Can't get any OTA update - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Trying to update my mom's Fascinate which is currently running DI01. I have tried via wifi and 3g and also did the *228 thing but it still tells me the update server is unavailable.
I don't have any experience with dealing with the Galaxy-x devices (only used a nexus one and Dell Streak) Is there an easy way to upgrade to DI09 and then froyo? Can I put the update file on the sd card and flash through a stock recovery? Or any other things I should try? Thanks

Can anyone help with getting the froyo update?

i have the same issue, so i just flashed it through odin. Look for it in the development section from adrynaline, how to quickly update to Froyo. Lazy to look for the link. but hope that helps

Search my man, I had the same issue and it was resolved in my thread.

your thread? and which one would that be? [Q] Technical explanation of recovery, rom manager, odin, etc. or Battery bar mod cause thats the only two threads you have created? or are you referring to something else.
If you are referring to the other posts about putting the update.zip file from the ED01 update on the sd card and updating through recovery I am gonna give that a try as it doesn't appear anyone has a fix to make it work OTA (which would be a lot easier seeing as how its my mom's phone and not in my possession to do the manual upgrade right now)

[Q] Someone please help me. I'm lost.

Ok, so I've tried to do my own research and have come up with very little. It took me about a year to figure out what rooting actually meant and did. So I rooted my SGS vibrant and flashed a bionix rom (i think). It says "bionix shut down sequence initiated" or something like that when I turn it off (any ideas on what it is or how I can find out). I really have no idea what version it is. I also would like to put a new rom on my phone but am scared ill screw it up. I watched a youtube video that told me how to do it the first time I flashed anything. It works with a few random screw ups but KILLS my battery. I would really like for someone who knows more than me to explain what a nandroid backup is and how to do one. What the clockwork rom manager can help me do. What the one click lag fix did. Why my computer won't read the storage things on the phone when connected to the phone anymore. What is this odin thing. What is a kernel. will I still get the ota updates without the stock rom. Where did my stock rom go when I pushed backup before I flashed this rom in the rom manager app. Did I actually wipe all the original data from the phone. Why can't I restore boot animation with one click lag fix(it says somethings not found... Did I wipe/delete it?). What is an apk and sdk(or skd)? What is a voodoo lag fix. How many times can you flash beer something goes wrong. I'm really new to ALL of this and have had no help really when I've asked a lot of people who apparently know more than I. ANY help from ANYONE who knows ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Almost all of those questions can be answered by reading the Tips and Tricks or Noob Guide threads. Those two threads have given me all the info I've ever needed for the Vibrant.

Theres a lot of questions in there so I'll just bite off a few at first. Before that, have you taken a look at the vibrant bible thread in the dev forum? It covers a lot of the basic ' how tos '.
Firstly, you can possibly see what version of bionix you are running by looking under settings - about phone - build number. now might be a good time for you to odin back to stock and start fresh. Odin is a program that runs on your pc and can safely install a rom on top of any lag fix you may have enabled. You can read about using odin to go back to stock in the vibrant bible thread I mentioned earlier. Once you go back to stock you can receive ota updates from tmo if that's what you want or you can reroot and flash another custom rom. If you choose to flash another rom I would recommend reading every post on that rom's thread so you can learn from other's experiences. I would also recommend you keep reading the bible thread, theres a ton of good info there.
Good luck.

Dude, THAT is why I do those stickies, thank you! So glad it helped man!
That was really helpful, thank you and I will be looking into this more little by little. But I also have 2 very specific questions:
1. Is it possible to turn an htc windows phone into an android phone?
2. will I lose everything if I push the flash clockwork recovery in the rom manager app? I haven't done it yet but everything I've read has told me to do it the first time. I have the bionix rom running and don't remember flashing the clockwork recovery thing EVER. have I messed up or can I just do it whenever? And is it true thats how you make a nandroid backup because thats what I've read.
I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out, and being patient with me. You guys are the reason I love android. Thank you from your very lost, slowly learning, new friend.

Depends on the phone, many do have android roms available. Just look up whatever windows phone you have in the forum section and if there has been some android development there will most likely be a section in the thread devoted just to android development.
You need to odin back and start from new

ROM Issues

I have been experiencing ROM issues and of course this is the first time for me downloading ROMS; so please, I am not trying to live in ignorance. In fact, the opposite. I have done the research, checked multiple sites, blah, blah, blah.
I downloaded the latest version of CWM Pro Version. I backed up my current ROM and looked at some of the latest and greatest ROMS. I downloaded the SkyRaider Zeus ROM and liked it, but could not receive or make phone calls. I downloaded another ROM and the same issue. Plus, I had multiple issues with the certain apps not working (for example, LOCALE would open and close).
So, I reverted back to my stock ROM, which I like, but I keep having those annoying "updates" trying to download. Then, I also read on XDA...
ClockworkMod Recovery: The recent "5.x" update of ClockworkMod Recovery (CWR) has known issues. Particularly, it does not restore backups and will enter into a bootloop. For the time being, do NOT update to this version CWR and do NOT use Rom Manager to backup, flash ROMS, or restore backups because in order to perform these operations, CWR needs to be current. Links to how-to and alternate recovery images will follow after I've slept, drank some Jack, and further manipulated my mind into cooperating with reality.
So, some of you more experienced with Android could answer some questions...
Has this issue with CWR been taken care of?
Are these common problems with ROMS?
Will flashing a ROM in recovery take care of these issues?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!
Living by Faith in Christ,
Ryon
First off, never install a ROM in bootloader, you will brick your device.
I personally prefer to download the ROM from a forum, then place on sd card then manually go into recovery and flash it. I have never had a problem doing it this way.
Ah man! I used the wrong terminology. Thanks for setting me straight. I changed my first post so that people could answer the questions correctly in the future!
Any other wisdom out there would be great!

Yes. Everything should be working correctly as of 5.0.2.1.

Yes. If you did not flash the appropriate radio for that ROM (which from the description you gave is probably your problem). That may also be what is causing Locale to close depending on what it checks on startup. Remember, radios are flashed in bootloader and roms in recovery.
Will flashing a ROM in recovery take care of these issues?

No, you need to download a radio that is suggested for use with the ROM.
At this time, most use MR2-latest but the ROM threads should recommend one in their description.
Thanks for the quick reply! As with answered questions come more questions.
Could you help me understand the theory behind radios? I am not quite sure why the radio needs to be changed.
Also, what is the common program or app that most people are using to update or change their radios? I have heard of a few, but would like more wisdom.
Thanks again!

Radios need to be changed since the 4g devices can't use *228 to update roaming like 3g devices. If you had a TB on froyo you will need to update radio prior to root cause you won't signal after you flash your first Rom or after flash you better have WiFi or be near a computer or you won't be able to use ur phone.

[Q] [Bricked Fascinate] Please help!

Now I know this question, in general, has been asked a lot. I've literally searched and tried the solutions in other threads, but this phone might be beyond help. I just want to know if someone has another solution as to how to revive this phone. I honestly think my situation is different than most....I downloaded and installed Team Hacksung's ICS 4.0.3 Build 6.1 ROM and I was using it just fine for a couple of months. Everything was working the whole time. Today, I am browsing through my local news station's app and my phone freezes on me! I pulled the battery and restarted the phone. It boots up fine and gets to the startup screen with the time and the screen lock. I did notice right away that the digitizer screen was not responding to my touch because I could not slide my lock over to get into my phone. I tried a few more soft resets and still nothing. I did notice, however, that the soft keys at the bottom did respond to my touch and they blinked and provided haptic feedback, so at this point I'm thinking it shouldn't be a problem with my digitizer. So I took the battery out then put the phone into recovery and wiped data, cache and dalvik. Then I rebooted the phone once again and still no response to touch at the home/lock screen. I then proceeded to try to reflash the same ICS ROM all over again and that's where the problem started. I can get into download mode and I've already tried to load stock froyo and stock gingerbread, but nothing works. My phone will not go past the "Samsung" boot-up screen. I've already tried several other forums' threads on how to recover a bricked Fascinate, but no matter what I try to load with Odin, Heimdall or anything else, my phone won't load past the Samsung screen. I can get into Download mode and that's it. My phone will not go into recovery using the 3-finger method. When I run odin I get a success message each time. I've even tried to heimdall the files individually and even tried to reload the stock kernel. The other problem I am running into is a lot of the links on these sites are all broken so I am unable to get the files I need. Has anyone else ever had this problem?
Edit: P.S. When the phone is off and on the charger, the grey battery shows the "loading" circle (whatever you call it) in the middle of it, but never converts to showing the green bars moving up and down indicating the battery is being charged. The loading circle is also frozen and does not spin.

Are you referring to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070?
If so, I just did it and it won't go past "Samsung."
Did you do check repartition and use the atlas pit file? That would be key, I believe, in returning you properly to stock.
Droidstyle's guide has all the working links you'll ever need.

I used heimdall front end to load DI01 files, I didn't use any commands. Also, I was just referring to "Unbrick your samsung fascinate" threads on other websites. A lot of the links I found were outdated or broken.
yea unfortunately not many guides have working links these days...Mine is about the only one left that is kept up to date. Im very suprised a full odin session did not fix your issues. One thing left to try is to odin a older stock package like DL09
Found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526488
Just tried pushing the DL09 file in odin AND in heimdall and neither worked. I still get stuck on the "Samsung" boot and it goes no further. Can't even get into recovery....
I think I truly have a brick...
kinna long shot
but why not try a different PC and a new or different cable.
believe me a faulty cable did me in, a week back and i was sure at the time that my phone is gone, but then it wasn't as bad as the impression i am getting from your description.
all the best with this , and hoping that something solves this issue.
god bless

I am having a similiar problem now. I was able to odin an older CWM (3.0 blue I got somewhere). From there I mounted usb and loaded ext4_formatter_all.zip. I ran this script and odin'd dh03 and finally got back to stock. That's where I am now.
Hope this helps

I have a blue recovery [3.x, voodoo], here it is if the OP wishes to try it.
[Use Heimdall and select recovery]
cwm3_voodoo-blue.bin http://www.mediafire.com/?4ls06x8gha88vtp
cwm4-bml-i500-fascinate.bin http://www.mediafire.com/?2ny1ql66yh69bn3

05f3e376ca697fd0fb8700dea05254aa cwm4-bml-i500-fascinate.bin
I threw in an extra 4.x cwm for good measure, lol. [I saved these in a folder in case I ever needed them..I was going to delete the folder since I upgraded to THS ICS rom (build 7.1), but I decided not to delete them for some reason]
it seems OP sounds like he knows what he is talking about, but lets start simple.
Have you tried going all the way back to 100% stock?
In droidstlyes FANTASTIC guide
do section 5, perhaps try with out repartition or the atlas....that has worked for me in the past.
I know on my THS ICS 7.1 build i had a "sleep of death" (wouldnt wake up) and i was lazy and did the 3 finger salute and it would ONLY boot into CWM. a battery pop would have been fine but like i said i was lazy. i had to Odin back to stock in order to re-flash everything. [luckily i had a nandroid from a few days earlier]
Good Luck
Edit: I have never seen or heard of a fassy that CAN get into Download mode and not be recovered to 100% functional.
I'm just thinking out loud here, but here are two things to consider. Perhaps the senior members will comment.
1. Have you considered flashing a different bootloader?
2. Is it possible you have a corrupt stock and/or pit file? Have you tried re-downloading them and giving it another go?
OP, can you post the md5sums of the files, along with the filenames that you are using in Odin/Heimdall?
thanks
Well, I ended up getting a droid bionic from a friend, so I will turn this fassy into a project phone. If I can get it to work I will sell it or keep it for backup. Anyway...
I have not tried the older blue recovery yet. I will try that when I get back to my computer. It seems like I've gone beyond anything I've ever had to try with this phone. I read on one thread that if odin did not work, keep trying heimdall over and over until the phone boots up. I must have tried at least 8 times on one run. It still won't go past samsung screen. I can get into download just fine. No matter how many different cwms I try, I can't get into recovery using the three finger method. Im pretty knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff and I didn't flash the wrong rom or kernel or anything like that. I was running smoothly on an ics rom until my phone froze. I did have it overclocked with ns tools, but not at the time the phone froze. I honestly don't think its hardware related, but merely a glitch in the software or a bad kernel that does not want to come out? I have no clue....help me revive this baby lol...

I've tried different pit files from different threads. Even the one from droidstyle's thread. I've also tried different versions of the following stock files from different "known" and trusted sites: DI01, DL09, ED01, EB01, EH03, CM7, CM9 other ICS roms and different kernels that suit each both voodoo and non voodoo. And excuse my newbness on the terms, but what do you mean by flashing a new bootloader?

Bootloaders can be flashed in Odin the same way a ROM can. A bootloader is the rudimentary software that gets the other software up and running. When Glitch's kernel started requiring Gingerbread bootloaders for complete functionality, a lot of us realized that just having GB didn't mean you had GB bootloaders.
http://www.mediafire.com/?fqojvsynkff93hc
Hopefully this link will work. It's certainly worth a try. It doesn't seem like you have much to lose. I'd recommend flashing it the exact same way you do a ROM. There's a bootloader section in Odin, but most people avoid it. Good luck.

Reverting to Gingerbread from ICS

I've been having some issues with constant reboots and phone signal strength after installing ICS. I have tried both methods (fastboot flashes and CWM flash) and still have the same problems.
Unfortunately, I'm a newbie, and was an idiot and did not create a backup.
I would like to be able to revert to the last stable official Gingerbread. Any recommendations on version to revert to? I'm been searching here for hours, and every time I think I find a good thread on how to do this, the links to the files are all dead.
Can someone please steer me in the right direction.
Also, again, I am willingly admitting that I'm an idiot for not making the backup in the first place. I saw that so many people were having no issues at all, so I assumed I would not either.
Thanks.

I recommend you the ROMs NottachTrix, it has Aroma installer and lets you configure it to your own taste. Guess this one is the best, if not you could go with a stock GB, search for fruitcakes (don't like them because the bloatware).
I'm assuming that you already have or know how to install a recovery. If it's not the case, let me know and I'll help you.
Thanks. I have CWM loaded so I shouldn't have an issue.
I think I would have the best luck with a stock ROM for now. The problem is finding a stock unlocked ROM for GB that still has a valid link. 90% of the links I'm coming across here including fruitcakes are all dead links.
http://samcripp.com/files/
you can find fruitcakes here. works from your phone or computer.
be sure to thank Sam Cripp for hosting the files for us. and the project in the first place.
Thanks. I was able to restore back to GB, but unfortunately still have the same signal strength issues.
have you tried to flash a new radio? there are plenty of radios on that website as well.

sod on UCLL6?

sorry, don't have an sg2, nor at&t, just trying to help a co-worker so thanks in advance
1. is the latest update only available through odin?
2. if root isn't an option (and it's not in this case) would you recommend staying at 2.3.6 over the latest update? seems this new one was to fix the sod's people were experiencing but there are some who would disagree here. would just like to get an idea of what issues to expect if going to UCLL6
i spent a few minutes sifting around the forums here but i would appreciate a few responses, so again, thank you
The Odin flashable tar is available at Sam Mobile, and in the Download Repository. The Stock plus Root package is also available. See the links in my Signature.
There were quite a few reports from people who had sod on UCLC3 and said it was fixed on UCLL6. I only remember one report from someone who said they still had sod on UCLL6. My assumption, and the reason I went to the trouble of putting together the stock plus root package, was that the sod issue was fixed in this distribution.
As I recall, 2.3.6 had a fairly large number of little problems, so who's to say which is better. I haven't run stock since the first couple weeks in October 2011.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I saw your thread and will probably head over there. One other question... Can mobile Odin be used to update or just through a PC?
Edit: one other thing, does updating through odin wipe the phone? Text messages, app data?

To use Mobile Odin, you have to already have root access.
As for wiping the phone, yes. When moving from one base to another(like 2.3.6 to 4.0.4) you should always wipe the phone. There are apps you can use to back up stuff beforehand, and restore after the flash.
