No Problems? - Motorola Photon 4G

I play with this Photon @ 10-14 hours per day, I have read each Photon Thread and I have not experienced ONE issue! Maybe I'm lucky. The only 2 threads I have posted in are the International Travel (I will get to test Sweden next month, but Sprint has it on their website) and the one thread where someone ask an Opinion on best smartphone (I could have took the easy road, but I directed him/her to mall, visit different carriers stores and play! Best smartphone for ME most likely will not be the best for you!) Anyway, just wanted to say hello, back to playing!

Same here, no problems so far. I am very surprised and impressed with this phone. Way to go Motorola.

I cannot type, but I have XDA configured!

I had one instance of not being able to be heard and being able to hear. Did the leaked update and have not had one problems since. Only problem now is not 4G on this side of town and since they are switching to LTE there won't be for this phone.

Woohoo! 4G is here! Mishawaka/South Bend area!

Finally! And 2 days ahead of the reported date! Just in time for the Razr and Galaxy Nexus! Not to mention I have been eligible for upgrade since last week
What does this mean, and why I am stating this in the DX2 forums? Because I intend to sell my phone (as I posted before) to a deserving dev. I have a few who hit me up in my inbox already. So now it comes down to actual release dates. The moment either phone goes on pre-order I will be buying it. So to the dev's who hit me up in regards to this device, 2 questions:
1. Do you want me to send the phone in for warranty (it has some nicks and scratches around the screen), or do you want it as is? Won't make a price difference either way.
2. Do you want to make a first come first serve deposit for the phone? I am going to put a $100 price tag on it.

Kinda makes me mad. I was under the impression that 4G in our area (SB) was not at least until next year. That's why I bought the X2 instead of a 4G phone. I read an article on Broadband Reports that we were indeed getting 4G in October. Sucks now that none of our lines are eligible for an update until late 2012!

Yea, according to what I read, it is their single biggest launch area to date. Notre Dame has had it since the start of the football season. Supposedly the tower was only supposed to be on during the game, but people as far as 20 miles away on any given day have periodically gotten the connection on their devices. It is supposed to cover South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Osceola, Roseland, Elkhart, Goshen, Dunlap(so I am assuming Niles, Edwardsburg, etc across the state line will get some of the bleed off).
http://news.verizonwireless.com/news/2011/09/pr2011-09-20g.html
SOUTH BEND, IN — T.J. Fox, Verizon Wireless region president, today announced that the company is launching the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Elkhart, and Goshen on October 20.

Well, hate to be the bearer of bad news... lol, but it looks like they are 3-4 months ahead of schedule on their rollouts. Which, to their credit is good considering tech companies are typically late. Atleast none of us have AT&T or Sprint who I would assume are going to be buying spectrum from Verizon soon(it only makes sense to expand faster).

[Q] **Question about rezound and verizon's network**

well i am new here and i think i'm finally ready to go into the android scene. i am selling off my iphone 4's on monday and i will be buying an htc rezound my questions are really:
! i've been reading around the forums with lots of people with battery woe's and that somewhat concerns me. because i need to get through and 8 hour work day. my iphone lasts all day with moderate use.
2 and i am looking at a new htc rezound on ebay in box (please note i am in the caribbean only gsm networks here) and it has a bad esn. now i will not be using it on verizon's network for sure it will only be on a gsm network and i have known people to flash cdma phones to sprint. but seeing as this has global gsm radio can i use this on a gsm network without having to worry about that esn.
3 how do ya root it (i'll look around)

yeah i'd almost definetly say stolen.
Considering it uses a LTE sim card it can't have a "bad ESN", lol. The fact the person willingly states that DEFINITELY stole it. Buy one from someone on the forums, they pop up all the time man.
Find another IMO.

If or when you get one you will need to unlock it then root it in the recovery. If you are new to unlocking you can use an unlock tool I made. It's called fenguepays auto unlocked and it works on all windows computers. You just need to make sure you get htcs drivers by installing HTC sync and you have usb debugging turned on in your phones development settings. Good luck

its a great phone, but yeah find another, that one is almost certainly stolen
Haha you know it's funny because I was thinking the very same thing. The seller hasn't responded as yet... It's pretty early though. I guess I'll search for another one.
I thought they already came unlocked for gsm?!? No biggie I'll get the hang of this soon enough
Try swappa.com they're pretty cheap there and there usually gently used or new

Photon MIA on Sprint's Website

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the Photon 4G is no longer offered as a choice on Sprint's website. The OG Epic 4G is even still there, but no Photon, it's missing in action...
Yes, Since the Photon 4G will can not support Sprint's LTE network, they have discontinued it. Phones that are only 3g are still there but the ones that could not be upgraded to support the LTE network have been discontinued and removed.

Well, that would make sense except they are still offering the original Epic 4G. So maybe it's Motorola and not Sprint.
I have not looked into the Epic at all. Can that phone be upgraded to be LTE? I know that the Photon can not.

well, either way, The photon has been removed from Sprint's store for almost a month now. There were theories that there was going to be another motorola super phone released in the near future, but those have yet to be confirmed from what I have seen.
I got the Photon this past September and as of 6/1/12 the Sprint website says I can uprade at discount prices on a new 2 year contract. Is this normal, or did they change their upgrade policy? Is anyone else seeing early update options?

From what I have read this is the conclusion I come up with...
Sprint needed to clear up some room in the phone lineup for upcoming LTE devices. They need to keep a certain range of phones for each category: budget, mainstream, and power user. The Photon was in the power user (top tier) category. Since they have the new EVO and will be getting the SGS3 as well as a few others, bundled with the fact that the Photon was probably one of lesser selling devices (especially since the release of the SGS2) it makes sense that the Photon was discontinued.
Of course we all know the reason why the Photon was not successful is because of the lack of marketing on Sprint's part and the lack of push by sales team within Sprint. I'm sure if someone came into the store and there was the Epic Touch and Photon sitting side-by-side the typical sales person would push the Samsung first.

If it wasn't for the signal issues with the SGS2, I would have gotten that. When I saw that it had been almost three months at the time and the signal issues hadn't been fixed, I decided against it. When I saw them side-by-side in the store, the SGS2 had a nicer looking screen, and the Photon was very jittery when I'd swipe from one screen to the next. Ultimately, I'm really glad I got the Photon. However, I remember talking to a lot of friends who had the same first impression of it.
I got the photon from Target mobile because it was $50 with my upgrade, and the SGS2 was $200. But the rep pushed me hard into anything but the Photon. He first pushed the SGS2, then the Evo 3D, and then encouraged me to look at an iPhone instead of the Photon. I was actually really discouraged until I got it home and realized what a badass it was!

Yeah, that's too bad. I still have my photon and was hoping for ICS goodness, but it was pushed back to Q4 2012 and likely won't get it. This is the only reason I went with the GNex. I hate bloat, but I do love my photon. It is interesting how Sprint is only interested in HTC and Samsung first before any other Android, except now pushing LG viper, but I bet that'll be a red-headed step child soon.

AT&T or Int'l HOX+?

So I MAY get the HOX+ when the funds are available. I'm a broke ass college student and I am really interested in getting the phone to help out more around here. However, I'm deciding on what to get. I'm on T-Mobile USA and they are almost done refarming their network in the Chicago market so I can get HSPA+ "4G" on it. T-Mobile should also be rolling out LTE next year as well.
Int'l model - Logically, much more development since it is in multiple countries
AT&T model - Warranty will be easier to do if anything happens and it'll have LTE.
Steer me to the right direction. Please and Thank you.
I don't know how it goes in the US but in Germany LTE is not widely available yet, and also the costs are much higher than with 3G.
I live in the city and would have LTE available here at home and when out and about, but it would be 27€ more per month for 24 month. So, my usage profile would just not make sense. I travel a lot on the high spped train ICE and 98% of the time there is only 2G available anyways, with 3G only in stations along the track when it stops. 3G is more than sufficient when I am out around town.
So, for me LTE is a waste of money (27€ x24month contract=648€ on top of my regular contract)
If the costs are closer to a regular 3G contract in the US I would go with LTE of course, just to have the latest!

I originally was going to go with the Nexus 4 and just had it delivered but I ended up going with the One X+ (AT&T). I was the first to say LTE wasn't needed, but after a few days with the One X+, I don't know if I could go back. It is just so stupid fast, if it is in your area, I would strongly consider the AT&T version just for that...
Plus if I remember right a few forum members pitched in to get Lloir a AT&T One X+ for deving, so there should be some stuff on the way for it.

What I am really worrying about it warranty. If it's a manufacturer defect, I can send it to HTC in Texas to get it repaired. I'm pushing towards the AT&T model since it is also a bit cheaper by ~$40

I got shut out of the N4 on Google's release day. But I had an S3 (sold it) and have LTE in my area so I picked up the One X+.
I am SO glad I did. It is one awesome device. Super fast and smoother than the S3. Better screen, camera, etc.
It made me realize that once you have access to LTE it makes no sense to revert back to hspa+. Take advantage of the technology as we are paying for the monthly service.
If I was not located in a AT&T LTE area, I would still pull the trigger because they are launching new markets like crazy. I have had LTE for months and they never announced it was available. They light up markets for testing sometimes months before they make it official and users.
Hope this helps.
The AT&T version seems to be the best bet! LTE is widespread
Thanks everyone!

I'm considering the same thing too. It looks T-mobile will deploy the LTE on AWS band same as AT&T, so this phone is more "future-proof" than Nexus 4. How do I get it carrier unlocked if i get one from AT&T store though?
Those of us state side need a DEV that has our device. If someone wants to start a "fund raiser" thread to get you an AT&T HOX+ you can count me in for $50.
Edit: I also have a line that is early upgrade eligible so that would be $100 off the device if that helps. If we can get the funds up I have a way I can get this too you Hasoon2000. Just PM me.

[Q] Buy Evo LTE or stick with OG Evo4G?

I've had the original Evo4G for 2 years and 4 months now. It has always been rooted and performs flawlessly and does everything I ask of it. When I saw the EvoLTE was coming out I really wanted one and I was/am eligible for an upgrade. I decided to wait a few months for the kinks to get worked out of the phone before getting one. Sprint offers the LTE for $99 presently and I'm tempted to grab one.
In the last few months I haven't been reading the EvoLTE forum but started reading everything a couple of days ago. I don't have a problem with the people who are critical of the LTE and are leaving it for a Samsung. The Evo4G is the best phone I've ever had and is the first HTC phone I've owned. As I said, it does everything I ask of it, is reliable, and I know everything about it.
My question to those who like their LTE's is this: Should I upgrade to the LTE?
I'm not willing to spend what it costs now for a Sprint SamsungSIII, $199-249 and have no idea if I'd like the phone if I did. I am concerned about owners here who tell of the LTE's Sense not working properly, of data problems, rebooting etc. I've never had 4G in my area and Sprint doesn't even have my area in AZ on the list of upcoming LTE service. I've paid that damn $10 monthly charge for 3G only which annoys me since I own a 4G phone that Sprint doesn't supply 4G service for. I can deal with continuing to pay the $10 for no 4g or LTE but I don't want to get rid of a phone that stays connected always, has a good download speed locally on 3g, and always works, for an EvoLTE that doesn't always work and continues to have problems.
So I guess I'm asking for encouragement to upgrade to the LTE. I'm not going to leave Sprint, the true unlimited Data is the most important feature they offer and I need the several Gigs of data each month that I continue to use. What do you owners have to say?
Thanks~
Get the EVOLTE My dad has an og Evo that I rooted and played with and the difference is just amazing. We compared side by side the stock roms and its night and day. Data speeds were better, apps launched much quicker, the camera took pictures faster and higher quality, and the list just goes on.
Don't listen to the naysayers on here, the new evo is awesome. There have been some LTE issues for some but I'm in the same boat as you with no LTE in the foreseeable future in my area.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
this phone is dope.. put this phone next to the phone next to the og evo and u will see it smokes the og evo in every way.. i had the og evo.. the evo 3d and now the evo lte.. i never had 1 single problem with this phone.. its beast! :good:
I also had the original for over 2 years and it IS an awesome phone. That said, if you are in a good signal area, the lte will run circles around it. Very comfortable to use and fast. I'm on MeanRom with mine, rooted and s-off. 3g signal reception is a full 2 bars down from OG and like you, I'm not gonna get 4g anytime soon. If you never roam in areas where signal is down to 1 or 2 bars you'll do fine. If you go into areas like that and making calls or receiving data is important I would wait a while. Personally,I hunt in remote areas a lot. If I'm going for more than a day,I just switch back to the OG for the trip and switch back when home. Good luck with your choice......

Honesty, my reception improved over my dads Evo... By a noticeable amount. We live in the boonies and also hunt a lot and he depends on me to get the calls on my phone because his phone doesnt even ring. It depends on where you live I guess.

as much as i like this phone id say check out the optimous g its a really nice phone overall already cracked. and just gonna be a matter of time before some roms start flooding on to it but thats just me i want it but my girlfriend wont trade me lol.
I would definitely say upgrade to the LTE. It's far better than the previous EVOs in every way, as others have mentioned. I'm one of those who will probably be switching to the GS3, but it's more for the experience of trying something different than what I'm used to over the last three years.
Thanks to all of you for your replies. I'm really leaning towards trying the LTE. My home is in a rural area outside the city and I have excellent 3G coverage. If I can have the same result with the LTE, root it, be able to operate on wireless, and have the "Hot Spot" as I do now on the OG 4G I'll be very happy indeed.

I went to the Sprint website and looked at the Optimus. It looks sweet, my phone before the Evo4G was the LG Lotus. It was a great phone for it's era and never gave me any problems. I don't want to spend $199 for a phone at this time, the $99 for the LTE is in my price range.
Thanks for the suggestion, let us know how you like the Optimus if you get it.
If you want the evo is 99cent look for the tread that has the link.

I clicked on the link and it came up with: Access denied:
"You may be trying to access a private offer or shopping area on sprint.com. Please confirm that the link you entered is correct."
I'll look for a thread you mentioned, thanks!

I placed the order using your link. It went through as I am a long time customer. The only odd thing was after placing the order it gave me a confirmation number which I used to check on "my order". The page that came up said, "This order must be manually processed" so I'm not sure what that means.
Do you know if anyone using that link has received their phone yet? People were placing orders around 10 days ago, they should have received their phones by now. Another person on the other forum wrote that he got the "Order must be processed manually" also, he hasn't posted again saying if his phone was shipped and was delivered.
thanks!
I haven't looked, but wasn't that special for black Friday? Or cyber Monday?

On the Private Store page it didn't say anything about Black Friday or it being Cyber Monday or anything special. I messed up because the discounts they give you end up with a $49 credit you can spend as you make the order. I didn't notice this until after making my order and then went back to read other posts on the other forum and a few people talked about using the $49 credit to order accessories.
Oh well, if I get the phone for almost nothing I'll get over not spending the credit.
best,
DC
The manual thing is common for the Sprint private store. I got the evo on white for my wife it took like 4 days after the order was placed. I think it took a while because I ordered on Saturday night. She loves it. I score big points thanks to that website. She thinks I bought it at 200 bucks. I (it was free) just don't tell her.

Came from the OG EVO to the LTE recently and I love it. No complaints here

Don't get the EVO LTE over the GS3. If and when you get LTE in your area, you will regret it.
Stick with the OG. Coworker is doing it and does just fine. Getting the ELTE is really just about ICS improvements and to be honest, there isn't that much if you happen to use custom ROMs on the OG. Plus, he gets WiMax where I'm stuck on 3G LOL (depends on your service area of course, but we have a WiMax tower across the street). I actually still use my OG at home with SWAG on it. Works great.
IF LTE is not going to be available before your next contract (2 years if you buy evo lte), then I would upgrade to the EVO LTE.
My main gripe is the LTE connection issues.... it's incredibly frustrating knowing there is 5-15 Mbit data speeds available... but to get them you really have to fight with the phone's software to access the LTE at times.

We never got 4G service in my area of Arizona. Sprint doesn't even list us on future areas for LTE service. Strange, we're a metropolitan area of over 1 million and never even got 4G. :crying:
It's safe to say there will not be LTE service in the next two years so the EvoLTE will be a good upgrade for me on 3G only.
thanks!
