I know I am jumping the gun because alot of people are still trying to decide whether they are going to manually update phone to 2.2 or wait for carriers like AT&T to push it out with their bloatware.
Well I just spent the last 8 hours manually updating mine to 2.2 and glad to say it worked after piecing together many forum posts.
Universal Androot does not work to root phone now that it has been upgraded to 2.2. Does anyone know of a method to root a 2.2 Dell Streak?
Thanks in Advance.

im pretty sure at&t have to root via adb or fastboot? i dont think any apk files dig deep enough to root... most upgrade/downgrade threads should show the procedure
Z4root, but make sure you have 1.3 (1.1 did not work for me 1.3 did)

Super one click 1.5.5 is the only reliable rooting tool for android. Z4root and others are known to brick phones....
I used SuperOneClick to root my carrier unlocked Streak. My phone info:

Rooting Dell Streak 2.2 with SuperOneClick (failed on Linux, worked on Vista)
Just thought I'd add another data point that may help Streak owners to get this to work.
I have a:
Dell Streak running 2.2
Baseband: GAUSB1A131800-US
Build: 12821
(Full history: It's a Best Buy AT&T version, unlocked by the carrier since they are nice guys if you ask nicely, originally rooted with Universal Androot, upgraded from 1.6 to 2.2 via QDLtool, then upgraded OTA to an official image, which then lost root. I wanted root back, hence the need for SuperOneClick).
When running on Linux (Ubuntu 10.10), SuperOneClick 1.5.5 was failing to get past chmodding rageagainstthecage. Trying the various tricks on the official post didn't help. The machine is properly set up for Android development, so it should have worked, but it wouldn't.
Running under Windows Vista on a different machine, SuperOneClick 1.5.5 worked first go. No issues.
So, my contribution: if you have this baseband and build, odds are it will work. But if it's not working on one computer or OS, maybe try another.

I have same unlocked phone and tried several methods posted here, no lucky to me. below is my successfully root experiences:
PC OS window XP with SP3
1. download Universal Androot -1.6.2 from below link
http://www.taranfx.com/how-to-root-any-android-phone
or directly download from below link. wait for several seconds, regular download
http://fileape.com/index.php?act=download&id=nbwL8xPE1eMAQw0Z
install the application on phone and root your phone
2. install dell streak Android driver only
I download R291096.exe from dell.com
double click it. it will be extract to C:\dell\drivers\R291096.
there are adb tool located on C:\dell\drivers\R291096\ADB-V1P0P25.
Adb drive is located on Win7 or WinXP
2.1 I delete previous installed android driver by android SDK using USBDeview (small tool can view and delete all usb drivers)
2.2 set your phone as USB Debug, then link to your PC. a window will pop up to ask you install ADB driver, you should follow instruction and navigate to
C:\dell\drivers\R291096\WinXP... until it finished.
2.3 check whether the driver is correct.
open CMD and type C: then hit key Enter, then type
cd dell\drivers\R291096\ADB-V1P0P25, and hit key Enter again, then type
adb devices, if it show your phone's IMEI number, it means the ADB driver works.
2.4 exit cmd
2.5 unplug your phone from PC
3. Unmount SD card on your phone
4. install SuperOneClick v1.6.5 on your pc and run it by click button Root
...ok ok ok
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
5. instal Root Explorer on your phone and open it. navigate it to
System/Apps
Change R/W to R/O (tap the icon)
Long Long Press on app you don't want, then Delete it
delete cache
Hope this helps
As far as I know, the technique listed here has always worked on 315 and 318:

I have been trying to read as much as possible before posting, but I am finally out of answers. I have a retail Dell Streak 5 unlocked running 2.2.2 build 17397, ver. 360, baseband GAUSB1A136000 that I have been trying to root for a while. So far I have tried SuperOneClick and Gingerbreak since those are the highest success methods. SOC won't allow me past step #5 and Gingerbreak hangs in the "rooting" screen for over 20 minutes until I give up.
I have tried Gingerbreak by installing from SD and direct via e-mail. The debug USB option on as required and the SD card formatted and mounted. I met the SOC Windows XP (only PC available at this time) requirements of .NET as well. I thought I would post all the details of my phone to see if you guys can see something that raises red flags. I have been reading around and not many people had ver. 360 at the time of rooting.

Manii's link details the only rooting method that has a 100% success rate: manually installing StreakMod Recovery then flashing Superuser.zip. One-click root solutions may be very successful, but the tried and true methods are infallible.
Thanks Strephon and Manii. I was wrong in thinking that StreakMod could only happen when rooted. After I got StreakMod on, it was gravy from there. Thanks for that link!
Hi guys,
Is there a way to root the 406 rom without Fastboot(USB)?
I have a busted PDMI port (bent pin) which Dell refuse to replace. So I'm stuck with wifi and direct transfer to SD card only.
I was running Streakdroid 1.9.1 and managed to install the 406 (recovery406.img) with the 'flash_image' command from a terminal on my phone.
Rebooted in recovery and installed the 406 (update.pkg).
No issues with the update and my baseband is now: GAUSB1A140614-EU
Android Version: 2.3.3
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-perf
Build: 19940
I'm stuck with the next step though...
Is there a way to root so I can run, 'flash_image recovery recoverysm.img'?
or anything else I can do to load the GingerStreak-2.4.4.zip file?
I've tried z4root (1.3.0) and Universal Androot (1.6.2 b5) without success. I tried Gingerbreak too, but after 30 minutes it never completes (most likely because I'm not connected via USB right?)
Any ideas??

i guess u can try this
flash_image requires root, which all custom roms are pre-rooted.
the only correct way to install a custom rec is though fastboot, flash_image works but not generaly supported. I don't believe you can root any rom newer then 360 without using superuser.zip which requires streakmod which means you're completely stuck on your rom
Ah ok, thanks for searching guys I really appreciate it!
The stock 2.3.3 is ok for now I suppose, battery life seems to have dropped quite a bit though.
I'll wait a while before investing in a new port.... perhaps the Gingerbreak man will release a working update for this rom soon
Cheers.
For anyone in Singapore, there is a guy who can replace the PDMI port. Search Facebook:
"SG IRepair
Hi is cost around $90 include installation. Jimmy 81121061"
I'll still keep my fingers crossed for an updated Gingerbreak for now...

try flashing any recovery img file (depending on what rom/pkg are you trying to update) on your streak, do not reboot. just take out the battery right after flashing (DO NOT REBOOT , if you reboot it, it will just go back to your default recovery) and then update your new pkg or zip file .... you're done downgrading/upgrading
you do not need to root your device anyway....
for exampleut the Streak_351_15609_00(2.2.2).pkg (froyo) on your SD card .... flash a 351 recovery img, then after flashing, take out the battery. turn your device on (hold volume up + down + power) ... choose number 2 then your done.. your device will now update your rom...
First of all i want to thank you in advance for any help in this matter. Following the instructions in the forum, i downloaded the latest version of Flashtool available (0.6.7.0). After installed in my windows 7 (32 bits) notebook, i run the application and connect the phone. The software recognize the unit and the android version without problems. So i decide and press the root option (The unlocked padlock) and it begin to work. At the end of the process an error message appeared indicating that it can install the busybox software and its stop. The phone is working, but nothing appeared regarding if it root the unit (I think that that no), so when i ran the flashtool utility again, at this time the unlocked padlock is not available. Can anybody help me with that i will appreciate so much.
Waow Nobody can help me in this matter?

U have to use azuzu downgrade and azuzu upgrade kernels and try. follow these steps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196421
Hope i helped!!
Try upgrading to 2.1 if u want to stay on 1.6 try get a flashable 1.6 idk if they do them
Good luck

SE kernel

To root 1.6 you need UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta5.apk
That work perfect and you could root temporary or full
Try to find it or ask here if someone have it on sd and attach it
;-)
To root Android 1.6 z4root should work. Just search for it

@OP:
I think you would want to upgrade to 2.3.3 then use the zergRush exploit on flashtool to root your phone.
Thanks and additional question
Thank you everybody for your recommendations. Some of you recommend to upgrade to the latest version, my question is if i can use this latest version of flash tool to upgrade from version 1.6 or do i need to use an older version of the flashtool and which version.
Thanks again

It seems like the filesystems cannot get remounted - even after busybox has been copied to the /data/.... directory.
Any ideas?

My current ROM is: e1908_v77_jbl1_9p017_6628 build date: 20121220

Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
Use superone click
Finally got it rooted - here's how.
Hi all, my first post on xda-developers
I was really annoyed by the fact that no procedure seemed to work on my Star N8000+ (JB 4.1.1) e1908_v77_jbl1_9p017_6628 ORIGINAL STOCK ROM. I tried everything, from SuperOneClick to chinese rooting software... Nothing seemed to work. And since I have an untouched stock rom, and I had no wish to reflash the phone, I was left in the dark.
But, after lots of searching, experimenting and tons of trial-and-error with trying to understand scatter files and partitioning stuff, I finally managed to root my device with no need to use adb or to reflash the phone.
I'm posting a step-by-step guide for complete noobs like me. So here's the method I used (hope it works for all of you who aren't getting any luck with other methods, just like I was):
Download this file N8000+e1908_v77_jbl1_9p017_6628-Root.zip and copy it to your phone's sdcard;
Enter the phone's system recovery menu:
Turn phone OFF;
Hold Volume + key and turn phone ON. Keep holding Volume + until the below robot picture shows on your device. When it appears you can release the Volume + key;
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Press the menu touch key (on the left of the phone's home button). A list of options will appear.
Using the Volume + or - key, highlight the "apply update from sdcard" option and press the phone's home button;
Using the Volume + or - key, find and highlight the N8000+e1908_v77_jbl1_9p017_6628-Root.zip file you've already saved on your sdcard (step 1). Once highlighted, press the phone's home button. Update will start;
When the update finishes, reboot your phone by using the Volume + or - key to select the "reboot system now" option and then press the phone's home button. Phone will reboot normally.
After all this, you should have root access to your phone
Files included on zip:
su v. 1.27
SuperSU v. 1.30
BusyBox v. 1.20.2
As always people mention when posting such procedures (and I think they are right), do it at your own risk. Although I feel and think that the above method is pretty safe and harmless, I will take no responsibility for any damages your phone may suffer. If you feel insecure about anything, just browse the sources on the zip package to check that the contents do not intend to harm your phone. I can assure you that I did all this just to try to help everybody who's out there, lost with rooting this wonderful device.
The above procedure worked flawlessly on my Star N8000+ (JB 4.1.1) e1908_v77_jbl1_9p017_6628 ORIGINAL STOCK ROM. If your phone version is different, it may or may not work. I think no harm could be done by trying (I guess the worst thing that could happen was the update to be refused to be applied due to certification incompatibility or wrong scatter/partition info). Once again, do it at your own risk.
Bonus: un-Root.
If you managed to successfully root your device using the above procedure, then you can undo it (unroot) by following the same above steps again, but instead of using the original zip file posted on step 1 use this one: N8000+e1908_v77_jbl1_9p017_6628-Root-UNINSTALL.zip
After flashing X10 with generic 2.1 firmware and almost killing phone, I hve finally managed to get my phone back alive by flashing stock branded (orange-uk) rom.
But I am back to 1.6.
How do i get it to 2.1? I cannot find stock orange-uk 2.1 rom anywhere on the web.
I want to unlock the phone for use on another network, but every tool i try to use says 1.6 must be updated to 2.1
I believe SEUS etc will update it to past 2.1 so that is no good.
I have learned from my previous mistake, and know that I cant just flash a generic unbranded 2.1 rom or the phone will not boot.
What is the correct procedure? I have read post afrter post on here and my head is spinning.
Please help.
Thanks.

I am glad flashing orange firmware has worked i will gladly assist you updating to 2.1 or 2.3?
First of all to avoid any more stress and problems I would recommend a custom ROM based on stock 2.3 if you follow the instructions its idiot proof!
1.install the Sony erriccson flashtool from the following link http://androxyde.github.com/index.html?1365028941000
2. Root your device via flashtool ( the flashtool will prompt you with the entire instructions step by step)
3. first go to settings/development/Usb Debugging and enable
4.connect your phone with the usb cable and let your computer find the drivers
5.once drivers are installed open flashtool 0.9.10.0
6 select advanced/root/force zergush

7. this will root your device and install SU (super user) it will also install XRECOVERY which can be used to install custom roms
8. Unlocking the bootloader! before the next stage there is a warning this will void your warranty with some devices but by doing this it opens much more options in regards to different roms by unlocking the bootloader this will automatically update your phone from 1.6 to 2.3!
you unlock the bootloader by selecting plugins in flashtool once you have succesfully rooted
its simple to do and as long as you stick to the instructions of flashtool it should unlock your bootloader! dont be tempted to unplug your phone while the process is in operation as the phone will restart many times while it completes and it will ask you to plug/unplug/restart in a box on flashtool!
once you have unlocked your bootloader you are able to flash custom kermels will have custom recoveries x recovery and clockwork mod recovery which is arguebly the most used by all custom roms on all phone models on xda
9 if you want a stock based rom i would reccomend Donut HD this is the most stock based rom and can be flashed without unlocking the bootloader it is based on the official 2.3 firmware for the xperia x10i http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574185
10. its very important that you do a backup of your current rom by doing this you can restore the current rom if any errors arise this is done by entering xrecovery by pressing the back button repeatedly as the x10 is booting up then under backup & Restore scroll up and down using the volume up and down and press select by pressing the middle hardware key see below
11. thats it your ready to go
12. download the rom put it on your micro sd card ,enter xrecovery by pressing the back button repeatedly as the x10 is booting up
11. (remember the backup first) factory reset (full Wipe)/wipe cache partition/advanced options/wipe dalvic cache/ wipe battery stats /back/install custom zip/choose custom zip from sdcard/scroll to the downloaded rom and select enter! once installation is complete wipe dalvic cache in advanced options then reboot phone
thats it your custom firmware should be installed ! if you still require to unlock the sim then you can do this after installation

Thank You
Thank You for this tutorial.
Im going to try again tomorrow (need some sleep now lol)
Just a couple of questions...
1. I am using 0.9.10.1 and not 0.9.10.0 - Is that OK? or should i dl and install the previous version?
2. You said to unlock bootloader via plugins option, but FAQ for flashtool says bootloader plugin will not be visible if current fw is 1.6
3. flashtool is throwing up some java? errors...
04/023/2013 02:23:37 - ERROR - (FlasherGUI.java:2101) - Cannot identify your device.
04/027/2013 02:27:19 - ERROR - (FlasherGUI.java:1620) - The part1 exploit did not work
Let me know what you think?
and Thanks again

To my knowledge he has tried update through seus and was stuck on boot loop at the Sony erriccson splash screen I agree a official update through seus or PC companion would be better but he wants to update to 2.1 and PC companion will update it to 2.3

Have you rooted first? Make sure you have your phone and debug is on in developer options
If you are having difficulty rooting then use the other option instead of zurgush in advanced

Ive updated it through both PCC and SEUS and the end result is the same - doesnt boot pst SE writing
Also strange thing is after upating, SEUS says that an update is available? (its like going round in circles)
The 1.6 orange rom that i sucesfully flashed is not the same as the original one (different CDA) but it works
OK im gonna give above tutorial a go now, but still not sure about the 'plugins' bit?
aaargh im having no luck at all with this
Tried OTA update, but it said that i must use computer.
Tried tutorial, but can get it rooted.
