I want to know if anyone else is having this strangeness before I call VZW;
Without moving an inch my signal goes from 2 bars of 4G to 2 bars of 3G and then back again. I set the phone down and wait a couple minutes and it jumps to 4G again. Very sporadic.
When I run Speedtest sitting at my desk showing 4G I get 6.5MB down and 25+ Up. Then, 3 seconds later when it jumps to 3G I am getting less than 1mb down and 500k up.
I have powered down, pulled the battery and held power button, the powered back on. (Several Times) Same results.
So far it's only inside my building so it could very well be environment related. I just want to toss it out there and see if I am the only one.
Thanks!

LoL, I feel your pain. It's the building you're in. I was thinking the same thing. As soon as I step outside, it's 4G central. You're not going crazy or anything.
When I'm on the edge of 4G coverage, mine does the same thing.
So far, when I'm at work is when I have that problem. It's quite annoying actually. Every other building seems to be fine outside of where I work.

You ain't lying! I was like WTH! I honestly thought I broke the thing until I started walking out of the building. Kinda sad that it doesn't really work indoors at work. Like you said, time to get a new job... not yet, I like what I do lol!
When I'm in an edge of 4G area I notice it doing the same thing, it has having a hard time deciding what to do. Rebooting or putting in airplane/taking airplane off seems to fix it
Thanks folks! Glad to know it isn't just me. I did notice it happened when I was at the gym too. But in the car, truck or outside... Epic Awesomeness!
Always good to know I am not crazy, or at very lest not alone in my insanity.

Same thing happened to me yesterday, although slightly more weird.
I was happily tethering away at the office on a nice strong, fast 4G signal for a few hours, then all of a sudden data dropped out completely. Restart the phone and it only shows 1TTX, but eventually flickers up to 3G, but won't go back to 4G despite numerous reboots. Eventually it settled back down to 4G and all was well.
I guess it was some kind of tower problem, as my location doesn't appear to be anywhere near a non-4G area (see map below). The area my office is in (near the 405 fwy and Van Nuys Airport) has excellent maximum speed coverages by AT&T and even T-Mobile; it would be shocking to me to learn that VZW in the same area isn't full 4G (it's not as map shows).
Hopefully this was just a fluke, but it has me nervous and I'll be keeping an eye on the performance during my 30 day test period.

This is very similiar to what happened to me last night at a restaurant around 8:30pm in Tustin CA. Had one or two bars of signal, was streaming YouTube fine, data connectivity cut out even though signal was same, cycled through airplane mode, after a short period it came back at 1x then eventually back to LTE. I thought the LTE equipment bounced at that tower but it now sounds like it happened on a wider scale.
I guess it helps to post the following info to help correlate:
Occurrence: 1
Date and time: Fri 3/19/2011 ~8:30pm pacific time
ROM: 1.12.605.9 non-rooted
Same here. I'm still trying to figure out the battery life hand over from 3G to 4G and back. It does NOT appear to be graceful.
I too have had to revert to airplane mode to get 4G back up. What end up happening too is that 4G will be listed, but push notification stalls badly even though it seems like a solid signal.
Last night I turned off 4G the entire night and push was working fine in the morning, nearly instantaneous.
This morning I turned off 3G and forced 4G and after 4 hours everything seems fine with no push notification latency. So perhaps the hand off on the phone is real bad between 3G and 4G.
I used phone info from the market to toggle 3G and 4G, [email protected]

I've had a couple of instances I suspect over the last three days, but only the one that mentioned above where I can be sure. For me it was:
Fri 3/19 ~2:00 PM Pacific
stock rom unrooted at the time.
I would expect that to go away as they expand coverage, remember that this network is still being rapidly expanded.

Its 30 days for a defective exchange but 14 days to exchange or return the phone completely FYI
Here is a thing I have noticed and a friend got me thinking
If you pick up a call on 4G and travel into a non 4G area... your call will drop. Its weird because no one said this phone could support LTE voice.
But if you pick up a call on 3G and travel into a 4G area everything is fine, just be stuck on 3G until you end the call. Same goes for data, I tested this out with pandora and stays stuck on 3G until i stop.
The manager at the corporate store told me they were not having any problems with signal hand off's but I think he was lying or didn't know. I work as an agent at the edge of a 4G boarder and get tons of returns or questions about the service on the 4G air cards for people who live in the area or near the boarder.
Signal just drops before it decides what its going to try next, super annoying
Mine was switching all over the place and then would completely shut off with no data connection. I kept getting a retry. Finally I took the cover off and just put it back on and now it seems to be working fine. I guess the antenna was not connecting properly.?
you guys should try an evo on Sprint 4g and laugh at the wimax coverage.

Question for people who switched from Evo 4G to Evo 3D.
Is anyone else noticing markedly weaker phone/3G signal strength as compared to their old 4G?
Mine is showing next to no signal in placed that my 4G showed full bars, and it pops in and out of roaming in places where I previously had decent Sprint signal.

I am having horrible reception problems. I have to sit on a window sill to get reception at my apartment where my Evo 4g got atleast one bar. Driving on a major highway here in Rochester NY, l watched my phone have one or no bars all the way into downtown. Roaming has been turning on and off.
Went to Sprint Store and the Rf tested my phone and said everything was fine, but my phone still seems to bounce around signal strength wise and usually ends up with one bar or less in areas where I have never had reception problems before.
As for 3G, it was running really, really slow until I called sprint and did a factory reset which has seemed to fix the problem. I'll know later if it fixed the signal strenth problem as well.
Sprint store and RF test just dont sound like they go togehter.
Definately sounds like your device is having some issues with CDMA.
Has anyone else had frequently dropped calls even when you have 3 or more bars of service? Also, my wife says that she often hears an echo or a "digital " static while talking to me. I have made many calls from all the same places with my old iPhone with no trouble.
I am loving this phone in every other way, but this is still a phone after all
I would hate to have to go back to an iPhone!
I am having the same issues. The static only seems to happen while using a bluetooth headset. I've only had dropped calls happen in my local area. Since this is where I use the phone the most, it's an obvious problem. I tested this with my Captivate and no dropped call. I am returning my SGS2 for a new one. The store was thinking it might have an antenna problem. I did notice that side by side against my Cap the SGS2 was getting much better reception. Standing still the Cap had a signal of -95, the SGS2 had -77. This is a very big difference. So I really don't think it's an antenna problem but I'm willing to try it rather than give up on it. If this doesn't work I'll return it and wait until new modems start hitting the forum.
Possible fix for dropped calls
Update to yesterdays post. I did return my SGS2 and received a new phone and sim card. There was one area in particular where my ability to make a phone call was near impossible. My Capitivate had no trouble here so I was annoyed. The new phone had some improvement but still not great. Later in the day on the way to bringing my son to Best Buy the phone was back to terrible. If I had had my box and receipt with me, I would've returned it right there. I told the cellular manager about my call issue. She told me to turn off 4G if possible. I don't have a toggle for 4G/3G so I just turned off the data. That solved my problem! I called someone to stay on the phone while driving through the effected area. There was a small span of about 30 seconds where he said my call was getting garbled but the call didn't drop. Before turning off the data it would have dropped numerous times by then.
If you're having call trouble, it's worth a shot.
Just picked up a new HTC Titan at the AT&T store on Thursday -- now unlocked and using it on the T-Mobile USA network. The phone is a fair amount larger than my previous device (LG Optimus 7), but I have to say....I'm really liking this phone....
...except for one thing: this phone is dropping calls like crazy.
Honestly, it appears to be a "death grip" sort of issue. I'm in the same areas, talking to the same people, and mostly not walking around. I'll be talking to someone (even when I'm standing still) and all of a sudden I'm just talking to myself. The bars are usually "high" -- like 4 or 5 bars -- but the call drops without warning. I've dropped 5 calls within the past two days, and I typically have NO DROPPED CALLS during a normal week. Something is wrong.
I've also used the phone a fair amount with my bluetooth headset, but it's never dropped a call when I'm using that.
Is it the back cover? Do I need to bend some contacts in the phone somewhere? Do I just need to swap it out at the store??
Help!

If it's when being held then... It's probably a bad back cover or contacts. Give htc a call and see if they'll replace it or swap it at the store.
You could mess with the contacts but then you might brake them if you lift it to far or mess with it too much.
The contacts at the bottom are the Cellular ones unless I'm wrong, but then again the FCC requires all Cell Antennas be away from the head so bottom being most likely with Wifi up top
Thanks, Tachi. I guess I'll contact the AT&T Store first, since it's less than one week old. I'll see what they have to say...
It's interesting that some users have reported "low signal", but not so much "dropped calls" like what I've seen. Actually, I've witnessed low signal locations as well -- and even worse at my house than my previous phone -- but these "dropped call" scenarios have been in high bar locations mostly. DEFINITELY seems like a hardware issue.
Can't remember the last time I had a dropped call in the last decade on Sprint. I've had 3 since December with my Titan. All have happened inside my 100 year old brick home. Fortunately, they were all just random, meaningless calls. Any thoughts on building penetration...AT&T vs. Sprint? ...or is the phone the primary suspect? I have previously owned a Mogul, TP, TP2, EVO, and Arrive with no issues. The Titan does average 3 bars where the others always averaged 4.
Hey everyone, I live in the US and bought a Z2 on eBay from never-msrp on eBay, his service was great and the phone has no outside physical defects.
However, I have very very bad signal. I live in a place that only gets 1 or 2 signal bars on occasion (just 2G, sometimes 3G) and if I don't get signal in the house I can put the phone next to a window and get a pretty solid signal. This is not the case with the Z2. I get no signal at the house and when I put the phone up to the window I will only get 1 bar of 2G every so often, perhaps like 5 minutes of signal out of 40 minutes sitting near the window. Does this phone just have naturally weak signal? I noticed that when I go up the road to try and obtain better signal, it is very slow to pick up signal and once in a supposedly stable zone where I can get 3G, it will not be very stable. For the most part, I get 3G but I noticed that the signal went out completely a couple of times.
Does this sound like a defective device? I've already contacted the seller and he accepts returns though I have to pay a ridiculous restocking fee probably.
