Same for me here... just updated to the latest version of Kies, and godbye connection!!
I'm also on Windows XP (Pro, SP3).
Any clue, anybody?
Just found a "solution": I restarted the phone and connected it to another USB port, with Kies running. This time windows notified a hardware installation problem, but the connection with kies went ok.
Strange that before, when I could not connect to kies, every time I connected the phone to the PC, windows was saying that "hardware was successfully installed"...
Rather weird indeed...

Does your phone connect normally via USB to the computer ? completely uninstall and re-install via a fresh download of KIES. Clear your Temp, %Temp% and prefetch folders. Check if the cable is faulty or not. One of these is bound to help you.
I have tried reinstalling keis and done everything i can think of but nothing seems to help. Before the update of kies my phone used to be able to connect via usb like normal ever since the update its all gone to pot

First of all, I must say that KIES is one of the worst pieces of software I have ever seen. It is buggy and you must hope it will work eventually.
I got one successful with my old phone (galaxy 551) after updating via ODIN first to the correct firmware for my country.
But with my current Galaxy S2 I had to go to the repair center who used ODIN to get the right version on my phone.
I now have made KIES work on my windows 7 machine. I had to install the UK version (not the country version) and used the connection problem wizard to reinstall the drivers. Now it says I have the current version of my firmware.
To go back to your problem. It would help if you post which OS you are on and which version of the firmware you have currently installed ?
Also have you USB error detection off in the settings of your Galaxy S2 ?
Hi,
got a S3 since a few hours and KIES doens´t install on my X64 machine.
It just hangs in the installer.
Any suggestions?
thanks a lot, nearly
Make sure your S3 isn't plugged into your PC at the time. For some reason Kies wouldn't install for me while my S3 was plugged into my computer. Hope this helps...
Yep. Don't use it! Use Odin to flash firmware.

Hi,
i got my S3 as a Media device now. How can i copy files to it? It doesn´t let me.

My Kies installation looped on 'Installing hotfix'. I just pressed cancel and it continued the installation. And it works fine afterwards as well.

SAMSUNG USB Drivers
You can use the SAMSUNG USB Drivers instead of Kies.

This is because of java - I can't remember which way round it is, but you either need to install it, update or uninstall it to get Kies to go past hotfix. I think its install
It's a common problem!
After flashing my phone a few times with different roms my pc running windows 7 64x gave me an error message when my phone was connected saying hardware I'd missing windows could not detect the device plugged in sometimes it works other times it doesnt. The solution to your problem is here:forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837434&highlight=hardware+id
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII
I'm having the same problem, and none of the solutions mentioned works for me.
The problem only occurs when the phone is connected to my machine running Windows 7 64-bit. It doesn't happen on another computer running 32-bit Windows 7.
I assume the problems lies with the 64-bit drivers.

Try this:
Uninstall Samsung drivers, reboot pc then reinstall Samsung drivers in compatibility mode.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try.
To do that would I just uninstall Kies, reboot, and then reinstall Kies using Windows XP Compatibility mode?
Sounds like its completely nothing to do with Samsung/Kies. The problem lies within Windows update I believe.

I had already tried that before I posted here - several times in fact. It was the "compatibility mode" you mentioned that I was interested in trying. How do I do that? Is that just a matter of reinstalling Kies in Windows XP compatibility mode?
Yes. Install it in compatibility mode for Vista but Xp.
I know you have tried my steps before but just follow it. Replace install kies with install kies in compatibility mode

Just to update this, I followed the procedure you suggested and reinstalled Kies in Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) Compatibility Mode. After rebooting the same problem happened again.
I then uninstalled Kies and repeated everything again, this time installing and running in Windows XP (Service Pack 3) Compatibility Mode.
That seemed better at first, but now I'm getting the "Hardware Id Missing" balloon come up again and Kies cannot see the phone.
Thanks for your help, but I'm still looking for a solution to this problem if anybody has one.

1. When you plug in your device on your phone screen it has a usb symbol at the top pull down the notification bar
2. Press Connected as media device (mtp)
3. Change from media device (mpt) to camera (ptp)
4 . It should work now

Have you installed Kies? Might help if you do not have that software to start. Although you should not 'need' it.
either install kies in your pc or samsung usb drivers in your pc. Now connect the mobile, it will be detected. you can also let the windows to install drivers using windows update
Hi, i installed kies on my laptop which is running win7 and when i connect my phone it just says "connecting" and runs like that forever. I tried reinstalling the drivers, reinstalling kies and even reinstalling windows but nothing helped.
Now i have two questions:
1. Is there any way to fix this?
2. Is it safe to flash something using odin on that laptop?

try uninstalling kies and clean its leftovers, then install first drivers then Kies. see if your device is connected, if not change pc or Windows ur running.
Hope this helps !
Follow this guide
You do not need to uninstal kies just Uninstall drivers
1. Uninstall any previous instance of USB driver
3. Download Samsung USB drivers 1.4.6.0 (the problem is with the latest drivers not pc)
4. REBOOT IF REQUIRED
5. Disconnect from internet (VERY IMPORTANT!!! - forcing Windows to install local drivers ONLY)
6. With the phone disconnected, install USB drivers downloaded in steps 3
7. Connect the phone and let Windows install the drivers.
8. Reestablish the internet connection.
I've connected my S3 to the PC several times, I've also rebooted twice and I've never lost connection again. while of course everything works as expected.

If having difficalty finding driver then download SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 QCOM TOOLKIT V2.3 install go to directory where installed. Find driver folder and install driver from there. Make sure drivers are 1.4.6.0.
You can then save the driver exe file and unistall the toolkit. No need to run toolkit or use toolkit.
