I know that many people are annoyed by the atrix supporting few fingers for multitouch. I know firsthand that many emulated games are impossible to play without 3 fingers. I also know that the atrix hardware wise supports up to 10 fingers.
This is probably too challenging to fix (if it was easy, one of you devs would probably have fixed it) but I will ask anyway.
Is there any feasible method you guys can come up with to get this thing doing more than 2 touches?
Perhaps this method would work?

Where'd you find 10 points? That would be amazing. Also, if it truly supports 10 touch points, why in the heck would Moto limit it to two?
Yes, I'm pretty sure this is more on the hardware side...
Your iFixit link says "The front panel houses an Atmel mXT224 touchscreen controller underneath the LCD connector. It's the same chip we've found on the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Nexus S, and HTC Evo 4G." It's known that the Nexus S/Galaxy S phones can register up to 5 individual touch inputs. I have a nexus S myself and can confirm this.

This is a header used by a kernel-level driver. This would require a kernel recompile = modified kernel, which currently isn't possible to use with a signed bootloader.
So no. This method won't work.*

Motorola and Apple are currently locked in litigation. They're suing each other for patent infringement. HTC is in the same boat.
Samsung and Apple are current bedfellows- Samsung supplies lots of parts for Apple, and have more than likely entered into a cross-licensing agreement. Hence, Samsung can implement 5 point multitouch and not get bit by Apple.

When you connect the atrix to use as a "mouse" in webtop, (anyone who has the hack for HDMi webtop knows what I mean) it has a three finger gesture to pull down the notification bar or something.
This singlehandedly proves, this has nothing to do with patents, hardware, or anyhting
Motorola just felt like it.

Galaxy S even supports 10 points by hardware limit. The driver was just limited to 5 points (doesnt make sense to put 10 fingers on that little screen). And afaik nexus s should have the same touch sensor.

I have used the webtop "mouse" and have no idea what you're referring to.
No one is arguing that the hardware is limited to 2 points. The touch driver has a hardcoded limit. You can verify this by either using one of the multitouch test apps (Dotty, etc) or by coding your own and debug incoming touch events (MotionEvent.getPointerCount() will never exceed 2).
This means there was an arbitrary reason why Motorola did this. What reason could this be...
Performance? Yeah, 10 touches never brought the Galaxy S to a crawl, and the Atrix has beefier specs. Unlikely reason.
Incompatibility with MotoBlur? Possible but unlikely- code that supports 1 or 2 touches will simply ignore events with pointer IDs beyond 1 or 2.
Not useful? Unlikely- there are plenty of games and apps that support more than 2 touches. Personally, I find the lack of more than 2 points frustrating when using a SNES emulator.
Besides the Apple multitouch patent feud, what other reasons are there for Motorola to cripple a flagship device?
"it definitely has capability for more than 2, and to test this, go into webtop mode (either via multimedia dock or the webtop mod hack) and click the Phone window. Slide three fingers down - it brings down the notification panel. One just moves the mouse and two is used for scrolling."

That's not an accurate test. I can slide three fingers down and it will bring the notification panel down without being in webtop. You can slide 4 fingers and the same thing will happen, because the phone will only register two.

The screen will recognize more than one finger on the screen at a time. Like when you pinch to zoom, the screen recognizes you have two fingers on the screen at one time. Some programs take advantage of even more such as SOLO. My question is, why would you need more than 4? What app takes advantage of more than 4?
oh ok thats what i thought it was but other then 2 fingers, what do you need 3 ,4 or even 5 multitouch points? Who does that?

Can you explain what you could possibly be doing that would require more than 4 touchpoints on the screen at one time? Or do you want it "just because"?
Fruit ninja for one is an app that would be nice to use five on, and some multiplayer games. Why do people really need their phones OCed to 2.0 GHz, it's not a necessity, it's just nice to have in case you ever need it. I thought one of the points for these forums was to push are phones to the max of their capabilities.
Can someone make a kernel that supports 20 touch points? I want to use all my toes also.

I am thinking about selling Flyer and buy Galaxy Note as a replacement.

I know, but it is not what I ask, actually
I personally wouldn't want to go below 7" for working with a pen effectively and I also have my doubts about the palm rejection technology on the Note. The HC upgrade which should eventually make it to the Flyer might address a lot of issues people have with pen use.
If you're looking for a tablet that can sustain extensive writing sessions, I'm going to say that the Flyer is probably the better option. If you need a phone, you'll obviously need to go with the Note, unless you're in a non-US market that carries the EVO View variant.
I agree with veethree that going below 7" is questionable as the Flyer is already borderline wonky to write on. However, I don't think palm rejection will be an issue. Both N-trig and Wacom sidestep the need for palm rejection by simply turning off the touch function of the screen when using the pen. There's a lot of confusion about this amongst the user community and techblogs. It's probably just poor communication from OEM's, but this is how it's always been. You have to bring the pen close to the screen first, BEFORE you put your palm down; move the pen away to reactivate the touch screen It's unnatural as most people put their palms down first, but that's how it works. In the absence of active/passive digitizers, software palm-rejection becomes the name of the game.
As far as smoothness of the writing, I think that really comes down to drivers/software from the OEM's. I've used N-trig and Wacom on Windows tablets, and I didn't notice any differences, suggesting the hardware is quite similar.
The Flyer's pen does seem to write smoother in the Notes Mobile app (pulled from Lenovo's Thinkpad Tablet and running on the Flyer), presumably because Notes Mobile uses a different shared library supplied by Lenovo. Again, suggesting smoothness is a software issue.
Finally, in my opinion, the experience is a lot better with the Honeycomb leak installed. Have you tried this?
I don't believe galaxy note using wacom technology. There is no single statement from Samsung that declared they are using wacom. They just saying that they are using their own S-pen technology.
Until now, wacom has never announced it has implemented its technology on android, because their digitizer based on resistive screen.
I suspect that galaxy note still using enhanced capacitive pen based on the software specifically designed for the small screen so it does not need a palm rejection technology. But can you imagine how uncomfortable it is to write to the screen size for daily use?
If you feel laggy using notes on gingerbread flyer, please try to deactivate the keyboard while scribbling with null keyboard. You will feel the smoothness although writing rapidly. So, this is just software problems and not because of the hardware!

I don't think Wacom uses resistive screens - the ones I have used (tablet PC world) are all active digitizers on non-resistive screens.

Again, I think this is more misinformation likely due to OEM communication, or lack thereof. Wacom makes digitizers using either either resistive or capacitive touch-screen layers (my HP tm2t is a capactive touchscreen w/ Wacom digitizer). The touchscreen and digitizer are usually two separate layers, and I suspect the Galaxy Note will use a similar setup. Wacom and N-trig are proven tech on Windows Tablet PC's, so it would be interesting and surprising to see anything else.

I use a null keyboard too that someone put up on the Market, but I find it only addresses usability and not smoothness of the actual writing. I think HTC just needs to polish their drivers and/or shared libraries to get a smoother experience if the Lenovo implementation can be used as some kind of reference.
Android community has stated that the Galaxy note has wacom technology. Engadget said it has capacitive super Amoled display. On top of that Samsung is going to public the pen SDK in this coming December to encourage developer to create more app for the note. For me, I agree that a 7 inch display is a lot better than a 5 inch display in term of writing experience. But I believe galaxy note will have a lot more support and more great apps. If they had a 7 inch galaxy note right now , I would jump to it right away.
I hope that HTC will learn from Samsung to attract developer and media for the flyer.
I've watched a couple fo those demo videos of the Galaxy Note, and the Wacom inking support looks a lot like Tablet PC quality (smoothing, pressure, etc). I'm like most here though - 7" is about the bare minimum I would want to write on - but that Super Amoled screen is to die for...

This may help. There is an hardware dissection on engadget of the Galaxy Note, "Behind the Glass"
Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but after much looking around on here the web, I haven't found anything that really answers this very question.
I was looking at the HTC Flyer to replace my rough sketchbook (nothing will really replace my pencil and paper for drawing stuff out, nor am I looking to replace my graphic tablet on my desktop, I'm just looking for something that I can hammer ideas out, thoughts on colour, etc) but after reading the various threads I'm now not so sure if that is a good choice.
There's been a fair bit of plugging for the Galaxy Note and it's S-Pen and wondering if anyone has any experience with both? Did the author for this every settle on a device?
I'm not too concerned about the lack of ICS support for the Flyer (although to be truthful I haven't had much Android experience so I don't really see how much lack of support will effect the device....although being a Windows Phone user from the get go has given me more than enough 'support issues'), nor am I looking to replace my phone.
The size for me would be an issue, but it's not as important as performance of the pen.
Pretty much everything I've read that actually talks about the pens (as opposed to other functions which hold no interest) mainly discuss writing, but I'm looking at this a purely drawing point of view. I've seen some examples of the sketches on the Flyer on a different thread and they looked pretty good, but if anyone could offer an informed opinion I'd really appreciate it, don't want to get lumbered with some half arsed device.
I'm loving my NT---and I'm sure I'll love it even more when we start getting custom roms that newbs like me can install hehe---but I noticed something while playing games.
Now, I got my NT spoofed for Nexus S, and I found that when playing Modern Combat 3, I can only use two points of contact at a time (ex. Joystick and firing). If I try to use three points of contact (ex. Joystick, aiming, and firing) something gets left out. This suggests to me that the NT is dual-touch, not multi-touch.
Is this a software thing or a hardware thing? And if a software thing, is there "an app for that"?
Thanks

hrm.. actually, I'm sorry.. this is from my past experience with samsung multitouch devices and some research that I've been doing on our screen while trying to get ubuntu operational. Upon further investigation... apparently there is a special chip which contains firmware that talks between the kernel and the touchscreen. It is entirely possible that this chip is programmed to only handle 2 fingers.
I've had my photon since October. I've been an avid HTC fan until I picked up this phone. Sold I was. I've never looked back.
However, I really like the new evo lte. I have serious problems when it comes to new toys that are easy to obtain with something as simple as the swipe of magical plastic.
That being said...
My theory on Motorola and the rumored Photon Q is as follows;
Motorola has said, according to an article on either engadget or AC, that the quad core Tegra 3 with lte will be ready Q4. The fall CTIA is October 9th - 11th. I'm gonna say we will either see an event a week before or an event at CTIA in October. Things just seem to be coming together like a good game of tetris.
Now I really don't wanna burn and uograde when I'm expecting to see something amazing from Motorola. I'm also betting Motorola picks up the ubuntu project which I also think will be shown off in October.
That's a lot of speculation... Lol
So, I'm thinking I'm gonna keep the photon and buy a dock and a keyboard and a mouse and hook it up to this 73inch monster sitting in my living room. Only problem with that is the reviews saying that webtop just sucks a big set.
Questions...
Is webtop that bad?
Is it worth it for somebody who might find it useful?
Is all the functions of the device still there? Text and calls and what not.

Webtop sucks. Useless. Has really specific use case scenarios and very, very little beyond that. Good news is Moto know this, and have made some head way towards fixing it with the new ICS webtop on the RAZR, which will presumably be included on the Photon's ICS update. It's basically the ICS tablet interface with properly scaled apps and a separate home screen layout from the phone. Quite cool.
Tegra 3 is ****e, though, and I can't imagine the LTE variant will be any better. Snapdragon S4 trounces it in very meaningful ways like browser performance, battery life, and audio quality. I desperately wish the international/open market One X had S4 instead of Tegra 3 (Though I still wouldn't buy it because the One X has no SD slot... Whereas the Evo LTE does). If I had the option, you bet I'd buy the Evo LTE over whatever Moto churns out at the end of this year. Next year, under Google, Moto might have a shot - and open bootloaders. This year I for one have been burned enough.

Useless if you are locked but if you unlock it has near unlimited potential. ICS Webtop on the other hand is a joke and is a move in the wrong direction. ICS Webtop should be an extension of "Mirroring Mode" and Moto should replace the current Webtop with a proper desktop environment. If Ubuntu and I can run a proper desktop environment on an Atrix/Photon why the hell can't Motorola. Here's a write up as to why stock Webtop and ICS Webtop are full of fail.

Citrix web apps. And if you use it for work, and your company has a draconian device policy that makes it easier to authorise one device and use it on multiple screens rather than actually use a laptop.
Apologies for neglecting the Ubuntop/Webtop Plus dev. Have yet to try it thanks to being stuck on locked Moto devices myself. Looks great, and I can think of many more uses for a full Linux distro in my pocket.
I actually like what they're doing with the new webtop, though I wish it was more powerful and could run the phone apps in a window like the old webtop. There's a lot of merit in taking advantage of Android's built in scaling, and having a separate UI with widgets and so on for larger screens is a great idea.
Ultimately I wish webtop was ChromeOS, since that would make the most sense from a Google product and service consolidation perspective.

Like Loki said, his Ubuntop makes webtop into a beast. Your performance will compare with the original netbooks in some ways, but in another it just makes your device infinitely more versatile than just a netbook. Even if you don't extend webtop, basically imagine a Chromebook that uses Firefox instead of Chrome. The only other native application would be the Cell phone window that lets you use your cell phone in an IM like form.
It's not all bad, it's a heck of a lot better for nothing. Before I changed webtop I mostly read webcomics, social sites and used Google Docs. After Lokifish's improvements I now have Bluefish, Abiword, Gnumeric, a real desktop experience that doesn't sacrifice anything from the phone. It is only too awesome to have your phone move seamlessly from being a handset to a miniature computer without any skips in calls or text messages. Since I chose to integrate Google Voice I can text from the web without anyone being the wiser.

How much faster is Nexus 7 compare to HTC Flyer for real world usage.
I've been using Flyer for about a year now and it's seem to be very slow to me, especially when surfing websites.
Can Nexus handle flash better with Quad cores and all?
I want to know if it worth giving away my Flyer and buy Nexus 7. If it's not too much different, then I'll just keep the flyer.
I've had both and TBH with my Flyer being overclocked to 1.84 GHZ I can notice no difference between the two in smoothness when browsing, tweeting, reading..etc
That said though, JB and quad core does make a difference ofcourse, especially when games are concerned.

I don't know about the Nexus 7, but for your Flyer, you may want to try the Puffin Browser off of the Android Market/Google Play before you buy another tablet. It sped my web surfing up tremendously. The company suggests trying the free version of the app first.
Also, u may want to search Nexus 7 + flash. I've read that it doesn't natively support flash (not certain), but hopefully that's nothing that a downloaded app can't fix.
I have great browsing with Boat browser.
Trust me its a huge speed difference. You guys saying its barely noticeable are just lieing to yourselves. Its like comparing choppiness to butter. Yea there similar alright. Cmon now.
Aside from speed the flyer has a full 7 inch screen in complete use (gingerbread only) and a nice pen function going for it.
yeah gotta agree with you. nexus 7 is faster. That feeling when I use my brother's Nexus7 and then i go back using my flyer ><

Im in the EXACT situation haha
Flyer good...Nexus incredible!
I've had my Flyer for over a year and have been fighting rom issues since then, it is workable (except GPS...Shame on you HTC for not fixing this!). Side by side -I've had my Nexus for 3 days now, the nexus screen is brighter, better contrast- whites now look slightly yellowed on the Flyer. Nexus speed is much better(expected), BT, GPS, & WiFi all operate flawlessly. I am using a usb adaptor cable from Amazon ($2.00)! to further expand storage and also connects to other devices for file transfer and viewing.Battery life on the Flyer was a solid 4.5 hours with constant video loop running- I expect 2/3 to twice the run time with the Nexus. I have a rooted-32g Nexus...couldn't be happier at this point!
Final note- I side loaded Flash and it works well with Firefox Beta.:fingers-crossed: Update:Boat browser is very fast and stable, I usually have to reboot my Flyer a couple of times a day due to lag or sometimes freezing...not so with the Nexus.
The two aren't even comparable. The N7 blows the flyer/view4g away in every aspect. I have the Veiw4g and the N7, and I don't even use the view anymore. It's so slow and crappy, it's not even worth it. If you are thinking about getting the N7, just do it. The flyer is dated now, and it's not going to get any fast no matter what you do.
Oh, and as far as media consumption goes, the N7 can actually handle everything I throw at it. I can't even watch my vulkano in anything more than low res on the view. But the N7 I can put it to it's highest quality setting and it works great. Same with Hulu, and Netflix. As well as streamed content from my HTPC.
I've played with the N7 at stores and it's pretty nice.
If Someone gave me one for free, I probably would use my flyer drastically less.
However, as much as I want project butter on my flyer I find that it would probably be a waste of money for me to personally upgrade. I'll still do the same stuff with either device.. Browse web, facebook, read books, and avoid pulling out a netbook when I can. So it raises the question why upgrade if I have a perfectly working device?

You sir are corect N7 blows but not Flyer away but simply BLOWS; with no SD card, no stereo sound, no vibra, no front camera, no pen, no HW buttons; so wjhat extra from cpu and scree is there left at all? No sim?
So that means:
limited to no small amount of space
Cant do videocalls (good luck with mirrors)
No silent alert wheil in classes, meetings ect...
Less screen
ect ect...
For mine usage of device it BLOWS unlike Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 wich is quite nice; more up to date device then Flyer and has that "magic" JB/ICS, wich Flyer doesent; but even with the JB ports we do have for Flyer we have more working hardware then Nexus have. And good luck with rearlly suported tegra games.

Umm, they are coming out with a 3g N7, you realize that, right? The sound between the two is comparable, as I HAVE both. Is having vibrate really necessary on a tablet? And it has a front camera, just no rear camera? I'm beginning to wonder if you have even used the device. It has a front camera specifically for video calls. HW buttons are a matter of preference, but not a necessity. The pen I will give you, but when you can't even get HTC to FIX the crap they broke with the update, IT"S NOT WORTH DEALING WITH IT. I will never own another HTC device after HTC screwed us over on the tablets. (not to mention the year wait on getting ICS on my old Tbolt, or 8 months for the rezound I bought) The SD card missing is a downer, but there are many workarounds that it's not a total loss. There is WIFI storage sharing (so I can use the 80GB I have on my phone between it's 64GB sd and 16 internal) Then there is USB OTG.
So that means:
limited to no small amount of spaceYou are not limited, just not as easy to add storage as with the flyer/View
Cant do videocalls (good luck with mirrors)This is just flat wrong
No silent alert wheil in classes, meetings ect... Really? It doesn't have a LED, but it does still "alert", just on screen. How many alerts do you have set up on your tab? I have almost none. Mostly calendar appt's and such.
Less screenHow? If there is a difference(16:9 vs 16:10) its a matter of a .1 inch or so.
ect ect...

I don't play games, but I haven't seen anything it can't do yet. I would like to know how you figure there is more working hardware on the JB ports to the flyer/view than the N7? You have a rear camera/SD card. that's it. I have both. (actually, I have all three. View/Flyer/N7. The flyer is my Fiancees. and I have the View/N7.

As nothing is NECESSERY - i simply love them and missing them on SGTAB 2. Hiting HOME when u in full scree app helps a lot with time and pressing.

I cant give u sdcard to share u mine documents with is prity common on all mobiel devices. U cant film your gf or take pic of her, u cant draw or handwrite, no way to listen to quality music since onlly suporting 1 chanel insted of minimum 2 for stereo.

CORECTOMUNDO - u did figure it already with rear camera working SD slot but u forgot the pen and hw buttons we have stereo sound as well on JB and vibra working. All this is working on Flyer loaded with JB and is something N7 wont EVER have. Never Ever.
All i am saying is for what i need tab N7 sucks. Now if your onlly use of tab is a bit faster browsing i guess N7 is a winer buy. I unfortunally expect more. And there is much N7 does simplly not offer. Its not cheap for no reason I wont go into ghosting and cracking screens...

Right under his name it says "Location: Velenje"
I'm guessing his main language isn't english.
Pro-tip: Don't ask him to fix his english.

Yeah, I still honestly love the build quality on the flyer and it still has a relatively nice screen.
Since you are on the JB rom, I need to ask did they get the screen to turn off properly yet? That was the only thing holding me back personally. As long as it has good battery life I am really considering using it.

if you are referring to the backlight remaining on after locking the screen - it still occurs quite often. however, if i turn it on and off a few times it eventually completely turns off (can be quite annoying) i am really not sure of the battery life as i basically keep the flyer charged.
P.S. I recently had a few random reboots ( but only once while I was actually using it ) and it won't play HD YouTube - not that big o f a deal to me
Nah
