You didn't search enough
If your Athena is already unlocked and with SPL 1.2, just flash AP4 because it contains the SPL3.5 upgrader and there is not stand alone SPL3.5 upgrader yet ( read cmonex posts) and from there you can flash any other SPL 3.5 rom, or keep AP4 as its excellent anyway.
If the athena has the stock SPL just unlock it with Olinex unlocker firs, search how to do this properly to avoid problems and yes the unlocker AP4 and instructions how to do and procedures to follow shall you got into problems are easy to find.

Is it possible to replace 2.10 Olipro with 2.30 Olipro Hard SPL and what is difference between two versions? What is benefits on v2.30?
I believe the main reason 2.30 came about was because Olipro was trying to come up with a developers SPL to make it more compatible with MTTY. 2.30 was a test phase and wasn't what he wanted, 2.60 came out and 2.30 wasn't actually "officially" released... You can get Hard SPL ver7 (2.10) and Ver 9 (2.60) but I haven't found 2.30 on these forums. 2.60 is for developers who are creating roms/apps for the Hermes and isn't needed by the layperson who just wants to flash roms with some security.
My advice stay with 2.10. It seems stable and good, got me out of a few fixes too... Unless you want to be a developer you don't need 2.60 as there were issues with it too... I've also noticed a few people with 2.30 saying that their Hermes keeps exiting into bootloader and they have had trouble fixing.

What does hard spl do?
If you are going to upgrade to AT&T 8525 WM 6 official ROM then no need to do a HARDSPL but if you are going to used WM 6 Cooked ROM then it is a MUST to do a HARDSPL.
AFAIK
HardSPL will allow you to flash your unit with a unofficial release ROM or Cooked ROM, or even the other brand official ROM as long as it is for Hermes.

Installing HardSPL, no luck keep getting Error 260, it loses connection with the device for no reason, I'm wondering why there isn't a straight forward Hard-SPL readme, that says how to install it, the instructions are all over the place...

I won an auction for a T-Mobile Ameo and started to do my homework, while the phone doesn't arrive.
I already own a BlueAngel and two Universal, so it should not be that new to me. However, I do have a few questions:
SPL: as I understand it, this is like a second stage boot loader. There is the V1.2 by Oli, which is like patched to allow any firmware to be installed, as oposed to the original one, which only allows to flash signed firmware matching the country ID. Is this more or less correct?
SPL 3.5: there is a new second stage boot loader, which is required for WM6.1 like the AP4.0. Correct?
Downgrade back to SPL 1.2: this is now possible again?
Last question: there seems to be official 6.1 firmware versions from T-Mobile.
Can I just upgrade the WM5 untouched Ameo to the official WM6.1?
What if I have the german WM5 and want to use T-Mobile's WWE 6.1 instead of the german one?
Is there any stupid combination of firmware and SPL that will lead to a brick or a dead end?

SPL 3.5 is for ROMs adapted from X7510 (but not for X7510)

I think ROM for SPL3.5 in SPL1.x and for SPL1.x in SPL 3.5

So here is the sum up for all Newbies like myself:

The Hitchiker's Guide to understanding SPL on Athena

1) SPL = second stage bootloader
2) Athena 7500 is originally shipped with SPL 1.2
3) Athena 7510 is originally shipped with SPL 3.5
4) for different firmware to be loaded, one need a hacked SPL, that allows flashing unsigned firmware
5) There is a modified SPL 3.5 for the Athena 7500 that allows WM6.x firmware, ported from the Athena 7510 to run on the 7500
6) SPL 1.2 and 3.5 are incompatible, regarding firmware, due to the different amount of memory reserved for the ROM. A SPL 1.2 firmware won't run on SPL 3.5 and the other way around, neither. Trying to do so, will make the black screen or reset loop happen.
7) to get SPL 1.2 Olipro (the hacked one), you need to do the UNLOCKER procedure (search sticky)
8) to get SPL 3.5 Olipro, you need to install AP 4.0 (it's a WM6.1 firmware, that installs the SPL 3.5 Olipro as well)
9) to be able to install SPL 1.2 compatible firmware again, you need to follow the DOWNGRADER procedure (search sticky)
10) if you want to have, for warranty issues, the original SPL 1.2 back, you need to install an official dump. I am not 100% sure about this one...

No, X7500 original is SPL 1.1
Is there a way to go back from i.e. SPL 1.2olipro to official SPL?

Hi everyone. I'm a newbie of cooked rom scene. I want to flash my athena with ap4. I've understand that to run a proper installation i've to check the correct version of radio. But my question is do i've to unlock the athena first with athena unlocker? Or is it enough follow every steps of this guide:

Hi kingmob,
Yes you can flash AP4 to get spl 3.5 , but I would suggest you experiment first flashing the spl 1.2 roms to get some experience as sometimes the ap4 upgrade goes a bit awry.
