewhere in the middle. If you cut right up next to the USB plug, you won't have ample wire there to repair what you're about to break.
I am aware that you will need a female adapter to make a true "jumper" cable. However, there may be a way of jerry-rigging a connection to the dock if a female connector can't be found (I have yet to find a part online).
My question is more in regards to whether or not anyone had a schematic of which of the pins are connected to which of the respective USB pins so that I could determine the best way of making a connection....short of having a cable for the ASUS TF201 like this: iPhone Extension Cable
