Evo View 4G Sprint Data Fees? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

For those of you who subscribe to the 4G data plan on Sprint:
A) Is there a way to get a data plan without a contract?
B) How much are the govt fees/taxes/surcharges etc on a $19.99 plan? I can see the plans but not all the fees/taxes/etc until after signing up.

In response to question B: Count on an additional ~$5 month (but almost $3 of that for me is "San Francisco City 911 Tax," so YMMV). "Sprint Surcharges" are $1.90: I assume that doesn't vary by geographic location?

Sprint surcharges should be same no matter the area. Government fees will vary. I believe the max is 15.3% .
As for the first question, theres at least one thread here already about that, if you seek it out, you'll find that sprint offers an official no contract rate that is pretty expensive. Some people have reported success getting someone to add it to their acct without a contract on the regular plan rates. Just keep in mind that it isn't officially an option so don't get frustrated if the care rep can't do it. Just hang up and start over. I can def confirm that we can't do it without a contract in the store.

The carrier that implemented an "actual bytes used" plan would have a hit on their hands, especially if it were reasonably priced. Imagine only paying for the data you actually use, and some months paying nothing at all, because you were on WiFi the whole time. That's a plan I would consider. And by its nature it would be transferable, so you wouldn't be locked into any particular piece of hardware for 2 years.

You can sign up for day use, week use or month use without any contract. That way if you are traveling you can utilize it. I feel one can tether to his/her phone and avoid this but it might be useful to some.

I tried this out for a month and it works well, and can even utilize 4G where available.

Yes, but you may not be able to do so with a representative. I was told by Sprint rep, that because I did not purchase my View from Sprint, I was not eligible for off-contract "pay as you go" data plan. So I just activated myself over the air. When I opened, SprintZone for the first time it gave me the option of choosing Monthly or contract. I had now problems activating for 1 month even though I did not purchase my View from Sprint. I went with the over-priced $49.99 option to test it out. I read somewhere that the Mobile Hot Spot feature is not available on the lowest tier $19.99 plan. Think I will test it next month.

If you are asking about the Monthly (non-contract) plans, all fees and taxes are included (at least with my FL billing address). Advertised as $49.99 and that was the total.

Sprint Limiting Data Plans

I seems like Sprint will now limit both 3G and 4G data plans with no grandfathering. I am wondering if this implies a change of contract? Has anyone contacted Sprint to cancel their service with no ETF?
The limiting is only for mobile broadband plans (mobile hotspot), not phone plans.

Sprint, "If you have a mobile broadband device such as a tablet, netbook, notebook, USB card, connection card or Mobile Hotspot device, effective beginning with your next bill following notification, your on-network monthly data allowance will no longer include unlimited 4G."
source ... http://support.sprint.com/support/a...25-20110927-142416/?ECID=vanity:servicechange
Exactly, mobile hotspot was in parenthesis as an example not limiting to.
Well don't that put a dent in my shiny new paper weight. Glad I cancelled Netflix.........
Bet they won't lower my monthly rate, though
I just called to see about this and whether I could cancel; the rep I spoke with said all signs point to my being grandfathered into unlimited data. My guess is they are just gonna use this to cut the cord with data hogs and grandfather in people like me who don't use all that much data anyways.
I use between 2-3 GB, but if I ever streamed a bunch extra, could bust through that so I definitely want the unlimited option.
Yeah, good luck on that grandfather thing. I bet they will rebate you for all the data bytes of advertising they mix in with web pages you look at too.... you know how fair and honest those mobile carriers are.

Not too worried; tbh I'd almost rather they not grandfather me because I'm sure that would mean I could cancel with no ETF.
this might be a stupid question but if I cancel my contract does that mean I would lose my service all together?

OK. On try number 1 I spoke with just a regular Sprint rep. She stated that the plan change did not constitute a material change. If this change is not material I don't know what is. I will try the next level.
Just spoke to retentions and account services and they let me out without a etf for a second time. It does work you just have to be fair and firm and state that you signed up for so many gb's of 3g and unlimited 4g and by them doing this is changing the contract.
Released from Contrack
On my second try I spoke to someone in Account services, it took a manager to approve but they let me out of my contract and let me continue month to month with no ETF. The only exception is that I am not eligible for a discounted upgraded until the end of my original contract period - which seemed fair to me. Overall I am happy with the service that Sprint provided me. I was polite to all that I spoke to and explained that the reason I went with Sprint was the unlimited 4G data and that by changing the plan and not offering grandfathering constituted a material change in the contract. Act quickly if you want to do this as you only have 30 days from being notified in your bill. Good luck.
Class Action Lawsuit
I wonder if all the people who signed a new contract when the View came out got together and sued Sprint for breach of contract and whatever laws regarding contracts that they broke by invoking this change how it would effect them. I spent a big chunk of change for this device with a 2 year contract for the plan I am on. Had I of known they were going to make this change this soon after I bought the Tablet, I would NOT have bought it, in fact I would have bought one from AT&T as they had an unlimited data plan at the time that they grandfathered in when they placed limits on their plans. I love my tablet but without 3g and 4g service it really is a useless device for me as I use it primarily as a means to communicate with the outside world when I am on the road.

Naw they aren't in breach as long as they let you out of your contract.
Actually contracts work both ways, saying they let me out of the contract ignores the cost of the view or the fact you cannot use it with another carrier. Contracts work two ways and just letting me out benefits them not me. No one sues so they continue this behavior.

Sprint is Nickel and Diming us

Sprint is making some more changes starting early next year. Apparently Family plans are going to lose the extra Employee Discounts, off the second line. We all know Sprint cancelled the discounts off the additional lines (line 3 and up) some time ago.
If you have an Employer Discount, the way it works now, is that you get a Discount (20% for me) on lines 1 & 2, as they billed together as Primary and Secondary. So I get $25.98 off my plan every month with the discount. Effective February the included line TWO, will be split as a separately billed line at $19.99. Line ONE (the Primary) will be $110 as it's own line.
So you will only be getting the Employer Discount off Primary line ONE, which now costs $110. Lines TWO through whatever, will get no discount. My bill will go up an extra $4 basically. Not the end of the world, but just another cut they have implemented. I remember I used to get my Employee discount off all my lines. Just makes you wonder what's next?

While I don't want this but I can say it's gonna be no more unlimited data.
I can honestly see that change coming about, right before they officially roll out LTE. They may let it stay for a while under Grandfathered plans, but if you wanna upgrade...bam there goes unlimited.
Meh...its not like there aren't other options. I wonder if you could use this sudden change of contract as a way out of your contract? I mean after all, it's no longer the family plan you signed up for if they change it, right?
Yes you will be able to. Any change that you can claim adversely affects you financially and they legally can not enforce the ETF as a way out. This includes any change in Billing, whether it be 10 cents more in taxes, or partial Pennies. Any and all increases can be used to get out of your contract without ETF. I have heard of People given a hard time with this from multiple carriers, but in that case it is just talking to the right person.
For anyone given a hard time use this "You have an option here, either allow me to cancel my contract without penalty, or give me your full name, and employee identification number. Transfer me to a supervisor so I can get his/her name and ID. You will be named in my complaint to my state district attorney for breach of fiduciary duty and breach of contractual law. Afterwards if necessary I will retain a lawyer if necessary."
This tells them that they have broken two laws, and are aiding in the broken law if they don't escalate the matter to someone authorized to make decisions on contract releases. If they broke the law and it isn't taken care of you will be sending the matter to your state attorney general who will initiate a class action lawsuit, where the person will be named. State attorney generals really will act on this. On matters that affect many many of their constituents that can reelect them, they love taking and fighting the case. I'd almost guarantee after this threat that they will let you out ETF free. I have used this a dozen times successfully on contracts with carriers and gyms, etc when they broke the law. Works every time. Not a matter of if, just a matter of time
I'm about done with sprint personally. As far as post paid carriers go they are the cheapest. But compare the quality of my service compared to all the prepaid people at work, I'm paying twice what they are paying for the same quality/data speed.. All I have to show for it is a better phone. BTW i played with a galaxy nexus at the mall today, I ran a speed test 16mbs'sec download and 4mbs'sec unload!!!!!

I am trying so hard to hold out until at least the end of 2012 to see if things will improve with sprint as far as better 3g performance and a decent lte foot print but I am really starting to have some serious doubts. It really looks like I may end up having to switch to at&t pretty soon.

Same here. I'll move my family to Verizon or T-MO while I move to prepaid AT&T goodness. That unlocked international Galaxy SII is starting to look better and better...
Afterall, it's literally the best phone out minus the Galaxy Nexus.
In metro detroit the data speeds are so bad that I can't even stream pandora without a 30 second re-buffering between songs. One day i tried to download roam control to force roaming on verizon and it was too slow to even start the download.
Speedtest.net app shows my speed at about 0.05 mbit the vast majority of the time with .3 mbit the max i've really seen and that is at 6:30am when the network is clear. And all this with an extra 10 dollar charge for the privelage.
Unlimted data is a catch 22 for me .. with sprint and using my phone constantly I can never even hit 2gb in a month because its so slow. With verizon i would hit 2gb in a couple days. This employee discount deal may be my excuse to get off of sprint and onto a real provider.
Between my contract and being on my parents contract before that I have probably been with sprint for about 15 years.. the funny thing is I cant ever remember being happy with their service.

Because pre paid carriers get unlimited talk text data for about 50 a month. Since sprint is so terrible specially in the data department...its almost worth doing. You can get a pre paid carrier that runs on the Verizon network, so it's a definite option to consider.

[Q] EVO View OFF-Contract Month-to-Month plans...

Greetings fellow FLYER/VIEW peeps!
Just a quick few questions for those in the know here... I have a contract free EVO View and would like to be able to go to month to month perhaps every other month either on the 1gb or 3gb plan.
I went to two Sprint stores (one corp and one affiliate store)... the corp store told me that I had to sign a 2 year contract while the affiliate store said that I didn't have to.
Does anyone know about this?
I also would like to know if in fact Sprint does allow you to go without a contract, will they charge an activation fee? I would hate to pay an activation fee if I were to activate and deactivate a few times a year.
Thanks!
AFAIK you must sign a contract only way to do off contract is flash it to boost mobile

Not quite. If you want one of the reasonable monthly plans with Sprint listed on the website and in the store, you have to sign a contract. Some people have managed to convince Sprint to give them those prices without a contract, but the overwhelming majority of folks haven't had any luck with that.
If you go through Sprint Zone on the tablet, you will be given off-contract options. But they're much more expensive and give you next to nothing for the price:
- $14.99 per day (150MB limit on network; 50MB limit off network)
- $29.99 per week (500MB limit on network; 100MB limit off network)
- $49.99 per month (1.5GB limit on network; 150MB limit off network)
If you go with one of those, your service will automatically cut off after the time period elapses or after you use your allotted amount of data (whichever comes first).
So unless you want to sign a contract with Sprint (or are able to convince them to give the on contract prices off contract), flashing to Boost really is the best way to go. The off contract options are ridiculous in my opinion, but at least they're there in case of an emergency or something.

I'll have to visit Cricket's site but do you happen to know the month-to-month pricing plans?
Also, that's crazy, so, Sprint wants a 2-year or a 1-year? Didn't verizon offer a much more friendly non-contract option? I remember when I visited Worst Buy for the launch of the OG Samsung Tab and Verizon offered the monthly off-contract plan.
I have heard of customers getting the contract rate without a contract, but I personally think the best option is to add a line and buy an iPhone 4s. Then you switch the view to that line and sell the iPhone. You'll probably pocket 400 profit on the 4s that will pay for 18 months or so of the 1gb plan.

Sprint changing price for shared plans

Not sure if you guys are happy/unhappy with your Sprint service, but they're hiking up the price for shared lines/business accounts. By them doing this, it voids your contract. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Not sure how much data you use, sounds like a lot, but Verizon is currently doing, instead of 2GB of data for $30, their doing 4GB for $30. I am about to port my numbers to Verizon.
Using Amazon Wireless I can get 3 Galaxy Nexus' and 2 Thunderbolts for a total of $299.99 out the door. And the plan is the exact same that I have with Sprint, 700 shared min., unlimited text, $30 each line for 4GB of data for $279.99/month, just about what I was paying for Sprint's. Of course Verizon isn't unlimited, but I'll gladly take that over their ****ty network in my area.

as for the op, unless theyre making a second change this shouldnt be a way to get out of your contract. the price remains the same, but instead of $130/$0 for the first two lines it is now $110/$20. for those with nvp discounts that will result in a small loss, but keep in mind nvp is not part of your contract and those rates are subject to change anyway. as always people will complain enough and some will get out of contract, but sprint has no responsibility to let you out.

You're correct about it not being much different, but I've spoken with a retention rep. and they said this change does void my contract. They changed the pricing of the original plan I have and also changed the pricing on Line 2 which was free previously. Reguardless if my account stays the same pricing wise, they can't change the pricing of a plan and/or line without it voiding contract. You just have to notify them within 30 days of said change to be able to opt out of ETF fees.

Nope, they are yours to keep since you are no longer under the contract for the phones. Since they waive the ETFs on your lines, they are yours to use or sell...
I sold my EVO 3D in a heartbeat since prices are quickly falling...lol
Who did you go with?

I just got off the phone with sprint. Basically there is no price increase for the plan. The family plan is decreasing $20 therefore compensating for the $20 for the second line. The only increase is if you have a discount and it will no longer apply to the 2nd phone. I did confirm with the rep that this does void the contract and we would be able to get out without paying the ETF's. I really don't have much problems with Sprint except the decrease in 3G speeds with the evo 3d. Going to look at prices at Verizon and might witch to the Galaxy Nexus.

Be nice since they are human too, and I guarantee you that they will be nice back with smooth sailing.
Oh and to answer the OP and other's questions...
My info: http://slickdeals.net/f/3839688-SPRINT-Changing-T-C-again-Feb-2012-Get-out-of-Contract-ETF-free
They've been wanting to do it since last month, and it's this month that they are making the changes. If they tell you that you will not be affected, just hang up and try again because that is 100% false, those who are getting discounts on the first line WILL be affected.

Just curious, if I choose to cancel, how would I go about porting my number to a different carrier? If they cancel my lines, you are no longer able to port the numbers.

If you do end up switching, the Galaxy Nexus is $99.99 from Amazon Wireless instead of $299.99 through a Verizon Store/Online.

You just call Sprint to make sure that your lines have the EFT's off them and are ready to port. I just did this and once the numbers have been ported, your Sprint contract is cancelled from that point.
When would be the last day to do this? I don't want to get locked into a new contract for 2 years when quad core phones are around the corner...

T-Mobile Veterans Help!

Ok people I've been on sprint since the OG EVO and I'm tired. It seems like the only way to go is GSM and I refuse to support crap GayT&T. On sprint, I have the HTC one (bought launch day), unlimited unthrottled data etc all at the cost of about $85-$89. With the new uncarrier and JUMP T-Mobile plans.... How much will this work out for me.
I will of course get the HTC one again, s-off it etc. I know it'll cost money down, but how will my bill be if I want UNLIMITED UNTHROTTLED DATA AMD THE JUMP PLAN? Could some of you smarter guys elaborate on this best you can please? Very much appreciated

Device (due upfront):
Down payment=$99.99 (sometimes less)
Tax on the full price of the phone=about $47.00
TOTAL=about $146.99
Services (due monthly):
Unlimited talk+text=$50.00
Unlimited data=$20.00
Monthly EIP (handset payment)=$20.00
JUMP=$10.00
TOTAL=$100.00+taxes & fees
*note
The unlimited data plan does NOT include wireless tethering so if that's a service you want/use, T-Mobile does charge extra for it.
**note 2
For questions it's best to post in the Q&A section of this forum, or indeed the best place to go for answers to questions such as these is your local T-Mobile store or to call T-Mobile at 1-800-T-MOBILE . Their associates are friendly and more than knowledge enough to help you with all these types of questions.
With root... Won't I be able to tether all I want or do they track that down?

That's true. I forgot about that. However, that'll be burned through in a weekend.

So I'll basically be in a worse situation? With Sprint... Network is shifty but where I am mostly... I get 4g. Unlimited whatever for $85-$89. With T... I'll be paying $100

Only if you do the JUMP program. If you want to wait two years to upgrade your device (just like you do on Sprint), it would be the same price per month. If Sprint's network is anything like it is here in Las Vegas out where you live, then T-Mobile is at minimum 3x faster. Also at any time you can pay the remaining balance of your EIP and your payment per month would go down to further $20.
Examples:
No JUMP w/ EIP=$90p/m
No EIP w/ JUMP=$80p/m
No EIP+No JUMP=$70p/m
etc...
Also keep in mind that if you pay off your existing EIP you can start a new one, plus then you get to keep the old phone. JUMP is essentially nothing more than leasing a phone, similar to how one leases a car. You're basically paying an exaggerated rental charge for your current device because with the JUMP program you need to turn in your old device upon getting a new one. In reality the true benefit of JUMP is the included premium handset insurance.

You don't need jump and when your phone is paid off your price is 70.00 unlike sprint you will end up paying the same price regardless. I was with sprint for 10 years and their service sucked so bad.
