Just trying to decide the best.
I use Calkulin's. Super fast and like the overall feel and look.
The Vegan 7 Gingerbread Experimental is the best rom I've used. I added the tegra2 market fix (another thread). It doesn't score as well in Quadrant as Calkulin's ROM+Clemsyn's Kernel combo (1800ish vs 2200ish) but the performance is definitely acceptable. I've noticed slight jerking in some higher-resolution flash videos but not in those which seem to be more standard res. I don't play back much non-flash video, so I don't know the full effects of not having an Nvidia hardware accellerated driver. I didn't find any fault with Calkulin+Clemsyn, but in terms of out-of-box polish, Vegan 7 beats it hands down.
I'm very satisfied with the quality of the Vegan 7 Experimental ROM, it is superb. I love the default apps installed (especially the terminal!) and the ATL/launcher. I may try to make a custom version at some point with a Froyo kernel & accelerated driver for the ultimate experience.
The best
I've loaded many of the most popular roms and I would have to say that overall I think Calkulin's ROM+Clemsyn's Kernel combo is the fastest and cleanest one. Everything I use runs well and I have no complaints. That said, Vegan 5 and TNT Lite 4.4 also run very well but for me Calkulin is king.
VEGAns
I use VEGAn 5.1 and it was so fast that i decided never to switch ROM anymore... until yesterday when they came up with the new VEGAn Ginger edition, which is as fast or even faster. Not to mention the sweet new design
I switched to that, and again said i will never switch again
So i suggest go with VEGAn... u won't be disappointed
I have VeGAN Tab 5.1.1...better than the new Vegan Gingerbread update. No problems at all.
Hi guys,
This is basically just a thread about trying to find out what ROM everyone is using and what's most suitable for my new G-Tablet.
I understand the first thing I should do is install ClockworkMod, then install a ROM.
My other question is - is pershoot's kernel a major performance increase?
Also, just to clarify - VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition does not play movies very well, correct?
however, VEGAn-TAB BETA 5.1.1 does as it has supported hardware acceleration?
My main use will be web browsing and possibly movies.
Your feedback would be appreciated
I got my tablet last weekend, i have flashed Vegan Gingerbread Ed. and loaded pershoots OC kernel. I can still play video on YouTube, etc. with rockplayer lite. I would suggest thinking about Ginger ed since they are currently working on the hardware acceleration for Ginger ed, however who knows when it will be released. If you are going to watch movies right away, i would perhaps do 5.1.1.
My suggestion would be flash GB, get that working, see what you thing, and then flash back to 5.1.1 if you want the video. Reason i say this is it sounds like you need to do some extra steps (like partitioning your device) for GB, so if you can get that running, and then flash back to 5.1.1, when hardware acceleration comes out for GB edition you should be able to do a simple flash to get it loaded instead of having to partition etc.

any GB rom won't play HD movies very well, but plays dvd encodes, and even HD that's been divxed down to a smaller resolution fairly well, depending on the encode used.
The pershoot OC kernel makes a big difference in performance. About 40% faster when oc'ed to 1.4 Ghz.
I'd go with the VEGANginger, dump the latest pershoot kernel on it, and see if the software decoding performance is sufficient for you. If not then you can always drop back to a froyo rom.
At least that was my plan, and I never bothered to drop back to a froyo,,,
A ROM that has all the drivers for HW accelaration, etc. I don't care if it is a 2.2 or 2.3 ROM. (BL 1.2)
I have tried all the HC ROMS so far and while the devs are doing such a bang up job with the little resources available to them, HC ROMS still have issues i.e. playing videos from browsers, etc.
I am currently running the GTabcomb 3.3 and it is by far the best HC ROM I have tried but I simply cannot play ANY videos on browsers.
Thanks.

I can only recommend CyanogenMOD 7.0.3 Stable. Everything works..
I'm not sure if there is a 1.2BL Stable version floating around but I think there may be a nightlies thread in the Developers section.
The Current CM7 Stable does require a 1.1BL though.
Goodluck!

Version 6 of CalkClem Combo is on 1.2 and it's amazing. Overclocked to 1.5ghz and rock solid. It's been my daily driver for months now with no issues.

Beasty's is by far the best. Fastest rom out of the 5+ roms I've tried. Everything works except for popcap games
Thanks guys. Will be trying all those ROMS shortly.
Sorry to threadjack, but how would you compare gtabcomb to illuminate? Illuminate is claiming hw accelleration.
try using Opera as your browser to view videos. I am using the same rom (GTab comb 3.3)

illuminate -> by default: the youtube is a hit or miss. Some are working, some are not.
the flashback Rom -> so far youtube is working but no HW Acceleration. and the original angrybird is not playable. (i still cant catapult the bird eventhough the game can be started). angrybird rio is playable though.
So hopefully the next update of illuminate will fix the flash problem since the last few post from lbs seems mentioning about it *cross finger*
Quick comments: Whether its hw acceleration or not, but the current illumuniate rom is not as fast as the original Honeycomb tablet e.g. xoom, samsung.
So I just got one of these things (10.1) , and its SLOW compared to my G2x! (I'm blaming the launcher for one...)
What's up with that? They run the same Tegra 2 chip! I can't play videos back on my Tab but the same videos work fine on my G2x... I'm running MX Video Player on both devices, and my Tab wont let me do hardware decoding, while my G2x does hardware decoding on the same videos...
Is it because I'm running a custom rom on my G2x vs just a root and stock rom and pershot kernel on the Tab?
What's going on here? I would expect the Tab to be able to decode the same video as my G2x.

Anyone know how to get buttery smooth UI Performance on the Tab [especially with live wallpapers]? Are there any good alternative launchers for Honeycomb?

Can you change the dock/quick Icons on the menu bar? (task manager, calendar, world clock, pen memo, calculator, music player).
First, do you have the latest "official" update? If you are under 3.1, it's a joke even compared to 3.2...
Second, you can't realy compare stock to custom roms, if you like custom roms, try the Task rom, pretty good!

Yep! I'm running 3.2. I had to update at least twice for some strange reason... once to 3.2, and one smaller update afterwards.
Do custom roms make that much of a difference? Even when just comparing video decoding?
I'll check that rom out! Thanks!
Probably not worlds apart between ROMs when it comes to video decoding, UI responsiveness yes but video playback less so.
Personally i either play downloaded TV episodes encoded in xvid in less than 720p or I'll play my own rips encoded in 720p specifically for the tab so I have no complaints about playback. I do understand however, the frustration people have about not being able to throw any file you currently have our may download onto these tabs and be able to play it smoothly. Comparing the tab to your LG phone is fruitless though as just because both may share tegra 2 cpus doesn't mean implementation is the same.

It's because custom ROM's have specific kernel's that have governor's and I/o to set the phone straight. I would suggest clocking to 1.4GHZ and use pershoot's kernel.
I stand corrected. My impression has been that for the galaxy tab 10.1 there has basically been just two; stock and pershoot's. Then again, since i mainly only deal with my own model which has little or no developer support i could be wrong.
I am going on vacation in a few days and am looking for a rom to use while on vacation. I need working camera and video recording, and also the best rom for listening to music and wathcing movies etc, as we will be in the car a long time.

I have tried every single rom out there and CM 7.2 is the best.
Flashing AndroBreadCrumbs now, its cm7.2 based with some tweaks.

Lastest CM7 Stable, is better for Camera at 720P because it does 40MB bit rates and also, it has better media, tested it myself.
Cm 7.2 stable or neutrino would be the best options I think. Either one is great for movies and music. Personally I prefer cm7.2, runs smooth and haven't had any problems with it.

I find nottachtrix to be the best. I like the blur software. If you don't, I would agree with neutrino.

Neutrino is based on Cm7 RC3 when there is the Cm7.2 which has better battery life.
Neutrino's battery drains fast while not in use and Nottachtrix's battery isn't good either.
That's what i found therefore cm7.2 had the best battery life and preformance and i have tried all of the roms which are out there.
thank you and sorry for my bad English
I am using neutrino since 6 months now. I think battery back up is excellent. With l light use, I'm able to go on for 3 days. Blur based b barely managed to complete 2 days if at all.
Haven't tried CM 7.2 though..
