[Q] Filed a warranty claim to Sears. Need help/advice - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just called Sears and filed a warranty claim under their "Purchase Protect Plan". The associate sent me the return label to send it and told me that once I file(d) the claim I could not claim again. He said my claim would either be approved or revoked after they inspect my tablet. The reason why I filled a claim is because of the lack of support for it. Too many of my purchased apps aren't getting any more updates because of incompatibility and the usual freeze and reboot or the rare bootloop have costed me too much time already. Also I use it at school as a PDF viewer to view my free books, but it ticks me whenever it freezes and reboots in the middle of class.
Questions:
Would putting it in a bootloop and removing clockwork work into fooling Sears? How should I damage it without physically damaging it?
Anyone have any experience with returns/warranty that can tell me what to do?
I got this tablet for $379.99 back when it came out. I am getting that plus taxes if it goes through. My next choice of tablet is the Asus Transfrormer which cost the same as when I bought my tablet. Is that a good choice?
Thanks for any replies!

This may not be the best place to solicit advice on committing fraud. No judgement here, but it's probably against the forum rules.

I am not really committing fraud. There are several problems with my tablet besides the software. For instance my capacitive buttons tend to stick, wifi doesn't always work, and screen looses touch sensitivity on rare and random occasions(not freezes because the capacitive buttons still work when it happens and I usually have to bang the tablet on the side to get it to work again). On top of this my recharge cable is really worn and ripping apart. I am just getting tired of having to have to struggle with the device sometimes especially with my busy schedule at school. You do not know how much it sucks when your professor ask the class to turn to page x and then as you are turning your tablet suddenly freezes and reboots. Then to kill it even more he calls on you to answer something from that page.
Well I can't ship it yet till tomorrow. I still need my tablet for doing hw at school.
EDIT: Did I also not mention how I got this tablet last year? Its getting old.

are you running a custom ROM? Im betting that Sears wont provide you any hepl or support unless the tablet is completely stock.
the problem with the power cable probably wont be covered either, they like to call that physical damage caused by improper use or some such.
Ive worked for several aftermarket warranty companies...
Theyre probably going to pin it on software, I doubt they are going to support any of these issues, except maybe the touchscreen issue.
What ROM are you running?

necromonger89,
We'd like to speak with you directly regarding your tablet. Please email [email protected] with your contact information.
Thank you,

[Q] RMA experience

I have an Archos 101 16 ordered on the online store back in November. It has what I perceive to be a hardware problem. Occasionally the back button will 'stick'. Of course while this is happening the device is unusable.
I'm always happy to entertain a fix without mailing it back to them, but I doubt that will be the case (if anyone else feels differently I'd love to hear their thoughts). Is dealing with Archos as painful as dealing with some of our other favorite hi-tech companies?
If they are utterly painful to deal with I will just live with the occasional problem and adjust my opinion of the company and usage habits of the device accordingly. If possible it would be nice to know what I'm getting into before I make that first call.
Thank you.
I had to return an A70 a while back. When I first called, she asked almost nothing, then gave me an RMA number. When I did a followup call later the dude was a real jerk - so much so that I called back & complained to his manager. I guess it just depends on who you get.
They sent out my replacemet unit within a couple of days of their recieving it, so overall it was o.k.

Phone not sliding properly

While this isn't a strictly dev related question, this is the best x10mp forum online, so I'm asking here
My phone is about 3 months old, and today, suddenly, my phone started to have a problem when sliding open and closed. It feels as though there is a lot of extra friction happening somewhere with the slide mechanism. This happens when both opening and closing.
Has anyone had a similar experience with their phone, or have any idea how to fix it?
I assume Sony has a one year or so hardware warranty. I'll give them a call and see what they say about it.
Thanks for any suggestions!
i dnt have any problem bt with my other frends like around all 4 of the same phones like mine have the problems its like all four fnes were different they didn feel the same some felt light sum felt heavy bt yeah i suggest u call se
maybe that's a factory defect? although I'm not sure. But yea, just go see SE you got warranty
mm. apparently their customer service in taiwan isn't so great. all you can do is leave a number and they say theyll get back to you. ill keep this thread updated in case anyone is interested.
do walk-in
the service center address isnt listed on their website. anyone know the service center address in taipei?
It's under warranty, so back up everything (apps, settings etc) to your SD card, and try to convince them to swap it in store, or they may take a looong time to fix.
http://www.cpkb.org/wiki/Sony_Ericsson_U20_Xperia_X10_Mini_Pro_service_manual
This might help if you want to pull it apart yourself - I've pulled mine down to replace a screen, and it was great fun, though scary at first. Just watch the little ribbon cable clamps - make sure you release them (hard to see) before you go pulling cables out.
It's such an impressive bit of harware all squeezed in like that. I hate those monster 4" smartphones - this thing is clever.

thanks for the link. ill take my phone to the service center. i actually got through to someone on the chinese menu of the service center hotline. it only took me 10 minutes for them to give me the address of the place! haha

[Q] Sad Day. My Prime stopped working! :( Anyone Else?

So I had been enjoying my GameStop preordered prime all day yesterday and half of today. This afternoon I go to turn it on and nothing. No display whatsoever.
It appears to be a display issue as I can plug in the USB cable to my computer and it will mount the storage. I tried using the reset button on the side and nothing. Held down the power button for about 10 seconds and the unit buzzes, the storage is temporarily dismounted, and then it remounts, but no screen.
Not only am I bummed, my wife who bought it for me as a birthday/Christmas present feels bad because she knows how much I was looking forward to it.
Anyone else having any troubles with their units? Anyone have any suggestions? I haven't tried a hard reset yet, but I'm very doubtful it will work.

Wow. That sucks. Sorry to hear that. I had an oh **** moment earlier today, I hooked my prime up to my desktop for the first time to move a movie, and the USB plug sparked going into my motherboard and my comp rebooted. And the other end was attached to my prime. This happened to coincide with moving a file over wifi to NAND which brings the prime to a halt. So I thought I had toasted the thing.

Follow Up-Called Asus Tech Support
So I called Asus tech support and as disappointed as I am, the support call was at decent experience. I was told it would take 10-14 business days for the techs to take a look at it. Of course, I have to foot the bill to get it there, but that is fairly common nowadays. The phone operator was decent enough to expedite my RMA though as he could hear the disappointment in my voice. With an expedite, he said that as soon as it is received in shipping, it will be looked at immediately.
Also, not that this is a surprise to anyone at this point, and as I write this, I guess I'm sort of glad this happened. I was definitely noticing wi-fi issues. As I mentioned in my first post, I had a GameStop pre-order and therefore I likely had one of the units with the wi-fi problem. I thankfully remembered to mention the wi-fi issues in the RMA call, so they will be looking at that as well.
I also mentioned to the operator that since I had ordered this through GameStop, there were some preloaded games that GameStop had put on the unit. He said that he would make a note telling the techs to call if they needed to wipe the system for any reason, otherwise they would send it back with everything intact.
Has anyone found out how we can backup or restore the GameStop bundle if we do need to do a wipe? How about updates for those preinstalled games? I didn't get a chance to see if they were being recognized by the Android Market.
Don't know if this might help but check to see if your volume button is stuck in the up position. The buzzing you get and remount sounds like the prime is going into APX mode. I was able to get into APX mode with my prime by holding the VOL up and restart the prime. I get the same thing as you but I'm able to just hold the power button and it reboots normally

I agree! Why wouldn't you ask for a NEW one??! I wouldn't tolerate getting it "fixed"
Guys, educate me here.
Isn't easier to get a replacement from Best Buy, Amazon, etc?
Why calling Asus after just few days buying it?
If it happens to me I will be heading to the store where I bought it for an exchange or refund.
I could not sleep knowing I paid for a brand new unit that has to be opened and repaired. Just sayin...
Mines shut down for no reason as well. It was unresponsive for a while and I finally got it started after pressing power and the volume up button. Then a few hours later it shut down again, for no reason. Erg is going on

sold my prime today on CL for what I paid for it. keeping the $99 HP touch pad I bought just to hold me over, turns out to be alot better IMO. snappy CPU, powerful gpu andreno 250.
it currently has more game support aswell and runs them well. also has a great community on xda.
I would not accept anything less than a replacement. Amazon is replacing mine for some pixel/backlight problems.

Yes it may have all that you mentioned but it won't have ICE CREAM!
ICE CREAM!!!! ICE CREAM!!! The ice cream man is coming!!!
I've got some ice cream, I've got some ice cream. You didn't get none, you didn't get none, cause your tablets on welfare, your tablets on welfare. You can't afford it, you can't afford it. You want some? Psych!!! (Immortal words of --- Eddie Murphy)
RE: Sad Day.
Believe you me, I'm just about to head to bed and I'm waking up tomorrow morning without the ability to take video of my kids opening presents as I had planned with the Prime. Granted I have other means of doing so, but I was excited to do so on the tablet and I've been chomping at the bit for this unit since I first heard about it.
I'm VERY disappointed that I'm out the tablet after only 1 1/2 days. I'm soooo bummed! The reason I called Asus tech and started the RMA process was due to the fact that I figured I didn't have much of a choice. It's either have this unit fixed and wait 10-14 Business days, or get GameStop to order a replacement and wait 4-7 weeks. I did ask if I would still have the 1 year warranty and the operator said I would. (I asked because I know some companies say tough luck after the first repair. I would have been climbing the walls if Asus said tough luck!) I admit, I'm a bit of a "satisfaction now" kind of person-I simply figured that 10-14 Business days was my fastest option to having the tablet back in hand.
Unknown_owner, thanks for the tip. I'll check the volume button.
Skeptikal, Did GameStop give you any kind of ETA? Or were you simply willing to wait no matter how long it takes?
BiGMERF, I see it is working again as you sent your message from your Prime. Where did you get your tablet? Has it happened again?
Thanks all! At least there is some "therapy" in talking about the experience with XDA members
You just bought the thing. Now it doesn't work after a day. Don't mess around with RMA. Go to GameStop, return the unit, and either they can provide you an exchange right then, or get a complete refund. If they hassle you, file a dispute with your credit card provider. Then go buy from some place else.
Better yet, let your wife do the returns. Women are just naturally better at getting their way. Bonus points if she's the in-your-face type. Be sure to get the manager of the store to join the party.
Remember: It's your Xmas present. You're not going to let anybody ruin your Xmas. Attitude counts. And lots of spittle.
Sorry to hear. Have a good Xmas! My prime has no issues yet so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

No, sorry. I didn't even get into that with them on the phone. I am banking on software fixing the GPS issue. If not I will explore the possibilities then. Really sorry yours isn't working as it should. I hope it gets worked out quickly in your favor!

That really bites I'd be so pissed! I would demand a new one not just a fix. Mine takes a while to boot with some screen flickers in the process. I better not have the same issue coming on. What a way to ruin your mas. I'm so sorry. But being only two days I'd get a new one not a fix. After a month yeah a fix would be warranted but not two days.
Dead Prime
Yup, mine's dead as well. I got it today, used it for a couple of hours and went out, leaving it to charge. Got home, restarted at 100% battery and now it's dead. Thanks ASUS, real glad I took and chance on your tablet! Very impressed...
The best way to see if your Prime is dead (speaking to everyone with this problem) is holding just the power button down for at least 20 seconds. And also, plug it in. If you have an orange or a green light, that is a good thing.

The sad truth..

This is, without doubt, the most failed product I've ever bought. I have bought many unnecessary and failed products, and painfully regretted them all, but none as much as the Prime. I bought it because all the hype around it lead me to believe it would be a good tablet. How deceived I was. Poor wifi connection, no working gps without external dongle, slowdown to almost freeze when installing something from Google Play, etc.
Many times have I wanted to throw it in a brick wall, but it cost 750 dollars and it would pain me even more to lose all that instantly. I can't sell it because no one wants it now when the bootloader's unlocked (meaning no support etc, from already useless Asus) and I don't live in the US so I can't ebay it. I should have just waited until the 32GB 3G Nexus 7, or a Nexus 10, but instead I foolishly bought this sad piece of metal. I have to admit I found a lot more usability in it after upgrading to JB and I was ecstatic for a moment, well, until I installed an app from the Play Store..
So that's it, basically. I'm stuck with a pathetic piece of metal and it's no value in selling it and not worth the energy. I smacked Hairy Bean in it but it's just polishing a turd, really..

You are using hb1.51 with a clemsyn overclocked kernel and still have play store lag?
agreed. Owell, you live and you learn, screw asus.
Yes, I have lag everywhere. When browsing Play, when installing apps, etc. The ONLY reason (read: ONLY) I'm keeping this disgraceful excuse of a tablet is because it would pain me even more to lose all that money.

I am only asking based on an honest interest in the problem. There should be no lag in any of those areas using the rom kernel combination I mentioned earlier. Your post otherwise should have come at the end of one of the many complaint threads.

And... what exactly do you expect to accomplish by complaining about it here? Should we all pass the hat so that we can fund a replacement for you?
With all of its warts, why on earth didn't you return it when you had the chance? All of your gripes are problems that you should have seen from the start. Why did you hang on to it? Did you think it'd get better.
Look, Asus has horrible post-sale support. For that reason alone, I'll never buy another Asus product.
Pretty sure you can still sell it. Part out the dock and you might get $250-300 for both. Which would put you almost $100 within a Nexus10.
Seeing these woot offs and deals for this tablet fly at $200-250 means a lot of people understand the value of a $200 10" tablet. Most of them are probably like me looking to unlock and load up a different ROM anyway. Give it a shot on ebay or CList and get something you really want.
Androwook 1.51 absolutely flies with this thing on mine, sorry to hear you have issues. Got a 32GB preowned one for $200 few weeks ago and besides the wifi drain it's what I expected out of $200. Definitely not $500+ tablet though

I only have the tab and not the dock. Who the hell wants it now? I tried selling it but since the b/l is unlocked not a single soul was interested. That, or the fact that the prime is goddamn useless.

I feel your pain. Here's my story to add to the mix:
My daughter got a TF201 for Christmas last year.. but it didn't arrive until sometime in January 2012 due to availability. We've had a long, hard journey with Asus over the past 11 months and it has apparently come to the point where Asus is saying it is what it is and I'm saying it's a defective product.
Apparently, my only recourse is to take Asus to small claims court.. and I have no idea if that would be productive or not.
The original TF201 with keyboard was received in Jan. 2012... it was updated to ICS and the audio quit working. No sound, no mic, no nothing. Dear Daughter doesn't want to give up her new device so it takes a month or so before she'll save everything and let me return it for repair. Also, at some point we realize the GPS is not working so we get the dongle (which never worked or fixed the GPS problem).
The repair takes care of the audio problem (new motherboard). However, less than 90 days later we get the rear camera green line issue. Again, DD doesn't want to let it go right away, but eventually saves her stuff and off it goes. The camera issue is resolved and we get it back in a reasonable time frame.. 2 or 3 weeks.
Less than 90 days later, the rear camera craps out again. This time I tell Asus it's time to pony up to the plate and just get us a new unit off the line, and not some refurb. We send in the original unit and this time get back a different unit... a refurb.
Right off the bat, it randomly reboots and does weird stuff. Plus, the wifi range is much shorter than the original unit. Asus has us do a factory data reset (which takes time since DD has again loaded her pics and music... so it has to be saved off again). Eventually, we do the FDR and the reboots dramatically improve, but are not completely eliminated. However, wifi range still sucks and of course, the GPS doesn't work.
Now Asus tells us the wifi and GPS fix is to use the dongle (which we can't even find now). But you can't use the dongle when the keyboard is docked... which is how the TF201 is used 99% of the time. So how it that a fix? And I'm being told by Asus CS that the reboot may be when the device needs to update itself. Really? Without asking first? I don't think so.
Asus refuses to step up to the plate and do the right thing. Personally? I'm done with Asus. I've been buying their motherboards, media drives, and laptops for years. But they have found a way to royally pi$$ off a (former) loyal customer.
I'm considering my options at this point.
I hope you guys have better luck with your Asus devices than we have had. DD wishes now she'd gone with the iPad instead. I have to agree.
This story (like all the others before) has touched my heart and I fully sympathize. I am so inconceivably sorry you bought this tablet. I wish there was something I could personally do for you. If there's anything, and I mean anything I can do to ease your pain, please just say.

Ah David. You are too kind. No, really.
If I possessed the slightest knowledge and interest of messing with the insides of electrical hardware, I would open this tab and de-solder the nand chip and solder on a fully working one that would play nicely with the rest of the internals, and I would change the metal backing for a better one that doesn't kill off the wifi and gps signals.
But, it would probably be more worth it to buy a nexus 7 3GB 3G (although, made by ASUS :/), but there's one slight issue. Money.
At least your Prime could be unlocked. I might be stuck with lack of root forever.
..
I dont know I still love my prime+dock. It does all i need it to. Yeah there is the occasional stutter when i update an app - but this is certainly not the end of the world for me^^ The screen is awesome and there is nothing better for pdf viewing/annotation and note taking at university... Still makes every ipad/laptop user jaelous.
SD card takes all the series/movies it needs to and battery life is very good. Since JB i'm fully satisfied with what i expect from a tablet. Still got my root without that it would look different i guess. Of course this is a personal view but for me - this tablet is completely fine and worth the money i spent on it.
We got enough whining threads...

I'm not sure if this is even allowed here but, I can't use the phone for phone calls AND 1 other "over the air service" such as GPS or WIFI hotspot or even wifi - if I do the calls get broken up with the poor audio routing of the blue tooth adapter--it's almost like the phone doesn't have enough resources to run cell phone call AND GPS or cell phone call AND blue tooth music or cell phone call AND wifi/hotspot service....any eon one service used at one time works flawlessly but with a cell phone you want to use ALL the wireless services at once and have them work.
AND, the phone shuts itself off when it's in my pocket and charge to 95-100%?? I miss phone calls from work all the time, I am constantly checking the phone to make sure it is still turn on. What a pain the behind.
I call Google - so sorry it's Huawei's problem, I call Huawei - so sorry its Googles problem. In the meantime I bought this phone from google and it worked well for 1.5(purchased 06-16-2016) years (besides the shutdown issue) then poof gone - it is now a piece of crap - 3 months outside of the one year warranty and I need a new phone!
So, my question to these two companies ( and I know they have lurkers in these forums all the time - that's why I am posting this here after speaking with BOTH of them) is: How in all honesty can you expect me and every single person I talk to about this to ever purchase another phone from either one of you?
Because I do talk, to everyone who will listen, about this; I see a LOT of people everyday, different jobs sites all over eastern Ontario. I tell them that as a technician for the past 30 years and knowing how technology works and also knowing that BOTH of these companies are probably to blame each in their own way and that NEITHER of these companies are thinking about their customers on this issue and only about their own bottom line I couldn't possibly recommend either one of them for anything.
Without exception these people I meet ask me which brand they think I SHOULD buy. I tell them this: "If you want a phone that just works and you aren't a customizer get an iPhone. If you are a customizer get a Razer Phone, an LG if you want cheap or a Samsung, Samsung being my preferred choice - but whatever you do, DO NOT buy a google phone or any phone made by Huawei because BOTH of these companies have proven to not be trust worthy, over this debacle, to their customers and if this is the case now then why would you think any future incidents of this nature would be any different?
Good bye to Google and Huawei, hello to Samsung again.
Thanks for letting me rant/rage here.
I have to say, I'm also disappointed on my nexus 6p. One day it just went nuts, shutdown itself and then bam! bootloop occurred and from that day on I can't install roms including stock, yes including stock, without applying a 4-core mod (forces my device to use only 4-cores to work and boot). Some say it's a hardware failure or something, idk. And even before that i have been having issues with my battery, i only get 4h sot average. I cant believe i spent so much for this crap. Dont get me wrong though, i love this camera very much and the stock google experience (and custom roms) but everything else is sh*t. So yeah, +1 for this "dissatisfaction"

Well I have no idea what carrier you use but if I was you I'd "accidentally drop" or "lose" my phone and file an insurance claim- I know Verizon told me if I end up breaking or losing my 6p they would either give me a Pixel 2 or 2XL so maybe that's something to look into?

Personal experience is the complete opposite. Phone was nearly 2 years old (1 year warranty in the UK) and started shutting down. Online chat with Google and confirmed I had done the basic fault fixes like factory reset and they immediately send out a refurb to replace it.
They had no legal requirement to do so but also did this for a lot of people who bought their phone through the play store. Its more complex if it was bought through a carrier as the warranty / contract is then with the carrier or Huawei and those experiences appear to be less straight forward.
Everyone has different experiences, I wouldn't touch Samsung with a barge pole due to personal problems I had with them and the number of faults our organisation has with their phones. Had an LG phone that had the reboot issue and they wouldn't do anything as it was outside of the 12 month warranty.
Warranties have an end date that you sign up to, they may give a goodwill gesture outside of this, or you can fight them to say the fault was inherent.
What have you done to diagnose the issue on your phone?
It could be as simple as the battery needs replacing. It can have all sorts of symptoms including shutting down or failing services when there is high demand and a power spike which the dying battery can't provide. Have you run something like Accubattery to check the battery state?

I'm in the UK. I bought mine from Playstore but the warranty card states the handset had a 2 year warranty?
I agree with you on LG though. I bought two LG G4's. One had the well documented bootloop within warranty and they repaired it. The second started to bootloop two weeks out of warranty...LG didn't want to know.

Had the same issue. The phone was practically useless for calls due to its secondary mic issue. The battery aged really well for me, though
When I contacted Google - they were pretty responsive. I really appreciate Google for this. After a year they had no obligation to even entertain me. But that's about it - they gave me standard replies like factory reset - to which I laughed. Rooting and disabling the secondary mic would have probably solved the issue but then the payment options would'nt have worked for me. Google had acknowledged the mic and the battery issue in North America but here in India they went the factory reset route. I shared the bug id as well. Nothing helped. They asked me to visit the Huawei service center. They changed mic - issue still persisted - asked me to contact Google.
I eventually got myself a Samsung N8. Had been with Google for 3 generations. The Pixel 2 XL couldn't convince me this time. Customer lost.
