Help with upgrading. - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

FIrst off, I've got a at&t 8525 with wm5, and I'm a complete noob to the device and upgrading. I'm pretty good with computers and technology but upgrading this has somewhat got my head spinning. lol. I wish to upgrade to Schap's Wm6 pro v4.31.
The way i understand to upgrade is: upgrade to hardSPL (using the ruu provided with the hardspl download), then run the ruu provided with schap's rom and upgrade.
A few questions: 1) Do I need to upgrade the radio rom? 2) Schap's rom, being a non-at&t authenticated rom do i need to SIM unlock and/or CID unlock the device before upgrading? 3) After finishing upgrade do i need to downgrade to a different spl?
Many Thanks,
Tyler

When you upgrade the SPL, make sure its Hard SPL V7. SPL will be 2.10 oli after you finish (go to bootloader to check).
Once you have Hard SP you can upgrade the ROM using the sd card method.
1. Format sd card FAT32. Copy .nbh file of the om you want on to it. Rename to hermimg.nbh
2 Insert into Hermes and go to bootloader.
3. If the ALL steps have been followed exactly then follow the prompts.
Means the nasty little things like usb disconnections, sync errors or accidental PC resets won't brick your Hermes.
Just make sure the battery is charged and you don't soft reset in the middle of a flash.
No need to sim-unlock as Hard SPl should fix that problem. As long as you use a sim from the sim locked supplier then you don't need to unlock, if you intend use a sim from another carrier then you may need to unlock, best idea would be to see by using a different carrier sim.
If you do use the sim/cid unlocker tool, make sure to re-install Hard SPL V7 as it downgrades the SPL to 1.40 oli. Older, not so safe version of Hard sPL.
Radio ROMs are the riskiest things on the Hermes to flash. If everything is working fine, DON'T CHANGE IT... Not unless you are 110% certain there are advantages. A problem flashing the radio ROM is generally a permanent brick.
However, on those times where you decide to chance it, stock roms and such I strongly recommend using the sd card method. Its safer than the PC method.
Hope thats not too frightening, just want you to be aware of the dangers. As long as you prepare, be methodical and don't rush you should be fine....
Cheers...

nooB question

I'm new here and sorry for the nooB-ish question, but I'm going to be picking up an 8525 in the next week or so, and have been reading the wiki, and many posts like a madman...
I'm intending to flash a WM06 to it when I get it (LVSW's Pro 06 most likely) and I just want to be sure I understand the procedure. I have been reading the wiki (for the past couple days) and finally have read myself into a corner, so thought I'd ask.
It is likely I'm going to get the phone from ebay or something, so I'm not too concerned about the carrier's warranty. Besides, any time I tried to warranty a phone through Cingular in the past has been a headache.
That said, the steps I think I need to take are as follows:
1) us pof's v3 SIM and CID unlocker. I plan on unlocking both SIM and CID. Currently I am on Cingular, but I'd like to do this step in case I'm not on Cingular, or end up travelling and go with a pay as you go type of plan while abroad. And the CID, well I know I'll be going to a non Cingular branded ROM.
2) (not sure about this part)- load hard SPL onto the phone... but if I'm CID unlocking it, do I still need to do this?
3) run the RUU and upgrade to the LVSW (WM6 Style) Custom ROM, with the 1.34 radio, 1.10Oli SPL, and HTC Boot 0108
4) do it again, but with the LVSW (Pro Style) 15/3/07, which will give me the OS only, in the Pro Style look I'm after
5) flash it to the newer 1.38 radio sans GPS
Two or three days ago, I wouldn't have even half understood what I just wrote. I'm hoping I got it... where I am having issues is with the myriad different "use this method to flash your phone and not brick it" things in the wiki. I'm not by any means new to phone flashing, but with like 8-9 phones in the last couple years, all of which I modded in some way or another, this is my first foray outside Motorola.
So, did I get it? Or am I well on the way to owning a neat doorstop?
Thanks for any constructive input you all might have.
Sounds fine to me. But, you don't need the SuperCID to flash non-cingular as long as you're using the custom RUU's and SSPL.
Definately flash hard-spl, (although, that is the same as 1.10.Oli), I'd still probably flash it before anything else just to make sure.
Also, I'd probably check out Oli's "Mount ExtRom without SuperCID" thread if you still want access to the extrom.. Basically, if you use this and skip pof's unlocker, you'll still have Cingular CID, but, all the benefits of SuperCID.
Only use pof's unlocker if you want the sim unlock.. WHICH Cingular will give to you by calling customer service and requesting it after telling them you are traveling to Europe, etc..
Up to you though...
If you're going to use pof's unlock etc and Hard SPL why flash the custom rom before the pro style one. Can't you just go straight to the second rom?
@LegolasTheElf- thanks! I'll look into those options.
@randomelements- yep, I could. I didn't realize that the Oli SPL was pushing Hard SPL to the phone... And, with upgrading the radio, I guess it really doesn't matter.... I was going to go with that LVSW custom rom for the upgraded radio... it made it on the list of things to do on Sat. Then, Sunday I was reading the 1.38 (Hermes) radio upgrade thread, and decided to throw that on the list too.
I'm going to change my mind.. Here's the process:
1. Pof's unlocker (if you want)
2. Install Oli's Hard-SPL
3. Install 1.38.00.10 radio
4. Install OS *only* LVSW pro
5. Install Oli's Mount ExtRom without supercid if you didn't already unlock with pof's unlocker.
That will mean only one radio flash (radio being the leading cause of bricks), a good chance of fixing it (Oli's BL), and the OS you want. ExtRom is ignored as the WM6 roms don't use it anyways...
I concur.

Hey, great, thanks!
For some reason I didn't pick up on the Radio flash being the cause of the bricks... I just thought it was with the RUU and CID interferance.

That's only half the cause. The other half is boneheads and ****wits (to use a coined term on here.. Thanks Oli!) that can't/don't read before they charge forward and install crap without any idea of what the hell they're doing.
[email protected] ****wits, I'll have to use that one.
Thanks again.

Vario 2 won't flash after Unlocker3a

Hey there,
got a "new" device by T-Mob and wanted to unlock it again. So I did, and unlocking worked so far. Now I want to flash the original shipped Rom by T-Mob Germany, but this doesn't work. Device changes to bootloader and than the computer tells me to check the cable. Tried to flash the rom with changing to bootloader and than start flashing, too, but same error. I tried to flash the unlocker-radio-rom again and that works.
Now I need a solution to flash original T-Mob shipped (WM5).
Any ideas?
Update: Flashing with Custom RUU and the nbh-file from original Rom works. But still no 'normal' flashing possible.
Is it possible to set back SPL 1.04 instead of 1.40.Olipro (by the way nice work Olipro, but not for warranty-reasons )
No idea anybody?
This issue has been documented to DEAT, the reason a standard RUU program doesnt work correctly is because there is a modified (and FAR SUPERIOR) bootloader on the device and the RUU doesnt understand what it is.
CustomRUU can detect it because olipro has built the support for the different SPL versions into it.
It is highly recommended that you update to HardSPLv7 (SPL version 2.10.olipro) as this protects your device against a load of possible ways to really damage your device.
By following the guides i have compiled on "how to safely flash WM5" and the various downgrade/upgrade guides on my site you might see how much better CustomRUU and nbh editting is.....also i recommend you read the wiki before going any further.
Thank you so much! Will try it tomorrow! I know, that the newer SPL-stuff is better, but I'm not so much into it, because I just run the WM5-Rom and wanted a SIM-Unlock. Because of warranty reasons (on 2nd device) I want to get back to the original SW SPL and so on. But I really think of installing WM6 when my device is completely back alive Thank you

too much information gets confusing

hi all,
i've just bought a t-mobile vario 2
i;ve read the wiki & a few of the posts regarding upgrading
but to be honest it has so much information & sometimes the information is contradictory.. so it gets confusing
i've been using the uni for a year now
my point is
i want 2 upgrade my hermes 2 wm6
my boot screen says
herm300
IPL-1.01
SPL 1.40.Olipro
i can use a different/other sim card than t-mobile
how do i chek if my hermes is CID unlocked
and what radio i'm using & what's my bootloader number??
i try 2 read the splash screen after soft reset but the radio version goes away pretty fast
do i run POF's unlocker v3a? is it safe to run again, even if my phone is cid unlocked?
in order 2 upgrade 2 wm6
do i need to install olipros hard spl 2.10? and then run customruu?
this is what i mean by confusing?
i've upgraded my magician, uni & wizard
however they all had pretty easy/self explanatory directions?
i'm sorry for sounding like a noob, but its new territory....
thanx in advance
Is there a specific reason you want to CID the device? T-Mobile's data plan s pretty great so I have never seen the need to use another sim in my vario. You dont need to CID unlock to upgrade the rom.
As long as you have installed Olipro's spl to protect against bricking your phone it should be fairly safe to install a wm6 rom. If not, definitely install the current version of hard spl.
Once you have installed SPL, you then run the RUU.exe file that usually comes with the rom. Tha majority will have a tick box on the first page that says auto detect, which will check which version of spl you have installed and then run itself accordingly. It is best to have the current hardspl installed though.
Most of them dont touch your extended rom and only replace the OS rom contents. T-Mob's wm5 extended rom customizations wont work with wm6 anyway so you will need to go looking here for a cab file called (I Believe) tmobileukfixed.cab.
You will also need to look for newer versions of your pocket pc software as some older ones dont play nice with WM6.
Good luck, and if in doubt, read MrVanx's upgrade guide here: http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/

FUNDAMENTAL requirement before trying a WM6 upgrade

I have been reading all across the forums how to CID unlock, upgrade etc. However, I am not able to find the ways to do seeminly essential homework before trying to upgrade. These for me are:-
* Finding a way to completely backup all the stuff from original tytn. Like ROM, SPL, IPL, Radio, CIDlock etc. I feel that this is important as if ever I feel like going to the tried old one I should be able to and to preserve the warranty also. Also, the method to roll back if needed. This should be covering re CID locking the phone etc.
It makes sense to create a way to bring the phone to its completlely original shape if we need it
Thanks
Alber

You do not need to back up your spl, ipl, etc. because if you need to roll back you can just reflash them on, and they can be found around here and in the wiki.
You cannot un-CIDunlock, but if you use hardspl v7 it will "trick" your phone into thinking it is (when in reality it isnt) so that you do not have to actually unlock it. If you ever need to send it in you can just flash the old spl over it.

So you mean that hardspl doesnt CID unlock it? But isnt there really a way to extract the original components and then put them back again ?
thanks

HardSPL does not CID unlock. pof's Free Unlocker (a sticky thread) does the SIM and CID unlocking. HardSPL is a new set of bootloaders allowing upgrade utilities to access and read/write to the phone. The most important aspect of this (besides bypassing the CID check) is the security - it has some overwrite protection built in to prevent you from accidentally corrupting the bootloader area, rendering your phone a brick. HardSPL is a safety measure.
If you check THE WIKI here on xda for the Hermes, you will find some stuff on extracting. It is most probable that it will be FAR easier to find new versions of everything you have, rather than trying to back up and restore. The wiki contains MANY shipped ROMs to allow you to restore back to basically the original condition. LOOK HERE for MW5 shipped ROMs and LOOK HERE for WM6 shipped ROMs.

what about the radio upgrade
the htc108 thing
its confusing
on pof's sticky it says to downgrade the radio if u have the htc 108..
but on the radio upgrade sticky, it says u can upgrade any phone[hermes] using custom ruu..

Thanks a lot for the reply, I appreciate the time you spent in expaining this to me and providing these links.
I was wondering if HARDSPL is like shelltool where it will only allow upgrade or flashing of OS part. So, once I use the HARDSPL and flash say HTC official WM6 release or Dopod WM6, will I be ableto to get the bundled radio and SPL and IPL upgrades from these ROMS? and if yes then will HARDSPL get replaced by these SPLs and IPLs built into the ROMS? One more thing, will an upgrade like that can brick the phone as if I rum the official ROM it will try to upgrade the SPL and IPL (I am not sure).
What is the preferred way of upgrading ? unlocking CID by the tool or HARDSPL ?
I have read somewhere that lockwiz tool used for Wizard can save CID also and some tool and put it back also but I dont know how and if the same tool can do it for hermes?

Alber

Most cooked roms are os only, but a few have a radio, etc. included. If its os only, flashing will only change the os. You can separately flash radio.
Hardspl is the best because its reversible. Well thats not the best word to describe it....id say because its not permanent. But u know what i mean

Mcorrie1121 is right. I will add a couple of things.
1. HardSPL is not *necessary* for flashing anything, it only makes it safer and allows you to flash ROMs with CIDs that do not match your device without CID unlocking. Your ROM is basically a few parts - OS, Radio, IPL, SPL, ExtROM, MainSplash and SubSplash. The HardSPL will replace the SPL only. Most non-carrier ROM releases are OS only. Most carrier ROMs (as you pointed out) have ALL of these things. As Mcorrie1121 pointed out, you can easily find a radio - check the wiki, search, etc.
2. Once you have upgraded to a cooked ROM (and HardSPL), you will still be able to upgrade to a Shipped Official ROM. You may need to "unpack" it and use the CustomRUU instead of the shipped updater. That is OK though.
3. HardSPL will not allow overwriting of the IPL/SPL except by another HardSPL (see mrvanx.org downgrade guides). You will not have a problem. It will keep your bootloader zone safe.
4. I don't think there is a preferred way. Some people unlock CID, others do not. There is no reason to *not* unlock it, unless you plan to send it back - and I have never heard of someone getting service rejected for this reason. Wring ROM, yes. CID unlocked, no. That said, maybe try without CID unlocking first and then if you find you need to do it for some reason, then do it. You really do not have to do it, since the Custom Updater bypasses the CID check anyway.
5. Regarding the 0108 Radio BL issue, don't worry much about that - it is an old problem. Just don't go below whatever version you have now.

Dear, please help me with one thing-I am terribly confused about the procedure to upgrade my JASJAM to WM6. I understand that one way is to CIS unlock it and install on it the official and dopod releases of WM6. I wanted to know how can I do the same using the HARDspl. I know that I can install the HARDSPL but after that what ??? Can I then run the offcial RUU from HTC or Dopod or I am supposed to do it some other way as I am afraid that it may contain the SPL and IPL and can break by phone OR I have to use some customRUU (I dont know) OR I am supposed to extract the OS from these official releases (I dont know how) OR ..
Can you please clear these confusion??
I have:-
* I-Mate JASJAM, CID locked i suppose as when I run official HTC or dopod it says this update utility is not for this
*I really wanted to save my devices complete state and a way to revert it to the way it was like SPL, IPL, OS, Radio, CID lock etc.
PLS pls help

There are upgrade guides there and guides to put it back the way it was (OS, Radio, IPL, SPL, MainSplash and SubSplash) - it is all covered.
The upgrade guides will get you through the upgrade process. The only thing you need to do after that to use an official upgrade is to unrar (using winrar or something) the executable file and take the nbh and us it with the CustomRUU, which can be found HERE .

Got a few Questions

Ok, so just to tell you, I've searched and searched, but I do not get answers. This is my last resource.
K, I just got a Kaiser from atnt and I am going to use my old Cingular 8525 just for fun.
It still runs WM 5 so I want to upgrade it. It has a 2gig storage card and lots of apps on both mems.
So I got a few questions.
1) I've heard you can install other phone company's SIM cards, but you need to unlock the SIM first. Should I use a SIM unlocker? What does it do? Will it brick my phone? And what is a CID unlocker?
2) What is SPL? Hard SPL?
3) What is Radio?
4) What is the protocol version?
I want to upgrade to WM6, but are there any good roms?
5) How do I put all my other programs on to my phone after it is upgraded?
6) Id just like to know how to upgrade my Cingular 8525 to the best software there is.
EDIT:
So I read the Wiki and now, I just wanna flash to WM6.1 TOUCH Build20924 V27 from Dvha79_ddt
So what should I do?
Please tell if this is right.
Back up my SD card.

1. yes, no, allows other carrier roms to be installed.
2. See cid unlocker. Install Hard SPL v7 after unlocking your sim.
3. Allows you to make and recive phone calls/mms/sms.
4. Do a search. Yes a heap, look in WM06 section, also wm6.1.
5. Install cabs.
6. Read this...

All this was found with a simple search. I used the words Hermes upgrade instructions. Would be a good idea to learn how to use this to stop being flamed by people getting bombarded by these questions...
I still don't understand what Hard Spl does...
Gives you a chance to recover your phone if something goes wrong with the flash...
There is no 100% guarantee but at least you won't be on the forums crying for help because your Hermes is bricked and you can't fix it saying you haven't got Hard SPL installed...
