Easier Root with no flash - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Not sure if everyone has seen this but it appears there is a new method to root our devices without requiring us to flash. New exploit has already been incorporated into SuperOneClick. I haven't tried yet but will be soon. Anyone else see / use this and can verify?

I haven't used the SuperOneClick method, but I used this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
which seems to be based off the same ZergRush method & it worked perfectly.

Correct. The developer of SuperOneClick simply incorporated the ZergRush method.
I just bit the bullet and successfully rooted by SG2 this morning with SuperOneClick. Thus this is a quick and easy method to root instead of flashing. No knock against any of the developers here as they all should be commended for identifying how to root our SG2s months ago. For me I am not ready to flash my SG2 as I just got it and really want to play with it a while stock to learn the ins and outs and then identify the best rom that I think has the features that I feel are lacking.
However again, this is now a quick and easy method for all with just one button click to gain root.

I really see no point in rooting at all unless you want to use stock firmware.
All custom roms are pre-rooted so if you are going to flash a custom
rom there really is no need to root the phone in the first place.
Once you have the CWM Recovery Kernel flashed, simply flash the
custom rom of your choice (zipfile) and you will have instant root.

Root enables many Root apps such as TiBu and allows making system changes. Not everyone want a custom rom.

[Q] No way to root the SII without increasing the flash counter ?

Hello everyone,
I read a lot of threads but I didn't find any tutorial in here that explains how to root the S2 without increasing the flash counter.. Well I found one but it was concerning the AT&T version. I guess if you can do it on the AT&T version there must be a way to do on the international version but I didn't find anything...
I don't wanna take any risks with the warranty and I heard the usb thingy doesn't work on the latest firmwares.
So is there any way at the moment to root the international S2 without changing the flash counter ?
Thanks a lot !
You can always just downgrade the bootloader and the USB Jig will work.
I updated to the latest fw with new bootloader, i then flashed the old bootloader back onto phone and then reset counter with usb jig. The old bootloader can be found on the site, just can't remember where at the minute

You could root with zergrush for a basic root. Then if you want custom kernels without starting the counter you could install the first one by using dd to install a zImage that includes CWM. After that only upgrade from CWM and you will never start the counter.
Hey thanks for your replies.
I read so many threads and never heard about zergrush. I think a lot of people just want the easiest way to root their phone without voiding the warranty period. No custom roms, no clockworkmod thingy and so on. I really wonder why complicated methods are sticked when an easy and probably safer one exists. So here is the method :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
I still have a question left, why do we have to install su and busy box ?
Thanks.

Thanks ! I knew what rooting meant but I thought all you needed to do is to be able to change a specific setting in the deep body of android .
I guess busybox is needed for su to work right ?

No, other way around. Busybox will need root. But busybox is VERY useful; if you are a linux user, it provides many higher level linux commands not otherwise available in android.

[Q] Latest, Greatest root method for Galaxy II?

Ok so I'm a total noob to the Galaxy II and I'm wondering what's the best latest method (manual or auto) to root these phones and what precautions should I take, or any other steps you recommend. I've rooted several HTC's but haven't been following the Samsung world so any links and pointers are much appreciated!
Thanx,
SB
CF Root is the most popular method.

Or,the ZergRush Exploit...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319653
Precautions; There are many, but important to backup you're EFS folder. This is where you're IMEI is stored, and has a small potential for corruption during flashing process of firmware.
There are a few methods of EFS backup around, Hellcat app for one. You will need root first, and give Superuser permission when requested.
Have a dig around the forum, but suggest to do this before flashing custom ROMs.
Also, take note of your product number, so you know what original firmware to download and flash if you have to return for warranty. There is a code to dial to get it, can't quite remember, just google for it. If not, use the CWM recovery to make a nan-backup of you're system first. Edit: Should be on the box though.
Hope I've helped

[Q] Rooting and build number

I just turned my phone on for the first time. I am planning to root it as soon as I complete all my tests to see that there is no malfunction that needs the use of waranty so root will take place in 3-5 days.
In the meantime I see that I have Android 4.0.4, build IMM76D.I9300XXALE8 but there is an OTA update available. I'm wondering, if I install the update, will the rooting process be harder, i.e. will I need downgrade or is the rooting irrelevant to build number (At least with the Desire HD, you had to have specific build either you need to downgrade)
If you are using cf root, and I advise it, then all will be good.here's a link to it

You may loose your root if you get a OTA update but rooting again isn't hard.
you might not get any OTA update's if you are using CWM recovery... not sure about it.. somebody correct me if i'm wrong.

Thanks. I'll install the update now.
BTW, since you mention it, what's the main difference between the CF-Root 6.4 method that you advice and the TOOLKIT V4.0? I mean what makes CF-Root 6.4 better?

my, and other people's, observations on rooted problems, and 2 years of using chainfires' roots and products. I have seen a few problems lately relating to the tool kit, and simplicity. Takes about 2 minutes to do the cf, including download time!
CF Root is the old method that just works . The toolkit is more than CF Root .
Simplest for a new user to root with CF root as it takes seconds .

Are they equally safe? and will the toolkit also work even if I installed latest OTA update or will it need downgrade first?
Never had the need to use toolkit as its new .
OTA may not work on root .
OTA that does work will require reroot.

Do I need to be rooted to flash custom roms?

I heard that alot of roms are now prerooted. I do have the bootloader unlocked on 2.3.6. Do i still need to root, or could i just flash a custom JB rom such as the ones created by Th3Bill?
thanks appreciate the help
has root preloaded.
why would you not want root access? after unlocking, flashing recovery, and installing a custom system, why would you not want root? i'm sure you have a good reason, just curious.
one post? can't tell if serious
You have the BL Unlocked, so flash a ROM and most (if not all) come with root preinstalled already...

I know this isn't directed at me, but I was asking myself the same question this user did, because I need to hide the System Bar on a JB Tablet, and from what I found it is only possible with root.

[Q] No root access after unlocking bootloader

Hi, recently unlocked the bootloader of the my xperia s via the sony website. However when I installed root checker I was told my device doesn't have proper root access even though I do because I can access system files via astro. The same goes for the supersu which says the same thing. I've looked aorund the internet for a solution but simply cant find one either because there is none or I have no knowledge of how roms work if that is a solution?
Any help would be appreciated.
Wanted to add that I previously had a xperia s with a locked bootloader which I rooted but that came with superuser preinstalled and was confirmed rooted by root checker, so I have some experience rooting.
Cheers.
You certainly didn't read it thoroughly sir! Unlocking the bootloader doesn't root your phone. There are multiple ways of doing it, flash a rooted kernel or use binary's method. Check the dev section for these.

Thanks for the reply! I have one more question. Took your advice and downloaded KA Xperia SSpeed Kernel from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1761778 and downloaded the 1.5ghz cwm file. It comes with two folders which are both meta-inf and system and one file called zImage. This a really noobish question but what do I do with these? Do they somehow work with Flashtool and ICS firmware?
Thanks again.
