evo 3D. 3D~>2D vs 2D photo quality - HTC EVO 3D

3D Photo convert to 2D Nicer than originally taken with 2D.
I have read few articles about this but couldn't believe.
I think this (myth) can be tested easily.
Just make your phone stand securely in place.
Place a detail thing infront of the camera.
Take both 3D and 2D photo, convert 3D photo to 2D
and compare it to originally 2D photo.
Aside from the image size (we all know that converted 2D is reduce).
Which photo is nicer in terms of color production, focus, details,
as viewed from the phone itself.
Hope someone can tried out, and test.

I have found that in low light situations, my pictures turn out better if I take them in 3D and convert them to 2D.

2 questions kind of related.
Is there a way to convert 3D to 2D pics on the pc rather than 3VO so we don't reduce size as much?
Also, how about 3D to 2D video conversion? I would hate to take a vid and not show others who don't have 3D displays.

[Q] HDR Photo and HDR Video

I don't know if you guys know what is an HDR Picture is, but it is a very nice picture, even the iPhone 4 have it on their phone and they only have 1 camera on the device.
HDR is capable by taking images in diferent exposures and then combine it.
HDR video is capable by using two diferent cameras at the same time using the same as above.
Now that this device, the EVO 3D, is capable of doing 3D imaging and video, it will be nice of doing HDR too.
I have a feeling that it will be capable if you program both cameras take diferent exposures at the same time and then combine the photo/video for an HDR to come out.
What do you guys think?
Anyone knows something about it?
It better be...

I'd be interested in hearing how you could do HDR using both cameras since they're both seeing two different perspectives. The cameras need to see the exact same thing, or it would look terrible. Current real-world examples of capturing HDR video with 2 cameras is done using a beam splitter, which you would not be able to use with the EVO 3D since you can't correctly aim each camera at the beam splitter.
I was kinda hoping you could take 3D images, and then view each 2D image separately... In regards to doing pure 2D photography, I'd love to see HDR as well, and even multiple focal points... imagine a video being recorded with a close focus, and an infinite focus, that you can use software to pan between on-the-fly, (and after-the-fact.) I think that would be awesome.
I would be surprised if the iphone4 can do HDR very well, honestly. I just purchased a Canon S95 and without a tripod it is nearly impossible. You get all sorts of ghosting.

EVO Questions (Sense, 3D, AutoZoom)

I just had a few questions about my new Evo 3D... I've been looking on the forum. but haven't found anything... So I thought I'd Ask..
Isn't Sense 3.0 supposed to support landscape mode on the UI? (is there an option to enable this? - 2.1, I think Supported this on my OG E4G.
Is the 3D camera/video supposed to constantly auto focus over and over? i can see maybe it needs to due to the 2 cameras. but it kinda gets annoying, when trying to take a pic.. haha.
Why does the 3D only work in Landscape mode? .. like if I take a pic in 3D, it will only take the pic if I have the phone tilted to landscape. which is crazy to me. Many shots look better from the portrait angle. which is refuses to take pictures that way. my thinking is. if its 3D. wouldn't the orientation not matter? and worse case scenario if it did. so I have a pic that you view sideways. But i'd still have my better angle picture, right?
Other than those issues, I've loved the phone. the 3D is better then I thought it'd be. a lil weird/different to get used to. I love the speed, it restored my texts from my previous phone, and deleting threads took seconds, not hours. that was really nice.
I believe that the screen has to be looked at horizontally because of the 3d technology the screen uses? Kind of like certain types of polarized 3d glasses. The 3d effect isn't the same when you look at the screen when it is vertical.

I'm only 99% sure of this one. I believe the 3D only works in landscape mode because the the cameras need to be in a horizontal fashion to take a 3D picture. The camera's have to be side by side instead of top and bottom.
I suppose if you took the picture in portrait, then were able to turn your phone horizontally without rotating the screen that you'd be able to view a portrait 3D picture, but then your picture would be sideways.
Whatever the case, the cameras need to be side by side. That is the nature of stereoscopic images. Ever seen a Magic Eye picture? Imagine trying to see the hidden image in portrait. Not possible.

I do like the 3D, but I really only like it when watching movies in 3D (i.e. Green Hornet) and when watching certain YouTube 3D videos. The videos made with higher end 3D camera equipment look really cool. The ones shot from Evo 3D don't look as good to me.
look at the layout of the lenses. If you tilt it on it's side it would be like tilting your head to the side. not to mention the 3D is more a fun gimmick than a primary use feature.
the only way they could take a 3D portrait picture would be if the lenses rotated to keep them horizontal.
the UI does not rotate does not do landscape, the one you were using was a port of either the desire z or shift that allows it due to the hardware keyboard.
i am sure it will be one of the first ports once we get root.
thank you for the replies guys.. i knew it'd be a good idea to ask here..
I did have another question.. I want to put thousands of pictures on my evo. (friends, pets, guitars, live concert pics, funny pics, illusions, etc) .. years ago, when I had my Palm Centro. I found, I was able to compress the images. and keep fairly good quality for that screen.. i was able to drop 2meg pics down to like 37k in filesize .. i was able to fit a couple thousand pictures on the sd card there, and it was somethinge like 300 megs.. it was nice.. i tried to copy those to my Ipod classic. and i guess the Ipod, did'nt like that.. as it re-created the pics bigger. but i can only assume to better fit that screen. so I was bummed out..
anyhow.. I would like to put many pics on my Evo 3D like that, but cut size. though keep relatively decent quality. if i open it on my evo, i'd like it to be full screen and clear... but compressed down from the 900k-2megs that the camera, or even the Evo 4G did..
Does anyone have any recommendations on either what resolution/quality to convert the pics too? / a program to do it? / advice?
I found a tutorial on converting video to work best on the evo. and it says: Set the EVO 3D Width and Height (the EVO 3D supports a maximum of 960 x 540 pixels) .. so that makes sense for video.. but not for pictures.. - but it was this tutorial that got me thinking.. (i also tried last year to find info on optimal pic size for the Evo 4G, and could'nt find anything and gave up looking)

Ok, for the photo compression question (if you still have it) I can point you in the right direction, but don't exactly have a solid solution for you. I use Photoshop and that has a feature to compress images. If you have that, great. But it's not worth getting just to compress photos. But the tool is "optimize for web." This strips the photo of all extra bits that won't be necessary. You'd want to be close to that 960x540 resolution too. Maybe try searching for photo optimizing software, possibly something geared to preparing photos for a website. If you find something and it asks how heavily to compress a jpeg on a number scale, usually 8 is a good starting point.

If I were you, I'd invest in a 32 GB SD card if you want optimal quality photos. As you probably already know, the more you compress a photo's file size, the more the quality of the picture degrades, especially with the JPEG file format. The JPEG file format, which is used on all the cameras I've played with so far, can compress an image down to a really low file size, but at the same time the picture quality degrades. The JPEG format also suffers from generation loss, meaning every time you decode and encode an image into the JPEG format, you lose quality. Personally, I prefer the PNG format over other formats since it uses lossless compression, but I don't think the EVO 3D's camera has an option to save in that format. The downside of the PNG format is that the file sizes are still larger than the JPEG format, but it's significantly smaller than the RAW format.
But then again, you're using a phone camera. If you were using a professional or high end amateur camera, I'm pretty sure things would be different. Basically what I want you to take from this is to try to avoid compressing/decompressing JPEG images often. It degrades the picture quality. I only wish the EVO 3D could save images in PNG format since it uses lossless compression.

Flatten 3D pics to 2D to double pixel count?

I am no dev, so wouldn't even know where to start, but am I mistaken in thinking that it would be possible to create an app that utilizes both cameras while taking pictures and then overlapping them to create a 10 MP file? I am plenty satisfied with the 5 MP 2D as well as 3D pics and movie, just thinking we may be able to get a little more out of this bad boy that we could share on sites like Facebook.
I know that the 3D pics will be flattened on their own to 2D when you try to upload to FB, but it seems that it simply cuts one of the images to create a smaller file and doesn't overlap them.
Thoughts?
Oh...and congrats and thanks to #TeamWin for pwning this beast and all of the devs for their continued help and support!
It wouldn't work the 2 cameras are slightly angled to achieve the 3d effect so if you flattened the image it would be a blurry image

How about two pics at the same time with different exposure settings.
Automatically merge the two images together for a dynamic photo.
The gallery already lets you convert the 3d into 2d.... It takes both images and does what you're asking.
IMO, it makes the 2d image look blurry after doing so.
I'd rather just get it on my computer and take the left (in focus image it seems to be) as it is more clear.

Is there a way to change the depth in 3d

The same 3d content viewed on both phones is going to have the exact same depth and or popout. All the screen is doing on either phone is showing two pictures, one to each eye. The same 3d source is showing the same two pictures on either phone so the 3d effect has to be the same on both.
I think you may be thinking of the camera and not the screen. The evo's cameras are farther apart and would likely make the point where objects appear to pop off the screen farther away on pics taken with the evo. However, if you view pics taken with the optimus on the evo it will have the same depth as when viewed on the optimus.
And to answer your question, you can only adjust the 3d effect in games not in any pictures or video. The games use computer generated images so the effect can be adjusted. In order to adjust the effect in pics and video you would have to photoshop the images seen by each eye which is not something the phone can do on the fly.

Really? Or are you a fanboy of htc?
Because on youtube and on some topics here, people do say the optiumus 3d has more depth with the 3d effect.
Basicly you just said that the 3ds, evo3d and o3d all have desame depths, pop out effects...?
Maybe you can explain a bit more why people are saying the o3d has a better effect?
So if you watch a 3d movie, both the o3d, 3vo and 3ds will have desame effect, depths, pop outs ect?
You made me all confused

Yes, the depth will be the same if you watch the same files on any of these devices. The screen can't change the media, only the media itself can change.
Do some reattach on how 3d stuff works and you will see what I mean.

Yes absolutely the evo 3d, optimus 3d, and the 3ds will have the exact same 3d effect when viewing the same source file, such as avatar 3d or any other prerecorded media.
What people are referring to when they say the optimus has more depth or the evo has more popout is the pictures and video created by the phone. Since the evo's cameras are father apart the two phones will create a different 3d effect even when taking a picture in the exact same location with both phones. This difference is due to the 3d cameras and has absolutely nothing to do with the screen.
The 3d effect simply cannot have any difference in depth when viewing the same prerecorded media. Do a little more research into how 3d works and you will understand this better.
people. i just asked desame at the optimus 3d section and this is what ive got:
You are referring to the differences in the cameras, not the screens. Optimus photos viewed on the evo will have the same depth as when they are viewed on the optimus. All these phones are doing is showing two 2d pictures on the same screen at the same time while blocking the opposite eye from seeing the other pic. The same 3d source will have the same 3d effect on both phones. The same source has the same two pics when viewed on either screen and therefore cannot have a different 3d effect.
Now if we are talking about different sources then of course the 3d effect can be different.

Only true if one assumes that both handsets are using a parallax barrier of the same quality which works equally effective. This doesn't seem to be the case. (3d images on the O3D are supposed to be more crisp and the viewing angle is supposed to be wider as well)

seems the optimus 3d uses another parallax barrier, so it makes the screen much better in handling 3d.
The viewing angles may well be better on the optimus but when you're in the sweet spot on the evo there is absolutely no bleed over from the other image. This can be seen be winking each eye independently. Therefore the parallax barrier isn't effecting the amount of depth in the 3d when viewed properly.
The amount of depth is determined by the source not the screen. I suspect when people say the optimus has better 3d they're either not viewing the same source on both or they're referring to viewing angles which has nothing to do with the amount of depth in the 3d effect.

Well thanks guys but at least with the 3ds it is possible to set the depth/power of the 3d effect. Maybe the optimus is set higher then the evo3d?
And will there be a fix so the evo3d takes better 3d photos?
It seems everyone agrees the optimus3d is better in that...
Most 3d games you can adjust it. When viewing a picture tap the picture select effects and adjust the 3d alignment to your hearts content. Make it appear far away or make it popout.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
3d games are very different than pictures and video. They are computer generated and therefore the 3d effect can be easily adjusted on the fly. I have two 3d games on my evo and both can be adjusted over quite a large range from off to a lot of depth.
Pictures and video are a different animal. On the evo you can adjust the overlay of the pictures, which is just sliding one pic to the left and the other to the right. Now this does change the amount of depth but on most pictures there is only one point where the image looks correct without the other image bleeding over. This feature is there to compensate for the evo's, cameras being unable to swivel like your eyes. The cameras can't go crosseyed like your eyes can when viewing something close to your face. Some images will get the other image bleeding over and this feature allows you to compensate til there is none.
The problem is everyone here seems to think some super quality screen on one beats the other. Lol.
Ignorant.
People don't even see 3d the same. Certain types of 3d may effect someone more or less than another.
The LG simply assist with focussing on the 3d content.
Thus the content appears smoother more in depth. When really as you adjust. The LG cleary does too.
That would help eliminate the card board effect somewhat.

3d recording

I have great success with 3d photos, but poor luck with videos. For example, if I bring a knife towards the camera, it looks doubled, instead of 3d.
Also, recommendations for editing the 3d videos and 3d text effects.
Thanks so much.

3d video
I agree with you the 3d video is worthless.
I had that originally until I noticed that where the camera focuses makes a difference. If focused correctly, the object coming towards you is clear. The problem is that the camera doesn't auto focus fast enough for quick moving objects.
