Battery discharge after lightning strike??? - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Today we had a strange phenomenon...
After a lightning stroke near to our Office (less than 20m distance -> into a tree), the batteries of our smartphones were "completely" discharged (HTC HD2->13%, HTC Desire -> 11%, Iphone 3GS: 20%)... we all had something about 70-80percent battery status before....
Would be interesting for me, if somebody had a equal experience (somewher els another time...)....

Yes, it is related...
As far as I know the EMF produced by a near thunder (in your case it was 20 m) will cause batteries to discharge and it is a health hazard too.
I might be wrong too, please check those links,

TP2 battery

Anyone know where I can buy a extra battery for the TP2? I have found a couple in the UK but would rather find a seller in the US.
Part# - BA S390
Is the part# listed above the correct battery for the TP2?
Mine actually says "RHOD160" on the back of it...
I found a 1500mah battery on ebay (item# 250445669999) with a "buy it now" for $8.95.
Anyone have any experience with this "replacement" battery. If so, how does it compare with the original battery which is 1500mah also?
****Update****
I also found this 1500mah battery on ebay (item # 270409538954) with a "buy it now" for $21.99

I stick with genuine batteries now as I had a bad experience with after market batteries. My TyTN2 has issues turning on, and randomly turns off - even after I put the genuine battery back in. It seems the after market battery did some permanent damage.
I recently received some 1500mah batteries for the TP2. I purchased 3 units. I have a friend that will test these batteries before I use it. I will use one for the office, home and the other one will be opened and my friend will inspect the board and cell of battery. He usually takes about a week to do these test so, I will give you a update next week, if possible.
I dont really have a problem with the battery life of the TP2. Its just in case I forget to charge it over the weekend, due to my drunken stupor. Its nice to have a backup battery at home or work.
maybe I'm the only one with short life battery problem on rhodium... but I have to complain... after 3 times I've charged ...the battery dies in the evening.
maybe I must be patience and maybe it will improve after some charging cicle...but for now I'm disappointed.
anybody've seen a better battery on market for TP2?
well... i been an iphone user for a long time..
well since the first gen came out...
i still own an iphone First Gen (2g)
and now i been with the TOuch Pro 2
for about 3 weeks..
i love the TP2...
i did a test.. a little one tho..
i live in NEw YOrk.. in the bronx
i had to go to the JFK airport
in train so it was arround 1 hour and 20 minutes
maybe the trip...
i charged both phones to 100percent...
i was listening to music the WHOLE TRIP with the Iphone
and the TP2 was Idle...
when i got there... my iphone still was 100...
the TP2 was about 91%....
another stuff that i know it drains a little my battery from the TP2
is beejive but i cant live without it, i been trying a lot of methods to
increase my battery, cant see it perform better..
TP2 fully charge in the morning and it dies before 7pm..
just Textin, and some phone calls ( about 3-5 calls )
no website .. if so maybe 1 website .. no emails no push anything...
no bluetooh no wifi...
i ordered an extra battery and a craddle i hope this helps me.
something i figured was that the charging is REALLY FASTTTT....
it can go out 20% in about 15-25minutes of charging
( wall plug ) ... dont try to charge from USB it will take u 200 hours LOL
when i first got it i always charged from usb and used to take me like 8 hours
even more to fully charge it.. but when i tried from the wall plug..is Amazing
how fast it charges..

i was a big fan of APPLE.. now i really LOVE

my iphone battery was still 100%...

Peace dude.
Not saying that your statement is false or deceiving, just that your iphone battery meter was lying to you.
Clearly the battery level can't be at 100% after 1 hr 20 min of use. The meter must only drop when the battery gets to a certain level. Kinda like when you fill your gas tank and the needle stays on full for the next 50Km.
You must have the 1% increment tweak installed. Notice how a couple of minutes after taking it off charge it drops to 99%. At least this is realistic aye enjoy your TP2.
I found the screen brightness was one of the biggest battery killers. Since I took it off auto adjust and set it to full brightness all the time, the life had significantly decreased.

I don't believe you.. I dare say that because I was a user of iPhone 3G.. battery is hopeless.. I SURELY didn't get that kind of situation.. My wife still has an iPhone 3G.. also can't replicate your kind of situation..
In anycase, I do not believe any mobile phone device, listening to music at >1hr can still be at 100%.. surely the battery reporting driver has gone haywire..
However I'm not saying TP2 doesn't have battery reporting issues. Infact most HTCs I use seem to report battery differently at times.. usually after a soft reset, it shows a different battery status.

It's just about how you use the phone.
I normally get a bit more than 2 days out of one charge, but then I'm calling and writing, surfing and checking EMails every 30 minutes, youtubing and listening to music.
Now I went over my data plan so I disabled the Mail-checking and did not listen to music for a while. The battery now lasts for 3 days with already 60% left.
I would say, one week battery lifetime isn't much of a problem if you don't use the phone's functions in any matter

Anyone bought one of these? Seems cheap - but if it works...
Comparin iPhone 2G with TP2 is not an apple for apple comparison. First compare with the ipHone 3G (Remember how poeple complained their 3G was lasting really less than their 2G and were switching from 3G to 2G to spare battery life ?)
Besides as many underlined the battery meter from iPhone is decieving (The TP2 has issues but less I believe)
In the end my TP2 last rougly 136 hours an I am quite a hevay user. Even if the iPhone last longer (I dont have an iPhone so cant compare both feelings, and my previous remarks come from my friends' experince who own one), the nice point with the TP2 is to be able to replace the battery with another one
wu dudes, well,my tp2 comes in 7 days.... i'll test it and than post here about life batery.... and freeway4you maybe u charge your batery when its not 0%. if you do that the batery is gonna be weak. sorry the english...

Yea i've had that same exact problem today, charged it, went to sleep and i woke up it was almost empty. I went back to the shop and replaced it, i'll see what happens now. Although after doing some research I think that it has to take some cycles to reach full capacity. Good luck bro ...

battery problems

hello all.
my tg01 has some problems:
1) after a full charge the battery goes to 10% in about 20-30 min of 3g opera, is this normal?
2)after a full charge the battery goes to 10% after one day of 3-4 phone calls 5-10 min each, is this also normal ?
I bought the device 6 months ago and i didn't use it for about 3 months( didn't charge it).
Is there any way to fix this problem , can i format the battery or anything else?
( i use one of the latest of miro roms based on win 6.1 with spb shell and a hero-like theme with about 75 megabite of free ram .)

Basically, the system the TG01 uses to measure battery charge is very inaccurate, one reason is that it is not measured correctly, to demonstrate this restart your phone, and guess what, you magically have a extra 10-20% battery remaining, but even that is inaccurate as it will probably drop off very quickly back to where it was before you restarted!
And in answer to battery life, well this is the big achiles' heel of the TG01, battery life is poor, its fine if you are not far from a power point or car chatger all day. This is simply a symptom of poor design, the device was designed to be the slimmest mobile phone in the world at the time, yet draws a lot of power when using certain functions and is equipped with a inadequate 1000mah battery capacity.
You cannot format a battery, but you can buy another one!
I bought a second official battery on ebay to solve this problem to a point.
Buy a Mugen-Power 1300mah battery or opt for the extended 2600mah or 3900mah batteries and you will have very good battery life, but a very chunky 1" thick TG01.
tenks for the answers. WHAT will be the improvement with a mugen 1300 mh? does anyone have it already ?

Literally a 30% increase in battery life over the stock 1000mah battery.
Here a video of how Mugen 2600 and 3900 looks....

Battery Charging Strategy

Did HTC change the way devices operate when plugged in?
With the original evo 4g, it would run off the battery even when plugged in. Is that still the case with their newer devices (including the lte)?

I don't know the answer, but a fascinating question. Laptops don't run off the battery when charging (at least I don't think any ones I've ever owned do). So why should phones? They're basically little computers now anyway. I suppose we'll need a manual to know the answer, or an HTC rep.
While I agree with your assertion above, that was not the case with the original evo.
As is recall, this is demonstrated by using battery monitor widget or similar, with history enabled. The data would indicate that once the phone reached 100% charge, it would begin to discharge until about 90%. At this point it would start charging up again (until 100%) and the cycle would repeat.
If the phone is running off the charger while plugged in, the battery level should remain at 100% the entire time. Sure there were kernels available that would change the charge rate or thresholds. Anyone with an evo 3d care to chime in?

That seems rather silly - what if you grab the phone off the charger when it is just down to that 90% marker? It will show up as 100% I presume, and then drop rapidly down to 90%? Hmmm... No wonder those SBC kernels are so useful!
It's the same reason most new laptops give you a battery health option that only charges to 80% if you keep a battery at full charge for an extended period of time the cells will overheat and eventually lose some of their charging ability kinda like when you use a float charge on a lawnmower battery it's on a constant charge and discharge to keep the battery healthy same rule applies here.
Whatever they do/did, I hope it's well thought out, considering the battery is not removable. Once the cells degrade,...phone is shot. A bit disappointing. I'm not here trying to fight about nonremovable battery and how long it will last, and ability yo swap out batteries. But the idea that battery degradation (which is inevitable) = shot phone DOES give me pause and concern.
sent from 2yr old Evo on ICS
Even after a year, there is noticeable diminished battery capacity. I've had the seidio 3500 in my original evo since about feb or march of last year. Fast forward to same time this year. I'd say it easily lost 20-25% capacity. With my typical usage, I could go for up to 4 days without having to recharge (yes, light user). Now, it's 2-2.5 days. I was bothered by it enough that I did an rma. Seidio said that's normal wear and tear. Fortunately, the credit card I used had an extended warranty feature too, so that's what covered it.
There will likely be a tear apart video/howto posted eventually on the evo lte. Although the battery may not be typical user replaceable, i'm confident it is possible to open the device with minimal damage.
I'm sure there will be a way to switch batteried, you'll just have to go to a phone tech probably. I'm not worried anyways, I'm still using my stock evo battery and it's still going strong

I'm sure you can fork over some cash and get the battery replaced. I wouldn't lose any sleep over this. iPhones have survived with non-removable batteries for many years (although I always used that as a "con" in my comparisons between Apple and Google's respective phones).
My Evo 3D will discharge to 95% then back to 100% and repeat. It is done to keep the battery in good health longer.
Sent from my iPhone with the bigger Gee Bees.
Bump since no one has given input after "release". Very interested if we will still need to do that "turn it off, charge, unplug, charge, repeat" thing.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
i would guess the phone uses the usb power source and not the battery because a few days ago my battery was low and i plugged it into my car charger and continued to use the phone,A few moments later i got notified that the phone was useing power faster than the charger could supply it

This is true, But iPhone users have no choice. So they get used to it.
Android, at least for now, has choices regarding removeable batteries.
IPhone users also have a 3 1/2"? size screen, which they got used to.
I'd Never purchase an Android device with that size screen, even if it was available. I highly doubt they'd sell many of them with that size screen.
Reminds me of when I thought my HTC Touch Diamond's screen was so large, compared to my previous clamshell devices prior to that lol!
It was such a nice screen for its time, just like the iPhone was a nice screen for its time, but that time has long passed, except for iPhone users :-(

**Samsung Galaxy Note 2500 mAh battery mod - Yes it works great!!!**

For those still using the TG01 I've just done a mod that gives my TG01 9 days on a single charge... that's right, 9 days on a single charge!!! Of course it depends on usage.
Image 1 (see thumbnails) shows the completed mod. I did this by making a battery tray out of 1/4" square pine rods I picked up at an RC hobby shop. The rear cover is Mugen's from their 2600 mAh battery kit.
Image 2 shows the battery connector (black). I snagged this from an HTC 8525 junk mainboard. It has 6 contacts and only needed 3 so just left the full length to add stability.
Image 3 shows a top view of the installed battery tray and the wooden retainer strip to the right.
Image 4 shows the battery tray and battery comparison.
Image 5 shows the battery tray sitting on top of the original Toshiba battery. There was a lot of tedious work to make this tray but it wasn't too difficult.
This mod has so far exceeded my expectations. Buying a genuine Samsung OEM battery (joint Japan-Korea product) probably is one reason for the fantastic performance. And the phone isn't very heavy. The new Samsung battery only requires a single charge, unlike my original multi-battery pack which required charging several times to get a full charge. The inherently inaccurate TG01 battery meter is still present but not a real problem with this mod.
I also bought an aftermarket 5000 mAh 'fat' battery kit for the Samsung Galaxy Note in case this one didn't meet expectations and am in the process of slightly modifying that battery (adding extensions to the electrical contacts) to use with this tray. I will have to modify the back cover as the 'fat' battery is 15mm thick. I'll give an update once that mod is completed and tested. If anyone would like additional details, photos, etc., just let me know.
--------------------------------------------
Update - Finally had to recharge my phone again. This time it managed 6 days (instead of "about 5 days" that I reported initially)!!! TBH these were mostly fairly light days, no videos and games, a mixture of calls, some camera shots, and some Internet browsing. I also forgot to turn it off one night. The battery might have lasted a full week but my TG01's whacky battery protective circuitry turns the phone off when the battery level falls below "28%". After popping the battery out to recharge in my external charger I decided to check the voltage. What to my surprise the battery still had around 3.2v remaining. I was thinking WTF as it's safe to discharge li-ion/li-po batteries down to 2.75v. I wonder if there is a way to override this ridiculously conservative setting. If anyone has any idea please chime in.
--------------------------------------------
Update #2 - Oct 24th
This Samsung battery just keeps getting better and better. My 3rd full recharge cycle yielded 8 full days of light usage. My 4th full recharge cycle jumped to 9 full days!!! The 5th cycle resulted in 5 days of mixed light and heavy usage and still probably had another day of use left. See my response to fxdjacentyfxd below for more details.
Cheers!

Yes, you certainly may. I can take some more pictures and provide more details if you're interested. The only difficult part is to find a battery connector from a junk phone to connect the new battery. You will also have to modify the original TG01 back cover if you don't have the Mugen 2600 mAh kit cover. Other than that I used some heavy gauge copper wire to make the new battery tray harness and pine wood for the tray. The original Toshiba battery was the template to make the new wood battery tray. Again, this mod is a little tedious but not too difficult. I used pine wood for the battery tray as it is very light, strong, and easy to work with.
Good luck! :good:

Thanks Jacek! I appreciate the complement, especially coming from you, the battery mod master. :good: Yep, unfortunately the TG01 forums are beginning to have only echos as most have moved on. I really like my TG01 as it still does everything I need except for Skype & 3G. I confess I'm too lazy and a bit scared to mess around with cooking a new ROM to change the radio since I have no experience in such matters.
Regarding this battery mod I have to say this Samsung battery is incredible. I'm currently on day 8 of fairly light use (3rd recharge cycle) and my battery is finally down to 30%. I reboot the phone several times daily to update the inaccurate TG01 battery meter.
Regarding the battery meter I do have a question for you. Is there a way to modify the battery driver(?) or ??? so the phone will not shut off until the battery discharges down to 2.8-2.9v? We're losing quite a bit of time before recharges since the phone shuts off between 3.2-3.4v. Toshiba really screwed up on that one.
I'll be updating this thread so stay tuned my friend.
Cheers,
Jim

We're losing quite a bit of time before recharges since the phone shuts off between 3.2-3.4v. Toshiba really screwed up on that one.

As I remember when I was developing stub for original battery driver [ in fact my driver it is not native driver because I have ( I guess nobody have ) no knowledge how to access hardware responsible for battery measurements. It behaves exactly like device driver but calls original battery driver and sometimes ... cheat so that work with TG01 was possible under 20%. You know my 26% ]
I realized I had not any influence when TG01 shut off. I was doing some measurements. Sometimes it shut off when battery is about 3.2-3.4 ( typically ) but sometimes it shut of when battery is 2.91V . Take into account that having 3.2-3.4 battery have of course some capacity yet but You realize that there are ( can be ) big current flows ( peeks ) that can very easy do decrease voltage on snapdragon and other hardware below 3V and lower. I guess that is why voltage level when TG01 shuts off is so different.

Greetings Jacek,
Sorry about the delay in responding. Had a cancer scare and had to take a trip to Bangkok for a complete physical. Luckily no cancer and all is good.
Regarding your question I was forced to reboot the TG01 several times daily or it would frequently turn itself off in the middle of phone calls. With my new Samsung battery I don't have to reboot it anymore but still do when the battery level drops to an indicated 30%-40% as the TG01 battery meter routine is still faulty. This new battery is so good it will last a full day even when starting at 30% charge.
I've been documenting recharge cycles and phone usage. Before going to Bangkok last week I got 9 full days of light usage! While in Bangkok I was using the phone a lot including lots of wi-fi time. I still got 5 full days with 30% remaining. I could have gotten another day but decided to recharge as hospital stay and overnight bus trip back home would have been too long before I could recharge.
I am extremely happy :victory::silly: with this new Samsung battery mod. Even still, I'm considering trying to modify my mod to use the new Samsung Galaxy Note 2 battery, rated at 3100mAh. Unfortunately, the Note 2 is so new I can't find the battery dimensions. There are no free lunches and since it has 24% more capacity it has to be 24% larger. If it's just 24% longer I can possibly modify my existing rig. If it's any wider it's not an option. If it's thicker then I would have to buy the 'fatter' Mugen cover like you have. At this late stage it isn't worth it, especially since this mod works so well.
Cheers my friend! :good:

Hi Jim.
Nice to hear You are healthy
It seems You are becoming best known battery mod maker in the world
It is nice You still want to do something with tg01.
Recently, after some rom modifications I had problems with frequent tg01 system restarts but it seems I know what was wrong. Having opportunity, i changed radio to 321 which seems to be better for talks than radio 1600 I typically was using.
Tests are in progress.
Cheers

Greetings Jacek,
Thank you for the kind words. Glad you were able to solve your radio problem. I made a mistake by putting one of my 1100mAh Cameron Sino batteries in my TG01 again. The reason was I had discharged my Samsung battery and had it on an external charger, but needed to make some calls. Now my phone is back in slow mode again unless I have Bluetooth turned on. I hope the problem is only temporary as the phone has been working perfectly until now. If you have any ideas please let me know.
Thanks, my friend!

Hmmm , once again. You removed Your battery pack then You inserted fully charged Cameron Sino battery. From this time Your phone works very slow and only cure for it is to switch BT on ?

Yes, it's the exact same problem I had for months before I did the Samsung battery mod. Miraculously, the problem went away as soon as I installed the new Samsung. I have already removed the Cameron Sino and reinstalled the Samsung, but the 'slow' problem is still there. I have no idea why.
Thanks!
Jim
Tell mi Jim, having previously Samsung battery, You always drained it totally before charging( untill tg01 shutdown itself ) or rather You were charging it to full state again without tg01 shutdown ? It is "paranormal activity" for me but maybe reason is concerned with the fact that You removed power totally ( battery exchange ). I know it sounds stupid. Were You exchanging Samsung battery pack in the past many times and nothing wrong was happening ?

Let me start by saying the original s-l-o-w problem just disappeared as soon as I started using the Samsung battery. I have to say that I have had NO problems at all using the Samsung battery. In fact, the experience with the phone is so much better because I don't even have to think about the battery anymore. Keep in mind it's a single battery so there is no fighting between battery protection circuits like I think I was having with my multi-battery mod.
To answer your question, at first I drained the Samsung battery until the TG01 auto-shut-off turned it off at around 26%. I did this because I read that a new battery needs several full discharge/recharge cycles to get maximum capacity of the battery. This has proven to be true as capacity increased each cycle finally leveling off at 9 full days between recharges. I've also partially recharged the Samsung with 30% remaining with no problems. I've only gone through about 9-10 recharge cycles to date with the Samsung because it usually lasts 8-9 days between recharges, dependent upon usage.
During this time I have also used the phone a time or two with the original Toshiba battery while the Samsung was charging, because the large Samsung battery takes a full day or night to fully recharge. The TG01 did not suffer the s-l-o-w mode then. It was only after I put the single Cameron Sino 1100mAh battery back in that the s-l-o-w mode problem started again.
I'm relatively sure a hard reset will fix the s-l-o-w problem because it worked before when using the Cameron Sino battery pack. Unfortunately the problem would come back. Now I believe the Cameron Sino battery's protective circuit may be damaged and caused the s-l-o-w problem. I won't be using that battery again. I'll update you after I hard reset the phone.
Cheers, my friend!
Jim
P.S. - Could you please post or send me your finger-swipe-to-unlock file? Mine disappeared during one of the master resets. THANKS!!!
Hi Jim.
I wait for Your hard reset results. Having opportunity maybe You change and test radio to 321 ?...
I do not quite understand what You mean "your finger-swipe-to-unlock file" ? You mean You want to remove "lock screen action" after going sleep at all ?

Hi Jacek,
I still haven't backed up my phone yet so haven't done the master reset yet. When I first installed your custom ROM it had an Android type 'swipe to unlock' feature. I disabled it because I had the auto-screen orientation turned on and it made the swipe to unlock difficult to use. I stopped using the auto-screen orientation a long time ago because it is so laggy. I'm having to unlock the phone using the original Windows Mobile unlock feature which is crappy and would like to add the swipe to unlock feature.
Thanks!
Jim
Jim, I am getting older but I can swear I have never had any android-like software.
My custom rom has always had default WM6.5/WM6.5.x screen locker/unlocker disabled. As You surely know, this unlocker is based on sliders. Maybe that is why You say it is like in androd. Being disabled, older fashion ( WM6.1 ) screen locker is active but as You said and I can confirm, it is poor working software and that is why I personaly for my usage, totally switched off and screen lock/unlock. I do not need it at all. You can enable sliders in registry by only one switch value.
All I really needed was some kind of screen locker when TG01 is active ( let's say navigation software is on ) and You want to put in to jacket pocket or to any bag.
Without any "touch" disabler it is very probable that You ( Your pocket or bag ) touch the screen. I created some piece of software ( assigned to camera button ) that locks the screen when I want and unlocks when I want.

Jacek
Hello does anyone still use TG01?
The Samsung battery will be fully charged from TG01?
Any idea haow to modify the back cover?
Thanks

Yes, it will be charged fully by TG01 internal charging circuit as long as the electrical contact points line up correctly. I did not modify the back cover. Instead I bought a 2600mAh battery cover from Mugen, who makes 2 different battery kits for the TG01, 2600 and 3900 mAh. If you don't mind paying a high price for their batteries you can just order a kit. Here is the link to Mugen:

Good luck and hope this helps!

I think they are no longer selling replacement cover.
I see only expensive kit battery + cover ($79,95), I paid the full TG01 less
I'll try to do my best on modifying original cover for an inexpensive samsung battery

I sent an email to them at: [email protected] and asked them to sell me just a replacement back cover. I lied and told them I bought the phone used and it already had the Mugen 2600 mAh battery and cover but that I had dropped the phone and damaged the cover. They sold me a new cover (with stylus) for $14.95 U.S. dollars, which included free international shipping. This was back in August 2011 so don't know if the price is the same now.
Their batteries are OK, but don't know why they charge 10x price for them. Since the TG01 is now a very old model they will probably be glad to sell to you just the back cover. They call it "backdoor".
I hope this helps. Good luck!

Battery drain at 10%

As soon as the phones notifies me that I reached 10%, its like I've actually reached 1%. The phone shuts down 1-2mins after stating I'm at 0%. This happen with no battery hungry running apps. Is it a common problem? Did someone find a fix?

battery % display is not exact in general
This happens to me on all my devices. It's a pain in the ass but I guess you learn to live with it.

Had it from the first day I had my X+ and mentioned it a couple of times in the battery topic. At those times it seemed that I was the only one with that problem. This sudden death comes in somewhere between 8-18% left. Sometimes it shuts down the very same moment the 8% battery left pop-up shows.
I am going to send my device in for warranty this week..
Edit: Phone is at the service center ATM. Fingers crossed..

They installed a new battery which fixed it all Battery percentage is very very linear now.

Doesn't happen on my Desire HD with ParanoidAndroid on the same version as my One X+, and this kind of thing does happen on the X+. As soon as it gets to about 10% it starts going down really really quickly. Sometimes it goes directly from 5% to 0%, I've watched.
Often, at low battery, a full reboot (reboot to bootloader and then boot from there, rather than a hot reboot) will fix it.
Would really suck if this is a hardware issue as it would be terribly inconvenient to get it fixed.
A lot of times it's that the battery controller hardware in the actual battery doesn't know exactly where 0% is. so it estimates until it's been fully drained once or twice. but fully draining isn't super good for lithium batteries, so it's not always worth bothering with. just know "I'm getting wicked low and should probably charge".
Also, remaining capacity is usually inferred from the voltage the battery is providing, if I remember right. because powering the screen, radio, camera, etc takes a more or less static amount of voltage to operate, as the pool gets lower (as the battery discharges) it becomes increasingly more difficult to accurately represent the amount of charge left since each individual component takes up a larger percent of the remaining pool than it did when the battery was fully charged. When the battery is super low, it can appear to have 10% left when relatively idle, but if you try to snap a picture or play a youtube video (data/decode/etc. components being used), this can cause the available voltage to drop suddenly as those systems are engaged.
Rule of thumb, the lower your battery gets the less accurate the % remaining actually is, since you're not using up units of power that are all being held in a battery shaped tank. it's a dynamic environment of volts and amps that humans want to see represented in a single unit (percentage).
Obviously there's a lot of analogy in there, but I hope that makes sense
This has always happened to me on my One X+, but doesn't seem to happen as bad on my Nexus 4 or 7, but if I reboot either with a low battery this number drops a lot. It seems as if my Nexus devices just adjust the number durring usage better, perhaps dropping the percentage faster to catch up with the actual capacity, the One X+ just seems to stay on the high side until it dies.
It's those small things that make me a bit frustrated. My girlfriend's got a galaxy s3. Yesterday while having 7% battery left she downloaded can knockdown 3, we played for a few minutes and it dropped to 5%
Then I did the same thing, downloaded ck3, and played two levels and it went from 17% to dead in less than 5 minutes. And the game ran smoother on her phone.
Come on HTC!

It also seems like an HTC specific issue to me. On some level all devices have a form of this issue, but it's never as pervasive as with my One X+.
